By shape and design
There are round, square and multi-faceted gazebos. Closed and open versions are built according to type. The former provide comfortable communication with guests, without prying eyes.
Open gazebos provide a better view of the natural landscape. Such designs can be equipped with various decorative elements, which makes them works of art.
By material
The main advantages of wooden structures in the country are the following properties:
- strength;
- long service life;
- environmental Safety.
Since the assembly of such buildings is simple, craftsmen create structures of any shape and size.
However, natural wood has a number of disadvantages, including low resistance to fire, water and insects.
These disadvantages can be corrected by additional treatment of the boards with special compounds.
Suitable materials include: oak, cedar, beech, etc. The main types of materials include:
A little theory: what types of gazebos are there?
The first thing that comes to everyone’s mind when choosing the type of structure is what it will be: closed or open. Each of them has a number of advantages. However, there are other criteria related not only to the type, but also based on the material used in construction.
Open ones are more suitable for summer, when you want to sit in the fresh air. If you have a summer house for winter living, then a closed gazebo will be best. It goes without saying that the presence of gender in it is simply necessary. As for open or summer, you can do it in different ways.
With or without floor
The absence of a floor does not mean that you will walk on the ground, although there are such options.
If you are making a gazebo without a floor, then it will need to be placed on a platform prepared in advance. It could be concrete, paving slabs, paving stones, even just wooden flooring.
As for gazebos with a floor, they are placed on a foundation, like a house. As a foundation, you can use pillars made of brick, you can fill them with concrete, or you can use concrete blocks. A wooden or metal frame is installed on such a foundation. If you are laying brick, you will need to make a strip foundation
The next thing that distinguishes gazebos is the material used.
Materials
Fundamental brick construction involves the use of brick. Other types are lighter both in design and manufacturing method. They can be made from wooden beams, which is often the traditional material for gazebos. A modern material that many people prefer to use instead of wood is profiled steel and polymer pipes or PVC.
When using wood, it must be impregnated with antifungal agents. Metal, painted to avoid corrosion. As for plastic, it doesn’t need any of this. Therefore, when choosing a material, you need to take all this into account.
Having built the frame, it needs to be sheathed. For cladding, you can use wood - boards or slats, or polycarbonate, corrugated sheets, as well as transparent polyethylene films.
Gazebos can be divided into frame and frameless. Frame ones differ in that first a frame is erected from any material mentioned above, and then they are sheathed.
Frameless gazebos
A frameless gazebo is difficult to build. A strip foundation is made for it, on which walls of brick or stone are erected. If the brick is decorative, then it is not sheathed with anything. Openings are most often sealed with plastic windows.
In fact, it is capital; it also serves as a winter option, especially if you put a stove inside.
This gazebo is good if your dacha is used in winter. Otherwise, construction makes no sense. It goes without saying that the decoration inside is done in the same way as in the house.
Roof
An important point is the roof. The type of roof depends entirely on the shape of the frame. The most common shape is rectangular. Options for the roof: single-pitched, double-pitched and hipped. The simplest and easiest is the single-slope one. It can be completely horizontal if there is little snow, or at an angle.
A gable roof is made somewhat more complicated, since it follows the shape of the roof of the house, and therefore is installed on a rafter system. But it’s not that hard to do either.
The hip roof is somewhat more complicated. You will need to secure the pyramid shape. Here you already need to think about how to connect all the rafters at the very top.
If you have a polygonal gazebo, then you make a hip roof. This is a more complex version of a hip roof.
If you are just starting out in construction, then it is better to practice on simple options, like single or gable roofs, and then try to do something complex. However, if you involve a specialist, then this is a different conversation.
A gazebo made of modern materials - plastic, metal or polycarbonate - is quite simple to build, and the roof can generally be made round. Polycarbonate is very suitable for this.
Here, in principle, are the main types of gazebos. Which one to choose and what to make it from is up to you to decide, based on your capabilities and skills.
We'll talk about how to build it with your own hands later.
Profiled timber
It is in demand for various outbuildings due to its increased strength. Also, after construction it does not deform. The amount of material shrinkage is very small.

Do-it-yourself gazebo roof made of boards
What will our roof be made of? Of course from metal tiles. It can be made from corrugated sheets or from bitumen tiles, but we wanted it from red metal tiles. It is respectable in its own way and will attract glances from all passersby. Attaching metal tiles to the roof of a gazebo is simply simple. We will not make any underlays from waterproofing, etc., we will simply screw it to the sheathing and that’s it. Let's get started!
STEP 1: calculation . Before purchasing materials for the roof of a simple gazebo made of boards, you need to correctly calculate the amount of roofing material. To do this we need to calculate the roof area. To do this, first, you need to calculate the area of the gazebo itself. Then we multiply this number by 2.5 - this will be the roof area. Based on this data, we purchase all the necessary roofing material on the market or in a hardware store.
STEP 2: selection of material . On the roof of a country wooden gazebo, many different beautiful materials will look great. We have selected the most popular ones for you:
- Metal tiles.
- Profiled sheet.
- Flexible tiles.
- Slate.
- Ondulin.
- Polycarbonate.
- Natural tiles.
You can also make a roof from straw or reeds. If you don’t have any of this, and the roof needs to be done urgently, then regular film will do for a while. But this is not a solution at all, so you need to plan your finances in advance so that you have enough for everything.
STEP 3: fastening the roofing material . All of the above roofing materials are attached to the sheathing using self-tapping screws. But, they are slightly different in shape and length. The metal tiles are attached to the roof of the summer house gazebo made from boards using special self-tapping screws with a hex head. There are colored screws (to match the color of the metal tile), and there are also regular galvanized ones. All of them have two washers - one rubber (for sealing), and the other metal. The metal tiles are fastened using a screwdriver. You will also need to buy a special corner for the ridge of the gazebo, which will not prevent rain from getting into the gap between the two roof slopes.
