If you want to decorate your interior in an original way, harmoniously combining stylish modern and majestic classics, designers recommend using not a sofa, but a sofa as upholstered furniture. This product is by no means new; it has been known since the 17th century, but until recently it was distributed only in eastern countries. In fact, a classic sofa is a small, original sofa; it differs from its familiar analogue by interesting armrests and an ornate back. Excellent performance characteristics and compact dimensions of the furniture allow it to be placed in any room - living room, bedroom, loggia, narrow hallway. A huge range of models makes it possible to successfully play with the most daring interior solutions.

Types of sofa

Several main types:

  • Double. It is quite relevant, has a reliable transformation mechanism, due to which a wide, spacious and flat double bed is provided, without differences in height and depressions.
  • One and a half truck. It is a comfortable place to sleep, both for one person and, if desired, for two people.
  • Single. This design is small in size and compact, which allows you to significantly save space, while providing a comfortable additional sleeping place.

The photo shows a double sofa, made in white in the bedroom interior.

Quite often, such structures are equipped with a spacious drawer for linen or other things, thus creating an additional storage system in the room.

Styles and design

A sofa made in a classic style is suitable for most design solutions. High-tech, minimalism, Scandinavian style, Provence, which is popular today - for all these options a similar piece of furniture can be an excellent addition. It will fit ideally into a room with elements of oriental flavor.

Such a sofa can become a comfortable and beautiful addition to the design of a corridor or kitchen. It does not take up much space and can be used in confined spaces. Another advantage is the use of the simplest transformation mechanisms that even a child can handle.

How to choose the best children's sofa - basic criteria, useful tips

The most suitable option for a child's room is a sofa in a bright color or with interesting patterns on the back or pillows. It is comfortable for a child to sleep on it, since it is wider than most children's and teenage beds. A smooth, moderately hard bed forms correct posture.

The model without a back will organically fit into the space of a modern interior. The model has a comfortable, not too wide sleeping area, often complemented by pillows of different sizes or a bolster along the entire length of the structure. When assembled, it resembles a sofa, but has much more compact dimensions.

The option without armrests will ideally complement the space of the living room, children's room and even the kitchen. This furniture looks modern. Due to the absence of armrests, it takes up less space in the room. Even with the most inconvenient room layout, there will always be a small corner or suitable niche for it.

A modular sofa is a model made up of several parts that can be arranged at your own discretion . It can form a rectangle, an angle, or line up in a U-shape. Additional elements of such a module can serve as a pouf or armchair, unifying the interior, creating a stylish composition. This model will differ absolutely slightly from the sofa (only by the lack of smooth lines), the sleeping place is comfortable and wide.

What is the difference between a sofa and an ottoman, couch and sofa?

The sofa is low in height and has a back with armrests located at the same level, unlike an ottoman or couch, which most often are not equipped with a headrest and armrests. Compared to a sofa, it has a more compact size and a slimmer frame, and is also more rigid than a sofa model.

Manufacturers of upholstered furniture

Upholstered furniture for the kitchen is produced by both large and small enterprises. In almost any furniture showroom you can find exhibitions of such major manufacturers as:

  • "Furniture of the Chernozem Region";
  • "Good style";
  • "Your style";
  • Classen et al.

Buying furniture from large factories has its positive and negative sides. Ordering a sofa from a well-known manufacturer guarantees high quality, low price, and free delivery. However, if the kitchen dimensions are non-standard or a special design is needed, large factories are unlikely to be able to satisfy such a request. We will have to turn to small manufacturers working on individual projects.

Sofa shapes and sizes

Small models most often have single beds and fit perfectly into small spaces. Narrow products, with a width of no more than 50-60 cm, are stationary structures without a transformation mechanism.

The photo shows the interior of the living room with a corner sofa in gray shades.

The model, located at an angle, is universal and provides the ability to choose the right or left direction of rotation, thereby stylishly designing the space taking into account all its features.

Which type should you prefer?

