It is rare to find sliding wardrobes in the dining area in stylish kitchens, and vice versa, they imply the use of furniture for different purposes. These products look original and beautiful in the workspace; they are spacious and attractive in appearance. To choose a cabinet with sliding doors for the kitchen, you need to understand the types of models and placement rules.

Types of bedroom wardrobes

When starting to purchase a suitable model, you need to decide on the place where the cabinet will be installed, its size, and the type of door opening. Depending on the purpose of the wardrobe and the method of placement in the room, there are several varieties.

Built-in

The frame of the structure is attached to the wall, floor and ceiling, which replace the sides, bottom and top of the cabinet. This model is successfully mounted in a niche or corner of the room. This solution helps to save space in the bedroom and hide possible finishing defects. The full-wall length wardrobe is distinguished by its capacity.

The only negative is the inability to move, lift or rearrange the cabinet. This type of furniture is installed “to last forever,” so you need to think a hundred times before deciding on the location of the built-in wardrobe in the bedroom.

Modular

The most economical and familiar type for Russians. Consists of one housing or a set of modules. Such a wardrobe is often complemented with such items as:

  • narrow sections - pencil cases;
  • TV stands;
  • shelves;
  • chests of drawers for linen;
  • dressing table;
  • mezzanine.

The modules are manufactured in the same design as the cabinet. The result is a functional furniture composition in a single style. It looks more cumbersome than built-in structures, but costs less.

This option is optimal for a bedroom-living room, when it is necessary to place not only clothes inside, but also a book section, equipment, dishes, and decorative elements.

Bedroom set

These cabinets are installed on the sides of the bed and are often sold as a single bedroom furniture set. Bed linen, home knitwear, bath towels and other textiles are stored in the wardrobe. The bedside tables contain items that are required during rest - books, a lamp, glasses and other small things.

Two wardrobes installed on both sides of the sleeping bed can be connected by a narrow mezzanine. It is important to ensure that the fastening is secure so that the structure does not fall onto the bed.

Dressing rooms

Designed exclusively for storing clothes and shoes, they take up a lot of space in the room, the height is from floor to ceiling. Some dressing rooms are comparable in size to a pantry. Inside the closet there are all kinds of devices for neatly placing things - hangers, shelves, organizers, drawers, holders for ties and belts.

The filling is thought out for small things, which makes the wardrobe extremely spacious and makes it easier to find the right thing.

Standard layout of kitchen furniture

  • the upper part of the kitchen cabinets acts as a cutting tabletop and a support for the sink - this is the so-called “modular layout”;
  • two-level arrangement of cabinets - in this case, dishes (except cast iron) are placed on the upper tier, and rarely used items can be stored on the cabinets themselves;

Read: Best kitchen flooring options

You can often find sets where the vertical side edge of the outer cabinet is beveled - this is done in order to leave the entrance to the room free. The doors of such furniture, as a rule, are either sliding or hinged.

In order to ensure the comfort and functionality of the kitchen, you can use one of the classic layouts of the kitchen set:

  • linear. Wardrobes and bedside tables are installed close to each other in one line;
  • corner To place the set, two walls of the room are used at once - the sink is located in the corner;
  • P - shaped. Suitable only for kitchens with large areas.

Cabinet shapes

Modern furniture manufacturers offer consumers a variety of wardrobe models that differ in size, height, and location.

Popular cabinet shapes:

  • Rectangular (linear). The classic version is usually located along the wall. Can be supplemented with an attached open bookcase, dressing table and other modules.

  • Radius cabinet. Suitable for a spacious bedroom, it has a round shape and is often complemented by sliding doors. The design matches the relaxing ambiance of the room.
  • Angular. Made in the shape of the letter P (for bedrooms with a large area) or L (suitable for placement in a small room), as well as in the shape of a trapezoid for non-standard layouts. The cabinet can be built-in or free-standing, and consist of several cabinet modules.

Large wardrobes in size

Large dressing rooms are installed in spacious rooms. Usually this is a living room or bedroom. The limit parameters are:

  • depth – 90 cm;
  • height – 3 m;
  • width – no more than 5 m.

When making a custom-made dressing room, the sketch plays a big role. You need to carefully measure the room, think about the contents and indicate the number and type of things. Based on your project, craftsmen will make furniture.

