Eight ways to use mosaics in the design of your plot and garden area

Since ancient times, mosaic panels have served as a wonderful decoration for any home.
Mosaic panels, without a doubt, will become the main “highlight” of any interior. This decor is widely popular in Asian countries, but in recent decades it has found its niche in the Russian consumer market. How does a mosaic panel differ from an ordinary ornament? First of all, the abundance of materials from which it is created. Manufacturers of fine finishing keep up with the times and are already offering consumers various types of panels, for example, textured glass, ceramics and even marble.

Mosaic panels as decoration

Mosaic is one of the most complex and at the same time attractive decorative elements for interior decoration. It consists of several elements that combine into a single overall picture. This decor can be used to decorate not only a wall, but also the floor, ceiling, facade of a house, or even a decorative garden path. Application areas are limited solely by imagination.

Conventionally, mosaic panels, which are used specifically in interior decoration, are divided into:

  • Ceramic;
  • Glass;
  • Stone;
  • Mirror;
  • Marble;
  • Metal;
  • Combined.

The most common ones are considered to be ceramic, glass and stone. And it is their production that is a priority for manufacturers of building materials.

Mosaic on the wall: original solutions in interior design

Many people think that mosaics are only good for the bathroom or kitchen. But if you approach the issue of interior design creatively, a panel or multi-colored wall will look great in any other room.

The color and pattern of the mosaic on the wall is selected in accordance with the style used and the general color scheme. In residential premises, as a rule, one wall or its fragment is covered, and it is they who are assigned the role of an accenting element. Next, we will tell you about all the secrets of working with mosaics and present many interesting examples of such designs.

How to fit a mosaic into the interior, and what types it comes in

When dealing with mosaics, the biggest difficulty may arise not in the work, but in the choice of design, the material itself, which can have a wide variety of shapes and colors. To make the task easier, you need to think in advance about how the remaining walls will be decorated.

Any accent is made in contrast to the main background, but must be combined with something else in the interior:

  • With textiles and accessories.

  • With basic background and furniture

  • The entire interior can be made in the same color scheme, but with several shades of different saturation.

  • Mosaic can be combined with floor coverings, curtains, and portal decoration.

In a large room, mosaics can be used to decorate not only a fragment, but also the entire wall

  • Mosaic tiles are ideal for finishing decorative niches, which can be provided not only in the bathroom, but also in the living room or bedroom.

  • If this is a working wall in the kitchen, then ideally the shades of the furniture should be visible in it.

Multicolor panel on the kitchen working wall

  • A multi-colored panel can be the only accent in the room, balancing the monotony of the rest of the decoration.

Mosaics can also be used to decorate a bedroom.

  • The entire walls can be decorated with mosaics only in the bathroom, but you need to think through the design carefully so that it doesn’t turn out too colorful or completely monotonous. The ideal option, in our opinion, is presented as an example below.

What to choose from

In all the photos that we presented as a sample, the design was made using ceramic, glass or smalt mosaic. But this is not the only thing that can be used for interior decoration - after all, we are talking not only about bathrooms, but also about living spaces.

Mosaic on a grid is very convenient for work

We will give relevant examples, but let’s first clarify the concept of mosaic.

  • This word comes from the Italian mosaico, and in French it sounds similar - mosaïque. It denotes a type of applied decorative art in which a picture is created by composing a composition from small fragments of stone, glass or tiles, metal elements, beads, and natural pebbles.

Not everyone can work with piece mosaics.

  • Executing an ornament or a complex design, especially when the elements do not have the correct geometric shape, is very difficult and time-consuming. Hence the high cost of services of highly qualified specialists.
  • To enable people to save on such work by doing it themselves, manufacturers began to produce mosaics in the form of enlarged blocks with a well-thought-out ornament.
  • They are similar in shape and size to traditional ceramic tiles, but differ in texture. There is a base made of fiberglass mesh onto which mosaic elements are glued. They can have either the same shape or a different one - this already depends on the design of the tile, which was developed by its manufacturer.

An example of a tile made from elements of different sizes

  • The convenience of working with such tiles lies not only in the fact that thanks to the grid you have a ready-made pattern. Fiberglass mesh is a reinforcing element, so you will not need to glue it separately before installation, as is done with loose mosaics. Once such a tile sticks, it is impossible to tear it off from the base without tearing off a layer of plaster along with it.
  • Mosaic cladding can be done in other ways. For example, you can take the same ceramic tiles, but in the smallest format (50*50 mm) in several variants of well-combined colors, as shown in the example below.

Regular small tiles, but in different colors

Unexpected shapes

However, small tiles can have not only the shape of a square or brick, but also a hexagon, rhombus or even scales, which looks simply incomparable on the walls. In this case, it does not matter at all whether such a coating will be assembled from individual small tiles, or whether large slabs with the corresponding texture applied to them are used. The second option is even preferable, as it allows you to speed up the cladding process.

