Internal shutters (shutters) - high fashion in window decoration

Designs and features

The people of England who came up with the proverb about a fortified house had no idea that there was a Russian way of protecting window openings. Powerful shutters, which cut off access to lovers of other people's property, turn the building into an impregnable bastion. Decorative shutters are made of metal, wood, metal-plastic (the material is the undisputed leader in the sales of door and window systems). Metal-plastic, unlike wood, is resistant to atmospheric influences, but is hardly distinguishable in appearance.

There are several designs:

  • folding ones serve as protection for large window openings. Consist of several doors that rotate on hinges when closing/opening;
  • single-leaf ones are placed on small windows. On one side of the canvas there is a hinged fastening. They are closed with a lock or locking latches, which are installed on the inside of the sashes;
  • bivalves are the most common. Due to the symmetrical arrangement of the design panels, they are more attractive in appearance than single-leaf ones. Hinged windows are locked from the inside, while fixed windows are locked from the outside;
  • combined (blinds): the rotating mechanism of the slats makes it possible to adjust the light flux without opening the shutters. Two problems are solved: natural lighting, protective function. More often than adjustable designs, there are blinds without rotating plates;
  • roller shutters (roller shutters) are a European invention. In demand by owners of shops, warehouses, and offices. Compactness, reliability, and aesthetics attract the attention of home owners to roller shutters. The disadvantage is the price. It is larger than that of swing options;
  • internal ones are used to decorate the interior, regulate the level of illumination. This is not the most reliable protection of the premises from outside penetration.

Main functions

In first place is the goal of protecting yourself from intruders . In this regard, shutters are more reliable than grilles. If you install it correctly and use high-quality materials, then hacking is much more difficult than sawing off the anchor pins of a window grill. When the shutters are closed, the view of the room is completely blocked. The lattice will not interfere with examining the internal state of the country house. Shutters also protect the glass from being hit by a hard object. If we talk about the efficiency of the grid, it is much lower.

Decorative functions cannot be questioned. They are especially noticeable in wooden structures with carvings. Not everyone can boast of the ability to work with wood, but any home craftsman is able to make spectacular sashes using a board and a jigsaw. You will need a minimum of materials, a little imagination, effort, and the original shutters are ready. Although metal products are not as expressive as wooden ones, when using forged decor they look attractive and aesthetically pleasing.

Energy-saving features cannot be ignored either. The main heat leakage from the house comes through windows and doors. Thanks to closed shutters, heat loss is significantly reduced. The level of energy saving of structures can be increased by insulating the sashes with mineral wool or polystyrene foam.

Windows with Shutters in a futuristic interpretation by Arnau Estudi D'arquitectura

Traditionally, windows with shutters are perceived as a classic element of the facade. But the architectural bureau Arnau estudi d'arquitectura showed that they can be used in high-tech style. Vertically opening double-leaf shutters on panoramic windows became the highlight of the cottage project in Spain.

The architects made the structure a decoration of the building and an important functional element. Let's look at photos of modern rising shutters and the tasks they perform.

Increasing home privacy

This is traditional and one of the main tasks of shutters. Since the house is located on a hill, in the evening and at night the windows are clearly visible from a distance. When the shutters are closed, the privacy of the home is increased. Shutters are also anti-vandal structures. They protect the glass from damage from the outside.

The doors are not translucent, so if the house is located in an area with bright night lighting, it will not interfere with your rest. In a cottage on a hill, the morning rays begin to illuminate the premises quite early. Thanks to the shutters, it will be possible to close out the morning sunlight without massive thick curtains or blinds.

In the presented cottage, light transparent tulle is used in the bedroom. And that's enough. It performs mainly an aesthetic function and gives the home comfort.

Ensuring an optimal microclimate

Windows with shutters in this futuristic house perform several tasks at once to maintain an optimal microclimate in the house. When closed, they create additional protection from wind, cold and heat, reducing heat loss through the window opening. And in the open position, such shutters form canopies over the windows, thereby creating shade, sheltering the rooms from the hot daytime sun. The house seems to “raise its eyelids” and thanks to them remains in the shadows.

