Design of children's rooms in wooden houses

The child spends a lot of time in the nursery. Therefore, it should be spacious, cozy and absolutely safe for the baby.

The most important thing in a room is the furniture. It should be beautiful, comfortable and practical. And also strong and environmentally friendly.

And all these qualities are contained in furniture made of wood. Let's consider all the pros, and possibly cons, of wooden models.

Materials

Looking at the photo of children's furniture made of wood, everything seems so strong and durable. In principle, this is how it is. The only difference is what exactly the furniture for children is made of. Made from solid wood or chipboard and MDF. But everything is in order.

Multifunctional products

Such furniture is designed not only for direct use, but also for play use, for example, a wardrobe, a loft bed or a car. Items are decorated with painted patterns and appliqués, and rope ladders.

If you decide to choose furniture for a girl, this is exactly what you need; different functionality allows you to create a palace for a princess.

Items made from pine, beech, oak and other trees are divided into groups:

Cabinet sets are versatile and durable. Product designs vary depending on the needs and age of the child. For example: an ordinary nightstand can become a small table, and a crib can become a place for a teenager to sleep. The wardrobe and desk remain unchanged.

Modular sets include a table, chair, desk for home use, and some bed models. The furniture parts are easy to put together, like a construction set, and from the resulting set you can create a single idea for the interior.

Sections and compartments allow you to accustom your child to order and organize the storage of clothes and other things. Such furniture can easily be changed to suit the child's needs.

The usual set for a children's room is: a bed, a table or desk, a chair. What the model will be depends only on the wishes of your child.

Our article contains photos of children's furniture made of wood. After reviewing our selection, you can make the right choice. If your child chooses a set for his room himself, then give him some practical advice.

Natural wood

The best furniture is furniture made from natural materials. Yes, it is very expensive, but if possible, then this is the best option for a children's room. Ecological and absolutely safe for children.

Wood continues to release beneficial substances even after complete processing. They help strengthen children's immunity and fight pathogenic bacteria and microbes.

Natural wood furniture for a children's room is made mainly from pine, birch, oak and beech.

Technology for making a wooden bed

Wood for a children's bed must be of a high level of quality. If the manufacturer follows all technologies during the manufacturing process, then such furniture will last for a long time. A trusted manufacturer selects only high-quality materials. He carefully dries it in a heating room, cuts it, processes it competently, and makes blanks. High-quality material is smooth to the touch, making a reliable and safe prefabricated structure.

When purchasing a bed, do not forget to purchase children's chests of drawers made of solid wood. This piece of furniture is indispensable in the bedroom. You can store a large number of things in it. Thanks to many compartments, you can easily find the item you need at home. A children's table made of solid wood can perfectly complement the bedroom design. This piece of furniture is easy to use and durable.

Birch

Birch furniture has a light shade. The fibrous structure of the material absorbs paint well, so “birch” furniture can come in the most unexpected shades and colors.

These are reliable, beautiful products that have bactericidal and hypoallergenic properties. Birch is much more resistant to external damage than pine.

However, the array is very susceptible to sudden changes in temperature and high air humidity.

How to make a wooden bed for a child with your own hands

So, if you know how to handle wood and do not disdain careful work, then you can make a bed for a child yourself, only after purchasing the appropriate lumber. Let's look at the instructions for making a spacious bed for a child without unnecessary decorative elements. So, let's begin.

Step No. 1 – collect the necessary materials and tools

So, the first thing we have to do is assemble the materials for work and tools with which we can bring our workpieces to fruition.

First of all, the materials needed to create the bed are purchased.

Prices for construction boards

Construction boards

Table 1. Tools and materials needed to make a wooden bed for a child

MaterialsTools
  • to make the frame we will need a board with parameters 2.5x20x240 centimeters (4 pieces);
  • to create support beams we will need boards with parameters 5x10x240 centimeters (3 pieces);
  • to make a side decorative strip, you will need 2.5x5x240 boards (3 pieces);
  • timber for creating supports with parameters 10x10x240 (1 piece);
  • to make the bottom from slats, you need to collect boards with parameters of 2.5x7.5x240 centimeters (19 pieces).
  • centimeter construction tape;
  • a set of tools for drilling holes at an angle;
  • a circular saw;
  • grinding machine with abrasive pads of various grain sizes;
  • glue gun for working with wood;
  • drill;
  • adjustable square for measuring;
  • clamps;
  • a set of screws 30, 50, 60 millimeters;
  • water-based acrylic varnish mixture;
  • sandpaper;
  • stain;
  • brushes;
  • putty for working with wood.

The smoother the blanks you purchase, the less time you will have to spend on processing them.

We advise you to choose pine as the material for the bed. The fact is that it costs less than other hard and strong wood species. In addition, it is pine that is presented in stores in the largest assortment, which allows independent furniture makers to save on purchases by taking, for example, the highest quality material for the body, and second-class raw materials for the legs.

Advice: do not buy too knotty raw materials. The more knots, the longer you will have to sand the product.

Step No. 2 - let's start cutting materials

So, now we will need to cut the previously purchased lumber so that it acquires the parameters required according to our project.