Design

The appearance of the wardrobe is determined by the design of the doors and fittings. For small bedrooms, light shades are relevant, visually expanding the space.

Expert opinion

Olga Kovalenko

Since 2010 I have been engaged in interior design and architectural design.

If there are colorful textiles and wallpaper, the closet should be laconic, in a minimalist style, so as not to visually overload the space. If this piece of furniture serves as an accent in an overall ascetic environment, then it can be decorated with sandblasting or color printing.

If the room is dark or small, you should choose doors with mirrors. In a room located on the sunny side, on the contrary, it is recommended to use matte surfaces and install the cabinet near the window.

Minimum dimensions for a wardrobe

A small cabinet will fit well in a small room, since the standard design will take up most of the space. The minimum parameters are:

  • width - 1 m;
  • doors - 45 cm;
  • The depth of the dressing room in the hallway or narrow corridor is 35 cm.

Color

When choosing a cabinet, you should pay attention to the color of the body and facades. If the furniture is built-in, only the doors provide color, and the internal parts hidden from view can be of any color.

For the bedroom, wardrobe wardrobes with facades in calm pastel colors and wood shades on the sides are preferred.

In order to lighten the space and add “airiness” to the bedroom, it is worth installing a white wardrobe with a glossy surface on the doors. If the furnishings in the room are made in a modern style, bright rich shades are possible: blue, pink, purple and others.

Basic rules for choosing cabinets

When choosing kitchen cabinets, you must follow certain rules to increase their functionality. These include the following characteristics.

Compactness

It is better not to use bulky drawers in the kitchen, and especially in a small room.

It is important to make the most efficient use of the usable area for greater comfort and convenience.

A pencil case will be more useful than large elaborate drawers.

It's also important to make use of corners by choosing space-saving corner cabinets.

It is worth using the space in height.

If you need a lot of storage space, you can hang wall cabinets right up to the ceiling.

The items that are used the least should be placed on the top shelves.

Capacity

Of course, the more cabinets, the more space for storing kitchen utensils. However, even in a small area you can intelligently distribute the area.

Organizers are great options for saving space.

In addition, with their help it is easy to reach the most distant objects.

Drawers and dividers for dishes are also good helpers.

If the interior style allows, then in order to save space in the drawers, you can use rails on which many kitchen utensils are hung. In addition, this will allow them to always be at hand.

Easy to clean

Since there are temperature changes in the kitchen, and furniture may come into frequent contact with water and grease, it is recommended to choose a material with a protective coating that is easy to clean.

It is better not to use intricate patterns on the handles, since they are more difficult to wash.

Strength

The durability of a kitchen set directly depends on the material from which it is made.

Wood is definitely the most durable material, but its price is high.

MDF is a fairly high-quality and more budget-friendly option.

Chipboard is considered the cheapest and at the same time least durable, but this material is most widely used precisely because of its low price.

In addition to the material, strength is also determined by the layers of paint that cover the furniture. It is desirable that there be at least eight of them.

Single style

Of course, it won’t do without a design solution. All cabinets must correspond to the same style, be made in the same color scheme, suitable for the interior as a whole.

In addition, all cabinet details, including handles, the presence of patterns, and the clarity of lines should also have the same direction.

Thus, cabinets are part of the set and play a huge role in the kitchen.

They are necessary for storing all kinds of utensils, dishes, food, equipment and more.

Therefore, in order to fit everything you need, it is important to think through all the details and try to choose the most functional and spacious furniture.

To do this, you need to remember about the possible types of kitchen cabinets and choose from them those that will be most relevant for a particular room.

In addition, do not forget that aesthetic appearance also matters, and it is necessary to adhere to the general style.

Stylistics

Depending on the size, general appearance, design of the facades, the cabinet may correspond to one or another style in the interior.

Several variants:

  • Classic. The wardrobe is made of valuable wood, looks massive and bulky, and is expensive. It has strong legs and cornices on top. The doors are hinged, decorated with patina, carvings, and forged handles with a rich pattern.
  • Minimalism. Such cabinets are also suitable for a bedroom in a high-tech or loft style. They have strict forms and discreet design. Facades are made of plastic, glass, aluminum, chipboard.
  • French Provence. The cabinet can be decorated with a thematic pattern. The color is light - from white to blue and gray. The doors can be made of glass or replaced with a rustic curtain. The surfaces are artificially aged, the fittings seem to be worn out.

