Checkerboard black and white tiles on the floor in the kitchen: 60 examples of color combinations with furniture, walls and decor

Floor black and white tiles in the interior

Before starting renovations, it is necessary to think through the interior down to the smallest detail. Each element, texture and color used when decorating a room creates a composition within a specific style. Designers are developing new decorative directions. Manufacturers of finishing materials are also keeping up, offering a variety of textures and colors. Despite the huge assortment, it is difficult to make a final choice. Among the many new products, classic solutions remain at the peak of popularity. One of them is black and white tiles on the floor. Finishing of this type is actively used in residential and public buildings.

Where to begin

Before starting renovations in an apartment or house, the most important question arises: where to start? Changes in the interior should always bring joy.

Here are the main steps:

  1. You need to decide in which room the black and white floor tiles will be located. This coating is often used in the kitchen and hallway;
  2. You should choose a styling style. There are many different styles, the most common will be discussed below;
  3. It is necessary to choose tiles that suit the interior and style.

Decoration features

The contrasting combination of black and white has been used by designers for a very long time. This is a classic technique that does not lose its relevance and originality from season to season. Many people consider this duo boring and monotonous, but in reality the black and white finish looks rhythmic, stylish and impressive. The above color range is achromatic colors. They easily harmonize with other tones and shades. Ceramic floor tiles, painted in a classic tandem, are often used in minimalist and high-tech styles. There are many methods for laying dies. Colors on different sides of the spectrum emphasize and at the same time complement each other.

The design balances between too faded and light decor, as well as a gloomy atmosphere. This is the golden mean, combining the severity and richness of black with the purity and radiance of white.

Flooring design

Inserts of other colors

Black always looks impressive in combination with shades of precious metals. In combination with gold it adds luxury and warmth to the room, with silver it adds gloss to minimalism and hi-tech.

In the photo, the floor in the bathroom is tiled with mosaics with floral inserts.

Chess

Chess geometry looks very solemn and impressive. Black and white checkered is something of a classic in floor design. The effect can be modified depending on the choice of colors for the checkerboard design.

Patterns and prints

Black and white floral designs will create a calm and balanced interior. Against a black background, the patterns will look original and unusual.

Prints on a black floor look unusual and expensive if you choose the right color scheme.

Advantages of design

The characteristics of a black and white floor are elegance, expressiveness and rigor. The size of the tiles can be varied, as can their texture and location on the floor.

Experts highlight the main advantages of using tiles in classic colors:

  • Universal decor. The finishing material fits into various stylistic trends: both modern and classic.
  • Classic. The combination of black and white will always be relevant and appropriate. Using this technique, you don’t have to worry that it will go out of fashion.
  • Contrast. The technique of contrast brings out color from its best side, revealing its richness and fullness. Designers often use combinations of different colors to make them more decorative.
  • Rhythm. Alternation creates dynamics that make the overall design more spectacular and impressive.

Colors can have equal meaning or one can act as the main one. Tiles where white is the dominant color are ideal for miniature rooms, especially if there is a lack of lighting. A light color will serve as a visual enhancement of contrast, and black will focus attention on the floor finish and break the monotony of a monochromatic coating. If you want to focus on achromatic tiles, avoid using bright and catchy decorative elements that will catch your eye. Shades of gray, beige or brown are ideal as additional colors. It is not recommended to use more than 3-4 shades when decorating one room.

Classic combinations

In the design of any room, white floor tiles must be skillfully combined with wall decoration. It won't be difficult to do this.

With black

This is classic at its best. Tiled floors in this color can be complemented with:

  • Dark walls, but here you need not to overdo it. Dark wall decoration should be slightly diluted with other colors.
  • Walls and floors in black and white. Moreover, it does not have to be a checkerboard pattern; the contrasting stripes that go from the floor to the walls look original.

White floor idea for a public space

With red

Red can be bright and rich or muted. It is better to use red as accents on the walls, because sometimes there is too much of it and it gets tiring. Gold combines perfectly with these two elements; for example, one wall can be decorated with this precious metal.

Other shades and colors

White is universal; it can be safely combined with any colors, the main thing is not to overdo it. Balance in everything is the key to success when finishing floors and walls using the color in question.

Grout is the biggest problem when bleaching white tile floors

Finishing material in the interior

Regardless of fashion trends, black and white will always be used in decoration. In any area of a residential building, this combination will look successful and quite appropriate. A duet of achromatic colors can act as an independent decorative device or serve as a background for other elements.