You can see what the final result could be in the examples below:

Finishing a fragment of a wall, eclectic style

True, it is quite difficult to find similar tiles in provincial stores. It is mainly produced in Spain and is expensive, so stores are not eager to invest money in a hard-to-sell product. People who want to buy such tiles usually have them delivered to order.

Extravaganza of color

You can make it simpler - look for tiles not in a mosaic design, but with a mosaic pattern, which is produced by almost all manufacturers today. It does not have an ornament of small fragments, but simply a corresponding design.

Such tiles are in demand because they are well suited for a certain interior style: oriental, patchwork, Provence, eclecticism, pop art. Here are some examples of wall designs using such tiles:

Textile art mosaic panel

Decorative panels made from textiles appeared relatively recently. It was invented by those who prefer to create various installations with their own hands, and who understand cutting and sewing.

In particular, the technique of creating panels was largely taken from patchwork - patchwork sewing, which also implies sewing a mosaic product. Only in this case it is possible to make not only some kind of abstract work, but also, for example, a matrix canvas from small pieces, which from a distance looks like flowers.

When creating a textile panel, you should adhere to the following rules:

  • Use fabric of approximately the same texture;
  • You can paint after creating the composition;
  • Textiles can be attached to a wooden base (chipboard, fibreboard, QSB) with glue, rather than stitched.

Preparatory stage

Laying mosaics is a difficult type of work. It requires special preparation of all surfaces of the room being finished. First of all, of course, it is necessary to make a regular cement screed on the floor of the room. This is required in order to eliminate all unevenness in the floor. After which you need to let it dry. This will take you at least 10 days.

If all surfaces are smooth, then in this case it is possible to lay the mosaic without this preparatory operation. Before you start work, decide on the color of the material and purchase everything you need to lay the mosaic itself, and don’t forget about the tools that are so necessary when working.

But, of course, before you go buy the material, you need to take measurements of the room, then calculate how much mosaic will be needed, and how much glue will be needed for this. And only then start working.

You can also make a mosaic yourself at home, for example, from tiles. To do this, you just need a special tool that will allow you to cut the tiles into the necessary parts, as well as additional materials and tools for the work.

Glass mosaic panel for the ceiling: what you need to consider

Floor mosaic panels are found everywhere. Is it possible to move it to the ceiling? Why not? Representatives of the Sicis company thought the same thing, releasing a whole series of panels directly for the ceiling. It is made of ceramic, which is covered with glass on top. Why not varnish or some other material? Because it is glass that allows you to create an interesting variation of lighting, when sconces are attached around the perimeter of the room, and thanks to the rays directed upward, they are reflected, making the room visually larger.

When mounting an artistic glass panel on the ceiling, the following is taken into account:

  • The total mass of the structure is approximately 80 kilograms per square meter;
  • Installation is carried out specifically on the main ceiling, and not on an additional suspended level;
  • It is better to assemble the panels immediately on the floor, and only then transfer the tiles one by one to the ceiling.

Proper laying

That's all, the room is completely ready, all the necessary materials and tools have been purchased. Now we can safely start laying. If the design you have in mind is small in size, then before you lay it out on the wall, you need to assemble it on the floor. And then transfer it in small sections to the prepared surface.

In order for the material to be securely attached, the glue must be applied no more than 1 centimeter thick. Then carefully apply the element to the surface.

To make your work more convenient, you can use the following list of available tools:

  • Notched spatula. Necessary in order to evenly distribute the glue over the entire surface.
  • A mounting knife cuts the film that holds the mosaic together.
  • Metal tweezers are used to split decorative pieces into small pieces.

At the end of the work, you will need to cover the seams of the mosaic being laid out with a special grout. This way you reduce the risk of damaging the decorative surface of the mosaic.

It should also be noted that this grouting at the seams must be done after the glue has completely dried, otherwise you can ruin all your work. For wet rooms, a grout is generally used that will protect the material from strong humidity. This can be a cement grout or a base grout that includes epoxy resins. The latter type protects the joints in the mosaic from harmful chemicals used for cleaning bathrooms.

Decorating the walls of the house with mosaics

Any smooth vertical surface is simply intended for mosaic decoration. If the territory of the site is surrounded by a high smooth fence, its entire area can be decorated with mosaic elements. It is best to create a floral design. It is perfect for a small area. This design can create the illusion of a spacious, large garden.

A mosaic canvas can also be used to cover part of the façade of a country house, which is adjacent to the recreation area. To do this, you can use your own imagination and come up with an original pattern or use a ready-made panel.

If the site has garden or retaining walls that can be decorated with mosaics, then you can avoid using any complex compositions or a large number of ornamental shrubs and trees in the landscape.

Mosaic and garden furniture

Concrete, metal or wooden garden furniture, if desired, can also be decorated with bright mosaic designs. Modern adhesives allow you to fix mosaics on almost any hard surface. Mosaics are especially often used to decorate garden tables. Concrete chairs or benches will also be transformed if you line them with ceramic or glass shards, although this option is still more suitable for southern regions with hot, long summers.
