How to make a gate with your own hands: we make sliding gates using a rail mechanism

You can make it yourself

Their design is the simplest of all known: sliding, lifting, single or double leaf. They let in and out the owners’ car, a cargo scooter “Ant” or a walk-behind tractor with a trailer. They can be equipped with a yellow signal light or an antenna for remote control of the “close-open” mechanism. With a gate for adults and children in one part of the plow or separately next to it.

For those who have not yet had similar ones, read our recommendations for creating entry barriers, look at photos of gate drawings, collect the necessary tools, purchase materials and start working on your own.

And if you decide to build a garage in the yard, then the experience gained from assembling a plow on the estate will also be suitable for installing the entrance to it.

You can also download a drawing of a garage door on the website. The design of these gates is simple and clear, installation is simple, easy to open/close, and reliable.

Swing gate design

No matter what materials appear, no matter how the fashion for decorating gates changes, the basic principle of their arrangement remains unchanged. Structural device:

  • pillars (racks). In fact, they are not gates, but they are supports for their fastening;
  • frame for swing gates. Wood or metal can be used in its manufacture. The latter is more popular because gives the frame greater rigidity;
  • finishing (cladding) material for cladding;
  • loops;
  • latches and locks.

So, we have decided what swing gates are and what features they differ from.

Device principle

The design of such fences has remained unchanged for centuries. Only the materials for plowing are changed. To the traditional options (made of simple metal or wood), elegant profiles and polycarbonate are added.

The advantages of plowing are:

  • ease of assembly and installation
  • minimum cost when assembling with your own hands
  • durability
  • ease of maintenance
  • Suitable for office areas, technical complexes, garage cooperatives
  • Variation in sash widths up to fifteen meters

Types of metal structures

Steel structures are most often made of single-leaf, double-leaf, with or without a gate.

Single leaf

Single leaf gates have only 1 leaf. They can be hinged, sliding or lift-and-turn. The simplest design is in which hinges and 1 sash are welded to 1 post. It can open both inward and outward.

However, with such installation there is a possibility that the sash will warp under its own weight during regular use. Sliding options are more reliable, in which the sash is supported, which allows it to better distribute its weight and reduces the risk of breakage.

Bivalve

If you need to build metal gates with your own hands, preference should be given to simple swing double-leaf options. Such designs have 2 doors that are installed on poles.

In this case, the gate leaves open in both directions. Most often, the opening is carried out towards the yard. Using 2 sashes allows you to reduce the load on posts and hinges. It is possible to install double-leaf structures using the sliding method.

Double doors with gate

If there is a need to arrange a gate, it can be done in leaf 1 of the leaves. The wicket area must be additionally reinforced with a profile. They arrange it in the hinge area. This will reduce the load when opening and closing the gate frequently.

Let's pay attention to installation

The gates are mounted on side posts made of pipes with a diameter of 10 cm, a welded pair of corners or ready-made profiles. They are concreted to a depth of at least a meter so that the frost does not “drive” the gates.

The height is enough to be two meters, the same width of each door. They swing open either immediately or each separately, into the yard or out. This needs to be thought through right away. They are hung on hinges that are well lubricated with a graphite mixture so that they do not creak.

When closed, if there is no opening mechanism, they are fixed in several ways. Either transversely with an inch pipe mounted on a pair of hooks for each plow, or with fasteners at the junction of the mortars, mounted in the concrete. The lower fastening will also be needed in the case of simply fixing each plow.

The cladding, painted corrugated sheeting or polycarbonate, is attached to the frames with bolts or self-tapping screws. The last hardware per square meter of fastening is needed eight to ten pieces.

You leave the last material in its translucency or paint it with a color of your choice. The corrugated sheeting, which continues in the form of a fence from the gate along the entire length of the front part of the estate, looks good.

The disadvantage of the goal format is its large turn. This is a particular drawback for winters, when a lot of snow must be cleared in order to open the gate.

Material

Depending on the fencing material, two groups of structures are distinguished:

  1. Wooden gate. Made from different breeds. They consist of a wooden frame, lathing, on top of which individual boards are packed. They can be stuffed horizontally and vertically.
  2. Sheet metal sheets. The most popular due to ease of assembly and low price. The frame is made of separate profiles or corners, on top of which metal sheets are welded.

A separate group includes canvases that are covered on the outside with metal or plastic siding.

Manufacturers often produce combined designs. Up to the middle, the gate consists of blank metal sheets; above there are forged rods or fittings. They are much more beautiful than solid sheet metal.

Overhead garage doors

There are two more types of gates - overhead and garage. The lifts themselves are mounted in a detached garage or built into a building. They are not suitable for open air, since they have a complex design for the street. When rising, it will create windage in the wind, which will lead to deformation of the frame.

A drawing of a lift gate for an integral garage shows that it can be opened in winter even if there is a snowdrift in front of the engine room.

The entrance leaf simply goes up along the lower slide, and the two upper wheels along the same guides lead the structure almost horizontally.

If the gate is made not of too thick metal, but of a profile, then you can raise and lower it manually. Provide a soft seal along the contour of the gate against wind, snow, and rain.

Painting rules

Since gates or doors made in this way will serve you for more than one season, it is important to take care of their durability. Painting is an important stage in the construction of gates, on which the service life and appearance of the structure depend. Incorrect painting can lead to metal corrosion, which will irreversibly damage the surface, so you should take the matter seriously. The sequence of work is as follows:

  1. Sanding and cleaning.
  2. Priming the door leaf.
  3. Coloring.

If the gates were made independently, they should definitely be coated with an anti-corrosion compound, and if you purchased a ready-made door leaf, they should be degreased and treated with a primer. It is advisable to purchase the paint from the same manufacturer as the primer mixture, since they are compatible with each other in quality and properties.

For forged gates, it is recommended to use alkyd-acrylic paints. Apply the paint with a hard, rounded brush. Typically, painting is done in two layers, after waiting until the previous one has completely dried. This should be done in dry, windless weather.

Gates with contrasting paint

Advice! Forged elements will not blend into the general background and will look more interesting if you choose a shade for them that contrasts with the main door leaf.
