Stool cover. Sew it yourself

How to sew a cover for a stool with your own hands?

Hello, friends.

Sometimes it is enough to update a couple of details in the decor of the room to make the interior sparkle with new colors. An affordable way to do such an update is to change or sew new covers for the stool.

In one of the previous publications, I announced the topic. One of the readers was interested. Elena reminded me about the new thing for the stool in the comments to the article “Case for glasses.”

Here's what she writes:

Hello, can you tell me how to sew a cover for a kitchen stool, such that it can be removed and washed? The stool is ordinary, with a square seat. Please help, I have an idea, but I don’t know how to implement it, I only learned to sew at school. I don’t know how to properly cut and insert foam rubber into it, and even so that it can be removed. Elena.

I'm answering the question.

If you need to sew a cover for a stool with a square seat, there are several options.

Here are some of them:

  1. Soft removable cover with ties.
  2. A pouf cover that covers the legs.
  3. Case with short edges and foam inside.

Soft, removable drawstring cover

It is easy to cut: it is cut out of thick fabric according to the size of the seat. Equipped with ties. You can put padding poly inside, between the layers of the main fabric.

Let me give you examples:

Case - pouf

You can sew a cover that completely covers the legs. In its appearance and design it resembles an ottoman. For example:

In my case, the case was made from artificial leather with a color and texture that imitates gold. It looks unusual.

We have a stool near the mirror and the little girls who come to visit really like it. They immediately shout: “A throne for the princess!” and sit down. The inside is an ordinary stool, but you can’t tell from the outside.

There is another option, the cutting and sewing of which we will consider.

Cover for a stool with a voluminous seat

This is a cover with short edges and foam inside for softness and comfort. It’s not difficult to sew it, it’s enough to know some nuances.

Cut out the cover for the stool

You need to measure the sides of the stool seat.

Cut out a rectangle with sides equal to the measurements taken.

To cut out a strip that is stitched to the base of the rectangle, you need to know:

  • length of the stool seat around the perimeter;
  • height=thickness of the foam rubber that needs to be inserted as a pad in the seat.

Look at the picture. Surely, it will become clearer how to cut the case.

Cutting example:

Suppose the length measurement of one of the sides of the stool, respectively, of all the others, is 40.0 cm, the thickness of the foam rubber is 5 cm.

To cut the base, take a rectangle with sides of 40.0 cm + seam allowance: 1.0 – 1.5 cm.

The strip for stitching to the base of the seat will have the following dimensions:

Length: 40.0 x 4 (number of sides of the seat) + seam allowance: 1.0 – 1.5 cm = 161 cm.

Width: 5.0 (foam thickness) + allowance for hem and drawstring: 4-5 cm = 9-10 cm.

Stages of sewing a cover:

  1. We sew the strip into a ring, iron the seam allowance, you can topstitch it for strength.
  2. We bend the bottom edge of the strip for stitching to the base, lay a line close to the edge. Don't forget to leave a hole for threading the elastic.
  3. Place the base and the raw cut strip face to face.
  4. We grind the resulting ring to the base.
  5. We put on an elastic band.
  6. We insert foam rubber cut to the size of the base of the stool seat.
  7. We put the cover on the stool.

If you don’t want to decorate the bottom edge of the strip with frills, then the side cover will look like this:

And this is what the finished stool cover will look like: bottom view.

This cover is easy to care for; you can remove and wash it at any time by removing the foam insert.

You can decorate a household item in various ways and techniques:

  • applique;
  • patchwork;
  • edging;
  • frills, etc..

For 4 covers for a stool measuring 33x33 cm we will need:

- main fabric (it is advisable to take water- and stain-resistant fabric for table linen) 70 cm, width 150 cm;

— padding polyester cut 70 x 70 cm;

- lining fabric (I used regular cotton fabric that I had lying around, you can take any other unnecessary fabric);