Currently, the range of upholstered furniture is so wide that choosing a product among all kinds of sofas becomes quite problematic. In the pursuit of expanding the model range by manufacturers, the distinctive boundaries of the sofas described above are being erased. Most models are called “sofa-couch” or “sofa-ottoman” because the manufacturer himself was unable to clearly define the purpose of the product.

When choosing upholstered furniture for each specific room, pay attention to the missing functionality. If it's just an aesthetic addition, then a daybed sofa is perfect. If this is the main sleeping place, then a sofa-sofa, if it is an additional one, then a sofa-ottoman.

With a wide variety of textures and colors to choose from, there is sure to be the perfect option for your room. What will you choose now: a sofa-sofa, a couch or an ottoman?

What are the transformation mechanisms?

Modern pieces of furniture have a variety of mechanisms, each of which functions in its own way:

  • Tick tock.
  • Eurobook.
  • Dolphin.
  • Roll-out mechanism.
  • Accordion.
  • French folding bed.

The photo shows a sofa with a carved wooden back and armrests, equipped with a roll-out mechanism.

The sofa has fairly durable and reliable folding transformation mechanisms, is very easy to disassemble and provides a perfectly flat and most comfortable place to sleep.

Sliding ottoman

If the decision is made in favor of a pull-out sofa, then a little “pre-purchase” research is also necessary here.

You should definitely sit down on the sofa and make sure that the retractable part does not move out from under the person sitting.

Don’t be lazy and call a consultant for help. The seller will show you all the nuances of using the sofa: unfold and fold it, and then offer to repeat it yourself.

There are several requirements that must be met when purchasing a folding double ottoman.

It is better if the sliding part is on rollers - this will make it easier to fold and unfold every day, especially important if the future purchase is designed for two people.

The sleeping area simply must be perfectly level;

Each of the moving parts needs rigid fixation - this will prevent the parts from detaching from each other at night. Another concern for the moving parts is that the wood and plywood do not touch in any way, which will eliminate creaking.

Sofa design options

Quite often in design there are wicker rattan models that are distinguished by their beautiful, light appearance and do not clutter up the space. Such furniture is placed in a country house, a country house or a city apartment.

Also, products with wooden armrests look very comfortable and cozy, creating a rather original and interesting design. To complement the appearance of these structures, decor with pillows, a blanket or a beautiful bedspread is used, this way it is possible to give them completeness and make them a noticeable interior element.

Models with a high back and products decorated with a carriage tie, which can be decorated with furniture studs or rhinestones, have an equally attractive design. For a luxurious and at the same time especially cozy design, designs with three backs or a sofa with a soft headboard are used.

The photo shows a nursery for a girl with a narrow turquoise sofa, decorated with a carriage frame.

Forged options are especially unique, they are a real work of art and form a non-banal interior.

Manufacturing technology and materials

Any sofa consists of a frame and soft elements.

The frame is the basis of upholstered furniture on which all other parts are fixed. It bears most of the load, so it is important that it is made of durable materials. The most common models are on metal, wood and chipboard frames.

Furniture with a metal frame is strong and durable. During operation, steel elements do not require special care, are fireproof and are little subject to wear.

The wooden frame makes the sofa environmentally friendly. The wood used in production undergoes special processing and becomes a durable material that can withstand enormous loads.

A frame made of laminated chipboard is the most budget option, but it is worth remembering that when moisture gets in, this material swells. The maximum service life of sofas with such a frame is no more than 3-5 years, then it will have to be changed.

For the production of upholstered furniture elements, the following components are used:

  • upholstery materials;
  • filler.

When choosing fabric, it is important to consider not only the style of the kitchen and its color scheme, but also the frequency of use of the furniture, the presence of pets and small children.

The most common types of upholstery materials:

  • jacquard;
  • chenille;
  • matting;
  • artificial leather.

Matting, chenille and artificial leather have the highest level of resistance to abrasion and mechanical damage.