The space in front of the windows can be used as a small terrace. When open, the shutters create a small canopy over it. This is a convenient and comfortable solution for those who like to relax in the fresh air, sit near the house with a book or a cup of coffee.

Unique design

The shutters have an unusual futuristic design; they open using guides on the sides. Their shape puts emphasis on the unusual design of the facade and increases the individuality of the house. Due to the fact that the shutters do not open to the side, when open they do not take up space on the side of the window. Therefore, the glazing was able to be done almost right next to each other.

The house itself also has a very unusual architecture. It is a box located on a hill. The panoramic windows offer views of the surrounding natural landscapes and the fortress, located a couple of hundred meters away. Utility rooms and a garage are built under the house and serve as the foundation for the residential part of the building. The entire design corresponds to the futuristic direction - straightforwardness, conciseness, lack of decor and maximum practicality.

Thanks to monolithic technology, it was possible to create a free layout with open space. In the residential part of the house, rooms are allocated for a living room, a kitchen-dining room, and a bedroom - all of them have panoramic glazing and are closed with shutters.

The transforming design makes the house original and spectacular, emphasizing the high-tech style. The shutters are made of natural wood, so the cottage fits harmoniously into its natural surroundings.

Types of metal shutters

Modern metal shutters on windows will reliably protect the openings. Thanks to their versatility, they are rapidly gaining popularity among customers. Single- or double-leaf products made of high-quality steel will shield the room from the attention of passers-by and sunlight, and will emphasize the architectural beauty of the building.

External attachments

Metal shutters, attached to the street side, are installed in loggias, private houses, and dachas when the owners are absent. They are often used in apartments and retail establishments located on the ground floors. Often this is a classic single- or double-leaf swing design with a simple structure: a frame made of square iron pipe 25x40 mm, 2 steel flaps attached to the contour with hinges. As anti-corrosion materials, they are often coated with primer or enamel.

Such shutters were popular in summer cottages in the 90s. The only way to get inside the room is to remove them from the hinges located outward towards the window opening. Since this can only be done with the help of an angle grinder, the number of window break-ins in dacha houses began to decrease during that period. The shutters open wide and are closed with a latch (or sliding mechanism).

Reliable blinds

They are distinguished by a high degree of protection and a wide choice of designs. Shutters-blinds can open, allowing air flow and natural light to pass into the room (when installing blind shutters, this situation is excluded). The lamellas used instead of solid steel sheets are made in such a way that, when closed, there is no possibility of moisture ingress. There are many types of slats; it is better not to choose ones that allow sunlight to enter even when closed: they are easier to break into. Along with the blinds, locks and latches are supplied, which ensure complete security for the room.

There is at the same time a positive and negative aspect of using this type of shutters - they block the possibility of heating the space between the glasses. In summer, when the temperature is high, the room is cool, in autumn it is cold. But thanks to the choice of shutters, you can save on air conditioning the room.

When choosing, it is better to give preference to extruded aluminum structures, which have improved thermal insulation properties. Such products can withstand significant gusts of wind, protecting the room from penetration. Multi-layer anti-corrosion coating ensures the durability of the shutters.

Price issue

The cost directly depends on the thickness of the material , the number of sashes, locks and components, the presence of painting, anti-corrosion coating, and additional installation work. The cheapest metal shutters are blind single-leaf ones. They will cost approximately 3 thousand rubles per m2 (there is no less than this price: regardless of the area covered by the sheet, you pay per square meter). Fixed double-leaf blinds cost about 4 thousand rubles per m2, shutters-blinds - about the same, double-leaf blinds - about 5 thousand rubles.

The calculation takes into account the cost of hinges (about 350 rubles per piece), latches (over 700 rubles), locks (from 650 rubles). The cost of painting depends on the area, the approximate amount is 700 rubles. per m2 (price depends on the coating material). The cost of installation work in most cases is equal to half the cost of all components.

Wooden shutters

Shutters. History, features and varieties.

Today, the history of window shutters goes back several thousand years. They are well known to almost all peoples of the world and over many centuries of their use they have acquired many different forms and features. And today, this wonderful window accessory is experiencing a renaissance and is once again becoming a popular, sought-after and important element of the home.

