Features of minimalism
This style is very simple in its essence, but at the same time significantly different in its manifestations. Several distinct trends stand out: Japanese, futuristic, environmental, Scandinavian, contemporary, high-tech. But basically the lines between styles are very blurred, and even more so when original designer interiors are in fashion.
The common properties of all minimalist movements are the simplicity of forms and materials. Clear geometry always reigns here, there is no decor or complex textures, but there is maximum light. With all the rigor, there is no need for classical symmetry or pronounced centers. But working with space is relevant: zoning, unification, division.
Features of interior lighting
The minimalist design is characterized by an abundance of light, which helps to create the effect of a spacious room even in a small kitchen. Proper lighting design can also enliven a strict interior and smooth out the coldness inherent in this genre. It is also recommended to decorate with an abundance of light - more space “opens up”.
There should be as much natural light as possible, which is important to take into account at the design stage. It’s great if it is possible to enlarge the window openings, but leave the windows themselves without textile decoration.
There should be many sources of artificial lighting. Various combinations of a large central chandelier and several spotlights, table and plinth lighting, bus lights, and light panels fit successfully.
The design of chandeliers and lamps can be either simple and discreet - in the shape of a ball, prism, square and other geometric shapes, or non-standard - in the form of atoms, Japanese origami, etc. But the colors are only consistent - it is better to save painted lampshades for another design.
Plastic, metal lamps, with glass or wooden elements would be appropriate materials. They make the interior laconic.
Color spectrum
The color scheme of minimalist interiors is always simple and restrained. You rarely see more than 2-3 colors in one room, and there are even monocolor interiors. Think over this moment in advance so as not to make mistakes with decoration, furniture and accessories.
White kitchen in minimalist style
The choice of shades of white is much greater than it seems at first glance: from the bluish whiteness of futuristic interiors to the warm milky Scandinavian ones. This is a classic of any minimalist interiors, because it is the most neutral and light. Black or bright colored accents stand out especially effectively against a white background.
Black kitchen in minimalist style
Jet black has two main uses: as a base or as a contrast. In large, spacious and bright kitchens, you can safely use it as a basis - and your interior will always be stylish, elegant and expensive. Or use it for contrasting inserts on a light background to define zones, visually adjust geometry or increase the space of a room.
Beige kitchen in minimalist style
Warm, cozy beige in all its variations is another classic minimalist base. In the kitchen it is more practical than white, because it does not stain as easily, but at the same time it is warmer than gray - which means it is suitable for cold northern rooms. Beige kitchen is good in natural materials, with wood, cotton, linen, bamboo and fresh flowers.
Gray kitchen in minimalist style
Gray came into fashion several seasons ago, and is now used as the basis of most modern styles. In minimalism, cold steel, warm brownish taupe, and dark graphite shades are good. At the same time, gray is metal, mirrors, chrome plumbing, household appliances, and fittings.
Bright accents
In addition to neutral colors, minimalism also requires bright colors: green, yellow, purple, red, orange, pink, blue. They are becoming less and less common as the main decoration, but it can be an accent wall, facades or accessories. Such a kitchen immediately acquires its own mood and atmosphere.
The main features of minimalism
Using a set of vital items, minimalism models the space so that it turns out lighter, more spacious and lighter. In addition, it has:
- Laconicism in the interior.
- Simplicity in design.
- Functionality.
- Minimal presence of decor.
- Monochrome.
The main motto of minimalism is as much free space as possible without pompous decorations.
If the kitchen has a small area, most often they do a remodel, converting it into a kitchen-living room, removing unnecessary nooks and crannies, leaving the space free and bright. In this style direction, light plays an important role. Preference is given to multi-level saturated lighting, with the help of which one or another zone of the room is highlighted.
A characteristic feature of minimalism is the absence of ornament.
White, gray, beige, and black tones are used as a color palette to create a kitchen design in a minimalist style . The combination of these colors creates the effect of laconicism, presentability and at the same time a homely comfortable environment.
Light wall decoration creates the effect of limitless space
The role of decorative elements is given to small bright details - this could be a contrasting element of furniture, a special textured finish on one of the walls, an expressive apron, a flowerpot with a living plant.