To fill the soft parts of the sofa, polyurethane foam and a spring block are mainly used. Polyurethane foam is an elastic and durable finely porous material of varying densities that does not crumble or wrinkle over time. Independent spring blocks are made of spring wire and spunbond.

Sofas with an independent spring block are suitable for daily use as a sleeping place, but their cost is significantly higher than that of models with polyurethane foam filling. Therefore, if the kitchen upholstered furniture is not intended for daily sleep, it makes no sense to overpay for this type of filler.

Color examples

When choosing a color scheme for this furniture, first of all, take into account the overall shade scheme of the room. For example, a white sofa has a particularly refreshing look, which harmonizes perfectly with almost any setting; to create a brighter and more creative design, choose blue models, and for a spectacular and cheerful interior, options in yellow tones.

The photo shows a Chesterfield sofa made in pink in a living room interior in light colors.

A blue shade is suitable for a light and sophisticated decoration of a room, pink tones will give the space elegance and rich gloss, burgundy color will give the room luxury and pomp, and picturesque beige and deep gray will become a universal option for almost any design solution.

Scheme and drawing

Before manufacturing any piece of furniture, it is necessary to prepare a competent drawing with all dimensions . There are different methods for this:

  • You can find a suitable option on the Internet. Most people prefer this option. Depending on personal wishes and preferences, the found drawing can be modified and improved.
  • You can contact a specialized company for the manufacture and assembly of furniture. Here they will not only make a truly thoughtful diagram of future furniture in all projections, but will also offer to cut out the necessary details. All that remains for you is to assemble the furniture correctly, according to the diagram you have on hand.
  • Use special computer programs. They will accurately calculate all dimensions and provide a drawing in three variations.

Each user chooses the best option for himself. Some even prefer to draw the diagram of the sofa themselves on a piece of paper. But for this you need to have some experience in making furniture items.

What does a sofa look like in the interior of an apartment?

Examples of using this furniture in various rooms.

In the kitchen

The sofa will be an excellent alternative to a sofa. A design with a sleeping place can complement the interior of a kitchen or dining room, fulfilling its direct purpose, or act as a zoning element in the kitchen-living room.

In the children's room

These products are the most popular solution for children's rooms, both boys and girls. Designs with sides are often decorated with soft upholstery with elastic filling, which provides absolute safety for the child. Models are also equipped with drawers for bedding or other small items, thereby freeing up additional space for games in the room.

The photo shows a nursery for a girl, decorated with a sofa with drawers.

Teenagers choose products with a more original and youthful design, in the form of comfortable, compact sliding structures that, when folded, can be used for hanging out with friends.

In the living room

In the living room, a sofa is mainly used as a comfortable and beautiful seating area, which harmoniously complements the furniture ensemble and is perfect for accommodating guests. It is desirable that this product be consistent with the design of the room and match the color of other interior elements.

In the hallway or corridor

An elegant, small and laconic design will fit perfectly into the hallway, where it will not clutter up the space and take up a large amount of free space, which is often very small in the hallway.

To the bedroom

In the interior of a bedroom, a sofa most often serves a decorative function. It can be located at the foot of the bed or in combination with a floor lamp and bookshelves to create a cozy corner for relaxation. A fairly relevant solution for small rooms is a design equipped with a linen drawer.

To the balcony

Due to their compact size, these mini-products easily fit into the space of a balcony or loggia, adding special functionality to it.

Standard sizes of sofas: anatomical justification

Standard means statistically average, most acceptable, convenient, in demand. Every person has probably had to sit alone on one chair or sleep in a four-person tent with five neighbors at least once in their life. Isolated cases are quite acceptable, but you should rest every day in the conditions that anatomy, physiology and medicine have determined for the body.

Standard sizes of sofas folded and unfolded

For a sitting position, a person needs 50 cm, for a lying position - 70 cm (non-standard body composition in this case is not taken into account). The standard sizes of sofas are determined based on these indicators. The main parameters of the products are the following:

  1. Height. Distance from the floor to the highest point of the backrest.
  2. Length. The gap between the extreme side points (for straight models, for corner models the length of each part is determined separately).
  3. Width. The distance between the end points of the front and rear edges of the lower soft block (when unfolded, the length turns into the width of the berth).