Story

Window shutters appeared thousands of years ago and came into everyday use long before the advent of window glass. In ancient Greece and Rome, shutters were used to protect homes and their inhabitants from unbearable heat and scorching sun. And in the countries of the East, shutters served not only to protect the room from the heat, but were also the most important element of the architectural identity of the house and an indicator of the social status of its owner.

Shutters reached their greatest popularity in the Middle Ages. During this period, they began to be widely used not only by representatives of the nobility, but also by ordinary townspeople and peasants. Shutters protected the home from cold and bad weather, and until the 19th century they remained the main form of protection of the house from robbery.

In Rus', shutters were also well known and were an integral part of the hut. Shutters were made from solid wood, were monolithic, often carved and brightly painted. They were used mainly to protect the home from wind, cold and, of course, robbers, but they also performed an important aesthetic function.

However, in the twentieth century, shutters began to quickly go out of fashion due to new architectural trends. They were replaced by casement windows, and their functions were taken over by central heating, strip glazing, bars and multi-storey buildings. All this reduced the practical value of the shutters to “no” and they remained almost completely in oblivion for several decades.

But at the turn of the 20th–21st centuries, attitudes towards housing began to change again. People began to strive to revive ancient traditions and invest in architectural, stylistic and decorative solutions for their apartments and houses. Therefore, recently there has been a renewed interest in shutters, and they have gradually come into widespread use, once again becoming a stylish and functional accessory for the home.

Materials

Today, shutters can be ordered and made from almost any material. Most often used for their production:

• natural wood

• plywood

• plastic

• anodized steel

• aluminum

• paper

Despite the numerous advantages of other materials, it is wooden shutters that are particularly durable, reliable and beautiful, not to mention the unique aura of a natural material. In modern carpentry, window shutters typically use wood from pine, oak, larch or exotic woods.

However, in order for wooden shutters to last as long as possible, they must be made from exceptionally high-quality, carefully selected and treated wood. To improve the performance of shutters, as well as extend their service life, professional carpentry workshops treat the wood with special moisture-proof, antiseptic, fire-resistant and other compounds.

Types of shutters

Modern workshops are ready to offer a wide selection of various shutter structures, each of which has unique design and functional features.

First of all, window shutters are divided into:

• External. The traditional and most common type of shutter, usually made of strong materials and used to protect premises from weather conditions and burglary.

• Internal. They are used only as a bright element of interior decor and are usually made of fragile materials (thin timber, plywood, paper).

According to the method of opening, shutters are divided into:

• Swing. Traditional type of shutters.

• Sliding. The most modern and stylish type of shutters, which is perfect for large windows and always gives the shutters a tidy look.

• Folding. They open downwards and usually consist of one leaf. They are rarely used in modern architecture, but are well suited for small windows.

• Lifting. They also consist of one leaf, but open upward and are usually fixed with special stops.

Finally, according to the type of their design, modern shutters are either panel or slatted. The doors of panel shutters are solid wooden panels, or planks or boards assembled into a single panel.

The doors of slatted shutters are a much more complex structure. Slatted shutters consist of a wooden frame with wooden slats fixed into it at an angle of 45 degrees at short distances. Thanks to this design, the shutters remain permeable to air and moderate light, while at the same time protecting the room from direct sunlight. Thanks to this, they provide optimal air access and reliably protect the room from heat or other weather conditions.

And the most modern slatted shutters also provide the opportunity to adjust the level of inclination of the slats, controlling the flow of air and light at your discretion. This type of shutter is an ideal option for country houses, combining all the advantages of traditional shutters and modern blinds.

Accessories

Material and design are not the only criteria for choosing shutters. The fittings are also of decisive importance, ensuring their durability, endurance, ease of use and even appearance.

First of all, shutter fittings must be reliable and durable. Since in most cases shutters are installed outside, it must be resistant to temperature changes and moisture. In this regard, now steel is usually used for the manufacture of shutter fittings, which is additionally treated with an anti-corrosion coating.

A typical set of shutter fittings includes:

• hinges that can be adjusted in height, depth and horizontally (angular, longitudinal, cross);

• hinge supports, which can be plate or threaded;

• opening limiters;

• valves with a safe mechanism;

• locking elements, which must be inaccessible from the outside, strong, silent and consistent with the style of the shutter;

• handles and corner pads;

• shutter holders;

• special mechanisms for opening shutters when the windows are closed, linings against drafts and condensation and other additional elements.

