In fact, it is not so important how many meters this apartment is, 39 or 40, or maybe 33. The solutions used here will suit almost any small apartment.

Design studio Clifton Leung Design often works with exceptional apartments that have a non-standard layout or a very modest area. The apartment we are talking about today is no exception to the unimaginable range of layouts, unique in their awkwardness, with which Clifton Leung Design had to work. This is not surprising, since we are talking about China, where every square centimeter counts and there are quite strict rules for handling public property, which in essence is the majority of residential buildings.

The 39 square meter apartment, which Clifton Leung Design recently completed, is located in Whampoa Garden, Hong Kong and contains a lot of original, non-standard solutions.

The apartment has created a refined and, one might even say, philosophical atmosphere due to the soft warm creamy shade used to decorate the walls and floors. In the design, we tried to stick to white and beige colors, with only a few exceptions in the form of small accessories and pieces of furniture, which act as focal points against a light background.

The special atmosphere is also supported by a special diffused light lighting system. Typically, niches are used to create such lighting systems, but Clifton Leung Design combines niches with special light boxes - unique double-sided niches that allow you to create even softer lighting due to double-sided light diffusion.

The main goal of working on the new interior design of the apartment was to restore order and provide maximum free space. The minimalist interior design style copes “excellently” with both of these tasks.

The interior space of the apartment was divided into two zones, one of which is public and the other private. The first zone included a living room, kitchen and dining room, and the second zone included a bedroom, bathroom and a small study.

The maximum area of free space is ensured due to the free floor, that is, the designers used a trick by raising some of the furniture above the floor surface, and placed additional sources of soft light in the resulting niches.

Zone distribution

Zoning is the main technique of decorative designers. It allows you to visually divide the space into separate functional zones without affecting the overall style. Creating a design project for a one-room apartment of 38 sq.m. You definitely can’t do without zoning. Only with its help can an apartment with a large functional load be made comfortable.

It is important to understand that zoning is most often conditional in nature and is determined by furniture, color and other content, and does not imply dividing the room with partitions into many tiny nooks.

Regardless of the area, work begins with compiling a list of required zones:

  1. Living room.
  2. Bedroom.
  3. Children's room.
  4. Office or hobby corner.
  5. Recreation area or library.
  6. Dining room.
  7. Sports.
  8. Wardrobe.

This is only an approximate list, since it is not at all necessary that all zones be present in one space. Some people need an office, while others, on the contrary, need a children's corner or even a single place to relax.

Methods of zoning in an apartment of 38 square meters. m.

Options for zoning living space largely depend on the number of rooms in the apartment

One-room

When zoning an apartment, it is recommended to use partitions, arrangement of furniture, highlighting colors, it all depends on preferences and financial capabilities. In the bedroom combined with the living room, it is recommended to install matte partitions. Transparent or patterned structures can make any room brighter and more spacious. In this case, the sleeping place should be placed in a niche.

In a one-room apartment with an area of 38 square meters, you can organize a fairly spacious private area by separating the sleeping space with curtains

Another equally practical solution is a sliding glass partition, also complemented by blackout curtains.

Standard partitions can always be replaced with racks. If necessary, you can also combine the kitchen with the living room.

Two-room

The easiest way to convert a two-room apartment into a three-room apartment is to create a space for all generations. Partitions will help to divide the living room into two rooms; ideally, there will be one window in each room. A living-dining room can be obtained by combining the kitchen with the hallway, but you should be prepared to reduce the area of living rooms. Rounded walls will help place a dining table. A loggia can always be converted into a room for a child; insulation plays an important role.

The following materials are used for zoning:

  • plasterboard, fabric, glass partitions;
  • furniture, shelving;
  • colors, texture of finishing materials;
  • different levels (podiums, ceiling).

Lightweight partitions do an excellent job of zoning space and do not require any special expenses

All of the above methods can be used simultaneously or separately, the design of a one-room apartment is 38 sq. m. photo depends on the imagination of the home owner.

Space zoning

Almost all designers use zoning when creating an interior. It is relevant for studios and one-room apartments, when it is necessary to create several zones with different functionality in one room. Using this technique, remove the doors - they narrow the space and take away precious area. See the photo for confirmation of this.

Typically, zoning is conditional and is implemented using color design and furniture arrangement. There is no need for additional partitions, because the main task is to expand, not reduce, space. This approach to the design of a one-room or two-room studio of 38 sq. m. m will make a small room functional, with a convenient layout and maintaining style. The division into zones begins with a list of what functions the room should have:

  • hallway;
  • cabinet;
  • living room;
  • bedroom;
  • kitchen;
  • dining room.

When compiling the list, the wishes and needs of the apartment owner are taken into account. They differ from person to person, so the list of functional areas does not always look the same.

The main thing in planning an apartment is determining the number of zones and how much space each of them will occupy.

To make zoning effective, various methods are used: they break up the space using furniture, decoration, and color. Options can be mixed and matched to find a middle ground, as shown in the photo.

How to make every corner functional

Start your renovation by inspecting the room. Then, get inspired on the Internet, study completed design projects, and find the optimal solution. You have to choose whether to just do repairs or completely remodel your home.

Remodeling may vary. When a one-room apartment has an open layout, everything depends on your imagination, but if the room already has its own purpose, you have to think about it. Typically, in studios with this area, the living space takes up more space than the kitchen. By changing the purpose of the zones, you can organize a small comfortable seating area and a spacious dining room, living room or office. This will not be convenient if the family consists of more than two people.

Having a balcony in a one-room apartment will help solve the problem of lack of square meters. By connecting it to the kitchen, the space can be expanded. In this case, household appliances and work surfaces are placed on the balcony, and the living or dining area is separated by a bar counter or partition, examples are in the photo.

This type of apartment design requires investments that exceed the costs of simple renovations. This is due to the need to insulate the balcony and install warm floors, because heating is not provided on the balcony.

Combination of living room and bedroom in one room

To accommodate everything you need in a small apartment, you should combine zones with different functions. Usually they combine a living and sleeping area.

The storage system located in this place carries a lot of meaning, sets the mood in the room and holds a lot of things. This allows you to make the apartment more spacious.

Typically, partitions are not used to zone a bedroom. Open cabinets are best suited for this. There is no point in cluttering a small apartment with unnecessary walls. The advantage of this allocation of functional areas is that nothing interferes with the spread of sunlight throughout the room.

Often, when planning an interior, owners make the mistake of leaving corners free. By using them, you can save precious space. For this reason, designers often use corner sofas, tables, and cabinets. Several photos prove this.

Selection of furniture and textiles for decorating an apartment of 38 sq. m.

When designing a studio of 38 sq. m. photo it is recommended to use light colors. If necessary, such an interior can always be diluted with colorful accents. The interior will gain vibrancy and individuality due to bright curtains, curtains, paintings, and flowers. Arranging furniture around the perimeter is no longer relevant, especially if the goal is to save free space. A good option is to separate the kitchen and dining space with a bar counter. The best option is also considered to be the use of built-in technology. When separating the bedroom from the living room, you should use a wardrobe.

Cabinet furniture made in the form of an arch is perfect for storing things, inside of which you can place a TV, sofa or bed.

The choice of textiles depends on the interior; the shades must be combined. Oriental motifs are perfectly complemented by draperies. Japanese style involves the use of bamboo blinds. Maintaining order in the apartment plays an important role; things should always be in their place.
