What materials are rugs made from?

- Additionally, you need to prepare thick cardboard for templates, a large needle, scissors, a compass, a dinner fork (to make small pom-poms on it), a pen or pencil, and a crochet hook if necessary.
A set of tools and materials is not strictly necessary. When making circles on cardboard, the compass can be replaced with a glass of the required diameter, and instead of threads, strips of knitted fabric from old clothes can be used.
Advice! To make the carpet fluffy and voluminous, pom-poms are made with a diameter of 7-10 cm (outer size). You can use the same fragments or blanks of different sizes.
How to make pom poms

The classic way - pompom on rings
Required tools and materials:
- sheet of cardboard,
- compass,
- needle with a large eye,
- yarn,
- scissors.
First you need to decide on the size of the pompom. Using a compass, draw two circles of different radii with the same center on the cardboard. Cut two blank rings. Connect the rings. Wind the threads evenly, passing them through the hole.
When the middle is filled, cut the yarn along the edge of the circle with scissors. You should hold the middle so that the future pompom does not fall apart. Leave a thread between the rings to attach to the base (25–30 cm long), tie a knot tightly. Remove cardboards. Trim the pompom with scissors for aesthetics.
Method for making a pompom on a “rectangle”
What you will need:
- cardboard,
- scissors,
- threads
Cut a rectangle out of cardboard or fold it several times to the desired size. Wind the threads tightly to the desired thickness. Pull out the rectangular cardboard. Using a thread folded in half, tie the turns in the middle. Leave the tip for attaching to the canvas. Fluff the pompom.
If cardboard is not at hand, then the threads can be wound around the fingers folded together. You can make pompoms of different sizes. The more turns, the more magnificent the pompom.
Small pompoms on a fork

Square
The simple shape of a square can be effectively used in the design of a floor accessory made of soft balls. Making a square rug is a classic handicraft technique. To make such a product, first you need to prepare the pompoms themselves in the amount of 80-100 pieces.
To create medium-sized pompoms, follow these steps:
- To make a carpet, there is no need to cut out templates - needlewomen wrap the yarn around their fingers. To get large fragments of the product, use four fingers, a small pompom - two.
- Threads of yarn are wound on the fingers in 15-20 turns, and a separate free thread is additionally pulled between the fingers to tighten the skein into a strong knot.
- Distribute the yarn evenly in the resulting bow and cut the loops. After fluffing the pompom, trim the excess thread edges with sharp scissors.
- The threads that fasten the pompoms are not cut, but are used to attach elements to a base made of dense fabric or construction mesh.
After preparation, the elements need to be sewn to the base - the mesh. First, sew on the first row of 9-10 identical balls and form the remaining rows on it. If you plan to make a large canvas, you will need significantly more blanks. It is necessary to take into account the diameter of the pompoms in order to schematically make a square out of them, as shown in the photo below.
The elements need to be tied more tightly so that the finished product has a rich look and the base is not visible under the pompoms. Additionally, it is recommended to sew a edging along the edge of the rug, and sew thick fabric on the wrong side to hide the threads. Fluffier yarns make fluffy carpet balls.
Round
The original version of the pom-pom carpet is round in shape. The accessory will fit perfectly in a child's room next to the bed, in the living room, in a relaxation area with friends, in the bedroom in front of a bedside table or dressing table. You can make an accessory from multi-colored balls or elements of different diameters, placing pom-poms in a circle or in a spiral.
The tutorial for creating a round rug is quite simple. First we make blanks - pompoms. They can be made according to the same scheme as described above. Next, take the mesh material and mark on it with a pencil a circle of the diameter you need - this will be the basis of the future rug. All that remains is to tie the finished pom-poms starting from the center, gradually filling the circle.
To simplify the process of making a soft rug, you can not tie or sew pompoms, but simply glue them to the base using hot glue and a gun.

The muzzle, ears and legs need to be knitted or crocheted from thick gray threads. The size of the parts must correspond to the planned product. At the end, the elements are attached to a beige rectangular body in the shape of a sheep.
Using the same principle, using ingenuity, you can make a variety of rugs, for example, resembling a bear cub, a heart or a flower meadow.
Beautiful rug on a knitted base
Very often in your grandmother’s chest or at the dacha you can see original round-shaped bedding made from yarn. You can give this little thing a second life, add some color and softness to it, using fluffy pompoms.

If you already have a knitted rug, use it as the base for your new rug. If you don’t have such a product in your home, don’t be disappointed, because it’s easy to make with your own hands. For this you only need threads and a hook. For a small rug you will need to make about 70 medium sized pom poms.
The stages of work are not complicated and are understandable even for a child, just follow my recommendations and look at the photo.
First, place the pompom in the middle of the knitted circle, take the hook and pull two threads between the loops to the wrong side, tie them well.
As you work, move in a circle and attach the remaining elements in the same way as the first ball.
After finishing the work, turn the rug over to the wrong side, it will have a rather unsightly appearance, but this should not upset you, everything can be fixed.
Using scissors, cut off all the threads from the wrong side.
Cut out a blank from the fabric chosen for the base. In size it should slightly cover the knitted base. Carefully sew it on, covering the unsightly underside and hiding all the edges of the rug.