  • Ethnic. The designs are original. Made from rough wood, rattan or artificial materials that imitate natural ones.

Types of Kitchen Cabinets

There are classifications:

  • according to manufacturing materials (wood, plastic, MDF, chipboard);
  • style (modern, retro, Provence);
  • installation methods (wall, floor) and others.

The following types of cabinets are usually used for the kitchen:

  • corner;
  • narrow pencil cases;

  • wall;

  • with open shelves;
  • buffets;

  • sideboards;
  • columns.

Material

A prestigious and expensive cabinet is usually made of wood. However, in addition to the high price, it has other disadvantages - over time, the structure may become deformed, and problems may arise with opening and closing doors.

Wooden furniture is not suitable for rooms with high humidity. A popular and economical material for making a cabinet frame is laminated chipboard.

When choosing a wardrobe, you should pay attention to the formaldehyde content in the particle board. It can be: E0, E1, E2. The lower the number, the less the amount of toxic substance in the glue, the safer the material. E2 class chipboard is not allowed for production in the Russian Federation, according to GOST.

The edge deserves no less attention. It happens:

  • PVC (PVC) - used most often, it is practical;
  • melamine

This tape is the color of the chipboard, which is glued to the cut site. The ends of the slab must be securely hidden. The edge thickness can be 0.4-2 mm. The higher this indicator, the more reliably the edges are protected. For actively used surfaces, it is worth choosing a thicker edge (1-2 mm), and for inconspicuous or hidden from the eyes 0.4 mm is suitable.

The particle board itself can be coated with:

  • laminate;
  • acrylic film;
  • plastic;
  • veneer

It is important that the decorative coating fits securely to the chipboard and does not peel off or bubble.

The thickness of the cabinet sides also matters. It can be 16, 18 and 25 mm. The higher the indicator, the more reliable and durable the structure.

The back walls are invisible, but the material also matters. The cheapest is plywood, which is nailed onto furniture nails. Over time, it may come off, allowing dust to enter the gap. To eliminate the defect, you will need to move the cabinet, which is not always possible.

A more practical solution is a back wall made of fiberboard, which is inserted into grooves and will not fall out in the future. The most reliable option is to cover the back of the cabinet with the same chipboard from which the frame is made.

Calculation of door sizes

The dimensions of the wardrobe doors are determined by the internal dimensions of the opening. That is, if the total width of our cabinet (box dimensions) is 1600 mm, then the installation size for the sliding system will be 1600-16-16=1568 (16 mm is the thickness of the chipboard walls). And, accordingly, if the total height is 2500 mm, then the size of the sliding system will be 2500-100-16-16 = 2368 mm. Here 16 mm is the thickness of the chipboard bottom and roof and 100 mm is the height of the base).

Sliding wardrobe doors: quantity and width

Here you will need to take into account both the overall width of the cabinet and its contents.

Firstly, when calculating the width of a wardrobe door, a limiting factor applies. The door width should be less than 1/2 and more than 1/4 of the height of the cabinet. The optimal door width is from 600 to 900 mm.

With a height of under 2500 mm, the width of the sliding system door should not be less than 700 mm, otherwise it will be very narrow and long, which can lead to it being skewed when opening. The wider the support points (lower rollers), the more stable the sash will be. This will also provide the door with a smoother ride. In order not to get a heavy and uncomfortable door, you should not make it very wide, maximum 1000-1100 mm.

Secondly, the number of doors will be directly affected by its contents, namely drawers and other similar mechanisms. You need to provide easy access to them so that the drawers can be pulled out easily and without obstacles and do not catch on anything.

Therefore, the compartment where the drawers are located is usually made a little narrower compared to the other sections. Sections with sliding mechanisms are best placed not in the center, but on opposite sides of the wardrobe, i.e. to the side walls. This way you will avoid the unpleasant situation of opening a drawer, which, if positioned incorrectly, will rest against the doors of the closet.

Size

Considering that bedrooms usually have modest dimensions and are intended for relaxation, most often a compact closet is installed here. The main role in the furniture composition is given to the bed.

Designers recommend choosing wardrobe models that extend upward (to the ceiling) and not to the sides for storing things. It is worth considering the option of installing a narrow cabinet-case of one or two sections in the bedroom when the room is small. These models are compact, occupying only about 0.5-1 m in width.