The choice of shutter fittings also depends on the method of installation of the structure. Thus, installation of hinges for shutters can be done directly on the window frame, on the wall, or on a special frame for shutters. Each installation method has its own advantages and requires a special approach to the selection of fittings.

Finally, since the shutter hardware is visible, it must not only match the style of the shutters themselves, but also be visually appealing. And in this regard, nothing compares to the classics, especially the stylish and convenient traditional shutter.

Despite the rapid growth in popularity of window shutters in the last few years, authentic, reliable and durable fittings still remain a rarity in Russia.

The TOX company is the only company in the country that imports and stores first-class Italian-made fittings specifically in order to satisfy the needs of all our customers.

Wooden shutters

Wooden shutters are often installed in a window opening as a purely decorative element. They can provide protection from external attacks, but do not provide the level of protection that metal provides.

Wooden shutters are created from pine beams cut to size, previously completely treated with an antiseptic and antifungal solution. When the solutions have been absorbed, the boards have dried, shields are cut out - protective elements. Then they are strengthened with self-tapping screws, corners on the contour frame with holes made in advance for attaching the structure to the window opening. Before placing the shutters, you need to try on the lock and locking device.

Like metal ones, wooden shutters can be external and internal - according to the installation method, blind and louvered - according to the type of their design. Internal and external are hung on hinges, can be blind double-leaf (the opening is made like swing shutters, they are folded like a book), created like blinds (sliding shutters like a wardrobe, as well as sliding blinds).

How to make it yourself

Not everyone can purchase metal-plastic roller shutters with electric drive. And installing steel or wooden panels on windows is available to those who know how to hold a simple tool in their hands. Simple security shutters are easy to make with your own hands.

Wooden doors

A tongue-and-groove floorboard is suitable for assembling wooden sashes. When using it, it will be possible to do without the difficult joining of shield elements: such work requires carpentry skills. First, the window opening is measured and the dimensions are transferred to the sketch. You should immediately choose the design of the sash hinges.

There are 2 types of hinged hinge:

  • the hinge is attached to the window frame;
  • The end of the rotary assembly is driven into a drilled hole made in the concrete/brick wall.

Having chosen the design of the hinge, they begin to assemble the sashes. Having cut the board according to the dimensions of the sketch, the parts are connected according to the tongue-and-groove pattern. To prevent the boards from moving apart, 2 fixing plates are screwed on top of the assembled sash, one inclined - a jib.

2 bolts and lugs are attached to the linings with screws, securing the locking bolt. Hinges are installed on the reverse side of the sashes. The sashes are placed in the window opening, the hinges are screwed to the frame. It is preferable to place window platbands at the top and bottom. When installed from the frame on the right and left sides, they will interfere with the opening of the sashes.

Iron window protection

A simple option is to create a frame of the doors from a profile pipe measuring 10x20 / 20x40 mm, fastening sheet steel with a thickness of 1.0-1.5 mm. The supporting frame is made from a 50x50 mm corner: it is more convenient to attach it to the window opening with dowels.

After measuring the opening and preparing a sketch, they begin to cut the profile pipe for making frames. The pipe sections are placed on a workbench and secured with clamps. They are connected end-to-end by electric welding. Then the sheet metal is cut, after which it is welded onto the frames. To protect the junction of the sashes, a strip of steel (flashing) should be welded onto one of them.

Having made the doors, they begin to prepare the supporting frame from the corner and install the hinges. After attaching the door leaf to the frame, a steel bolt and an eyelet are welded to the middle edge of the frame, where the bolt will go. It is worth making sure that the doors rotate on the frame without difficulty or distortion and close tightly.

Now the shutters are installed in the window opening. 2 holes are drilled in the side corners of the frame to accommodate dowels. Holes are made in the wall where plastic sleeves are installed.

Window installation

Installation of shutters is simple and can be done quickly. The main thing is to follow the instructions. The method of attaching the circuit depends on the type of shutters:

  • metal products are fixed with bolts and nuts. Holes for bolts are drilled in advance;
  • In wooden structures you can get by with self-tapping screws. Wooden shutters are lighter and do not require the use of strong bolts for fixation.

