Advantages and disadvantages of plastic fittings

Advantages and disadvantages of plastic fittings

Properly selected fittings can make furniture more practical and convenient to use. Traditionally, metal and wood are used for its production, but some elements are often made of plastic. This material is usually used when the part is not aesthetic, but exclusively functional.

What is it and how does it work?

Thrust bearings are fittings that are used to protect the floor or floor covering from damage if it is necessary to move heavy furniture without leaving marks on it. They are attached to the lower ends of the sides of cabinets and chests of drawers. It can also be used to “mask” defects on furniture elements. The main functions of thrust bearings are:

  • prevention of scratches and other damage to floor coverings made of various materials, including linoleum;
  • facilitating the movement and transportation of furniture on any surface;
  • maintaining the durability of products and preventing moisture from entering the lower ends of the furniture walls;
  • adjusting the slope of products during their assembly and installation.

Furniture support is the basis of everything

Long gone are the days when furniture supports were inexpressive and, if they “peeled out” from under the furniture, they seemed to apologize for their too simple and inconspicuous appearance. After all, previously cabinet and upholstered furniture were made according to the principle of a plinth structure, where a simple thrust bearing was nailed to the bottom - and that’s all. Nowadays, modern furniture, especially upholstered furniture, can no longer be imagined without one of the main decorations - decorative supports.

As we know, supports are furniture fastening devices. They ensure the interaction of furniture products with the elements of the room and must be convenient and reliable in operation. Today there are a huge number of different supports, which are divided by characteristics, structures, design, etc. Constantly changing fashion forces furniture manufacturers, manufacturers of facial accessories, and designers to come up with more and more new types of designs.

The simplest support that we will talk about is a regular thrust bearing. In most cases, it is made of plastic and comes in various types: “under the nail”, in the form of a button, with a leg, etc. It is still very often used in both cabinet and upholstered furniture of economy class. Despite its apparent simplicity, it has an important function - it prevents moisture from getting inside the boards from which the cabinet is made, since in the future the laminate that covers the chipboard may bubble and come off.

Wheel supports (furniture wheels) are necessary for the manufacture of armchairs for the home, coffee tables, extendable sofas, medical furniture, various gurneys, etc. These supports come with a stopper, without a stopper, are attached to furniture using a platform, a threaded screw, or have a U -shaped fastening. The ability to carry increased loads, soft, silent rolling - these are the main advantages of wheel supports. The load on each support is determined by its purpose. The simplest wheel support is “straightforward”, its name speaks for itself; such a product is used in furniture that does not require turning, for example sliding sofas. The next class of “wheeled” supports are supports for furniture that require rotation around its axis. They differ in load, appearance, and mounting methods.

The decoration of upholstered furniture, and not only upholstered furniture, is “decorative” supports. “Decorative” supports - performing the function of the actual support, are also an element of the structural design of the furniture (i.e., they are clearly visible in the finished product). With their help you can completely change the appearance of your furniture. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be metal, plastic, wood, or a combination.

There are a huge number of “decorative” supports on the modern furniture market, but as experience shows, first of all, this support must be made of high-quality material, and the external coating must meet the highest quality standards. Now there are many different fakes on the market. At first glance, it is sometimes impossible to distinguish a fake from a “original” product, and only during operation do their shortcomings become apparent. The coating fades and falls off, and the load does not correspond to the declared one, since recycled metal is used in fakes.

Furniture fasteners, types and purpose

Confirmat (Euroscrew) is the main furniture fastener. There are two types of confirmations: with a head for a Phillips screwdriver and a hexagon. Euroscrews of different thicknesses and lengths are also offered for sale; the most “running” position for working with 16 mm chipboard is 7x50 mm. Longer confirmations (7x70 mm) are used for fastening chipboards with a thickness of 22 mm. Some craftsmen find it convenient to work with confirmats in the 5x50 mm format; they can be drilled for this type of fastener with one drill, without a countersink. But there should be no doubt about the density and quality of chipboard.

