About solid wood facades
Most often, larch or coniferous wood is chosen for the manufacture of facades.
If you conduct research on the kitchens offered in retail chains, you will notice that they are usually made from:
Solid wood kitchen fronts are usually classic rectangular
Advice: if you are focusing on premium kitchen sets, pay attention to furniture that uses ebony and mahogany for facades, as well as cedar and other wood with a beautiful internal structure.
- Wooden facades for furniture should be made only from blanks whose humidity is in the range of 6-10%. They should not have cracks, knots, resin pockets, or “paths” left by pests.
- After processing on woodworking machines, wood must be impregnated with special compounds, thanks to which putrefactive processes cannot occur. At least 2 layers of varnish should also be applied to finished wooden facades for cabinets to emphasize their appearance, as well as protect the material from UV radiation, moisture and elevated temperatures, which happens quite often in kitchen conditions.
To make facades, in addition to natural wood, veneer is often used - thin sheets of wood that are glued to the base. It is usually used to decorate panels - the inner part.
In the photo - very often today you can see a kitchen facade made of MDF wood.
Constructions
Let us consider below two main groups - facade from:
One piece of wood |
|
Several parts (paneled) |
|
Wooden facades for the kitchen can be paneled (stacked) or made from a single piece of wood
Advice: if you want to save a lot, buy combined products that consist of natural wood frame and veneered MDF filling. This combination is often also called an "array".
Characteristics of natural wood facades
Below is a list of benefits:
- The appearance of the products is difficult to compare with options made from other materials. Many manufacturers try to use special films that are glued to MDF in order to at least somehow correspond to them, but, alas, this does not work.
- The naturalness of wood immediately creates the impression that not only the kitchen, but the entire home is environmentally friendly. Today, for protection and finishing, they try not to use toxic impregnations, so solid wood furniture is considered safe for use.
- To increase the service life of products, you should properly care for them. This is confirmed by furniture that is already 100 years old or more, but their appearance is quite decent.
- Natural wooden facades will always remain in fashion, as they are true classics. They are not affected by currents and trends in interior design, so they will suit any place and any time.
Kitchen facades made of wood must be protected from UV radiation
- Their cost cannot be low, otherwise they will offer you something completely different from what you expected. It can only be reduced by a facade made from solid wood with your own hands.
- Products require special approach and care using appropriate detergents.
- Sunlight can change their appearance over time, so you need to take care of UV protection.
- It is difficult to imagine products in a curved shape; they are usually strict and rectangular.
Self-production
Looking at solid wood facades in specialized magazines, you understand that their cost is very high, so you will not be able to purchase similar models. And no need, you can make them yourself in your workshop. Below are instructions that will help you step by step to get almost the same product, only for a much smaller amount.
Features of manufacturing milled facades
Milling of MDF in 2D or 3D modes is carried out on a full-format CNC (computer numerical control) milling machine equipped with an automatic cutting tool changer and a vacuum workpiece fixation system with a power of 11 kW. The power of the milling unit is 9 kW. Drive mechanisms are servo hybrids (Leadshine). These options minimize manual labor and allow processing of the plane and end of products without moving the workpiece, which ensures high accuracy and productivity.
The work table of the machine (Y-axis-3000mm, X-axis-2100mm, Z-300mm axis) allows you to mill MDF facades with a length of up to 2770mm and a width of up to 2040mm.
The main type of work performed is milling of facades, both from our collections and according to customer sketches. We also accept orders for milling of both MDF and other materials. We accept orders for the production of parts from laminated chipboard using NESTING technology - i.e. cutting, manufacturing of curved parts and drilling are carried out on a milling machine from a sheet of 2800x2070mm format, without moving the workpiece, which ensures maximum accuracy.
Please note that milled facades have restrictions on minimum dimensions, because... Not every pattern can be reduced indefinitely, and these restrictions are different for each milling pattern.

Recommendations for designing a product layout (template)
Milling of slabs is carried out according to the provided layout. If it is designed incorrectly, this can lead to distortions in the parameters in the finished product and misunderstandings. To avoid such situations, please read the layout guidelines:
- file format - EPS, AI, CDR, DXF, DWG for classical and multi-component milling; STL and STEP for 3D milling;
- raster objects are not allowed in the layout;
- layout scale - 1:1, distance must be indicated in millimeters;
- the distance between the contours of objects is at least 5 mm, between objects is at least 8 mm, the distance from the edge of the workpiece is 15 mm around the perimeter;
- The curvature radius of the 6 mm cutter must be observed - 3 mm (in some cases, a 1.5 mm cutter with a curvature radius of 0.75 mm is used).
You can find complete recommendations for designing a product layout on this page.
Note!
You can order the development of a product layout by our specialist. The cost of the service is from 1000 rubles, depending on the complexity.
Requirements for processed MDF and chipboard boards
The quality of the finished product primarily depends on the material used. We process our own blanks or use material provided by the client. Requirements for the processed material:
- dryness, otherwise the slab will crack and deform after a while after processing with a milling cutter;
- absence of visible and hidden defects;
- free margins - more than 10 mm from the image outline;
- flat surface, deviation of the sheet from the plane - no more than 0.2 mm.
Note!
If the workpiece is larger than the working fields of our machines (1530 x 3150 mm, 2080 x 3100 mm, 1600 x 2050 mm), there is no need to cut it. We ourselves will adjust the material to the required dimensions.