If you don’t know how to build a gazebo from boards so that it turns out beautiful, then we strongly recommend using 150-edged boards and red metal tiles. These components combine very well and the end result is excellent. The roof of the gazebo is also an important factor, because a good gazebo can be seen from afar. And you can see it from behind the beautiful roof.
Block house
The block house is used mainly for finishing. The assembled frame is sheathed with such boards. The semicircular shape gives the building the appearance of a classic log house.
Gazebos made from this material have good thermal insulation, which makes them suitable for autumn weather.
Preparatory work
If a professional builder takes on the job, then you can choose any type of wooden gazebo. But if you are new to this area, we recommend choosing and building a basic structure that includes a gable roof.
What is included in the building:
Approximate drawing of a square gazebo
- square base, sides are two meters;
- supports for support;
- middle harness, which is made at a height of seventy centimeters from the floor level;
- gable roof type.
If you decide to make a gazebo with opaque cladding up to the trim level, then it is recommended to install stationary jibs. Their length is only fifteen centimeters, but they will significantly strengthen the finished building. There should be an entrance on one side of a square or rectangular gazebo. It is designed at a distance of no more than sixty centimeters from the corner posts. The opening width should be about 81 cm.
Now let's talk a little about the roof. The rafters on such a gazebo should be two meters long. If you plan to make a protruding roof, then you need to know that the dimensions of the future structure will be two and a half square meters on each side.
These indicators will be enough for a good rest with your family. It is worth knowing that a gazebo made of wood with your own hands can be built step by step using a variety of species. The choice of a specific tree will depend on preferences and financial capabilities.
Deciding on the type of wood
The main emphasis is on the raw materials and the chosen method of constructing the gazebo. Which type of tree is better to give preference to:
- Pine. Pine material is highly resistant to rotting and mechanical stress. The disadvantages of the material include the ease of damage to wood by various fungi.
- Spruce. It has the same qualities as pine, but is more resistant to fungus.
- Larch. Unlike the breeds presented above, this one is stronger. The structure made from it will be less susceptible to moisture. The only disadvantages include more complex processing and ease of splitting.
If you are building a gazebo with your own hands from wood, then it is recommended to choose the material from these three tree species.
Now let’s select the external type of elements for construction:
- If rounded logs are chosen for construction, then they are suitable for the construction of chopped structures. This material is not processed, but that is why it has a beautiful and natural look. If you are new to the construction industry and have chosen a log gazebo for construction, then the logs will be suitable for your work. The process of assembling a gazebo from this material is easy. But unfortunately the material has drawbacks. Disadvantages include shrinkage of the material, the appearance of cracks and the appearance of fungus or mold.
- Timber with a beautiful textured look. If this method of constructing a gazebo is chosen, then 10x10 cm timber is used for the work. By the way, they are often made from the above tree species. Timber is considered one of the most convenient elements to work with. It has advantages. The material is not subject to rotting and the time required to work with it is reduced. (Block house)
- The board is ideal for making gazebos. This material includes a block house, which is convex on one side. This indicator makes it possible to imitate a solid log. Even experts use such boards. But the material itself can be recommended to those who have decided to build for the first time and there is no way to get help.
- OSB board. It can be used for lining the gazebo, as well as for the floor. It is worth taking slabs with a thickness of at least 9 mm. They will definitely need to be treated with an antiseptic or paint.
Having chosen the material, we suggest you learn how to build a gazebo with your own hands from wood step by step, but first you need to assemble the necessary tools.
What to prepare besides materials
Before you begin the main work process and building a gazebo with your own hands from wood using step-by-step instructions, you need to take care of selecting the necessary tools. You must have:
- circular saw;
- planer powered by electricity;
- parquet;
- jigsaw;
- screwdriver;
- drill and drill bits of suitable diameter;
- hammer and chisel;
- level;
- meter;
- ladder;
- self-tapping screws;
- bolts with nuts;
- corners for corner joints;
- construction stapler.

Such railings or window openings look great. These decorative elements can be purchased from carpenters.
Regardless of the type of material, it is necessary to treat it with fire-resistant and antifungal compounds. This will ensure the durability of the structure. For this summer house, they are coated with an antiseptic, after which they are primed and painted.

Real diagrams and drawings
Metal and wood are rightfully considered the most popular materials. Drawings will be required - a detailed diagram is drawn up in advance.
Wooden canopy: the simplest option
The simplest way to build a gazebo is to put four pillars and a canopy over them. To prevent contact with concrete, which is destructive, meter-long sections of metal pipe of the required cross-section are dug into the corners. Leave at least 20 centimeters above the surface. Subsequently, wooden pillars will need to be installed in these supports.
The next step is to attach the mounting blocks to the posts. The design will be summer, which means it will be very light. 80 cm fencing can protect from strong winds and cold rain.
The roof is constructed from square bars with a diameter of 5 by 5 centimeters. To assemble the frame, the harness is installed around the perimeter, and the rafter legs are attached to it. Next, the sheathing of the gazebo is filled. Any roofing material can be used. It is even possible to cover a wooden garden gazebo with bitumen shingles. The flooring turns out to be very rigid, so there is no need for a frame.

The design is simple and installation is quick. Do you plan to use it not only in summer, but also in winter? In this case, it is advisable to make the foundation columnar. Logs made of timber with a diameter of 5 by 10 cm are installed on it, after which the floor is laid.