If there is no other place in the apartment to place household items, books, and a wardrobe, then for the bedroom it is worth purchasing a large wall with a wardrobe, open and glass-covered shelves.

Expert opinion

Olga Kovalenko

Since 2010 I have been engaged in interior design and architectural design.

Legs are installed at the bottom of modular furniture. It's good if they are adjustable.

Despite the fact that many beautiful models are made to order according to individual sizes, there are generally accepted standards for the depth of the wardrobe. Narrow designs - 45 cm, more convenient to use - 60. The height of factory products can be 1.8-2.4 m.

Common cabinet sizes

The selection of new furniture begins with determining the dimensions. You need to take into account the width and height of the room where the furniture will be placed. Every centimeter matters. The width depends on additional pieces of furniture. If there will be chests of drawers or cabinets in the room, the cabinet should not be close to them. It is recommended to make detailed measurements before ordering furniture.

The maximum height is limited by the ceiling, but the doors should not be higher than 2.5 meters. If the cabinet is higher, the rest of the cabinet remains open. Making doors higher than 2.5 meters is unsafe. They lose stability and can jump off the rollers. Separate swing doors can be installed on the mezzanine. If the room has a suspended ceiling, you need to maintain at least a small distance between the ceiling and the cabinet.

Number and types of doors

The number of cabinet opening systems depends on the size and design of the product. Accordingly, the longer it is, the greater the number of opening structures - one, two, three doors, etc. On average, a door is provided for 0.5-0.7 m.

As a rule, each leaf corresponds to the size of the internal section divided by a partition. There are exceptions in wardrobes, because sliding facades are relevant for “endless” wardrobes and built-in storage systems.

Types of cabinet doors:

  • Swing. Economical and practical option. The main thing that needs to be provided is the presence of free space near the cabinet so that nothing interferes with opening and access.

  • Sliding. The so-called coupes are increasingly in demand among modern consumers. They are more expensive than hinged ones, but have a stylish design and provide easy access to the contents - just move the door to the side.
  • Harmonic. It is used quite rarely, often in dressing rooms. The facade consists of several vertical segments that fold like a fan when opening a large cabinet.

Standard sliding wardrobes

There are no exact standards for wardrobe systems. There are only general recommendations that need to be followed when implementing the project:

  • door height up to 2.5 m;
  • width up to 3 m;
  • depth: 30 cm – 60 cm.

Internal dimensions depend on external dimensions and filling. The width of open shelves should not exceed 1 m, and the distance between shelves should be no more than 30 cm.

The standard length depends on the area of the room. Large wardrobes are recommended to be placed in the bedroom, living room or hallway.

The wardrobe with dimensions and photos is in the catalogue. These are recommended, general settings. To order, you can make a model of any size, shape, filling. Each manufacturer has its own ideas about standards.

Types of door mechanisms

Depending on the type of facades used, the necessary fittings are selected for them.

Options:

  • On rollerskates. This mechanism is used in sliding and sliding wardrobes and allows the doors to slide right and left along special strips at the top and bottom of the structure.

  • On hinges. They can be classic or with closers (then the door closes on its own). Installed on hinged cabinet doors. The more massive and wider the facade, the larger and more powerful the hinges are required.
  • On gas lifts. Pneumatic lifts are popular on mezzanines, they open from bottom to top, and are often equipped with closers.

Ease of use largely depends on the quality of the fittings. Expensive products from European brands last much longer and work better than Chinese products. If the opening mechanisms are installed in good faith, then the gap width between the doors does not exceed 2-3 mm.

Non-standard dimensions

Any design whose dimensions differ from the standard ones is considered non-standard. In order for the product to fit harmoniously into the room and not cause inconvenience during operation, you need to draw up a competent diagram. The best option in this case is to call a specialist to your home, who, based on the expected location and taking into account the wishes of the owners, will calculate the ideal design parameters. This tactic minimizes the likelihood of errors, which is very important, since the production of custom-made furniture is always associated with high costs.

How to properly assemble a wardrobe with your own hands, step-by-step tips

The non-standard category includes, for example, furniture with a depth of less than 45 cm and more than 50 cm. The use of special materials is not required for its manufacture. When creating a model of a future cabinet of a non-standard size, it is recommended to be guided by the following rules:

  • the width of the doors should not exceed 1 m, otherwise the roller system will have to withstand increased load, which will cause rapid breakdown;
  • if the depth of the structure does not exceed 40 cm, and the width of the doors is about 100 cm, it is recommended to equip the attribute with an additional pair of rollers.