When choosing a sofa, you need to take into account the anatomy and physiology of the people who will use it

In accordance with the size indicators, the following types of sofas are distinguished:

  1. Full size. They have a length of 180-200 cm, width when folded - 80-90 cm.
  2. One and a half. The length is 140-170 cm, the width when folded is 70-90 cm.
  3. Little ones (babies). Length – 120-150 cm, width – 70-80 cm.

It should be noted that the main role in the classification is played by the length, that is, the number of seats. The width and height of sofas can be the same for models of different types.

The main parameters to consider are height, width and length

Helpful advice! When choosing a sofa, you can increase the medically recommended amount of space per person, this will only increase the level of comfort. A decrease is extremely undesirable, as this will certainly negatively affect the quality of rest.

Double folding sofas for sleeping and relaxing

Double folding sofas are the most popular models. They are installed both in living rooms and in offices. Such sofas can have a variety of sizes and shapes. If the furniture is mainly used for sitting, you can purchase a sofa that folds forward. When folded, the length of the seat is 140-150 cm. This area can comfortably accommodate two people. The model is also perfect as a sleeping option. When unfolded, the length will automatically become wide, allowing two people to lie down comfortably.

The most versatile option is a double fold-out sofa.

If you do not plan to use the sofa as a sleeping place, you can purchase a non-folding model. The soft part of such structures is often conventionally delimited by pillows, both upper ones, complementing the backrest, and lower ones (that is, the seating areas are made in the form of pillows tightly laid on the frame). Such collapsible sofas have a number of advantages:

  • they are easier to move if necessary;
  • convenient to clean;
  • It's more comfortable to sit together.

If you plan to sleep on the sofa, then first of all you need to take into account the size of the furniture when unfolded.

When purchasing a double sofa bed, special attention should be paid to the dimensions when unfolded. For daily use, the folding mechanism is also important. If transformation requires significant effort and time, operation will become burdensome.

Sofa "Eurobook": sizes of full-size models, children's upholstered furniture

A fairly common model of sofas is “Eurobook”. The folding mechanism should be considered one of the most affordable and durable. The operating principle is as follows:

Standard sizes of sofas with Eurobook transformation mechanism

  1. With little effort, the lower part of the sofa moves forward. Sliding can be provided either by rollers or wide plastic legs.
  2. The backrest is lowered into the niche that appears, forming a flat sleeping surface.

Helpful advice! If the floor covering is easily damaged by mechanical impact, it is better to abandon the model on casters.

Sofas with the Eurobook mechanism are the most reliable and durable

The length of many models of such sofas is 180 cm. These dimensions allow you to lower the back without difficulty. The height of such sofas usually reaches 80-90 cm, which allows you to organize a sleeping place of 180x190 cm. Some models of Eurobook sofas are 200 cm long; when unfolded, the sleeping place is 180x200 cm.

How to choose furniture for your home of optimal dimensions. Corner sofas in rooms for various purposes.

Almost all sofas with such a sliding mechanism have a box for linen. The larger the overall dimensions of the furniture, the more spacious and capacious the niche. A certain place to store bedding is always an additional advantage of a sofa designed for sleeping.

There are quite a lot of Eurobook models among oversized upholstered furniture. Sofas 150 cm (length) are often used when arranging children's rooms, and this is a convenient option for growth. Until a certain time, the baby has enough space on an unfurnished sofa. Later, the structure can be transformed into a spacious sleeping bed.

Design features and compact sizes of “Click-clack” sofas

Sofas with a folding “Click-Click” mechanism have gained popularity among young people and all supporters of minimalism in the interior design of living rooms. Such products are an improved version of conventional folding “Books”. The mechanism has become more reliable, and the folding process has become much easier.