Drawings and various construction schemes suggest that the structure must be treated with a protective agent, varnished or painted. We will return to this issue later.
Construction of an arbor: the most clear guide
And here are the step-by-step instructions, following which the owner of the site will be able to build from scratch not only a reliable, but also a very beautiful structure. Choose a place for the future gazebo and thoroughly clean it of various debris. Unnecessary trees are cut down and bushes are removed. The subsequent scope of work is as follows:
- Draw up a project, prepare drawings. Don’t forget to determine the capacity of the structure – how many people can sit inside without crowding each other? Schemes are taken ready-made, drawn from scratch or adapted to your own needs. A detailed plan always takes into account the dimensions of the gazebos, methods of fastening, and components. It is carried out in several sections in order to provide for absolutely all the details long before starting work and to calculate the required amount of materials.
- Mark the area where the gazebo will be located. Wooden pegs are driven into the corners, and a cord is pulled between them. You can check the diagonal.
- Dig a shallow pit to fill the foundation. Use a level to position the formwork correctly. The best option is an edged board with a thickness of at least 2 cm. Since our gazebo is wooden, there is no need for a solid foundation. A monolithic slab 15-20 cm thick will be quite sufficient.
- Fill the foundation with concrete. The base will be level if you use a broad rule. Installation of additional beacons may be required if the foundation is of impressive size.
- Lay ceramic tiles on a concrete base. It is advisable that the tiles are not afraid of frost, because you will be using the gazebo all year round.
- It is better to do without corner posts. Do you know why? The structure will last much longer when the timber is installed on the foundation. Stock up on a bracket in the shape of the letter “P” (diameter inside = 10 cm). Secure it at the corners with anchors or dowels. The bracket is also placed on the long sides of the gazebo for reliability.
- Install the supports and secure them with self-tapping screws. The best option would be screws with a diameter of up to 0.4-0.5 cm and a length of at least 3 cm. When planning a do-it-yourself wooden gazebo with a pitched roof, the front supports are about half a meter higher than the pillars on the back side.
- Install longitudinal bars. They will be needed to secure the side elements. Cross or vertical spacers can be used as additional reinforcement. The beam with jointing is also attached to the front part of the structure. Do you want the gazebo to have its own ceiling? No problem - it is attached precisely to these elements.
- Make cuts. Depth – 3 cm, length 12 cm, made in the upper part of the racks. To install the rafters, take M8x120 bolts. A 3x12 cm board will be just right.
- The frame under the roof must be strengthened. For these purposes, make transverse elements. They are attached to the rafters and racks, after which they are reinforced with bars.
- Now let's take care of the lattice. The lathing board is placed on the rafters. Three boards for each sheet will be quite enough if the roof is planned from ondulin or slate. The sheathing for ceramic tiles is filled in such a way that the tiles rest on the frame in 2 places. For bitumen shingles, the boards are placed solid. OSB boards or plywood will come in handy.
- A wind board will definitely not be superfluous. Thanks to it, the roof will take on an attractive and finished look.
The wooden gazebo for your summer house is almost complete. All you have to do is paint it and varnish it so that neither rain nor snow can spoil its presentable appearance.
The second option for building a wooden gazebo
We bring to your attention the second method of arranging wooden gazebos. Its drawings are a little more complicated, but the structure looks much more impressive. Its perimeter is curved, the tent roof is hexagonal, and a quadrangular version is also possible. For construction you will need to stock up on the following materials:
- Wood blocks 10 by 10 cm.
- Slats 2.5 by 3 cm.
- Not a thick edged board (2.5 cm), which will be used for roof sheathing. The floor is lined with the same board, but thicker - 4 cm.
- Roofing material and fasteners.
- As a tool, take a circular and bow saw, a screwdriver, an electric planer, a tape measure, and fastening materials. We also offer photos where you can see the appearance of this design. The phased construction method will be described below.
We propose to build a wooden gazebo with a barbecue, but this must be done at a decent distance from a residential building. This way, smoke will not get into the windows, and if one of the guests gets tired of the noise, he will be able to enjoy a quiet rest indoors. From an aesthetic point of view, this is also good: the gazebo will not stand under the window like an “idol.”
To achieve the desired effect, it is advisable to place the structure near flower beds or garden trees. Can you imagine what a beautiful view it will be to see bright flowers instead of someone else’s fence?
Rules for choosing a place for a gazebo
The main parameters for such a construction are the following:
- Geology of a small area without groundwater rivers.
- Smooth surface. This will prevent flooding in the spring.
- Significant distance from outbuildings or toilets.
- What tools and materials are needed
To build a gazebo with your own hands you will need certain tools:
- construction hair dryer;
- brushes for painting wood;
- putty knife;
- plane, jigsaw and grinder;
- hammer, hardware, set of wrenches of different sizes;
- Boer;
- hydraulic level, tape measure;
- sanding machine or grain paper;
- construction cord for marking the site.
Among the building materials you will need: crushed stone, cement mixture and sand, lumber for covering the floor covering and partitions, formwork board; roofing material, paint and varnish compositions for wood.
Sketches of the gazebo
It is clear that you want a reliable, durable structure. Metal is unrivaled, the solution on the surface is a gazebo made of pipes. However, there is nothing to do here without welding skills. Therefore, the wooden option is more accessible for implementation.
Looking at the drawings, one may doubt the simplicity of the design. However, it is immediately worth noting that the option of a gazebo for the description was not chosen in vain - it guarantees results even for beginners who know nothing about carpentry. This is a great opportunity to “rehabilitate” for those who have heard at least once in their lives that “they didn’t hit a nail in the wall.” To make it more convincing, let’s look at why everything is so simple:
First, a small amount of tools is required:
- Household tools: shovels, buckets - can be found in every yard.