Care and precision are needed to mount it perfectly level on the window, and a building level will help with this. Fastening points are outlined, installation is carried out, but if voids appear, they are sealed with polyurethane foam and treated with waterproofing material. There is no need to put off such work, you should do it right away.

When the shutters are mounted on the hinges, it is worth paying attention to the quality of the connection by closing the shutters. If everything is done without errors, then they will fit together without difficulty, and there will be no overlap in the center of the structure. The halves are connected, then the latch is pushed in / the lock is closed.

In other words, making your own window shutters is quite possible. But certain skills in construction and installation work will still be required.

Modern Wooden Shutters on Windows – Does it make sense and what is the benefit?

Wooden window shutters are a classic element of a country house that are back in fashion. It would seem that modern double-glazed windows, complete with blinds, roller shutters, and Roman shades, have already relieved private property owners from the need to use external window shutters. Now the window design has become more reliable, while it requires minimal maintenance, and you don’t need to go outside to close it.

But truly stylish, luxury housing is often equipped not with standard metal-plastic double-glazed windows, but with elite wooden and metal systems. Such houses have panoramic glazing. But here the requirements for operation, design and protection of windows are slightly different. Let's look at modern wooden shutters from the photo and see why they are a modern, functional and aesthetic element.

wooden shutters for windows

Home Security

In the past, wooden shutters were mainly used to protect windows from vandalism or thrown stones. Modern country houses are generally well protected from such actions. This is facilitated by security systems, fences, distance from the road, etc.

But if the house has a glazed terrace, panoramic windows located on the side of the functional areas of the yard, swimming pool, recreation area, terrace - there is a risk of breaking or damaging the glass while performing household tasks, active entertainment, or children's games.

wooden shutters and blinds for windows

By closing the shutters on the windows from the courtyard or terrace, you can cut the grass nearby, play football, Frisbee, ride a bike, have a barbecue or a party without the risk of damaging the glazing. The windows will be protected from dirt, dust, smoke, ball hits or other objects. Such protection is especially important with panoramic glazing on the floor - it reaches almost to ground level. In this case, careless actions during games, rest, or work near the house become especially risky and can cause damage to the glass.

wooden shutters for swing windows

Hinged wooden shutters on panoramic windows will also protect them from pets. Washed glass is often not noticed even by people, not to mention dogs and cats, who often crash into such structures while running and break them. Proximity to a forest park also means that there is a risk that a wild animal could get into the yard. By covering your windows with shutters, you will protect the glass from them.

Home privacy

Closed wooden shutters deprive the room of outside views. In this case, the windows do not even need to be equipped with roller shutters, blinds or hanging curtains. This technique is especially relevant for fashionable minimalist, futuristic interiors.

wooden slatted window shutters

If the windows of the house offer a panoramic view of the garden, natural landscape, river, park, the absence of curtains and blinds will have a positive effect on the view characteristics. But at the same time, housing is deprived of privacy. Shutters will help solve the problem.

At the same time, the modern design of these structures helps to emphasize the stylish facade of the house. Using the example, we see that they can be used not only in classic housing, but also in a newfangled cottage or villa.

Thanks to the shutters, you can zone the space. By opening them and the windows on the panoramic terrace with a swimming pool, you will practically combine the living space with an outdoor recreation area. Closed shutters, like a wall, separate the interior and exterior space.

Effectiveness of the facade

Open shutters accentuate the windows in the house. They act as a decorative element and emphasize the status and high cost of real estate. Due to the fact that now wooden shutters are not widely used, they add originality to housing - the same house with and without external shutters for windows looks quite different.

The original design of the shutters will add impressiveness to the house both open and closed. With a large glazing area, shutters can cover almost the entire facade. Due to its modern design, the building looks stylish, expensive and safe.

Now it makes sense to install shutters, if necessary, to protect the glazing of the house from external factors, including dirt, smoke, and impacts. Along with this, they perform an aesthetic function and increase the privacy of the property. Such designs have become less popular in traditional houses, but are increasingly in demand in villas, giving them special sophistication and chic, as well as in cottages with panoramic floor glazing.