Self-tapping screws 3x16, 3.5x16 or 4x16 mm (different thicknesses to choose from, according to preference) . The most popular type of furniture hardware after confirmations. Absolutely everything is attached to self-tapping screws with a flat countersunk head of 3-4x16 mm format: guides, hinges, legs, flanges, hooks, bearings. Without any advertising, from the experience of ordering hardware for a warehouse, I can say that most assemblers preferred to work with “Shpakovsky” self-tapping screws (SPAX), in such green boxes, arguing that they are easier to tighten and do not “cut” fingers. I think that any self-tapping screws with a flat cross head will do if we are talking about making piece furniture with your own hands, and not about daily production - the difference in quality is unlikely to be critical.

Self-tapping screws 4x30 mm. With a rare step, a hidden flat cross head in black. Used to connect two chipboards in different joints. For example, when attaching a tabletop to slats from the inside, a front to a drawer, or tying tables/cabinets together.

The nails are small. For attaching the back wall and bottoms of fiberboard boxes. Can be replaced with 3x16 mm self-tapping screws if desired. But it is, of course, cheaper to fasten fiberboard with nails. They are purchased based on the perimeter in increments of every 10 cm.

Shelf supports . Serve as a support for removable shelves. For chipboard shelves, conventional “barrel” shelf holders are used, which require a 5 mm hole. There are a lot of other options for glass shelves, in silicone wrapping, with fixing suction cups and gaskets, of different decorative shapes.

Screws for handles. Usually offered together with handles, but sometimes you need to purchase them separately. In particular, when a short screw is supplied with the handle, but you need a long one, designed for double the thickness of chipboard (when attaching the handle through the frame of the drawer and facade).

Metal washers and silicone gaskets. They may also be required for fastening handles when using a façade of non-standard thickness. Washers and spacers are placed on the inside under the head of the screw if it is not possible to screw it in all the way so that the handle does not dangle.

Double-sided tape. It is difficult to classify as hardware, but it fully falls under the definition of “fasteners”. Double-sided tape is used to pre-fix the facades on the box frames in the desired position, before final fastening with 4x30 mm self-tapping screws.

Application area

Supports are needed to give furniture pieces stability. This is a modern fitting, an element produced using the latest technologies and performing a variety of functions:

  • Withstands the heavy weight of the structure and all its contents;
  • Help if it is necessary to rearrange interior parts. The material and shape of the supports reduce friction on the floor covering;
  • Horizontal adjustment for uneven floors;
  • Aesthetics - legs can become a real decoration of furniture, adding charm and originality to it.

The main purpose of the design is to ensure the stability of furniture on any floor covering, raising the structure to a certain height relative to the floor. Adjustable supports, which are used for cabinet furniture, help to assemble plinth and baseless structures. They can be visible or hidden, and some additionally serve as tie rods and swivel wheels.

Open balconies

Furniture for open balconies must be selected taking into account the influence of an aggressive environment, the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays and precipitation.

Compact wooden, metal and wicker furniture would be appropriate here. Instead of a table, stools and a closet, you can use decorated drawers, chests, and benches.

For convenience, make foam pillows and sew removable covers on them.

It would be better if there is light and foldable furniture so that it can be put away for the winter; sun loungers, a metal shelving unit, and elegant bookcases are appropriate.

A good solution is the integrated balcony furniture system designed by Sandy Lam - this is one of the most practical ideas for open and small spaces. The table and chairs are hidden in the floor, forming a single surface, and if necessary, they are taken out and laid out on specially designed legs.

Varieties

Furniture supports must meet the parameters of convenience and practicality. They can also be decorative when installed in areas visible to the eye. Often the legs help to emphasize the stylistic decision of the entire model. So, the legs are:

  1. Adjustable - help compensate for uneven floors, which allows you to level the horizon of the entire structure. Different materials are used to make supports - usually plastic with high strength characteristics or metal. For example, when installing reception desks, it is impossible to do without special screw support legs with nuts. They help to place the stand as evenly as possible and closely connect the individual blocks so that they look like a solid composition. It is important that there are no gaps between them, and that the bottom of the racks is protected from dust. Screw ones are the simplest adjustable furniture supports. When assembling cabinets, cabinets, and chests of drawers, more complex designs with adjustment functions are often used. To change the height, you only need to open the bottom of the cabinet and make adjustments with an ordinary screwdriver. The furniture does not have to be tilted or turned over to tighten it; you can do this without removing things from there. But the price of such supports is an order of magnitude higher, corresponding to the convenience and quality;
  2. A thrust bearing is the simplest type of support leg. It is used to raise furniture above floor level. This helps to increase the operating time due to the fact that it prevents moisture from penetrating the lower part of the cabinets, which causes their deformation. Most often, square furniture supports of this type are made of plastic. It is used for upholstered and cabinet furniture. But if you need to level the structure, it is important to know that the legs will not compensate for uneven floors. The thrust bearings are partially hidden support legs. Due to their small height, they are practically invisible;
  3. Wheeled - wheeled supports - are mounted on furniture that must remain mobile indoors. For example, for lightweight designs of coffee tables, cabinets or armchairs. Often, roller supports are installed in the retractable part of upholstered furniture for comfortable use. For the production of wheel supports, metal or heavy-duty plastic is mainly used. During the selection process, attention should be paid to the safety of a particular product. For cabinet and upholstered furniture, wheel supports of different diameters are suitable, which come with or without a stopper;
  4. Fungus is another type of simple support. It is most convenient to secure cabinet furniture with fungi;
  5. Square furniture support combines several types at once. Usually this is a thrust bearing and adjustable legs. Square furniture support is a reliable design. It makes any items more functional, adds modernity to office and home furnishings;
  6. Swivel wheel system with adjustment function - a variation of supports necessary for heavy interior elements. If you need to move the cabinet, the adjustable parts can be easily unscrewed and it rests on support rollers. After moving the wheels, the adjustable supports are removed and screwed in. Then the cabinet is installed at the required level.

What furniture fittings are needed for a chest of drawers and wardrobes?

Roller guides. The simplest and cheapest type of guides. They cannot provide sufficient load-bearing capacity for large boxes, but they are quite practical and are widely used to equip in-line office furniture and inexpensive serial furniture for the home.

Ball (telescopic) guides. The advantages of telescopic guides include a large load capacity and the ability to ensure full extension of the drawer (roller guides do not extend the drawer all the way, leaving approximately 10-15 cm of internal space under the tabletop, which is not always enough for a full view).

Guides “metaboxes” (metalboxes). Unlike the first two types of guides, the metabox extension system is offered with ready-made metal side walls of a given height (86 mm, 118 mm or 150 mm) and is designed for the installation of a bottom and back made of chipboard. The advantage is obvious: greater load-bearing capacity of the box. Often installed in kitchen cabinets with drawers, chests of drawers, etc.

Expensive extension systems. If you are planning to make drawers in a chest of drawers without a handle, opening by pressing or with closers, smooth automatic closing, immediately decide on the type of drawer system. The fact is that the drawer parts are calculated for them in completely different ways, some require additional modification of the box (a balancing system is installed at the back of the drawer so that the facade is “sensitive” to pressure anywhere and does not warp during movement).

Furniture hinges. They are selected according to the type of facade; they can be internal, overhead, corner, with or without closers, with bowls of different sizes. You can read more about the types of furniture hinges and their purpose here.

Handles and other decorative fittings for chests of drawers and cabinets. When choosing handles, it is important to relate the size of the “base” (the distance between the mounting posts) to the width and length of the facade. For example, in corner kitchens it often turns out that the handle “prevents” the corner module from opening or its end rests against the adjacent facade when opened. Installing a mortise handle can cause some difficulty for a beginner - soberly assess your capabilities and the availability of the tool.

Footrests and legs. Furniture on the base box is installed on ordinary bearings - a plastic gasket between the floor and the end of the sidewall protects the chipboard from swelling (wet cleaning is carried out everywhere, do not forget about this). Also on sale are adjustable thrust bearings that help adjust the height of tables and cabinets on uneven floors.

Here, in general, are all the accessories that you may need to make furniture with your own hands of a simple design. Also, upon completion of assembly, you will need plastic or self-adhesive plugs for confirmations in the color of the chipboard, furniture wax to hide defects, if any are discovered/made during the process of assembling furniture with your own hands. I also recommend that you familiarize yourself with the list of drills required for drilling parts for various types of fasteners. It is better to have one or two copies on hand:

  • Cross bit (for tightening screws).
  • Hexagonal nozzle (for tightening confirmations).
  • Drills with a diameter of 5 mm, 8 mm, confirmation, a thin awl and a marker for marking.