- Hand tools: a hammer, an ax - any owner can find them.
- Power tools you need are a drill and a belt sander.
Secondly, you need minimal construction skills:
- Dig.
- To nag.
- Pound.
The most difficult part will probably be measuring the dimensions correctly and tightening the screws. Thanks to the simplicity of the design, anyone can do this kind of construction of a gazebo with their own hands. Next, let's look at the drawings themselves.
From the sketch you can see that the gazebo is assembled in rows. For beginners, this is the main advantage: there are no racks or support pillars. After all, installing them in a vertical position, assembling parts into a common horizontal plane, and ensuring structural strength is the main difficulty for beginners. In addition, the situation is aggravated by the size of the gazebo - the larger they are, the harder it is to make the gazebo, because everything needs to be kept “under control”. And in this project, all constructive parts can be lifted even by one person.
Let's see the view from above. It shows the overall dimensions - the length of the lumber. It can be seen that this is a gazebo 4 by 4 meters, in the drawing it is a little larger, but this is not important - any dimensions can be changed proportionally. It also becomes clear that the gazebo is planned to be square, without a doubt - this is a plus, since marking the foundation like this is much easier to do.
Next comes information about the order of the walls. Please note that the bottom of the gazebo is supposed to be “translucent”. This will ensure structural strength while saving material - it’s easy to calculate how many rows in height can be raised due to “lightening”. The result is a visually light, beautiful gazebo, well ventilated, which is important for “non-permanent” buildings.
The following image draws attention to the boards framing the openings. Of course, these are the most important elements that increase structural strength. Although, the horizontal parts serve a more decorative function - it is advisable to make them and use them as railings. And vertical racks are really amplifiers; their presence is mandatory. They set and control the verticality of the openings - in common parlance this is called a “jamb”.
Moreover, it is not at all forbidden, and even advisable, to rethink this knot and perform it in the best traditions of carpentry - if the thickness of the walls allows it - cut the key inside and decorate the outside with a trim. But if the lumber is of relatively small thickness, and here 45mm is used. – make a “hugging” stand with overlays on three sides of the wall – outside, slope, inside. Then our wooden gazebo, or rather its walls, will gain strength, as they say, “with a margin.”
The following sketch of the gazebo is about the structural elements of the walls. The specified lumber is 45x130 mm profiled timber, which is perfect for the manufacture of small buildings - country houses. Even a more structurally complex hexagonal gazebo can easily be assembled from it. It is available in various cross-sections, with different numbers of tongues. Factory execution presupposes a guarantee of quality - such products require a complex, multi-stage technical process: drying, culling, processing on machines. However, the budget is appropriate.
In the future, we will consider how and with what, if necessary, you can replace it: of course, much more effort will be required during construction and the wood will dry naturally - all this is clear, but the gazebo will still be “thrown on the street,” so we will lose little in quality. Those who want to save money and tinker should be warned right away - the material should already be in stock, naturally dried. Therefore, there is no need to entertain vain hopes - the raw materials will not work from the sawmill and will definitely lead to “falling over”.
It is noteworthy that all the elements are structurally the same, they differ mainly only in length, they have notches made to join the corners - let’s call them bowls.
Separately, the structural elements of the roof are drawn in great detail and clearly: rafters and octagon - according to their number, for connection in the center. As you can see, the number of rafters is 8, but based on the number of walls, it will be a hipped gazebo.
The position of the rafters is also indicated by the top view. The roof itself is a pyramid, based on corner and intermediate rafters. Now their position is even more clear.
And finally, the development of one roof slope, looking at it, the feeling gradually returns that this is a drawing of a simple gazebo. It is easy and simple to calculate the amount of roofing material for the entire roof.
To complete the preparation, it can be noted that drawings and drawings greatly facilitate the preparation and calculation of materials for the construction of a gazebo. Moreover, they can easily be adjusted to fit the existing lumber - recalculated towards reduction or increase. The main thing is not to be too lazy to do this on paper, so that later you don’t have to look for a “way out of the situation,” because we are building a gazebo “for sure.”
Creating a construction project
The drawing can be varied. Some craftsmen create original gazebos that are equipped with barbecue areas. Initially, a simple sketch is created in 2 projections: profile, frontal.
You should also mark on the drawing the dimensions of the sides of the house and the height of the beam elements. It is advisable to designate the type of roof, as well as areas for window and door openings, as well as areas for placing stationary furniture.
In the drawing, first draw the structure of the foundation and the roof. It is also necessary to mark on the project various technical modules, which include the rafter system, steps, and racks.
A special stage in the design development is the marking of electrical wiring for lighting, heating, etc. Also on the sketch you need a diagram of the water supply if it will be supplied to the gazebo.
Sketches of gazebos with drawings and dimensions
All dimensions indicated on the drawings can be increased or decreased to obtain a structure of the required dimensions. With a significant increase in size, the size of the wooden elements (section) should also be increased for the required strength. If everything is done correctly and in the right sequence, then you can count on a positive result.
Classic wooden gazebo
The project is almost the same, but some dimensions have been changed: the top point of the roof has been raised, making it seem lighter. The gazebo is quadrangular with a hip roof.
An ordinary square gazebo for a garden or cottage made of wood.
The roof installation has problematic attachment points, indicated in the figure by circles. The picture below shows how to do this correctly.
Options for fastening problem units when arranging a hip roof.
Option for distributing space in height and option for attaching the sheathing to the roof.