First of all, it is necessary to cut the purchased materials

1. For the frame we will need to cut 4 boards from wood using a saw:

  • two with parameters 2.5x20x205 centimeters;
  • the remaining two are 2.5x20x148.5 centimeters.

2. To make a support, you will need three boards with the same parameters: 5x10x202 centimeters.

3. To make the legs, we will need 6 bars of the same size.

Precise cutting of slats is necessary to create a stable structure

4. The slats for the bottom on which we will lay the mattress must be prepared in the same quantity, 19 pieces. The parameters of each slats will be as follows: 2.5x7.5x148 centimeters.

5. In order to make a decorative finish for a child’s bed, you will need:

  • two boards with parameters 2.5x5x150 centimeters;
  • one board 2.5x5x209.5.

Step No. 3 – making the bed frame

So, take the boards prepared for the bed frame and sequentially connect them to each other, similar to the photo above, using self-tapping screws. Holes for fastening systems are drilled with a drill at an angle, using angle drilling devices.

Subsequently, the screws are inserted into the wood at an angle

At the same stage, if you so desire, you can process the edges of the frame boards manually using a small plane.

A great idea would be to manually trim the edges of the part with a plane.

Afterwards, the end part must be processed with a grinding machine in order to smooth out all the irregularities.

The boards are fastened with 30 mm self-tapping screws mounted on a screwdriver.

Please note: to make the boards connect to each other even more tightly, it is better to apply wood glue to the places where they touch. Remove excess of this material with a napkin.

So, our frame is ready.

What does the assembled frame look like?

Attach a square to the frame to make sure that you have connected its parts correctly. In other words, you need to check that the boards are aligned at right angles.

Attach the square to the product

Step No. 4 – paint the frame

At this stage the frame is painted. You can use paint, stain, varnish or something else, but it is better to do the processing now, when there is nothing to stain except the frame and floor.

Painting the frame

Step No. 5 - make the bottom from slats

We take the boards, which a little later will become supports for our bottom of the bed, and make guide holes in them at the same angle, the parameters of which are 5 by 10 centimeters.

You can simply mark the places where the holes should be located:

  • step back 5 centimeters from the edge of the workpiece;
  • make a litter every next 25 centimeters;
  • drill holes at an angle.

How to properly prepare the support piece for the bottom

Now the support bars need to be attached. To do this, you first need to place the paint-dried frame on its side and place a block with holes on it.

Place the future bed frame on its side

Now we need to apply glue to the block, bring it to the frame, connect it tightly and then:

  • screw 50 mm self-tapping screws into the very end of the part and its middle;
  • tighten the parts tightly together using clamps.

Apply wood glue liberally to our block

Check the parts for any gaps between them. Provided that there are no holes, screw all the remaining screws into the holes intended for them.

Tightly tighten our parts with clamps so that there are no gaps between them

Next, it is necessary to process the timber, which will subsequently play the role of a central support supporting the bottom. To do this, we make guide holes:

  • in the amount of two pieces at one end;
  • in a single version at the other end.

Making guide holes for self-tapping screws

Now we attach the beam to the frame, having previously placed it on supports so that it is at the level we need.

After connecting the beams and the bed, you need to cover all conductive holes with wood putty, which you prepared in advance at the stage of collecting materials to create the bed. Apply just enough to fill the indentations; you just don’t need to cover anything on the surface.

Fill the pilot holes

Step No. 6 – making the legs of the future bed

Now we need to make legs for our bed. To do this, we will use bars with parameters 10 by 10 by 10.5 centimeters. In total, after cutting the material, we got 6 pieces.

Blanks for making bed legs

It is necessary to cut each block, measuring 2.8 centimeters from its bottom side, in order to give the cube the shape of a leg. The saw is installed at an angle of 45 degrees.

Legs for a future wooden bed are made from thick timber

After the part is cut, it is best to process it to give it an acceptable appearance:

  • plane;
  • grinding machine.

Next you need to attach the legs to the supports:

  • lateral;
  • central.

How stylish homemade bed legs look

In this case, the central bars do not need to be mowed; no one will see them anyway.

The legs, located in the center, do not need to be cut, since in any case they will not be visible to either you or others

Step No. 7 – make decorative inserts

It is necessary to take the slats for finishing the bed and saturate them on all sides with a dark brown stain.

Impregnate the slats with stain of any desired shade

Then we will need to apply water-based acrylic varnish, which we also previously prepared, to the dried products, and then leave the products to dry again.

The varnish will need to be applied according to the instructions, in several layers. After applying each layer, the product is rubbed with sandpaper manually or using a sanding machine in order to remove all irregularities and bubbles remaining on the decorative elements.

It is important to properly process the slats to give them a more solid appearance.

Let's put the finished decorative elements aside for now and move on to making slats for the bottom.

Step No. 8 - make slats for the bottom

We indicated the parameters of the slats for the bottom during cutting. It would be wise to complete one part first, and then do all the rest from it, without having to re-measure and mark the parts.

Cut out all the slats at once

Next, you need to process the resulting parts using the same plane and grinder.

Making the details look aesthetic

Next you need to do the following:

  • sequentially attach our bottom slats to the supports;
  • place decorative elements at the ends of the bed, placing them on glue;
  • tighten the glued parts with clamps, and in order not to damage the varnish, do this through a gasket made of fabric or other material.

Appearance of the assembled bed

A mattress is already placed on the finished product, and your child’s bedding is laid on top of it.

The bed is ready!

It is distinguished by the presence of a natural soft brown color with a small splash of red and brown. If this bed is not placed next to the battery, it will last for a long period of time.

Solid birch beds are also in high demand. This wood is durable, but is afraid of moisture. Birch is a durable material, but the service life of the furniture depends on the quality of its processing. The spectacular color of this solid wood will fit perfectly into a child's bedroom.

Functionality

Manufacturers of wooden furniture for children's rooms are divided into two categories:

Corpus. Considered durable and versatile. The constant basis of this category is a table, a wardrobe and a chest of drawers. The bed can be selected according to the age of the child. Flowers, various accessories and lighting will help decorate the interior.

Modular. There is no base, so you can assemble it according to your desire and taste. The advantage of this category is the individuality of the room’s interior.

Table, chairs, beds, cabinets - all this is selected separately and put together like a construction set into one whole.

According to their intended purpose, furniture for a children's room made of wood is divided into groups:

  • rest and sleep (beds, sofas);
  • food (table and chair);
  • activities (desk, table, chair);
  • storage of things (wardrobe, chest of drawers, shelves);
  • leisure (wall bars, horizontal bar).

Furniture for children made of solid wood

You need to understand that each material used to make furniture has both its advantages and disadvantages. When it comes to making an entire furniture set from one specific material, it is better to study its strengths and weaknesses in advance, and only then make a decision to purchase or place an order for production.

Like any other material, wood is characterized by its advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages

1. Environmental safety is the first and main advantage of the material we are interested in. A tree grows naturally in nature, the most that a person can influence is to give it energy for initial growth. Nature does the rest. In conditions of pollution, trees will not grow, therefore, the materials used to create children's furniture are the least harmful among all the items on the market, and are even useful.

2. Highest performance characteristics. It should be noted that this material is very:

  • durable;
  • reliable

Wood can withstand the irrepressible energy of a child who interacts with furniture not very carefully:

  • jumping on the bed;
  • slamming cabinet doors;
  • accidentally hitting the corners of the table, etc.

The service life of solid furniture is quite long

3. Expensive appearance. The aesthetic characteristics of this material are very, very solid. The fact is that each type of wood has a unique natural pattern, which, during the manufacture of furniture, is preserved either in almost its original form (when the wood is coated with varnish or treated with stain), or preserving only the relief of the wood layers (when coated, for example, with paint).

4. Beneficial effect on the human condition. Wood is a natural material that is capable of equalizing the balance of moisture in the air to the level required by a person.

The following wood species are considered to be especially actively “functioning” in this sense:

  • birch;
  • oak;
  • pine;
  • maple, etc.

Solid wood furniture is considered a classic solution and fits literally into any interior

Prices for solid wood furniture

Solid wood furniture

Flaws

1. High price. This drawback, perhaps, is one of the main ones for furniture made of solid wood, since not every parent is able to purchase a ready-made interior element, or the material for its implementation, because the child, in addition to furniture for the room, also needs to be provided with other necessary things .

However, the price will also vary according to the value of a particular type of wood. Some of them are considered more expensive due to their rarity and performance characteristics. Others are cheaper.

Solid wood furniture can cost a lot of money

2. Less flexibility than cheaper materials. So, if you are planning to make furniture for your offspring yourself, and at the same time make it from solid wood, the idea will only come true if you have the appropriate professional skills.

Beginner furniture makers or people who have basically no experience working with wood are better off paying attention to chipboard or plywood, since it is too expensive to spoil wood.

3. The need to care for furniture. Unfortunately, despite all its solid performance characteristics, wood must be maintained in certain conditions in order for it to serve you for a long time.

We are talking about creating and maintaining a certain temperature regime and air humidity level in the room in which the child lives:

  • 23-25 degrees Celsius;
  • humidity 50%.

A decrease or increase in these indicators can lead to:

  • wood rotting;
  • drying of the material.

Making a choice

Furniture in a nursery should be comfortable, practical and safe. There should be no sharp corners, toxic materials or fragile products in the room.

Wooden furniture gives the children's room coziness and comfort. Light damage caused during the game can be easily restored, and the furniture continues to serve for many years.

Subtleties of choosing items for the nursery

Sometimes the mobility of children is limitless and it is not a hindrance that there is not enough space in the room. Therefore, furniture in a children's room should not have sharp corners or protrusions, and the surface should be sanded and coated with special products.

When choosing a set, pay attention to how it fits into the interior. Do not purchase large products for a small space. The bed must correspond to the height and age of the child.

When purchasing a desk, give preference to a model with a rectangular tabletop with a slope. As for the chair, it should be stable with a straight back and leg support.

When purchasing, ask sellers for certificates and specifications for the product. Don’t save money, because wooden furniture is safe for health.