Purpose of rollers for sliding wardrobes, methods of installing elements

Facade decoration

The presentable appearance of the cabinet directly depends on the finish of the doors. Most often used for the manufacture of facades:

  • chipboard;
  • MDF;
  • mirrors;
  • glass;
  • aluminum profile.

Sliding wardrobes have the greatest number of options for decorating facades, since they represent a single structure. But you can also create an unusual design on swing doors.

For decorative door decoration use:

  • mirror fragments;
  • stained glass;
  • gloss;
  • photo printing;
  • multi-colored acrylic films;
  • bamboo;
  • sandblasting;
  • 3D images and others.

Facades - structures and finishing materials

The fronts of wardrobes vary in material, construction and design. Based on the type of construction, facades are divided into two main types:

  • solid - made from one piece;
  • frame - consist of several structural elements.

Frame facades are panels made of chipboard, MDF or wood, framed with a frame. The frame can be made of the same materials as the paneled part, or be made of a steel profile.

When choosing a module for clothing, you should pay attention not only to the design features of the front part, but also to the covering material of the base of the facade. A wide range of materials are used for finishing sashes, the most widely used are:

  • enamels. Painted facades are characterized by high wear resistance; a layer of enamel protects the base from moisture. The painted canvas is easy to clean;
  • veneer. The coating not only improves the wear-resistant qualities of the furniture, but also gives the facade a noble appearance. The advantages of veneered bases include repairability; in case of mechanical damage, the material can be restored;
  • PVC film. Film cladding is an affordable option for facade finishing. A layer of PVC film protects the facade from the negative effects of external factors - moisture, ultraviolet radiation. PVC film minimizes the possibility of mechanical damage to the front side of the cabinet;
  • plastic. A thin layer of plastic provides protection from mechanical damage, sunlight and moisture. Depending on the type of plastic used, a wide variety of textures can be achieved. Smooth polystyrene films form a matte or glossy surface. Structural plastics, which are thermally formed during the production process, convey the original texture of simulated materials - leather, relief plaster, wood, etc.;
  • bamboo cloth. Bamboo is an environmentally friendly natural material. The advantages of facades finished with bamboo fabric are their unique texture, durability, and resistance to temperature changes and moisture.

Internal filling

The main task of a closet in the bedroom is storage, which is why it is so important to think about the placement of partitions and sections. In a well-equipped wardrobe, clothes do not wrinkle, although they are folded compactly. Other things are also stored there - underwear, shoes, accessories.

For the functional internal filling of the cabinet, many devices are used:

  • drawers;
  • shelves;
  • boxes;
  • separators;
  • baskets;
  • hangers for clothes;
  • clips for trousers and skirts;
  • tie makers;
  • devices for storing belts;
  • baskets for shoes and linen, etc.

It is worth taking care of the interior lighting, especially if the closet is deep or replaces a dressing room.

Open cabinets

Modern designers increasingly prefer open furniture. Open cabinets with shelves are wooden, plastic or iron structures without doors, with internal or side sections (for storing clothes and household items). Storing things on open shelves is very convenient - everything you need is in sight and at hand. There is no need to sort through numerous drawers to find the item you need.

Functional and practical cabinets give the room “airiness” and lightness.

Modern models 2020

The bedroom is an intimate room, where household members relax and recover after a hard day. It is important that the color, style, and model of the cabinet complement the overall interior, giving it even more elegance and comfort.

When choosing a suitable wardrobe for your bedroom, it is important to pay attention to its spaciousness, functionality and aesthetic appearance. It is desirable that the furniture in the room be made in the same color and style, all interior items are harmoniously combined with each other.

Choosing an open wardrobe system (wardrobes without doors)

A wardrobe without doors is a modern trend in stylish interior design. This type of dressing room involves the use of curtains, curtains or blinds, which are used instead of traditional sliding or swing doors. Open wardrobes are great for studio apartments where there is free zoning of space. You can equip a dressing room behind a curtain in the hallway or bedroom, where there is no space to make a separate wardrobe or put a large wardrobe.