Chinese style gazebo
All dimensions are indicated on the drawing, and the project includes marking for the foundation, installation of the rafter system, etc. The project is arranged in the form of a photo gallery.
Volumetric gazebo on the foundation
The construction of this gazebo involves pouring a strip foundation. The characteristics of the foundation depend on the nature of the soil, as well as the mass of the gazebo itself. For such a structure, a foundation up to 20 cm wide and no more than 50 cm deep is suitable. If the soils are heaving, then it is better to use a pile foundation.
Massive glazed gazebo
Swing gazebo with all sizes
A gazebo-swing is rather an exclusive option that requires great responsibility when arranging it. The frame must be strong, otherwise the structure will easily become loose and fall apart. The most important thing is to securely fasten the legs of the gazebo. They must be metal, as the entire fastening process is simplified; all you need to do is dig your feet into the ground and fill them with concrete.
Other mounting options are possible, but in any case it must be reliable. The deeper the legs are dug into the ground, the more reliable the structure will be. For greater reliability, the legs can be connected to each other below ground level and filled with concrete.
You can take this drawing as a basis and build a gazebo-swing with your own hands.

Design Guidelines
When creating modern summer houses with complex communications, it is advisable to turn to specialists for design.
It is also possible to use ready-made drawings from the Internet, which describe in detail the type of material and design parameters.
It is recommended to purchase quantities of materials in reserve. Since there may be defective lumber and hardware.
Creating a preliminary design allows you to determine the need for material and determine the cost of building a gazebo. Thanks to this drawing, you get step-by-step instructions for building a house.
Covering a homemade wooden gazebo
At this stage of constructing a wooden gazebo, we will begin and finish sheathing the walls and roof of the gazebo. This labor-intensive process will be difficult to do alone. In order to secure the facing boards to the gazebo, at least 2 people are needed. You can fasten the boards end to end, but we did it a little differently. We will make one (blank) wall butt-to-joint, two walls with windows will be made in a checkerboard pattern, and the wall with the door will generally be made with vertical cladding in a checkerboard pattern. In this article we will tell you and show you instructions for building a gazebo from 150 mm boards. Well, let's go!
STEP 1: wall cladding (two walls with windows) . We begin to attach the boards to the walls. We attach the first board from below. Before fixing it with self-tapping screws, you need to level it so that all further boards also turn out level. You need to attach it to at least 6 points. Next, in order for us to get a checkerboard facing, we need to retreat 100 mm from the first board, and also, using a building level, we attach the second board. On top of these two planks you need to fasten the third so that it lies on the boards with an overlap of 25 mm. This board is attached both to the substrate and to the main posts (with longer self-tapping screws).
STEP 2: wall cladding (blank wall) . Our country wooden gazebo will have one blank wall, which we will not scoff at and will make it ordinary. We also attach the bottom board to the level and dance upwards. Fastening boards end to end is much faster and easier. You can occasionally check the level, but if your first plank is made level, then all the other boards will also be level (only if the boards themselves are level).
STEP 3: wall cladding (wall with door) . The developers of this project decided to make a simple gazebo from boards not quite simple. On this wall they also decided to make cladding in a checkerboard pattern, but only vertically. To do this, we will need to make horizontal reinforcements that will run from the corner of the gazebo to the doorway. And so, here we begin to do everything in the same way as on the horizontal cladding, only we fasten the first board on the corner of the gazebo from the boards with our own hands.
STEP 4: facing the pediment . For those who don’t know, the pediment is the triangular part of the gazebo roof, bounded by a gable roof. According to tradition, we make the pediment in a vertical checkerboard style. It will be a little more difficult to do here because of the angle of the roof. But, armed with a saw and a marker, you can do it. We adjust the planks to the roof slope and fasten them using our favorite wood screws.
IMPORTANT. Before sheathing a gazebo from boards, make sure that all materials are dry and completely ready for use. If the boards were recently made, then there is a huge risk that when they dry, they will tear at the places where they are fastened with self-tapping screws. The boards, roughly speaking, will dry out. It is also possible that gaps form between the boards, which are also not desirable in the gazebo.
If you didn’t know before how to make a gazebo from boards quickly and easily, then here’s a clear example. If you want to save money, it is better to do wall cladding joint to joint. If you do it in a checkerboard pattern, then it takes one and a half times more materials, and it’s also quite a lot of time. We did just that because we wanted to, and nothing more. We continue to work on our gazebo further.
Foundation installation
Before starting construction work, it is necessary to obtain appropriate permission that the building will be created in accordance with the rules of SNiP.
The construction of the foundation differs depending on the type. Its variety is determined by the type of soil and the dimensions of the gazebo.
When building a 2-story or more structure on soil with high humidity, a concrete site should be constructed. When the soils are swampy or mobile, pile foundation technology is used.
It is also possible to install a columnar base when constructing a compact closed building. And for log gazebos, a strip type of foundation is used.
Materials and tools
No construction process can be started without purchasing materials. Having decided on the appearance of the gazebo, you need to purchase the appropriate lumber, taking into account the construction of the frame and its cladding.
Depending on the model, the list of what is needed may differ, but wooden beams for constructing the frame, boards, slats or lining for cladding, metal tiles, roofing felt and a ridge for the roof remain unchanged.
In addition to the above, you may need a primer, paint or drying oil and a standard set of tools for working with wood.
As for lumber, when choosing wood, in addition to financial possibilities, you need to take into account its type and grade. Let's look briefly at several varieties:
- Larch has its advantages: high strength, durability and moisture resistance; its disadvantages are high thermal conductivity and the possibility of cracks.
- Cedar has positive qualities: high resistance to rot and damage by pests, but negative qualities are high price and a specific smell.