Bathroom

When decorating a bathroom, tiles are used to cover not only the floor, but also the walls and ceiling. Black and white tiles can be displayed on any surface. A bathroom in the above range looks sophisticated and elegant. Snow-white and black plumbing fixtures look perfect with the finishing material. When it comes to decorating a small room, opt for white. A large amount of black will create a gloomy environment and narrow a compact space. In large rooms, the proportion of black and white can be equal. At the request of the client, black color can predominate.

To fully reveal the beauty of the tiles, it is necessary to place a sufficient number of compact lighting fixtures. It is advisable to install many miniature lamps around the perimeter of the room. Complement the classic decor with golden elements.

Kitchen

Black and white floors in the kitchen are a stylish and impressive design. Despite the popularity of the technique, it is not often used in kitchens.

An original technique is to place a panel with a black pattern in the center of the room , mounted into a floor made of white tiles. It will become a key element in the decor, but this technique can only be used in large rooms that have enough space. Standard rhythmic tile laying will also work. This is an ideal solution for a kitchen in high-tech or pop art style. For a modern twist, choose glossy tiles. Household appliances (stove, microwave, refrigerator, etc.) create an overall picture with the design of the floor in classic colors.

You can lay the finishing material in straight lines or diagonally, depending on your preferences and decorative features. Make sure that the interior remains intact.

Toilet

In rooms with a separate toilet, black and white flooring is also used. As a rule, this is a small room. As a base, it is better to use white tiles with the addition of black mosaic.

Living room

Floor tiles are used to decorate living rooms and halls. Finishing material in this combination looks great in a variety of stylistic directions. This color harmonizes wonderfully with antique carved furniture, voluminous parts coated with gilding or silver paint. In large rooms, you can use the technique of creating a composition from tiles of different colors. The drawing will become an original addition to the decor. For decoration, you can use large tiles, alternating in the same sequence.

Black, white and more

Black and white colors in the interior, despite the seeming routine and boring, are actually stylish and even daring. It’s not for nothing that they are often used in modern styles – high-tech, minimalism. These two colors work well with clean lines and require minimal embellishment and accessories - in fact, they can become room decorating pieces themselves.

Kitchen with black and white floor

Rooms decorated in black and white do not seem dark or too light. On the contrary, they seem to radiate a special energy, making the rooms lively, even lush. This color combination forces you to focus on the details, and therefore any decorative elements will immediately catch your eye. And, by the way, there are also disadvantages.

Black and white laminate

On a note! White is far from the warmest color. Of course, a room decorated in black and white will look bright, but still this is a rather specific combination that has certain features.

Black and white room design

Black and white colors in the interior, especially for floor decoration, are most often used in “cool” rooms. This is the kitchen, corridor, bathroom. Tile immediately comes to mind, but laminate or engineered wood flooring can also be black and white. Some people think that black and white floors are too difficult to fit into the interior, but this is far from true.

Black and white colors combine well not only with each other, but also with other colors. These can be notes of red, gray or any other shade. However, it is not recommended to use more than 3-4 colors for the main range, otherwise the room will look tasteless and tacky.

The snow-white edging of furniture in the form of a ceiling and walls with double dubbing in black and decor in gray tones looks very creative

By the way, you should not use black and white in equal proportions in the interior - this will cause irritation. However, floors with a checkerboard pattern, where both black and white are used in equal quantities, will look quite harmonious.

Laying methods

The method of laying the finishing material is of great importance. Decorators have developed many techniques.

Let's take a look at the most popular of them:

  • Chess. The classic method, in which black and white dies are laid in the form of a chessboard. It is recommended to choose this method for Baroque, Rococo, Empire, and Classicism styles. The checkerboard pattern looks great with natural wood furniture.
  • Diagonal. The same checkerboard pattern, but laid out diagonally. This method is used to visually increase the size of the room and move the walls away from one another. Ideal installation for bathrooms and washrooms.
  • Herringbone. To lay the tiles in a herringbone pattern, they must have a standard rectangular shape. Experts distinguish between combined masonry, when tiles of different colors are combined, as well as “herringbone” made from tiles of the same color.

Decoration of floors, walls, ceilings and black and white floors

Black and white flooring is ideal for the bathroom and kitchen. Therefore, special attention will be paid to these rooms in the apartment. But in fairness it is also worth saying about the bedrooms and halls. Here, black and white floors will also look quite nice if you choose the right flooring material and other finishing materials.

Idea for decorating the floor and ceiling in a black and white kitchen

On a note! If you purchase laminate in dark and light colors, and during installation of the coating alternate the lamellas or lay them in a herringbone pattern, you can get interesting patterns.

Black and white floor in the kitchen photo

In such a room, it is best to decorate the walls with thick wallpaper with a predominance of light colors. A monochromatic light finish on three walls will look good if the fourth has a large dark-colored pattern. It is best to paint the ceiling white.

It is best to use tiles in the bathroom. To make the appearance of the coating non-standard, you can experiment with the shape, size, and masonry pattern. “Zebra” looks very cool in the bathroom - in this case, stripes of black and white colors alternate with each other.

Black and white floor with applique

The black and white drawing, enclosed in a marble frame around the perimeter, looks especially interesting.

In a kitchen with a black and white floor, white furniture with a dark countertop will look good. Black and white combined headsets also look great. It is not advisable to use a completely dark one, as the room may turn out gloomy. But with good lighting, sets and tables can be black. Bright and flashy colors, even with small inclusions, are not advisable to use here.

Black and white glossy kitchen - continued in reflection

Attention! Interior items and wall decoration should not match the pattern of the black and white floor. Otherwise, it will turn out to be “screaming” bad taste. And this combination has a negative effect on a person’s emotional state, causing irritation.

How to choose a tile, see the following video.

Laying tiles

After preparing the base, you can proceed to the main stage - laying the tiles yourself.

The order of work is as follows:

  • measure the room and divide it into 4 squares using a pencil and tape measure;
  • arrange black and white floor tiles in a specific pattern. The assembled pattern will make the installation task easier;
  • try to arrange the individual parts so that you have to cut less. If necessary, cut the part using a tile cutter;
  • You should start laying out from a corner or from a window. Use the cut pieces around the edges so as not to spoil the design;
  • Next, you need to apply glue to the floor and a little to the tile itself, after mixing it according to the instructions indicated on the package. For an even layer, use a notched trowel;

Here's a spatula

  • You need to lay the rows strictly along the lines that you previously drew. This way you won’t get confused, and the coating will lie flat;
  • glue is applied only to part of the room; if you apply it to the whole room at once, it may dry out, or it may stain the surface of the material and make it inconvenient to work with;
  • Gently tap each glued tile with a rubber mallet. Special crosses should be laid between the parts to form seams. You need to use a level all the time and constantly check the evenness of the floor with it;

Main job

  • after the masonry has dried (on average after 3 days), you need to seal the seams using a sealing compound. Check each seam to ensure there is no empty space;
  • if necessary, apply a floor primer over the surface;
  • polish the finished floor with a soft sponge. Remove all excess particles of primer and mixtures.

New designer choice: white tiles with black grout

Do you have a renovation in your life and want to decorate your kitchen or backsplash with white tiles? Usually at this stage doubts arise about what color to decorate the seams, because white will quickly “fail.” One of the latest trends in decorating is white tiles with black grout: it looks stylish and is also a very practical solution.

What is grout used for?

It is important to understand that not only color is important in grout, as it can “hide” dirt. It also performs several other functions, understanding which will help you choose the right material. Among them:

  1. Protection against absorption of moisture and dirt. Even though the grout itself can absorb these substances, it protects the adhesive solution on which the tile itself is held. The wall itself is also protected, so that fungus or mold does not appear.
  2. Hiding defects. If the seam is not completely straight, or there is a small chip on the tile, then the grout can disguise it. True, this happens if it matches the tone of the tile. It turns out that the “White tiles - black grout” option requires more careful and careful laying, since all mistakes will be noticeable in contrast.
  3. Decorative. Many people think that grouting has no effect on the overall appearance of the interior. This judgment is wrong. The best way to prove this is in a practical way. See below how different the tiles look.

  4. Balancing the interior. Any tone of furniture or decoration, duplicated in grout, will look much more confident and stylish.

It turns out that the putty performs both decorative and protective functions. And it’s difficult to say which of these is more important.

Advantages and disadvantages of dark seams

To accurately determine the choice of grout color, you need to compare all the pros and cons of black joints on a white background.

AdvantagesFlaws
Looks stylish, modernNot suitable for any interior
Draws attention to the interior and to the tiles themselvesDraws attention to errors during installation
Maintains a presentable appearance much longerMay look gloomy
The design looks more original

An excellent example is the combination of light hog tiles and dark grout.

Interior use

Such a bold and contrasting combination is suitable only for modern styles, for example, urban, loft, modern and even Scandinavian. In all these design areas, it is necessary to adhere to the principles of minimalism.

This also applies to the choice of ceramic tiles. That is, it should be plain or (maximum) with a natural pattern like wood or stone. If there is an active ornament on the tile, then in combination with contrasting seams the interior will be overloaded.

This symbiosis can be used not only in the kitchen, but also in the bathroom. After all, the bathroom is also a place with frequent and rapid changes in temperature and humidity.

On the one hand, black seams in the bathroom and kitchen are what is needed, since the space between the tiles really quickly gets dirty and loses its presentable appearance. On the other hand, this way you can skip the occurrence of dangerous mold on surfaces.

In this case, it is important to take into account even the characteristics of the water in the building: if it is hard, then it is better to prefer gray mastic to black, otherwise the dried drops will be too noticeable. Therefore, the logical option, at least for a white bathroom, would be the following:

  • white grout on the walls - since little dirt gets in, but traces of drops may remain;
  • black grout on the floor - white in this case will definitely get dirty quickly, which looks very ugly.

Why not"?

In addition to the unpleasant associations with a morgue, an operating room and a hospital ward, a bathroom, a room with a white floor has the following features, which are considered its main disadvantages:

  • White shades are quite easily soiled (stains from dried soapy water, shampoo, shower gel are clearly visible),
  • The coating quickly becomes dirty and loses its original whiteness and freshness;
  • Requires constant daily care;
  • Dirty stains and limescale deposits are clearly visible;
  • Building materials from some companies, made of poor quality, may begin to turn yellow and darken over time from constant contact with moisture and steam;
  • White color is not self-sufficient. Additional decor will be required;
  • This color is cold, causing discomfort, unpleasant sensations and associations.

However, if all of the above does not frighten you, then you can safely decorate the bathroom floor in white tones. The main thing is that it harmonizes with the general background and fits into the framework of the chosen design style.

Choosing between black and gray

It seems that the difference between black and gray is small, but in fact, it is very noticeable to the eye. Which grout should I choose?

Black is used only if there are other objects of this color in the kitchen, for example, a countertop. This rule also applies to the bathroom: black seams are only welcome if the color is found in the interior, for example, on the floor.

Otherwise, there is a possibility that the masonry will begin to stand out too much and “cut” the wall or floor.

Black and white grout options for hog tiles.

Gray color is considered more neutral and multifunctional, so its duplication in the interior is not necessary. But if it is made in the form of curtains or at least a set of dishes, then the interior will instantly become more stylish.

Other color options

Have you noticed that white tile joints are rarely done in pastel colors? For example, beige, light gray, cream.

This is due to the fact that such shades with little contrast to white from a distance will simply look like dirty stripes. The kitchen will become untidy and uncomfortable.

That is why three types of grout are most often used with white tiles:

Designers allow the use of brighter colors to seal joints. But at the same time they warn that this is a bold step, and over time the seams may begin to become an eyesore. At the same time, brightness simply requires ideal masonry, as it highlights all the flaws and flaws.

Of course, the choice of a bright tone should be based on the colors that are already in the interior. At the same time, this will balance the design, give it cheerfulness and a bit of carelessness.

When choosing a dark grout for white tiles, the bias is primarily towards practicality. If aesthetics are important, then when choosing light colors for sealing joints, several nuances must be taken into account.

For example, dark grout lines always highlight the tiles, so if they have an unusual shape or are laid in an unusual way (for example, diagonally), then it is better to choose a contrasting grout.

Due to such highlighting, the practical meaning of a certain masonry is emphasized. For example, if the tile is narrow and lies vertically, the room will appear taller than it actually is. If there is no need for such effects, then you can stop at the white version.

Some owners are so categorical that they call dark seams on white tiles “dirt under their nails.” And for such, designers have found a way out - using dark blue or dark green mastic.

Such color combinations will cool the room and fill it with freshness. If you need to achieve the opposite effect - warmth, then it is better to look towards brown tones.

Disadvantages of white tiles

If we talk about the disadvantages, then yellow marks from water and various cleaning products can often form on white tiles. If there are animals in the house, then their fur on light-colored tiles will be very noticeable. White tiles are not recommended for floor finishing only if the finishing material is not pure white, but, for example, has a marble pattern.

White tiles are universal because they go well with absolutely everything. Do you want originality? You can lay out the tiles in the shape of a hexagon. Is the apartment Scandinavian style? Boar tiles are at the peak of popularity. Arabic motifs, patchwork tiles, borders, thresholds – there are a real variety of options. You can also choose small tiles, 5*20 centimeters, or large ones, for example, 20*50 centimeters. It is also worth considering: the smaller the size of the tile, the more expensive it will cost to install it.