To relax and have a pleasant time at the dacha, you need furniture: tables, chairs, benches. You can make it yourself, or you can resort to the help of specialists. Of course, hand-made garden furniture is a source of pride for its author and creator. But modern manufacturers offer many options for garden furniture made from various materials. And, perhaps, the most durable and practical is country furniture made of metal.

What is a thrust bearing and why is it needed?

Thrust bearings are a furniture element that is installed on the legs to prevent damage to the floor when rearranging cabinets, tables, chairs and other things. It is also used to hide defects on the lower ends of the sides of chests of drawers. Furniture bearings have a wide range of functional purposes.

  1. Protection of floors made of different materials from scratches and other defects;
  2. Simplifying the process of moving furniture;
  3. Protecting the bottom of the cabinets from moisture, thereby increasing the service life of the chests of drawers;
  4. Ability to adjust the slope of the furniture during installation.

The design of the thrust bearing usually consists of durable plastic. The material can withstand significant loads. The shape of the products is round, square and triangular. Self-adhesive support is made of felt. The range of accessories is quite diverse. You can choose the best option for any furniture.

What kind of thrust bearings are used for tables and chairs?

Throats for tables, armchairs, chairs must be durable, practical, provide stability and an attractive appearance. This furniture is not heavy, so light supports are allowed. The diameter of the thrust bearing must correspond to the size of the leg.

Types of thrust bearings for tables and chairs:

  1. Adjustable. This model allows you to control the height of the furniture. Thanks to this, uneven floors can be smoothed out. The appearance of the products is different. Some options are made in a standard style, others are interestingly decorated with decorative elements. Adjustable thrust bearings can withstand significant loads.
  2. Unregulated. Standard supports that are actively used for tables, armchairs, chairs, poufs, cabinets, and cabinets.
  3. Supporting. Allows you to install furniture at a certain height. The thrust bearings include the legs themselves. Their number depends on the design of the furniture.
  4. Wheeled. Allows you to easily move furniture. This is an ideal option for a glass table, shelving, computer chairs in offices. Such models can be equipped with brakes.
  5. The heel ones. This is the cheapest option. Typically, the thrust bearing is round, square or rectangular, and is glued directly to the legs of a table or chair. This option prevents scratches on the floor covering.

Garden furniture made of metal profile

Such furniture is light and modern, since the material for it is aluminum or galvanized steel. Such furniture can combine a metal frame and a tabletop made of any other material (glass, stone, wood). Fabric, metal or polyester mesh, and plastic are used to make the seats and backs of chairs.

Metal garden furniture is also available in folding models. Therefore, if storing garden interior elements in your country house is more convenient for you, pay attention to the types of folding furniture. Please note the presence of plastic bearings in order to maintain the integrity of the floor surface.

Is forging cold or hot?

This is a starting question that needs to be dealt with right away. Forging can be hot or cold. Classic hot forging will allow you to make anything - right down to thin metal lace. But it is only possible with a furnace or forge for high-temperature heating of metals.

For such furnaces, a forge is needed in the form of a separate closed room. It is better not to stutter about the high-level professionalism required in this case... Today our conversation is not about professional blacksmithing, we are talking about methods available to people without special skills. This is cold forging and... welding.

The most democratic way of manufacturing metal products is, without a doubt, welding. Forged chairs, for example, can be made even in your own apartment, just don’t forget about safety. They will turn out to be strong and cheap, but you will have to forget about aesthetics and sophistication.

There is only one way in which you can make real artistic furniture without much expense or skill. This is cold forging. The best solution would be a combination of welding and cold forging; these technologies combine well with each other.

What materials does metal work with?