- Pine has advantages: long service life, environmental friendliness, affordability, and disadvantages: the likelihood of resin stains and poor resistance to scratches and damage.
- Spruce - the advantages of wood include high strength, lack of warping, affordability, flexibility for processing and gluing, but it is not without its disadvantages - high humidity levels, deformation during the drying process and the presence of many branches.
There are other types of wood, but as a rule they are more expensive and less in demand in summer cottage construction. But if desired, oak boards can also be used to build a gazebo.
Parameters for creating a columnar foundation
In order to place the pillars, small depressions of up to 0.5 m are created with a drill to fit their dimensions, and they are laid out with brick blocks.
The level must be taken into account during the construction process, since the top row must be level with the soil. Before laying the brick pillars, it is necessary to create a base of crushed stone and sand. The distance between columnar elements is up to 2 m.
The total number of pillars may vary, but the minimum required is 9-10 such blocks. The base one is installed in the middle, 4 in the corners, 4 more between these side ones.
It is also advisable to waterproof the foundation, which will prevent subsidence of the structure and damage to the flooring. For this, a double layer of roofing felt is used.
Construction of a foundation for a gazebo
After drawing up a design drawing, a suitable location for its construction is selected. This area should be level, fairly open, and distant from sheds and country toilets. It is advisable that the place for the gazebo be located on a hill, then the foundation will be protected from flooding and dampness. After removing vegetation and large stones, markings are made for the foundation.

Columnar foundation for gazebo
This is the simplest and most cost-effective foundation option. To make it you will need:
- shovel or garden auger;
- level;
- roulette;
- support pillars;
- cement mortar;
- fittings;
- roofing felt Columnar foundation for a gazebo, diagram
Support pillars should be located at the corners of the gazebo and under the load-bearing walls every 2 m. If metal pipes or cuttings of logs are chosen as supports, holes for them are prepared using a hand drill. The diameter of the holes is 10 cm larger than the diameter of the pillar, and its depth is approximately 70 cm. For pillars made of brick or cinder block, holes are dug with a shovel, giving them a square shape. The depth of such pits should not be less than 50 cm.
Columnar foundation made of bricks
Sand is poured onto the bottom, and then crushed stone, the thickness of each layer is about 10 cm. Metal pipes are cut into equal parts so that after installation in the pits they rise 15-20 cm above the surface. The metal is treated with an anti-corrosion compound and dried. Lower into the holes and align vertically. A piece of reinforcement is inserted inside each pipe, the length of which is 10 cm longer than the length of the column. Now concrete is poured into the pipes, and the space between the walls of the pit is filled with soil and stones and compacted.
The process of installing a columnar foundation
Instead of pipes, you can take dry dense logs. They are treated with an antiseptic, and then coated with bitumen mastic and dried. After this, the supports are lowered into the prepared holes, compacted or filled with concrete mortar.
Construction of a columnar foundation
If blocks or bricks are used as pillars, cover the bottom of the pit with a cushion of sand and crushed stone, drive in a piece of reinforcement 70-80 cm long in the center and fill the pit with concrete mortar to the top. When the concrete has cured, its surface is covered with roofing felt, and a brick or cinder block is laid on top. The reinforcement should be in the center of the column and protrude 10 cm above its surface.
Reinforcement of the foundation from asbestos-cement pipes
Slab foundation
This type of foundation is perfect for a small round or square gazebo. The boundaries of the site are marked, after which soil is selected to a depth of 40-50 cm. The bottom of the pit is leveled and compacted, covered with sand to a height of 10-15 cm, spilled with water and compacted again. Then crushed stone is poured in a layer of 15 cm and a reinforcing mesh of rods connected with wire is laid.
Slab foundation
Construction of a solid foundation Slab foundation
Stepping back 10 cm from the edge, vertical pieces of reinforcement are attached at the corners so that they protrude 15 cm above the foundation. Low plywood formwork is installed along the perimeter, reinforced with spacers, and filled with concrete mortar.
Shallow strip foundation
Shallow strip foundation
This option is best suited for a spacious closed gazebo. The boundaries of the foundation are marked on the site, marking them with driven pegs with a rope stretched between them. The width of the tape should be slightly larger than the thickness of the walls, usually 25-30 cm. The depth of the trenches is 50-70 cm, depending on the density of the soil. The bottom of the trench is covered with sand, then gravel or crushed stone, and reinforced with a grid of metal rods. The formwork is made low, enough so that the foundation rises 10 cm above the ground.
Installation of the base - bottom trim
Foundation floors are created from small square beams (0.1 by 0.1 m). In total, their number is 5, including one in the center and 4 on the sides.
In these lumber, special connectors are created for fastening to poles using built-in reinforcement, the level of which is slightly higher than the support modules.
The beams can be combined using the “half-tree” technology, which increases the reliability of the structure.
From metal and wood: how to make a gazebo with your own hands?
If you decide to build a metal structure, then it is better to use a profile pipe, the wall thickness of which should be at least 2 mm. This is because round pipes are more difficult to weld.
If you intend to use a roof made of lightweight material: flexible tiles, corrugated sheets or slate, then a profile with a cross-section of 50x50 cm is suitable for the racks. And in the case of tiles, it is recommended to use a pipe with a cross-section of 75x75 cm. As jumpers, you can use a metal profile, the cross-section of which is not exceeds 50X50 cm.
The selected area must be cleared of debris and grass so that it does not rot under the floor. Then dig a hole and cover it with a layer of sand. Pipes can be installed directly into the ground.
