In the bedroom, which has furniture made of oak wood, you feel comfortable and spiritual, the whole atmosphere is conducive to calm and relaxation. The natural origin of the material guarantees the safety of furniture products, and it is also very pleasant that a light aroma emanates from natural wood. Any room will be decorated with a solid oak bed, made in a classic or modern style. Our article will tell you about its advantages, as well as what you need to consider when choosing.

What you need to know about oak - a species of the highest standard

Russian craftsmen have been making oak benches, chests and beds since ancient times. Oak is one of the hard wood species, but not “iron”, which is considered to be rowan or pistachio tree. Oak lumber is well processed and can be decorated in different ways.

Based on films and museum exhibitions, many people have the impression that oak furniture is necessarily bulky and dark brown. However, this is not at all true. The natural tone of the oak cut is light and the fibers on it are arranged in a beautiful pattern. Thanks to the clear pattern, experts will instantly distinguish oak from other trees. Only materials made from bog oak are famous for their deep dark color, the trunks of which were kept in backwaters in former times before being processed. Thus, bog oak is the most valuable type; it has increased strength and an unusual shade.

The surfaces of solid oak furniture, as a rule, are not hidden under a layer of colored paint, since the structure itself looks rich and elegant.

When choosing oak furniture, you need to consider its durability. Most likely, you will have to use it for many years and even when renovating the room, adapt it to the existing furnishings. If you like to completely update your interior every 5-7 years, then there is no point in buying an oak bed.

Solid oak furniture emphasizes the high status and excellent taste of the owners. The shade of light gold with the addition of dark inclusions is the natural tone of oak products.

Hard oak is quite difficult to process. To create a beautiful and durable bed with elegant decor, you need to be an experienced specialist and show skill.

We list the main advantages of solid oak products:

  • The furniture resists rotting well and is resistant to mechanical stress.
  • In terms of service life, oak products last much longer than birch, pine or other cheaper species, not to mention laminated chipboard.
  • Even when heated, the array does not tend to emit harmful substances; on the contrary, the air in the room is purified with the help of useful tanning components.
  • Items made of solid oak have significant weight; such furniture is difficult to accidentally tip over.
  • It is better not to paint the surface of the products, but to tint them; such furniture has a noble and sophisticated look. During operation, the beautiful natural texture becomes visible even more clearly.
  • High-quality oak products serve more than one generation of a family. The classic look of the bed allows you to place it in any bedroom interior. Oak wood has a porous structure; the presence of large vessels makes sanding parts difficult. Oak lumber requires slow drying; if the process is accelerated, cracks may form on the boards.

We also note that small areas are not very suitable for installing massive oak beds.

Let's look at the varieties of oak.

For pedunculate oak, the distribution area is central Russia. On the cut it has a bright pattern of tree rings, the wood has a yellow-brown tone. Signs of a young tree are a grayish tint, viscosity and hardness. Older trees have darker, more brittle wood. This type of oak is valued for its uniform, dense texture; during processing it does not deform and does not become darker.

Red oak grows in America. It got its name due to the reddish hue of the wood of an adult tree. Experts believe that a very valuable quality of this species is that, compared to ordinary oak, solid wood can be easily processed by planing. Products made from red oak are more often than others decorated with carved patterns.

Oak wood is saturated with tannins; large amounts of them lead to darkening when the wood comes into contact with salt or alkali. In the process of manufacturing furniture products from this material, it is necessary to exclude the use of alkaline casein glue.

As for the famous bog oak, it is necessary to clarify this. This is not a natural type of oak, but a material that receives unique properties and color due to the tree being under water for a long time. Bog oak could lie in a layer of sand at the bottom of a reservoir for hundreds or even thousands of years (furniture made from such trees is kept in museums). The color of stained oak furniture is black with a purple tint and silver veins.

Cork oaks grow in the Mediterranean region. Wood of this type is not used for the production of furniture; it is usually used to make finishing materials. Products made from black African oak are of high value.

Why a solid oak bed captivates buyers

The main advantage of a solid oak bed is its long service life, and then its luxurious and presentable appearance. When purchasing such furniture, you can expect to use it for decades and even pass it on to inheritance.

Again, it is a mistake to think that an oak bed is some kind of dark brown bulky product. It must be said that in nature oak has more light shades. The pattern of wood fibers is very beautiful, so experts prefer not to paint the products, but to leave the natural tone of the wood. Hiding such luxury under a layer of paint would be unjustifiably stupid.

The presence of an oak bed in your bedroom will add aristocracy and luxurious notes to the room. And for some, such high-quality and durable furniture becomes an element of prestige and high status. High-quality materials chosen for manufacturing guarantee the environmental safety of the product.

Natural wood does not emit any harmful substances during operation.

Also noteworthy is the fact that oak furniture is not subject to putrefactive processes. Nests of bugs and other parasitic insects will not appear on the solid wood bed body.

Of course, before ordering oak furniture, you need to take into account some features. It is better to place a bed made of solid wood, made even in the most laconic version, in a spacious bedroom. Plus, oak beds usually have a significant weight; they need to be installed immediately in a permanent place. To move the product, you will need the help of a physically strong man.

What types of solid oak beds are there: shapes and models

Solid oak is used to make a wide variety of models. The beds are completed depending on the needs of customers and decorated with various decorative elements:

  • The most popular among buyers are the rectangular-shaped models of the classic style. The size range is very large: there are single beds made of solid oak, one-and-a-half and double. Of course, no one will limit the client only to a classic design; the product can be made in any other stylistic direction.
  • Corner bed models look original. Such solid wood furniture is made to order; their installation requires a special approach. Corner models have sides that visually increase the size of the bed. Non-standard models usually look larger, so spacious bedrooms are needed to accommodate them.
  • Round beds also have fans; they have become very popular recently. The smooth shapes of the rounded models will harmoniously fit into the interior of a large apartment or country house.
  • In a children's room for two children, the best solution would be to buy a comfortable bunk bed made of oak wood. This design meets all the requirements for safety and strength, and also significantly saves space. Many models combine sleeping areas and a study area. Loft beds are entire complexes, complemented by a table, wardrobe, cabinet, ladder and other elements.
  • A widely used option nowadays is also a solid oak bed model with a lifting mechanism. Its acquisition is beneficial from all sides. Firstly, you get a reliable and good-quality bed with a comfortable sleeping place, and secondly, a spacious compartment for storing various equipment and boxes of seasonal shoes, located at the bottom under the base of the bed. Thanks to the lifting mechanism, the base is easy to lift and get everything you need.

It is irrational to install a spring system on a heavy oak bed, as it will quickly fail. Gas lifts on the lifting mechanism lift the base with the mattress quite easily. The interior space of the drawer can accommodate many personal items, blankets, pillows and other bedding.

  • In addition to the above option, drawers or roll-out drawers, which can be installed on one or both sides of the bed, act as a storage system. There are different options for organizing the internal space: there can be one full-length drawer or two or three small ones. They are mounted on ball guides, allowing them to be extended to their full depth without fear of breaking. Roll-out drawers are not attached to the bed, but are pulled out from under it on their own wheels.
  • In a small bedroom or children's room you can put a single ottoman made of solid oak. Such a sleeping place is quite enough for one person to sleep comfortably, and the back allows you to use it as a sofa, if desired, by placing large pillows on it. The beautiful shapes of the armrests and backrest look modern and original.

An oak bed is usually accompanied by a stylish headboard and footboard. Thus, the appearance of an oak bed directly depends on the shape of the backrest; they can be rectangular, square, rounded or very complex geometry. The back can be rigid or supplemented with a soft element.

The wood is decorated with carved patterns, inserts, figurines, and forging. Such headboards often look like a work of art.

Bed headboards with soft inserts made of natural or artificial leather, as well as high-quality fabric, have a luxurious look. These models, as a rule, belong to the classic style.

Solid Oak Bed Styles

Furniture items must be selected in accordance with the style of the interior. One style requires a simple shape, while another requires a richly decorated piece.

  • For a classic bedroom interior, it is better to choose a model with simple shapes. Typically, such a bed has a high headboard and footboard. Carving or fabric upholstery is used as decoration.
  • An oak bed will look great against the background of beige-brown walls. One of the rules of a classic interior is symmetry. A large model can be placed in the central part of the room, with the headboard facing the wall, and high cabinets matching the color and style can be placed on both sides. It’s good when there are sconces or lamps with beautiful lampshades near the bed. Textile decor - bedspreads, pillows and curtains - should be combined with each other.

  • For the Rococo and Baroque styles, you need to choose a bed richly decorated with carved patterns and gilding. The wood color “bleached oak” has become a recognized favorite for such an interior. The bed should a priori look rich. To give a luxurious look, brocade, satin, and velvet are used to cover the headboard parts. Stucco molding, painting, golden wallpaper - all this magnificent decor is designed to create a truly royal style of the apartment. To make the bed look more impressive, choose parquet that is one or two shades richer than the furniture.
  • Furniture with smooth lines is best suited to an Art Nouveau style interior. You should choose a bed made of solid oak with a simple but refined shape. You can use asymmetry in decor, use combinations with different decorative materials. Also, the S-shaped headboard will be a wonderful decoration for the entire bedroom as a whole. Lamps should create dim light. Floral or animal patterns will look good on curtains, bedspreads and other textile decor.
  • When creating a minimalist bedroom design, you should choose a rectangle-shaped bed. The main thing in minimalism is not to overdo it with decorative elements: only the necessary items should be present in the interior. A solid wood model with preserved natural wood color will fit perfectly into this design. In general, modern styles are characterized by the use of low beds; they usually have a small headboard and no legs. The role of a headboard can be performed by a decorative panel on the wall behind the bed.
  • Oak furniture will organically complement the modern and very popular loft style today. Once arose during the crisis years in America, this method of bringing industrial premises into a residential appearance has become not only a design, but a way of life for creative youth. The loft style combines almost incompatible things: rough-hewn walls and a luxurious leather sofa, open communications and a lot of sunlight. A wooden bed that resembles a pedestal can be a great option.

A large space allows you to experiment; you shouldn’t be afraid to install a rather massive bed, and the headboard can resemble a part of a disassembled shipping container.

It wouldn’t hurt to have some markings on the frame, and leather poufs would look good next to such a presentable product. The lamps should also match the style.

The loft direction is characterized by open spaces and the absence of walls, so it is important to allocate a place for the bedroom that will allow you to feel comfort and privacy.

Designer photos of beds in various styles

Due to their quality and environmental friendliness, wood models fit harmoniously into many style trends.

Loft

For this style, an excellent solution would be durable, bulkier structures on a metal frame, made of oak, or brutal catwalk models, distinguished by truly powerful charisma. Such massive wooden beds, without unnecessary decorative elements, will perfectly match the urban interior style.

Scandinavian

As simple as possible, beds made from northern woods, such as birch or pine, will organically complement the Scandi interior.

Classic

An elegant classic bed with an ornate high headboard and back, decorated with attractive carved openwork details, forged elements or inlaid stones and velvet fabric, has a truly sophisticated look that fits perfectly with this luxurious and rich style.

Provence

French Provence assumes natural and high-quality materials, so a wooden bed is perfect for such an interior ensemble. Models with patina, made from solid birch, ash or other light wood, products complemented with floral patterns or carvings would be appropriate here.

Chalet

Discreet and simple designs made from darker shades of wood with a headboard decorated in natural or faux leather will be the hallmark of a chalet-style design.

Country (rustic)

For rustic country, beds made from untreated boards, slightly rough logs, unpainted bars and uneven surfaces, models with the effect of artificial aging or designs with balusters of the most varied shapes are perfect.

Minimalism

Simple designs of rectangular or square shape, wooden podium beds with a storage system, devoid of elaborate decorative elements, are a universal solution for a minimalist interior.

High tech

This style, defined by its special advanced functionality, can be designed using the most geometric designs with a headboard fused together with bedside tables, which will form an extraordinary and exclusive design.

Oriental

Low models on the catwalk, characterized by refined asceticism, made of dark woods such as wenge or cherry or ware, decorated with high carved spiers or chiffon canopies, will give the oriental design even more authenticity.

Modern

For a romantic and sensual modernism, choose beds that have a traditional height and length. The headboard is decorated with expressive carvings, gilded elements, leather, satin or silk textiles.

Solid oak bed color

The color of the product can be dark or light, but in any case the bed will look great. Oak fibers form an inimitable pattern that attracts admiring glances with its depth. To give the required color to the bed, the parts are subjected to special processing. The following shades are mainly popular:

  • Bleached oak is a color close to white, found only in young wood, however, it is irrational to use young trees for the production of furniture items. To make the product milky, ashen, pearl or snowy shades, the array is treated with reagents that have bleaching properties. After this, oil is rubbed into the wooden surfaces and varnish is applied. Companions for these tones can be light gray, emerald, purple, lilac, gold or black in interior decoration.
  • Golden oak - this color is closest to the natural tones of oak wood. Therefore, there is no need for artificial dyes; the specialist only tints the product or applies several layers of varnish. The artificial aging technique gives the bed a rustic touch. Treatment with a chemical composition creates a relief pattern on the product; denser fibers rise slightly above the surface and are highlighted with a darker tonic. In the interior, the color of golden oak can be combined well with reddish-brown or dark red tones.
  • Dark oak – this is the natural tone of the wood of the Cognac variety, common in the forests of Europe. Artificially, a light array can be given a dark shade using heat treatment. Thanks to this technology, the bed is reddish or brown in color, with the added bonus of increasing the strength of the wood. Red, marsh, blue, gold and silver look good with the resulting shades.
  • Black oak - such a deep shade is associated with stained wood. However, real bog oak is a unique and rare material, so we have developed a method for obtaining this color artificially. In the same way, a smoky shade of a solid oak bed is obtained. Under natural conditions, only African oak can boast a dark chocolate color with a characteristic vein pattern. Next to a black bed, you can use gray-white, light blue, beige, scarlet, yellow and silver tones as a companion.

In accordance with your preferences and interior style, today you can easily purchase a bed made of solid oak from the manufacturer or made according to a special project.

White bed made of solid oak: advantages and subtleties of use

The white solid oak bed evokes sincere admiration for its luxurious appearance. For such products, decorated with a soft or hard headboard, in the decor of which natural or eco-leather and high-quality fabric are used, you can find a place in any interior, be it Gothic, Provence or loft.

Advantages of a white solid wood bed:

  • white color and minimalist design reflect the trends of modern styles and fashion trends;
  • the versatility of this shade makes it easy to create combinations with furniture in a different tone;
  • in a room with white furniture it is lighter, it feels light and airy;
  • even a massive model looks more elegant, sophisticated and attractive in white;
  • a large snow-white bed will stand out noticeably among other furnishings.

When choosing a white solid wood model, it is worth remembering some features. It is better to place such furniture in a spacious bedroom, as a small room will seem even smaller. The second disadvantage is that it is soiled; the slightest dirt will be visible on the white surface.

One way or another, having decided to buy a white oak bed, in the future you will enjoy not only the appearance, but also the comfortable rest and sleep on a luxurious bed.

Solid wood bed: modern styles and selection of the best wood (120 photos)

Replacing furniture is the logical conclusion of renovation work in an apartment. When moving into a new bedroom, you want everything to be done in the same style and color scheme.

A bed made of solid wood is a timeless classic, popular among both young people and the older generation. Such models are made from solid or spliced wooden panels, characterized by a very low level of deformation.

Walnut, oak, ash, beech and other types of wood when processed look unique and have a unique texture. They are easy to process and always decorate the interior.

Brief contents of the article:

Features of a double bed made of solid oak

To make your stay as comfortable as possible, it is better to choose a bed with a large sleeping area. Even for one person, it is ideal to choose a one-and-a-half or double model. Wooden beds always remain popular and in demand on the market.

Manufacturers today offer a large selection of different oak models; they differ in style, shape and color. Solid oak is easy to process, so products are often decorated with beautiful carvings. Solid oak beds are usually made to order. Prices depend on size, additional decorative materials and design. The options are endless: there are cribs, bunk lofts, and huge double beds with high royal headboards.

You can embody any ideas and desires in the design of a solid wood bed. However, at the same time as the furniture, you need to think about the overall design of the bedroom. The interior can correspond to a specific style (classic, Provence, Scandi, ethno) or you can simply carry out a regular renovation without being tied to any design direction.

Oak furniture can decorate any bedroom, because there are practically no restrictions in choosing its shape or shade. Almost all colors of the spectrum are available: from white, light gray and pearl to dark red, brown and black.

At your request, the manufacturer will install a lifting mechanism on the bed body or add pull-out storage containers to it.

Assembly Highlights

The same instructions for assembling other similar products apply to carved wooden beds. After all, by and large, these designs are distinguished from an ordinary bed only by the presence of figured decorative inserts.

Decorative headrest

Perhaps the main element that distinguishes exclusive wooden beds from serial models is the decorative headrest. Of course, the ideal option is to make a headrest from natural solid wood using figured relief wood carving.

But what should those who are not given such phenomenal talents do? It turns out that there is a way out, and more than one.

Frame with bottom support.

In addition to relief wood carving, there is also ordinary figured carving. In this case we mean working with a jigsaw. With the right approach, a regular electric jigsaw can be used to cut quite interesting, intricate patterns from a flat board or, at worst, thick plywood.

The main thing here is to find a beautiful ornament, and then accurately transfer its contours to the bed headrest panel. Next is the question of technology. Working with a jigsaw on wooden furniture is extremely simple; even an amateur can handle it. After the ornament is cut out, there is a painstaking job of processing the edges of the homemade carved headrest.

We won’t hide it, it’s hard.

The main problem is to smoothly and evenly round all the cut points with files. After which you will have to process it with several numbers of sandpaper, from No. 40 to No. 140 - 180, bringing the surface to a perfectly smooth state.

Those who are not capable of such labor feats can do it easier. The second acceptable option is a wooden bed with a soft headrest. Here it is not even necessary to use expensive valuable wood as a basis; a thick plywood sheet is quite enough.

First you need to decide on the shape of the headrest itself. Of course, it’s easier to take an even, strict rectangle. But believe me, a panel with a slightly rounded top edge will look more impressive.

The radius is already selected according to your own taste. There are two ways to go here. The first and simplest is to cover the panel completely with foam rubber with a thickness of 50 mm and cover it with fabric or leather.

The second option is a little harder, but it's worth it:

  • To decorate the perimeter of the base, ready-made carved elements are purchased. Their price is reasonable, plus any furniture fittings store has a normal selection of such products;
  • Initially, as in the first case, soft upholstery is made. After that, carved fragments of wood are attached with self-tapping screws along the perimeter of the shield.

Overlay wooden fittings for furniture.

Advice: it’s better to make it removable. To do this, a plywood panel is separately cut and covered to the specified dimensions. After which it is mounted in place with self-tapping screws. This approach allows you to painlessly remove the upholstery for cleaning or replacement.

A few words about the principles of assembly

Although the principle of construction of all beds is approximately the same, there are several assembly options. We will not talk about complex models consisting of many parts, but will focus on the simplest and most accessible design for an untrained person, in our opinion. This is a podium-type bed with an internal drawer for things.

Legs are not provided here. The entire perimeter, with the exception of the panel for the headrest, is made of boards or furniture panels with a height of about 400 - 600 mm. Finding a solid monolith of this size is quite problematic, so it is better to assemble it from several boards 30–40 mm thick. At the corners, such panels are connected through a wooden beam with a cross-section of at least 50x50 mm.

Corner connections and mini-lift.

Of course, you can tinker with the butt end joint using furniture tenons. But it is much more convenient to tighten the structure with metal furniture corners. The same 50x50 beam is attached to the floor around the perimeter; it will serve as the basis for the bottom. It is better to use thick plywood as the starting material, but its strength is not enough, so stiffening ribs - strips with a section of 20x40 - are attached to the beam across the bed.

Not everyone can make beautiful side drawers at the base. Therefore, we will make a bed out of wood with a lifting mechanism. This mechanism will have to be purchased separately. The shield for the mattress is made similar to the bottom shield, but here plywood is not needed, it is enough to fill the transverse strips with a pitch of 50 mm.

The design is being disassembled.

The mechanism for lifting the board with the mattress is mounted on the side planes in the headboard area. Please note that it serves only for lifting; the shield will rest on bars fixed around the perimeter. The presented photos show such furniture elevators.

How to choose a solid oak bed to buy for a long time

Before purchasing or placing an order for a bed, you need to answer the following questions:

  • for whom the product is purchased: a newborn baby, two children, an adult, a married couple;
  • what are the dimensions of the bedroom;
  • what style is the interior in?

Of course, you need to choose any bed after considering all the nuances. However, if we are talking about ordering a bed made of solid oak, then a mistake can cost you too much. It is difficult to return such a product to the manufacturer if there is no defect on his part.

Choosing a bed for a married couple is a very responsible matter. Most importantly, both need to be given a place to rest comfortably. The first rule: the length of the sleeping place must exceed the height of the tallest family member by at least ten centimeters (for example, the height of one spouse is 1.8 m, the other is 1.65 m, then the length of the bed will be 1.9 m). The second rule concerns width: in order to sleep comfortably, everyone should lie down in their own half with their hands folded under their heads. If you don’t feel your “neighbor’s” elbow, then this sleeping place is suitable for you.

A separate question is what is better: a bed with legs or one standing on the body? In this case, you need to focus on your health status and age. Older people who experience pain in the spine or joints prefer taller models that are easier to get up from. If there are no back problems, you can choose a fashionable low bed.

As already mentioned, to place an oak bed it is better to have a spacious bedroom, since such models usually look massive and occupy a large area. It is good to install the bed in the central area so that you can freely approach from all sides except the headboard. If necessary, it should be equipped with a storage box and gas lifts installed on the lifting mechanism. Another option is to equip the bed with roll-out drawers on wheels. There is no point in placing an oak bed in a small room where it will be sandwiched between other pieces of furniture.

Oak is a strict and restrained tree, so it is best used to make a bed for a classic or modern minimalist style.

Natural solid oak is distinguished by its natural beauty, and therefore the products do not require excessive decoration. The most popular beds are classic rectangular shapes with a high headboard. The footboard is much lower; in modern styles this part is missing. Frame parts are decorated using milling.

Oak beds are usually complemented by stable, reliable legs. In general, the products look solid and well made. To increase comfort, you need to purchase an orthopedic base and a high-quality mattress. It is not advisable to paint the beds; tinting and a distinct wood pattern look much more impressive.

A custom-made bed can have any design features: a lifting mechanism, a cabinet at the back of the headboard, drawers. These additional elements make the product unique and save room space. The luxurious look attracts attention to the model made of solid oak, decorated with genuine leather. The classic rectangular shape of the bed is easy to place in a room with any geometry.

To decorate the details of the headboard and footboard, carving, milling, and forged inserts are used. The bed for the bedroom in the Rococo style is distinguished by its rich decor; carriage stitch is often used to make the headboard. A classic-style product usually stands on square, stable legs 15–20 cm high. Since oak beds are superior to others in strength, reliability and durability, they can be safely ordered for people with large body weight.

The universal low frame and modest ascetic design of the bed can be chosen by lovers of interiors in oriental style, modernist and neoclassical styles. The low headboard has a simple rectangular shape and no decor. This design is characterized by a design without a footboard. The legs themselves are also missing; the bed stands directly on a high frame. Low bedside tables or tables can complement the bedroom set.