With the same dimensions, “Knizhki” sofas look much more massive than designs with the “Click-Click” mechanism. And the reason is primarily in the original design of the latter. They do not have massive armrests; they are replaced by raised side parts, which can be easily lowered if necessary.

The main advantages of sofas with the “Click-clack” mechanism include the following:

  1. The ability to transform into three positions: for comfortable sitting, for a more comfortable rest, reclining and for sleeping.
  2. High strength. The frame is made of metal.
  3. Interesting design. The products are distinguished by their unusual shape and original upholstery fabric.
  4. When unfolded, they form a perfectly flat surface.

Sofas with a “click-clack” mechanism can be transformed into three positions.
The most common length of sofas is 170 cm. Such models are appropriate in small rooms. Structural minimalism allows you to place sofas with a length of 190-200 cm in rooms with limited space.

Typical sizes of corner sofas with a berth

A corner sofa is an opportunity to provide the maximum number of comfortable seats for relaxation. The aesthetic component should not be diminished either. This design is an interior accent of the room, creating a certain atmosphere.

Based on the shape, two types of corner sofas are distinguished:

  • L-shaped;
  • U-shaped.

Models of the first option can have both large and small sizes. Large corner upholstered furniture is usually installed in large rooms. The length of this design is traditionally 350x200 cm.

Helpful advice! When choosing a long corner sofa, you should also consider its height. Even in a spacious room, but with low ceilings, tall furniture will look bulky.

Small corner sofas are often purchased for small living rooms and children's rooms. Their dimensions can be very different. Usually the long side is never less than 150 cm. This is explained by the fact that almost all L-shaped sofas are transformed, creating a sleeping place. The folding mechanisms used are very different, but the most popular are “Eurobook” and “Accordion”.

Corner sofas with a berth come in two types: L- and U-shaped

U-shaped corner sofas are the prerogative of large living rooms. Among such models there are many non-folding structures. Such furniture with a table installed in the center creates an excellent relaxation area that can accommodate a large number of people. The length of the central part of such a sofa is usually at least 350 cm.

Folding mechanism “Accordion”: sofa sizes, design features

A large number of folding sofas produced by the furniture industry are equipped with an “Accordion” mechanism. When folded, the design has a double backrest, which provides a sleeping place. When unfolding such a model, you must perform the following steps:

  1. Raise the lower part until a characteristic click appears.
  2. Pull towards yourself using little effort. The structural elements will be located horizontally in one plane.
  3. To fold, perform the steps in reverse order.

The sizes of folding sofas "Accordion" are most often small. The length is 150-160 cm, height – 90 cm. When unfolded, they form a full-fledged sleeping place for two people.

These sofas are distinguished by some design features. As a rule, armrests are made of wood or metal. The furniture looks stylish and uncluttered. Sometimes the armrests are replaced with side pillows, which are comfortable to lean on and lie down on. The upholstery for sofas is colorful (“newspaper”, abstraction, floral motifs), which gives the products a special originality.

Not often, but massive products are also found among the “Accordion” models. This appearance is ensured by wide armrests. Such furniture options have plain or combined upholstery.

For comfortable relaxation in privacy: single sofa

All single sofas can be divided into two categories:

  • models for several seats with one bed;
  • with one seat and one bed.

Single sofas can be designed for one seat or several.
The first category includes all full-size straight non-folding sofas. Any similar structure with a length of at least 180 cm can be used as a bed for one adult. Sofas without a back should also be included in this category. These are also non-folding structures. They are often supplemented with niches for linen, which can be accessed by lifting the main part. Such models are often used for daytime rest, but if necessary, they fully replace a sleeping place. Some products have a headboard design - a cushion cushion or a decorative corner backrest.

Manufacturers offer many options for sofas for one person. These are models with and without armrests, with various folding mechanisms, with boxes for linen, with removable covers, mobile structures on wheels and stationary products with legs. Such options are chosen not only by teenagers, but also by adults who prefer to relax in solitude.