Colors
Important!
We are obliged to inform you about some of the nuances of working with the color catalogs “RAL”, “NCS”, Color System, WOODCOLOR and others.
Often, clients who order a color from these catalogs consider the selected color to be a standard, but this is not entirely true. The paints used to paint the colors in the catalogs are typographic paints and not original enamels for furniture production. Also, the color rendition of the paper medium and the paint itself is different.
The purpose of catalogs is to help the client visually choose a color.
Colors from catalogs can be made from base materials with varying degrees of gloss: from 5 to almost 100%.
When producing enamel colors from catalogs with different degrees of gloss, different pigment mixing recipes are used. The gloss of the enamel affects the color match to the catalogue.
Please note that:
- 1. Catalogs in printed (typographical) form are used for visual selection of the desired color.
- 2. The color standard is the real, live color of a specific enamel on a specific production and material.
- 3. When choosing a color, you need to focus on the degree of gloss of the finishing surface.

Decoration
If we talk about milled MDF facades, simply cutting out a pattern on the surface with a milling cutter is not enough.
It is important to present the product in a modern style, in Provence style, make it with patina, or present it in a neoclassical style.
To do this, use 3 methods of decoration.
- Painted facades. I think you know what it is. This is the process of applying special paints in several layers. Such structures are easy to maintain, well protected from temperature changes, and do not absorb moisture. But this is a rather expensive processing method;
- Film. These are the most common types of decoration for milled facades. The film used is PVC, which can have various decorative properties. Depending on the film, products can be glossy or matte;
- Veneered. They repeat the advantages of wooden milled facades for the kitchen, but are cheaper.
The top decorative layer not only completes the kitchen, but also gives the furniture additional strength, protection and durability.
The cutters set the required pattern, which is displayed on the finished body of the kitchen furniture.
Processing of wooden parts
The first thing you need to learn is to correctly set the milling depth.
To do this, you need to set the zero point. It is impossible to set it rigidly, because it changes every time the cutter is changed. The zero point is the position of the tool when the end of the cutter touches the material and is fixed with a special device called a clamp. It is necessary to pay attention to the fact that each router has a different position when fixed. To control the depth of immersion of the cutting tool into the body of the material, a stop pin with a coarse adjustment scale is used.
When milling with an end mill, the counterforce from the cutting force moves the router to the side. To prevent this from happening, you need to use a rip fence. The milling process is as follows. Place the cutter along the marking line and secure the position of the stop with a special screw. Set the milling depth and turn on the machine. If the rip fence is installed on the left side, you need to pull the router towards you, when on the right side - away from you.
In order to select a quarter on a beam, you need to set the cutting edge of the cutter at the very edge, fix it, set the depth of the quarter, turn on the router and pull it towards you (if the stop is on the left edge of the beam). Milling the surface of narrow bars has its own peculiarity. The problem is that it is very difficult to hold the router on the narrow side of the workpiece. If it wobbles during operation, the groove will be inaccurate.
To avoid this problem, the block must be clamped with a clamp, and a block of exactly the same size must be placed in parallel. Then the milling machine will acquire two points of support and will not wobble.
Working with a hand router can replace working with a planing machine. To do this, you will need several accessories for the milling mechanism. It looks like this: attach a milling mechanism to two equal-sized slats and use it as a planer, where a large-diameter milling cutter is installed instead of a shaft.
madstoker › Blog › Kitchen made of wood. Production of facades.
Having finished with the cabinets and cabinets, I began to work on the facades. To begin with, I purchased a Makita 2300 manual router and assembled a milling table for it. I bought a set of frame cutters (China), article number 9340. The set includes two cutters: profile and counter-profile.
To make it easier to adjust the cutter height, I ordered this altimeter from China.
As I already said, for the manufacture of facades I purchased oak risers, measuring 900x200x20 mm. I don’t have my own circular saw, so to get the right size, I took them to the store for cutting. I sawed it in half lengthwise.
For the panel I bought plywood veneered with oak on both sides. The groove is selected with a 6.3mm cutter. I found either 4mm or 8mm plywood on sale. I had to take a four. One sheet of 1.25 x 2.50 m was enough for all the facades. On three facades I planned to use a wooden lattice as a panel. I bought it ready-made from ash (you will see it in the final photos). Two more facades were planned with glass. Everything is clear here, I went and ordered from glaziers. Well, then everything is simple. I sawed off the required size on a trim saw, and used a counter-profile cutter to go along the ends of the boards:
