When choosing upholstered furniture, everyone strives for maximum comfort. An excellent option that can provide complete relaxation is a recliner chair that can be adjusted to different positions. This type of furniture got its name from the English word “recline”, which means “to recline”, “to be in a reclining position”. Modern models have electronic control and many useful functions, such as heating, massage, and an audio system.
Design features
Initially, the model was intended for use by airplane pilots and astronauts, since during long-distance flights they could not move or stand up normally.
The design of the advertiser made it possible to combine the functions of work and rest. It looks like a soft chair that can take different positions and provide comfort to the body for a long time.
A modern electric recliner is able to change position smoothly and without jerking. The comfortable soft footrest extends forward and rises to the desired height.
The scope of use has become much wider: you can see such a chair in the interior of an office, beauty salon or living space.
Design features of recliner sofas
The mechanism of a sofa recliner consists of several modules similar to the mechanisms of armchairs. They are fastened together independently, thanks to this, each place on such a sofa changes independently of the others.
The backrests of almost all models recline in the same way: there is a reclining position (convenient for watching movies) and a lying position (the backrest and seat are at the same level). But the footrest can extend in different ways. If this is a recliner sofa with a place to sleep, then the footrest serves as a continuation of the bed and should take on a larger load. Due to this, in models of this type, its mechanism is more massive and the footrest itself is larger and wider in thickness. And if in front of us is not a sofa bed recliner, but ordinary furniture for sitting, then a footrest will be very easy.
Device and basic provisions
The mechanism of a chair can be simple or complex. The idle time is activated by a lever or by pressing on the backrest. A complex device is more convenient to use, has more functions and operates using an electric drive.
Whatever the control option, the recliner chair can take several specific positions.
Basic backrest tilt options
Standard. This is a working position with an angle not exceeding 100° and the footrest retracted. More complex models make it possible to adjust the headrest.

TV position. Convenient transformation for positioning in front of the TV, in which the backrest is slightly reclined and the footrest is slightly raised. In this position, watching TV shows and movies will be much more comfortable.
Relax. This option involves a raised seat and a maximally reclined backrest. The chair takes the shape of a chaise lounge and relieves stress from the spine, providing the body with a comfortable position.
Some advertiser models are equipped with drink coasters and an audio system.
Where to install the sofa recliner and how to use it?
The main task that their inventors set for “reclining sofas” was rest and relaxation. Thanks to this, such a sofa must be placed where you plan to spend your vacation, alone or in company. In most cases, it is placed in the home theater area. The key property of such furniture is that you can sit on it for a couple of hours and not feel unpleasant feelings in your body, but, on the contrary, relax and unwind.
An excellent location option is in an individual room, in a semicircle near the compositional center (TV, fireplace). It is not advisable to install it in a walk-through room, because then there will be no relaxation atmosphere.
Sofas with recliners are quite compact (except for large modular ones). You can sneak them not only into a cottage, but also into an apartment in the city.
Despite the difficulty of the mechanism, using the advertiser is quite simple. It can be easily mastered by both a person of advanced age and a person with limited capabilities. Simply press the remote control button until your legs and back are in a comfortable position (or, if it is a mechanical sofa recliner, use the lever).
Ways to control the chair
When choosing a chair, you should familiarize yourself with the options for transformation mechanisms. There are several ways to change positions and connect additional functions:
- using a lever;
- pressing the backrest or footrest;
- using the control panel;
- touching the touchpad.
Pressing by hand and using a lever are considered mechanical methods of influence. Automated chairs take different positions thanks to an electric motor controlled by a remote control or touch panel. The last two options are much more convenient, but higher in price.
What is
The peculiarity of this chair is the ability to adjust the backrest and footrest in different planes. If necessary, the footrest can be completely retracted. Recliners differ in materials of manufacture, transformation mechanisms, types of control and a number of other features, but the main functions - to ensure maximum relaxation, reduce tension in the musculoskeletal system and muscle corset - are preserved in each model. This is also ensured by the fact that the seat and backrest are made taking into account the anatomical features of the body. The latter can be adjusted by changing the angle of inclination.
The advantages include the stability of the structure - despite the moving and adjustable parts, the chairs are reliable, there is no risk that they will tip over. The recliner mechanism and its other parts rarely break down, serve for a long time, and allow you to comfortably spend time at home or relax at work - often such models of upholstered furniture are installed in staff rest rooms. The filler is so soft that some people even fall asleep while sitting without experiencing any muscle discomfort after sleep.
The word “recliner” refers to both the mechanism for transforming the chair and a type of upholstered furniture.
Mechanical chairs
Models controlled by a lever are considered the cheapest and simplest.

Their main disadvantages are the need for physical effort, jerking when changing positions, and a small number of functions. In order for the chair to change position, you need to press the lever located below.
Mechanical models also include chairs controlled by hand pressing. The effort required when changing positions will be less than with a lever, and the cost will be higher.
Power seats
Models that change position using an electric motor are controlled in three ways:
- wired;
- wireless;
- sensory.
The wired method involves connecting the device to an outlet using wires and operating it with a hand-held remote control. The two-meter wire does not limit the actions of the chair.
Battery-powered remotes give you more space. Advertisers with similar controls are more advanced, but their price is higher.

Classic Chesterfield Chair - Step by Step Guide
The Chesterfield chair is a classic model, the distinctive feature of which is its extraordinary softness and comfort.
In addition, it is distinguished by covering using the carriage tie technique. Traditionally, genuine leather was used to make such chairs, but recently they increasingly prefer high-quality leatherette. Making Chesterfield style sofas and armchairs is not an easy task and requires experience, skill and precision, but the results are worth the time and effort. The Chesterfield chair consists of a hollow frame and has no visible elements made of wood, metal, etc.
So, in order to make a Chesterfield chair with your own hands you will need:
Materials:
— plywood 12-15 mm thick;
- plywood 20-30 mm thick; - thin plywood about 5 mm thick; - board 20-25 mm thick; — bars with a cross section of 40 x 40 mm; — Fiberboard or thick cardboard for making patterns; - glue; - textile furniture tape or furniture belt; — leatherette for the carriage screed and processing the bottom of the chair; — buttons to match the leatherette for the carriage tie; — furniture foam rubber 50 mm thick; — foam rubber 20 mm thick; — padding polyester or foam rubber 5 mm thick; — furniture metal buttons; - furniture cord with a diameter of 10-12 mm; - furniture edging; — nylon cord for making a carriage tie; - dowel-nail for attaching the facade to the stud; - untreated wooden legs; — a metal rod with a thread for attaching the legs and metal fittings with internal threads; - paint for wooden legs; - durable glossy varnish for legs; - furniture screws. Tools:
- jigsaw;
— a milling machine or a permanently mounted manual milling cutter; — pneumatic furniture stapler; - drill; - screwdriver; - spray gun for glue; — a grinder with a cutting wheel for metal; - sander; - hammer; - scissors, stationery knife; - sewing machine; — a device for covering buttons with leather; - large gypsy needle; - ruler, square, construction tape; - marker. Manufacturing process: Step one: preparing frame parts
Mark the main frame parts on plywood and wooden boards. The author uses pre-prepared fiberboard patterns. Cut out the blanks using a jigsaw. To correct the shape, the author uses a homemade milling machine. You can partially use a sander to straighten the edges. Sand the figured elements by hand.
Step two: assembling the chair frame
The frame parts are connected using glue and furniture screws. Pre-drill holes in the fastening points on natural wood parts to prevent the wood from cracking.
Assemble the lower trim and secure the parts of the formers. Also secure the front frame of the chair using wooden blocks.
Prepare the piping of the second tier by first installing corner pieces made of thick plywood. Using the same principle, assemble and secure the upper frame of the chair.
Step three: covering the frame with plywood and furniture tape
Sand the chair frame thoroughly, paying special attention to the edges of the plywood parts.
To cover the frame, the author uses thin plywood no more than 5 mm thick. It bends easily, repeating the smooth shapes of the frame. The casing is attached to the body with metal brackets, and the author used glue to ensure the strength of the connection. In places where this is permissible and where there are no other options, the author covered it with textile furniture tape.
Mark the holes for the carriage coupler and drill them using a drill. Step four: preparing the foam base
To add volume, the author glued a strip of foam rubber on the outside of the back and along its top. Cover the top tier of the panels and the back with solid pieces of foam rubber, bending them inward.
Step five: making the carriage tie
Prepare the buttons for the carriage tie. The author uses buttons on the stem of his own production, which he made using a special mechanical device.
Make a carriage tie on the side parts of the backrest and only after that tighten the center of the backrest. The covering is carried out from separate sections of leatherette without preliminary stitching of the parts.
The outer corners of the backrest are trimmed with shaped pieces sewn from two elements of leatherette. Perform a carriage tie on the front of the chair. Secure the leatherette with staples, trim off the excess. Also decorate the bottom of the back, having previously laid the folds.Step six: making and installing the seat base
Prepare a furniture edging, as well as a seat base made of plywood board and block. Sew a piece of thick raincoat fabric and leatherette to finish the base.
Cover the base of the chair and secure the furniture edging. Place the seat base on the chair frame, securing it with furniture screws.
Step seven: covering the frame with leatherette
Cover the outer side of the chair body with leatherette, securing the material at the base of the seats face to face. Secure the joints of the covering parts with metal buttons. Using the same principle, treat the bottom of the chair.
Step eight: decorating the facade of the chair
Fix the furniture edging on the frames. Fasten the leatherette strip, forming folds around the perimeter. Glue the facade with a strip of foam rubber and secure the leatherette, making folds.
Drill the plywood base of the facades and install dowel-nails in the holes. Glue a layer of thin foam rubber or synthetic padding onto the blanks and cover them with leatherette. Install the façade elements on dowel nails.
Step nine: preparing and installing the legs
Sand the finished wooden legs and paint them with spray paint. Let the paint dry and apply a coat of glossy, permanent varnish.
Drill holes in the legs and glue a threaded metal rod, pre-cut into pieces of the desired length. Install the legs onto the chair body.
All that remains is to place the cushion on the seat - and the Chesterfield chair is ready!

Additional comfort options
Recliner chairs have many options to increase comfort.
Luxury models are capable of rotating and rocking, performing several types of massage and heating the seat, playing relaxing music and storing selected programs in memory.
The production of multifunctional furniture is not limited to armchairs. The consumer market also offers recliner sofas that can transform into a comfortable bed.
Office chairs have a strict and simple design. They create all the conditions for comfortable and fulfilling work: they relieve stress, heat the seat, and cool drinks.
Preparatory stage
Before starting work on assembling a chair at home, you need to decide on the basic parameters of the future product. You should start with the appearance. In accordance with the style of the room where the upholstered furniture will be installed, a suitable model is selected.
It is advisable to study the range of finished products in exhibition halls or look at photos in catalogs. In the first case, you can clearly see and touch the planned model, but the search will take some time. In the second case, the time spent will be minimal, but the final appearance may differ significantly from the desired one.
Having studied the range of chairs and decided on the model, you can begin preparatory work. First, you should measure the place where you plan to put the furniture and calculate the dimensions. To avoid mistakes in fitting parts and not to forget anything, competent drawings and diagrams are drawn up.
The generally accepted ergonomic seat height is approximately 45 cm, its width and depth vary from 40 to 45 cm. The height of the backrest from the floor should be about 1 meter. For comfortable sitting, a slope of 3 cm is made from the edge to the back.
To make a drawing of a chair on a sheet of graph paper or graph paper, a completely finished model is initially drawn, after which the following are depicted separately:
- back;
- side detail;
- seat;
- armrests.
When schematic modeling, it is necessary to take into account the thickness of the material from which the chair will be made . Synthetic and natural fabrics have different parameters, which can affect the final collection of parts. After completing the drawing, it is advisable to draw part templates on cardboard and cut them out. This will make it possible to try on life-size dimensions and project the necessary elements on the material.
Before purchasing, a full calculation of the quantity of required materials must be carried out. This is done in order to avoid going to the store again and purchasing unnecessary parts.
For components, you can go to the construction market or a specialized store. You can also order materials for delivery, but in this case it will not be possible to visually evaluate their appearance and quality.
Materials and design
Recliner chairs cannot be classified as budget furniture options. They are considered an expensive luxury product. The best materials are used for their manufacture.
The base of the structure is made of solid hardwood (birch, alder) or high quality steel.
Office samples are equipped with a cross-shaped or round leg, sometimes supplemented with wheels.
Recliners for living spaces have the appearance of classic upholstered furniture. Armchairs of this type vary in shape and finishing options.
The filling is padding polyester or Sorel, and the upholstery is leather or modern textiles of the highest quality: microfiber, jacquard and velor fabrics, flock and self-cleaning “smart” textiles.
Wide selection at IKEA
The store's website contains photos of a recliner chair that meets the most demanding tastes.
IKEA chairs trimmed with textiles or genuine leather look decent and are well suited for the interior of a living room, study or office.
The high cost of the models is compensated by the best consumer qualities, allowing them to be used for comfortable work and good rest.