One of the main advantages of forged furniture for residential premises is the excellent aesthetic and technological combination of metal with other materials:

  • Glass. Perhaps the most familiar partner for the eye is metal. Glass countertops have been made for a long time. And this is understandable: transparent details allow you to see all the main forged beauty in the form of spirals, curls and metallic waves.
  • Tree. A huge number of seating options in chairs, benches, sofas: cold durable metal with warm soft wood are excellent partners.
  • Stone. Stone is a heavy material, but the strength of forged products allows you to use even stone elements. Stone countertops are a special aesthetic with a long history. Both natural and artificial stone are excellent.
  • Leather. Forged chairs and armchairs with seats covered in genuine leather will become the main decoration of any interior. By the way, modern artificial leather is not inferior in appearance to natural leather, and is superior to it in practicality of use. So the choice of leather is the widest.
  • Plastic. Previously, people frowned at this word: “cheap.” Today, plastics are serious competitors to any other natural materials, sometimes it even seems that they are winning...

DIY furniture, stages of the main process

How to make furniture, step by step:

  1. Creating a sketch or drawing. The space for creativity is large, but not limitless. The fact is that decorative patterns will be limited by technical capabilities: everything will depend on the availability of certain cold forging machines. But even within these limits, excellent designs can be designed. To decide on your idea, you can view a huge number of examples of forged furniture for every taste in the pictures of any search engine.
  2. Procurement of materials. From a technical point of view, the most suitable for welding with forging are rolled metal sheets and metal profiles. For forged decorative elements, you do not need to buy thick rods - you will not be able to create patterns from thick rods.
  3. Manufacturing of basic and decorative parts. The general principle in the manufacture of forged furniture is welding of load-bearing structures in the form of frames and backs, if any, followed by fastening and reliable joining with the drawers.
  4. Fastening parts - product layout. The parts are connected by two methods - welding or using special decorative clamps, which are made in advance. Clamps are a troublesome task, but they are worth it: the furniture looks professional and aesthetically pleasing. Therefore, it is best to use welding for connections of the main frames that are hidden from view, and connect external decorative elements using forged clamps. Welding tip: thin-walled tubes should be welded very carefully; they can easily be burned through holes.
  5. Final processing. At this stage, you can give full play to your imagination. Modern coatings, primers and paints make it possible to turn your new products into a unique work of interior art. For example, a number of polymer coatings help to cope with one of the main disadvantages of metal objects - a surface that is cold to the touch. Primers will protect the metal from corrosion. Well, metal paints will allow you to choose not only the most exquisite color, but also the degree of gloss: for some a white matte chair, and for others a sparkling green table. Before priming and painting, preliminary cleaning of seams and joints cannot be neglected.

Wrought iron beds

Of the wide range of forged furniture in general, beds occupy a special place in popularity and artistic diversity. This is explained simply: forged metal beds are much stronger and more durable than any beds made from other materials. Forged beds with your own hands - making them is much easier than it might seem at first glance. Such work will require effort, but it is quite possible to complete it without special skills in metal work, and this is the most important thing.

If you decide to make a simple structure, then it can be installed without problems: there are no complex bent parts in it. The materials for this option will be extremely simple and in a minimal set: the base is made of a profile pipe with a diameter of 20 mm, the frame is made using channels measuring 65 x 32 mm, metal corners and thin sheet steel 2 mm thick for plugs.

Forged chairs - examples of work.

The welding equipment you will need is the simplest: an angle grinder, a welding machine, a drill with drills for metal, files, sandpaper, a metal brush. If your bed in the project is planned with decorative elements, you will need cold forging machines.

  • The first step in assembling a bed is always to assemble both headboards. Welding of parts is carried out at right angles and with mandatory strict control of diagonals. It is better to do all this on a flat surface.
  • The brackets are the most important part of the bed; they bear the main load. They are made from channels and welded with a continuous seam to the headboards of the bed. There are two central and four side brackets in total.
  • Assembling the frame for the mattress. The end metal corners are connected to the drawers - frames that connect the legs of the bed. It is important to ensure the reliability of joining and welding of the transverse parts with the frames.
  • Installation of the backs and frames begins with holes in the frames for the tenons of the brackets. Then the backrests are placed vertically to attach the welded frame to them.
  • The mattress grid is made of steel longitudinal and transverse strips, which are welded to the frame. Plugs for the legs and thrust bearings - devices for protecting the floor - are also welded at this stage.
  • Decoration. From the very beginning - cleaning and sanding all seams and joints. You should spare no effort and time for this work: the surface for further painting must be ideal, only then will your bed become the subject of an exclusive design. Before painting, do not forget about priming.

Pros and cons of wrought iron furniture

There are many advantages:

  • The first main thing is durability, strength, reliability. It does not deform over time and is not susceptible to damage from insects. Of all the possible types of furniture, this is the best option for the category of things “forever.”
  • Special and unique aesthetics.
  • The ability to give the interior a more expensive and solid look without investing much money.
  • Forged furniture is out of fashion; when designing it, the question will never arise whether it is fashionable. Plus, it can be done in a variety of artistic styles.
  • The versatility and “partnership” of metal in relation to other materials: natural and artificial materials are perfectly combined.
  • Environmental Safety.

The disadvantages cannot be ignored:

  • Massiveness, heaviness. These properties become a disadvantage only in cases where the owners often move from place to place or like to rearrange the house.
  • Forged furniture is not very suitable for small apartments. Of course, forged chairs with a table can be made elegant and visually airy, but they do not fold and require their own space in the apartment. Forged furniture is not very friendly with other interior items; it has its own character.
  • Metal surface that is cold to the touch. This disadvantage can be eliminated with the help of modern polymer coatings.

As you can see, forged furniture has many more advantages than disadvantages. These products have occupied a special place in interior design for centuries. Making your own pieces of metal furniture is an exciting, creative and very profitable endeavor. We wish you success!

What kind of thrust bearings are installed on the cabinet?

To prevent scratches and give furniture mobility, they install thrust bearings in cabinets. Since this is quite large furniture, the supports must withstand a significant load. The material for such products is usually plastic or metal.

For cabinets, a rectangular thrust bearing with an adjustment function is often used. Setting up such devices is quite simple using a screwdriver. To adjust, you don’t need to disassemble the cabinet or even remove things from it, which is very convenient.

For upholstered cabinet furniture, you can take the simplest square thrust bearing, the material for which is plastic. This option raises the cabinet, thereby protecting it from moisture. This model cannot compensate for floor unevenness. The supports are almost invisible, as they are small in size.

For large volume cabinets, a rotary wheel system is used. If rearrangement is necessary, the adjustable elements are replaced with wheels. The device can be adjusted in height.

Thrust bearings are not installed in built-in wardrobes. The ends of the furniture are hidden, so they do not need protection from moisture or adjustment to the floor height. The edges are also covered with plastic film.

Is it possible to repair a broken thrust bearing?

Repair of thrust bearings depends on the design of the device and its type, as well as the breakdown. If the body of a plastic product is damaged, then this option needs to be replaced. If the problem is in the control mechanism, then you can try to fix the problem.

A thrust bearing is usually an inexpensive product. Sometimes you have to spend a lot more on repairs. In addition, such manipulations take a lot of time. The owner himself decides whether to repair the support or not. In any case, repairs can be done.

Door handles as the main type of furniture fittings

There are three main types of door handles:

  • stationary;
  • with a push mechanism;
  • rotary.

Today, stationary handles are rarely used. They do not have a lock, they only allow the door to be pulled or pushed, and therefore are most often used for decorative purposes.

Handles with a push mechanism are characterized by the presence of a latch that is activated when the handle is pressed. This allows you to open or close the door.

Installation of the thrust bearing

Installation of the thrust bearing includes several successive steps. First you need to turn the cabinet over to gain access to the bottom of the furniture. Then marking is carried out. It is necessary to measure 5 cm from the corner and the bottom. Then, at the measured distance, lines are made that intersect each other, creating a right angle.

Next, the thrust bearing is applied to the completed marking. One hole should fall on the intersection, and the other two should take place directly on the lines themselves. These places must be marked and indentations made. Simply punch holes using a regular nail.

Then you can install the thrust bearing on the furniture. Self-tapping screws are used for fastening. It is important to perform the operation carefully, adjusting the position of the support in the process. All plugs are attached in the same way.

General properties of metal country furniture

Garden furniture made of metal is made specifically for use outdoors; it is not afraid of adverse natural influences. With the help of special anti-corrosion paint or polymer coating that is used to treat metal parts, such furniture will serve you for quite a long time.

In addition to durability and practicality, metal furniture has another undeniable advantage - elegance. Curved smooth lines and simple patterns create a feeling of lightness and ease.