Using a drill, make shallow holes, about 90 cm. Pipes are inserted into them and filled with crushed stone or construction waste, after which everything is carefully compacted. The stand must be filled with cement mortar.
Vertical posts must be checked using a plumb line.
If you need to raise the structure a little, it is recommended to use foundation blocks. Then place them over the entire area, as shown in the image below.
At the next stage, the lower piping is done; for this, pipes with a cross-section of 50X50 mm are laid on concrete blocks. The coals are welded by a machine. A profile with a cross section of 40x20 mm is suitable for the lintels; boards will be laid on them.
The profile must be coated with a primer, especially at the joints. The height of the racks should be slightly more than two meters. To strengthen them, the jibs should be welded.
The middle harness should be at a height of about one meter. For this, a pipe with a cross section of 40x20 mm is used. To add rigidity, it is recommended to fix the vertical posts, as shown in the image below
If bitumen shingles are used as a roof, then the roof rafters should be made of wooden blocks with a cross-section of 75X40 mm. The sheathing can be made from wooden lining. At the top, the rafters are fastened with self-tapping screws.
Secure the board in the middle and nail a beam to it, on which the rafter system will rest.
The image below shows how to secure wooden jibs made of timber with a cross-section of 75X40 mm.
After this, you need to lay out the bitumen shingles.
A board with a section of 70X40 mm is used for the floor, and a board with a section of 70X20 mm is used for the walls.
In this way, you can build a structure using two types of materials in a few days. To install the structure, you need to have experience working with a welding machine, and at other stages, difficulties should not arise.
Frame and top trim
To obtain a strong frame, a beam should be used, the length of which is 2.6 m, with a transverse diameter of 0.1 by 0.1 m. The surface of the lumber is created perfectly flat, for which an electric planer is used.
Next, cuts are created on the beams for mounting the slats to the roof. The thickness of these recesses is determined by the parameters of the rafter system.
In the corners there are reinforcement elements rising from the floor, onto which vertical supports are attached. For this purpose, holes with a cross section of 1 cm are created on the end sides.
It is necessary to ensure the ideal installation of the pillars, which will ensure good strength of the gazebo, as well as the coincidence of all butt elements. This parameter is checked using a level.
You can also simplify the assembly work by securing the placement of the pillars using rough struts. Then measure the right angles, and then install the finishing beam.
Cladding walls and floors with boards. For this, lining, or a more modern block house, is used.
Creation of drains prevents flooding of the building by precipitation.
Step-by-step instructions for building from wood with photos
Before you start building a gazebo, you need to prepare the site. The turf is removed, leveled, the fertile layer must be completely removed.
Next, you will need to choose which foundation to make.
Choosing the type of foundation and bottom trim
Brick or concrete pillars can be used as a foundation, on which the lower frame is then placed. You can use the support pillars themselves for the foundation. In any case, holes are dug with a depth of 0.5-0.7 m. At the bottom of the holes we place a 10 cm cushion of sand and crushed stone, after which we install pillars. They are pre-treated with an antiseptic, and the part that will be in the pit is wrapped in roofing material.
Floor
Simple gazebos for summer cottages can be equipped with a floor, or they can be without this floor. The second option involves assembling the building on a concrete site or area made of paving stones.
The construction of such versions is carried out quickly, since the installation of a foundation is not required.
When constructing an option with a floor covering, it is laid after strengthening the foundation to ensure the strength of the structure.
To assemble the floor, timber installed around the perimeter of the building is used. The board is attached to reinforcement elements, then logs are placed at a distance of 0.35 m. After this, planking is carried out.
Do-it-yourself wooden gazebo 3m by 4m, drawings and dimensions
The gazebo shown above was 3x3 square. Another option is if you are making a rectangular one, the dimensions of which are 3x4.
The drawing will look like this.
Another drawing of the same gazebo, only with a hipped roof.
Or this drawing of a gable gazebo.
To build such a gazebo, it is best to use a foundation with 9 or 12 supports. Concrete blocks work well as supports. You can also dig holes about 30 cm deep. Level the bottom of the holes, compact them and lay a brick pillar in the hole in five rows. The last row should be above the ground. Instead of bricks, you can take the same concrete blocks. They are covered with roofing felt on top.
The lower trim is installed on these supports. Vertical supports are selected 2 m long, timber size 100x100. The supports are leveled with a plumb line and reinforced with jibs.
A rectangular gazebo implies three roof options: one, two and hipped. The simplest one to implement is a pitched roof. If you decide to make a pitched roof, then at the stage of installing the front racks, you need to make them slightly higher than the rear ones.
Rafters are attached to the beam of the top frame using metal corners, screws or nails.
The distance between the rafters is 80 cm. The lower edge of the rafters should protrude beyond the frame of the gazebo by at least 30-40 centimeters.
After this, the sheathing is attached to the rafters. A 50x50 beam is used for it. The distance between the sheathing beams depends on the roofing material. When covering with metal tiles, this distance is less than when covering with slate. Before covering with roofing material, a waterproofing material, such as roofing felt, is placed on the sheathing.
Having finished with the roof, we move on to the floor. A floor board is attached to the logs that are located between the beams of the lower trim. Self-tapping screws serve as fasteners.
And finally the finishing. Traditionally, clapboard covering half of the gazebo is considered. The top part can be glazed, left open, or covered with a patterned strip.
Roof
To build a roof as in the photo of a wooden gazebo, first create a frame of timber, combined perpendicularly using the “half-wood” technology. Good strength is created by the use of a connecting bar.
In addition to the central support columnar element, side ones are attached, which are located between the corner support blocks. After securing the roof to the supports, the railings and posts are tied.