Kitchen furniture
Kitchen furniture made in a minimalist style fits well into the small rooms of panel houses built in Soviet times. In addition, if it is light with glass and mirror doors, it visually expands the space. If you are designing a kitchen in a Khrushchev-era building, then this style will fit well into the interior of the apartment.
The basic rule of minimalism is simplicity and functionality
The strict design and impeccable smoothness of the facades hide the presence of smart fittings, a thoughtful storage system and clear organization of cabinets
The material used to make the kitchen set does not play a special role - you can use natural wood, chipboard, metal, glass. You can install glass doors made of frosted, opaque glass. Working surfaces can be made from cold materials such as artificial or natural stone, tempered glass, and metal.
It is best to purchase such furniture in a specialized showroom, or order built-in furniture made to order
Dinner table
A glass dining table of simple configuration will fit well into a minimalist design. It won't overload the space. If desired, it can be replaced with an island table or a bar counter that smoothly extends from the window sill. Chairs can be the most original, even colored plastic.
A rectangular table made of solid wood or artificial stone can be installed in a studio kitchen
In a small kitchen space, the following options are suitable:
- Folding or retractable tabletop.
- Bar counter instead of a table.
- Small table with glass top.
Appliances
As for household appliances, the ideal solution for a minimalist kitchen is built-in appliances. All household appliances must be organized and strictly in their place.
The use of built-in equipment does not violate the overall harmony of the interior
Wall decoration
One of the main tasks in the laconic design of a kitchen space is high-quality preparation of the walls; they must be absolutely even and smooth . The finishing materials are moisture-resistant, washable wallpaper, plain or paintable. For the dining area, you can make an exception by choosing photo wallpapers with images of modern cities or a three-dimensional geometric pattern. The walls can simply be painted with a reliable water-based composition and decorated with PVC panels.

To visually expand the space, furniture and walls are made in light colors
They can be plain without a pattern or with a discreet abstract pattern. The relief is appropriate - one of the walls can be made of textured plaster in the form of a brick, which is typical for the loft style. You can highlight the dining area using a contrasting texture, wood styling, or simply painting it a different color.
Kitchen apron
The kitchen apron can be made transparent, colorless or brightly colored, but without a pattern. The set looks stylish when the apron and countertop are finished in the same color. There are no restrictions in the choice of material: tiles, artificial stone, tempered glass. The main thing is that it be practical. See the photos below for examples.
Floor and ceiling finishing
To create a harmonious design, special attention should be paid to the finishing of the ceiling and floor. As flooring, you can use materials such as laminate, linoleum, parquet, ceramic tiles, porcelain stoneware.
An interesting solution would be to install a self-leveling floor with a glossy surface. This non-standard approach will emphasize the style of the room; a glossy floor can become the highlight of the kitchen.
It is important to be straightforward and strict
The ideal ceiling for a minimalist design is white and smooth . It can be built from plasterboard, which will hide all the irregularities. But the best solution would be to install a stretch ceiling with a glossy shine.
A multi-level ceiling is appropriate in a studio kitchen
Interior Design
Of course, you should not bring the kitchen to strict minimalism, where there are only pots and pans. You can add something beautiful to this interior, but this thing should not be unnecessary. If it is bulky and rarely used, then it is better to get rid of it. The minimalist style is precisely designed so that the set of elements fits organically into the room. In addition to the fact that there will be more free space in the room, you do not need to spend a lot of time cleaning it.
Fruits on the table and miniature pots of flowers will enliven the atmosphere and microclimate
Several expensive and necessary accessories will emphasize the asceticism, convenience and self-sufficiency of minimalism. It can be:
- Abstract painting or retro photo.
- Laconic wall clock.
- Unusual lamps in loft style.
- Fruit compositions or plants.
In this style, light natural color is most often used, and bright and black are less common.
Important! Any new item in the kitchen in a minimalist style should be functional, appropriate and associated with progress and prosperity
To organize a simple and laconic interior, it is recommended to abandon traditional textiles and give preference to Japanese or Roman curtains or blinds. They look much more elegant and strict, while they fit perfectly into the interior of a kitchen designed in a minimalist style.
Roman blinds fit organically into a minimalist interior
Curtains or curtains for windows should be selected according to style, the fabric should be practical and easy to care for. Roman blinds fit organically into a minimalist interior

Correct lighting
One of the features of minimalism is bright lighting, consisting of several levels of lighting fixtures. Chandeliers are rare in interiors and have a rather laconic design. Most often you can find pendant lamps above a dining table or bar counter.
If the room is spacious enough, you can install a whole series of small ceiling lamps, simple geometric shapes without decorative elements.
Small spotlights mounted into the ceiling along the entire perimeter will also look good.
Kitchen-living room design in minimalist style
Minimalism is ideal for a kitchen combined with a living room . Its rules allow you to organize the space, get rid of everything unnecessary and maintain space - everything you need for comfort.
Zoning space is an excellent solution for the kitchen-living room. For this you can use:
- color contrast;
- two-level floor;
- bar counter;
- dinner table;
- light of different brightness.
When arranging a kitchen-living room, it is worth remembering laconicism, rigor and restraint. But in this case, the presence of home accessories, retro photographs, and plants in the interior is welcome.
The photo shows a minimalist design of a studio kitchen in Khrushchev
The minimalist style is not suitable for everyone and does not imply a tribute to fashion, but a special perception of the world. It requires rigor and an impeccable sense of proportion. It all comes down to individual needs. Minimalism is an interior where there are no things that are not used.
Kitchen furniture in minimalist style
A minimalist kitchen needs the most concise and functional set. Pay attention to furniture with simple smooth facades, without handles or visible fittings. Choose modern retractable, collapsible or folding systems that can easily accommodate all kitchen utensils. This is a good replacement for massive cabinets with hinged doors.
Finishing
The minimalist finish lacks panels, brick and stone masonry, stucco molding and other relief textures. Plaster or paint is the best choice for an interior in which the main thing is simplicity, clarity and conciseness.
Minimalism does not use complex finishing; painting and plaster are enough.
Ceiling
There should be no plinths or cornices on the ceiling; suspended and tensioned structures are not allowed. It is important to maintain maximum naturalness and authenticity. The color of the ceiling should match the finish of the walls to achieve design integrity.
The ceiling should be smooth and monochromatic, without decorative elements.
Floor
For the floor, the optimal solution would be parquet or laminate; for a small kitchen, you can use non-contrasting tiles.
For the floor it is better to use laminate or parquet.
The color of the flooring can be natural, such as light brown, beige or white, depending on the materials. It should not contrast with the walls and ceiling, so as not to create unnecessary color accents.
Walls
Tiles are often used for a kitchen apron, and light-colored paint or plaster is used to decorate the walls. The most fashionable colors for wall decoration: white, sand, beige, light gray, light blue, lemon. It is important to choose cool shades.
Important! Minimalism involves monochrome design, for example, finishing in gray, white or beige tones.
As a rule, walls are decorated in monochrome colors.
Decor
In a minimalist environment, meaningless decor is not appropriate: on the contrary, your task is to relieve the space of all unnecessary things. To decorate, use laconic bright accents: a poster on the wall, a composition of succulents in the corner. Even properly selected household appliances or heating radiators can become an independent accessory.
Curtains and textiles
Avoid meaningless textiles, as well as useless decorations - in the case of the kitchen, this is also practical. Instead of voluminous curtains and flowing tulle, use roller curtains. But napkins, potholders and towels in the same style will become the very functional accessory. Little things made entirely in one color, in several adjacent shades, or in bright and contrasting colors, but from the same fabric, look interesting.
Materials and design
Classic oriental style gravitates towards natural textures: wood, paper, stone, natural fabrics. And its newest trends actively exploit gloss, mirrors, acrylic, glass and chrome. The combination of the incongruous actively promotes contemporary art, another style whose formation was influenced by minimalism.
Floor finishing
For a minimalist kitchen floor, there is nothing better than tiles: ceramics, stone or large porcelain stoneware. It does not get dirty, it is afraid of moisture, does not absorb stains and is easy to clean. Choose a series with a textured or anti-slip coating - and it will also be safe.
If you prefer wood in the interior, use laminate, but take into account the specifics of the kitchen. Choose only moisture-resistant collections with special protection for all seams and junctions. Or, as a radical alternative, pay attention to monolithic self-leveling floors.
Ceiling design
In a minimalist kitchen, tension structures that hide communications and lamps look most appropriate. They delight you with a choice of colors and textures: matte, satin, glossy, in any tones and shades. At the same time, it is just a PVC film that is not afraid of moisture and can be easily washed even from grease with a soapy sponge.
Wall decoration
For minimalist walls there is no better option than the most banal painting. Just choose waterproof and washable paint - and then you won’t have problems even with light-colored surfaces. And if you want to refresh the interior, you just need to repaint the walls again.
Less commonly used are wallpaper, textured plaster, slabs or cladding panels. But the walls are a neutral background for the rest of the interior, so they should be plain. In such a kitchen there is no place for floral patterns or elaborate monograms: the maximum is geometric contrasting inserts.
Apron
It can be matched to the tabletop or in contrast with it. It will look stylish if you choose them from the same material, such as artificial stone.
A glass apron looks interesting, both transparent and plain colored. Boar tiles, wood or stone textures would also be a good solution.
Lighting and backlighting
Lighting has a special role in minimalist rooms because it is one of the foundations of style. If you are lucky with panoramic glazing, be sure to keep it and give up thick curtains. Make artificial lighting multi-level and adjustable to change zoning and intensity according to circumstances.
Spotlights mounted into ceilings around the perimeter or in separate series are the most versatile option. They have long and confidently replaced massive central chandeliers. Install flat wall sconces, lighting built into the set above the work surface, LED strips for decorating shelves and niches.
Technique
For minimalism, built-in appliances are best suited. This applies to the refrigerator, microwave, stove, coffee maker, dishwasher and other appliances.
When considering small equipment, such as a blender, multicooker, juicer, they should be hidden in a closet so that the working surface is as free as possible.
The hood is usually also built into a wall cabinet. However, if it fits harmoniously into the overall interior, then this is not necessary.
Apron for a minimalist kitchen
An apron for a minimalist kitchen is especially important because light paint or wallpaper gets dirty most easily. Lay it out of tiles of the same shade as the rest of the walls. Use a small mosaic of several adjacent tones with rare bright inserts. Pay attention to tempered glass or acrylic for modern minimalism or hi-tech.
Dining area furniture - how to choose a table, chairs
The dining area is an important part of every kitchen; to decorate it correctly, you need to choose a suitable set of table and chairs. In a minimalist style, the ideal combination of elements is important, and therefore the table and chairs should be from the same collection.
The size of the dining table is selected according to the number of eaters, but in a spacious room the table should be large in any case - a very small one will look ugly
If a dining table and chairs are selected for the living room kitchen in a minimalist style, then they should match the style of both the living room and the kitchen. If the kitchen is separate, then the dining area can be designed based on the surrounding design.
In a small kitchen, it is better to abandon the table, replacing it with a bar counter or combining it with an island
When choosing a table, you need to exclude options with a round tabletop on one leg, classic wooden tables and any traditional furniture. Futuristic options made of plastic or plexiglass in white are suitable. Tables with glass tops look beautiful; they can be round, oval or square. Chairs can have a futuristic or slightly office look; they should match the style of the table.
Kitchen corners with an extremely laconic design and leather upholstery are also acceptable (eco-leather is also suitable).
Kitchen-living room design in minimalist style
The minimalist kitchen-living room looks fresh and original, attracting lovers of open spaces. There is a minimum of furniture and things here, so you will be able to maintain the effect of a spacious and free room. Enclose the work area with a bar counter, place a sofa and coffee table as a separate island, replace massive cabinets and chests of drawers with lightweight prefabricated racks and shelves.
Table and chairs
Like the interior as a whole, the dining table should have a minimalist design. At the same time, it can be either massive or light, unobtrusive. The form can also be any.
The material selected is different, it can be tempered glass, MDF, wood, chipboard with veneer. For a small kitchen, the choice may fall on a transforming table, when the tabletop extends or unfolds. A book table is not acceptable for this style.
If the kitchen is 5-7 sq. m, then a bar counter that smoothly emerges from the window sill can serve as a table replacement. This option is also good for a studio, when the bar counter will zone the area.
Tip: Transparent furniture is perfect for a minimalist kitchen. A glass table and colorless chairs can expand the space. If you add color, then such furniture can dilute the interior and become an excellent accent.
Corner kitchen in minimalist style
Corner kitchen sets can rightfully be called the most functional. They fully embody the concept of using the entire space inherent in minimalism: you can build a pull-out unit, a sink or even a stove into a corner. Just watch the location of the working triangle and safe distances between communications.
Design of a small kitchen in a minimalist style
For a small kitchen, where it is especially important to use every centimeter, minimalism is the main style. Acrylic facades, glossy PVC ceilings, corner sets, organizers and storage systems will come to your aid. Use only light colors: white, beige or gray - they will make the room visually lighter.
Kitchen finishing materials characteristic of style
Minimalism relies on simple, practical natural resources. However, ash and pine, travertine and granite, glass and aluminum, concrete and ceramics can coexist with smooth plastic masses, microcement, artificial stone, and porcelain stoneware.
The ceiling in a minimalist kitchen is almost always white, less often peachy beige or smoky gray. It is completely devoid of decor - borders, moldings, corner elements, rosettes. Only light space that allows the eye to rest.
To achieve the effect of greater freedom, use whitewash, white paint or stretch ceilings illuminated by spotlights.
Ceiling finishing options, overview
The floor is covered with stone or ceramic slabs, polished boards or laminate, and filled with a seamless polymer coating. Parquet is possible, but not common.
Floor finishing options, types of floor coverings
When choosing finishing products, do not overdo it with gloss. Minimalism, unlike its “brother” high-tech, is more matte and dull.
Walls . It will not be considered a mistake if you cover them with panels of light plastic or frosted glass, or use monochrome skins. But it’s easier (and therefore philosophically closer to the style) to use natural raw materials: wood paneling, light plaster, large, unpatterned ceramic tiles. In the end, the walls can be painted.
All wall finishing options, materials overview
To prevent the ceiling and walls from merging and the room to look lifeless, combinations of different textures are used. Wood and tiles, concrete and plaster, brickwork and cork wallpaper can be the same color, but look contrasting to each other.
Textiles are practically absent in minimalist design. Minimalism, however, is ready to make concessions if the kitchen looks institutional without fabrics. Although the style is closer to blinds, windows can be curtained with Roman or regular blinds.
Naturally, they should be plain, have simple outlines, without prints or frills.
Kitchen in minimalist style - photos of real interiors
Still doubt that minimalism in the kitchen interior is so diverse and extremely multifaceted? We are ready to demonstrate this in practice and have already collected a large gallery of photos!
Kitchen set
As previously stated, style promotes functionality. The organization of cabinets should be well thought out; hidden storage systems are quite appropriate so that everything is as hidden from view as possible, while still being accessible.
Most often, the headset chosen is built-in. It is also customary for it to merge with the walls into one plane, so the color of the facade is selected to match the tone of the walls.
Tall cabinets are often used. The facade of such a kitchen is necessarily smooth and even. Preferably a matte surface, plain. Handles are rarely used in minimalism. Usually a “push-to-open” opening system is installed, when pressing the door helps it open.
You can use hidden handles or handle rails located at the bottom of the facade.
Advice: if the absence of handles is unattractive and impersonal for you, then it is permissible to use a relief facade made of MDF with 3D milling. At the same time, it is worth preserving the shape, color and finish inherent in minimalism.
In this style, it is often very attractive that the price of the headset can also be minimal, budget. If you use a facade made of laminated chipboard and acrylic or plastic cladding, this will be the most economical option. MDF is a more durable and environmentally friendly material, but the price will be slightly higher.