Any sofa 130 cm (length) should be considered a single-seater. For a more comfortable rest, it is most often supplemented with pillows.

Helpful advice! If you need to purchase a single-seater sofa with a drawer for linen, you should pay attention to models with an “Accordion” folding mechanism.

Photos of sofas in various styles

In the Provence style, the sofa is mainly made of natural materials in light shades. Such designs are distinguished by pastel-colored fabric upholstery, decorated with various striped, checkered or unobtrusive floral patterns. For classic and neoclassical design, round or semicircular models with a carved wooden back, legs and armrests or products decorated with a carriage screed are especially suitable.

The photo shows a white sofa equipped with storage drawers in a Scandinavian-style children's interior.

Luxurious and elaborate baroque is characterized by antique models that have a more elegant shape, which may have tapestry upholstery, carved edging, a figured headboard or curved armrests. In an interior designed in an oriental style, a sofa would be appropriate, both in bright and rich colors and in muted neutral shades, covered with silk, brocade or velvet fabric with various gold ornaments. Loft rooms are often decorated with wooden structures that have a slightly rough appearance; modern design uses products with a laconic and simple appearance, with practical and stylish leather or fabric upholstery.

Secrets of saving when purchasing

When your wallet cannot boast of thickness and a large number of crisp bills, and new furniture is so needed, you have to look for what you can save on. Not at the expense of quality, of course – just not that. Especially if you are supposed to sleep on the ottoman and sofa every night. However, this is why they are usually purchased (with rare exceptions).

So, let's start saving banknotes, of which there are few. For this:

  • We select a budget upholstery option - it often significantly affects the final cost of the model. To do this, you can consult with the manager.
  • Instead of a mattress with independent springs (the most expensive option), we use polyurethane foam filling. The main thing is that it is of high quality, dense enough and not too thin.
  • We go shopping not to a city store, but to a virtual one. Moreover, it would be nice if it came from the manufacturing factory.
  • It is not necessary to buy an ottoman or sofa from a well-known brand - it is for the name that there is often a premium.
  • We choose an inexpensive lifting mechanism - for example, a spring type. Or simply on hinges, unless, of course, the base and mattress are too heavy.

Are you dreaming of a stylish sofa? Then choose wisely, and how to do this, see the following video:

How to assemble at home?

The process of making a sofa with your own hands is quite simple:

  1. Assembly begins with the frame.
    For this, a rectangular frame is made from boards. The frame is secured with nails and furniture glue. For greater strength of the product, triangular-shaped wooden fasteners are inserted into the corners .

  2. The legs are cut out and attached to the frame with large cross-section bolts.
  3. Next, a frame is constructed from plywood.
  4. Springs are attached to the prepared frame (on the seat and back). For this, screws and special clamps are used.
  5. Thick fabric is placed on top of the springs and secured with a furniture stapler. To make the product softer, it is recommended to place batting under the fabric.
  6. Foam rubber is spread on top, at least 3 cm thick. Don’t forget to attach the filler to the armrests as well.

  7. Next we move on to the side parts and legs.
    Since this is the only part of the furniture that will not be hidden under the fabric, the wood is carefully cleaned, stained and painted or varnished. Even if you decide to paint the product, it is recommended to apply two layers of clear varnish on top . This will make the furniture more resistant to negative factors.

  8. Now you can start working on the upholstery materials. The fabric is neatly spread on a flat surface. We begin to secure the material from the bottom of the sofa, more precisely, to the frame. The upholstery is fixed with a stapler.
  9. To fasten the material on internal curves, it is better to use decorative nails with heads made of fabric or leather.

Tip : To prevent the springs from moving out during use of the furniture, it is recommended to tie them crosswise with twine.

Finishing and decoration

As for finishing, this includes sanding the lumber, painting and varnishing it. This increases the service life of the furniture item and gives it an aesthetic appearance. You can sew small colorful pillows on the sofa as decoration .

Tip : You can place a coffee or glass table next to the sofa. An ottoman can be a good addition to it.