It is important to note that this structure is assembled on the ground. After securing 2 pairs of rafters, the frame is transferred to the roof. After installing all the planks and aligning them with the central column, the metal tiles are installed.
The rationality of installing a wooden gazebo
Nothing complicated: let's talk about the types of gazebos and the materials from which they are built. First of all, buildings of this type are divided into open (summer) and closed (glazed). This does not mean at all that there are only these two types: there are also combinations with removable glazing, and there are also awnings made of transparent film, which, if necessary, are stretched over the frame of the gazebo. Another option is that some of the walls are closed, some are open. Choose the one that is closer to you.
With or without floor
Gazebos can also be divided into those with and without floors. Gazebos without a floor are placed on a prepared platform made of paving slabs, poured with concrete, lined with paving stones, etc. Although no one is stopping you from building right on the grass. Only the frame must be treated accordingly: direct contact with the soil requires enhanced protection measures. If we are talking about a wooden gazebo, it is impregnated from rot and fungal infections; if it is made of metal, it is treated with an anti-rust compound.
This is a wooden frame gazebo without a floor
Gazebos with a floor require a foundation. Most often they make columns. They can be made of brick or rubble, poured with concrete, or foundation blocks placed. If you have large, flat-topped boulders that can support the structure, use them. But all this - if the building is light - is on a frame made of wood or metal. Brick gazebos require a strip foundation, albeit shallow (20-30 cm below the fertile layer).
This is also a gazebo made of wood, but with a wooden floor
If you want to tile the floor in the summerhouse gazebo, you will have to fill the insulated slab with concrete, and then lay frost-resistant types of tiles on it. Moreover, the insulated slab must be at least 50 cm wider in all directions than the building on it. And these 50 cm are made at a slight slope so that moisture drains. This is actually a blind area that will prevent the soil under the gazebo from freezing. This way the tile will not be twisted and cracked.
Materials
The frame of garden or country gazebos is made of three materials:
- wooden bursa or round timber of small diameter;
- steel pipe (profiled is more convenient);
- polymer pipes (PVC).
The only material that does not require protection is polymers. They do not rot or are affected by fungi. Some species tolerate freezing and thawing without much harm. So they can stay over the winter. The only thing is that for a gazebo for a summer house made of PVC pipes to be durable, they need a solid diameter and a thick wall. And even in this case, there is no need to rely on the frame: you will have to install furniture that will not put pressure on the plastic. Well, the grill will need to be placed to the side (if provided).
PVC plastic pipes can serve not only as a frame, but also as wicker walls
In order for a wooden garden gazebo to remain attractive for a long time, all wood that will be used in construction must first be coated with a protective impregnation in one or two layers. The cheapest impregnations today are SENEZH and Usadba, and the reviews about them and their protective properties are very good. These manufacturers also have tinting compounds.
The metal frame for the gazebo is processed twice. The first time the pipe is primed before construction begins, then the welding areas are carefully primed. Moreover, if there is rust, it is either cleaned off or treated with a rust converter and only then primed. Why such difficulties? So that the appearance remains solid for a long time. After the primer has dried, everything is covered with metal paint for external use.
Gazebo made of plastic. Maybe not environmentally friendly, but no problems with painting, fungi or rust
The covering of gazebos for the garden can be almost anything. Wood is most often used. These are planed boards, blockhouses, linings, and small-diameter round timber. If there are used pallets, they are disassembled, the board is sanded and the lower part of the frame is covered with it. It turns out very economical. And due to the fact that the wood has long dried out, after treatment with protective compounds it lasts a long time.
Gazebos for cottages and gardens are sheathed with the following materials:
- polycarbonate;
- profiled sheet (corrugated sheet);
- tempered glass;
- cloth;
- transparent PVC films;
- bamboo.

Frameless gazebos
This was about frame gazebos. Now about frameless ones. This is when walls made of bricks and building blocks (most often aerated concrete) are erected on a strip foundation or on a monolithic insulated slab to a height of about 2 meters. One or two walls can be as high as the roof. The rest are made of columns, on which the rafter system rests. Building such a gazebo is not cheap.
An example of a large glazed gazebo trimmed with wild stone
Brickwork, if it is done beautifully, can be left unfinished. If you built a gazebo from foam blocks, its finishing is no different from finishing the same house. The surfaces are sheathed with metal mesh for plaster, then plastered. You can put any finishing on the leveled walls: even decorative plaster, even stone. Garden gazebos made of stone, brick and foam blocks are most often glazed: they will be warm in winter too.
Roof
The choice of roof structure depends entirely on the shape of the gazebo. If it is rectangular, there is a wide choice: one or two slopes, four slopes. Rectangular gazebos under a pitched roof are the easiest to build. Gable is not much, but more difficult.
Summer rectangular gazebo made of round timber under a gable roof
If the shape of the gazebo is more complex: pentagonal, hexagonal, octagonal, then you will have to make a hip roof. It’s even more complicated: you’ll have to figure out how to connect all the rafters in the middle.
The dome roof is the most complex
By using flexible roofing and metal or PVC as a frame, you can make the roof completely round. The pipes are bent, and material with seals for bolts or screws is attached to them. Such garden gazebos are very easy to look at; you can build them (if you know how to use a welding machine and a pipe bender) in a few hours.
This is probably the simplest gazebo: two bent pipes that are attached to the backs of garden benches
That's all. Others bet very rarely. By the way, if you are interested in gazebos under the same roof as the house, they are called verandas.
This is the whole theory in a nutshell. There may be some other special cases: there are many materials, as well as possibilities for their combination. We will publish the most interesting original gazebos made from non-standard materials at the end of the article. And now - practice.