Many designers recommend white tiles to their clients, because they understand how refreshing it is for a room. At the same time, customers often consider it non-functional because they are afraid that they will have to spend a lot of time maintaining cleanliness. There is no need to worry about this - white in practice will be easier to maintain than, for example, black or dark gray glossy tiles.

Recommendations for choosing a composition

Choosing the right grout is not easy: you need to look not only at the color scheme, but also at the composition. Based on its basis, grout is divided into several types, each of which has its own characteristics.

Cement-sandThis is a cheap and simple mixture that consists of cement and sifted sand. To strengthen such grout, PVA is often used. One of the most common options.
AlabasterPlastic and soft material before hardening. But it hardens very quickly, becoming hard. Requires work experience. The powder itself is white, but dyes can also be used
Fugue made of cement with modifying additivesThis composition is distinguished by more complex ingredients - Portland cement and special strengthening additives, thanks to which the mass becomes plastic and soft. Wide color palette
LatexA variation of the previous composition, but with special polymer additives that make the grout waterproof and more durable
EpoxyThis type of grout contains epoxy resins, which is how it got its name. This is a very durable mixture that is ideally protected from moisture, so it does not absorb water and dirt. But it will be extremely difficult for a beginner to work with it due to the high viscosity of the mixture
SilicateLiquid glass mixture is most often used for mosaics or other neat and clean joints. It can be transparent or with glitter and other particles of pigments.
FuranicThis grout is initially black. It has excellent resistance to chemicals, but it is still rarely used in everyday life

The simplest and cheapest option most often used is cement-sand grout. But it is worth paying attention to the epoxy version of the mastic, since it is the most durable, strong and does not have the habit of absorbing dirt, which means it will not become dirty. “Epoxy” is what you need for complex rooms like a kitchen or bath.

Rules for processing seams

People can apply regular grout with their own hands. But when choosing latex or epoxy materials, it is better to entrust the matter to a professional so as not to spoil the expensive product. The operating principle is as follows:

  1. Dilute the grout with water according to the instructions (if it was originally powder). Usually you need to stir the composition and wait a few minutes.
  2. Remove all dirt and excess objects from the seams. Apply the putty with a spatula (rubber) between the tiles and press in with smoothing movements.
  3. Clean the tiles from any remaining excess paste. To do this, use a damp sponge or cotton rag.
  4. Leave to dry, then check the strength of the seams and ventilate the room.

White tiles and black grout - is it worth it?

This combination of tiles and mastic can still be called new and original. If style allows, then you should not refuse such an idea - it is practical and unique. You just need to decide more precisely on the tone of the grout - black may indeed turn out to be too dark without the support of this color in the interior.

Gray, dark green and blue shades can serve as a replacement. This will make the design even more unique, which means that the housewife will enjoy such a kitchen for many years and will not waste time cleaning the seams.

Accents that highlight white tiles

In the process of decorating a bathroom, it is important to immediately decide on what should “catch the eye” - the floor, walls or ceiling, interior items. And what - no. What should be neutral, inconspicuous. It’s ideal when everything looks harmonious and has smooth transitions. But the game of contrasts also has the right to exist. If it is appropriate within the chosen design style.

You can first make the walls or ceiling white. Observe your feelings. White shades harmonize perfectly with others. It is not at all necessary to do everything in one tone.

It is enough to correctly place accents, soften the coldness, and wisely use the surrounding interior items:

  • Lamps;
  • Faucets;
  • Mirrors;
  • Rugs;
  • Towels;
  • Soap dishes;
  • Linen baskets;
  • Sink;
  • Curtains.

By carefully considering the lighting, you can add warm notes to your interior design, making it softer and more comfortable.

The bathroom should not be overloaded with decor. White color looks perfect when using the minimum necessary accessories. Everything unnecessary should be removed.

In the photo, the white bathroom floor looks amazingly beautiful. But this is when it is clean, free of soap streaks and dirt. For this to happen all the time, you need to avoid cluttering the bathroom so that nothing interferes with timely cleaning and maintaining cleanliness.

Tile

Black ceramic tiles look expensive and trendy, especially if they are matte or marbled. To prevent black tiles from “eating up” the space, it is recommended to use dark shades as color accents:

Angelina First, I had a similar problem. I made grout for tiles with photo printing. Italian species. Of course, there are many different colors at the joints of the tiles in the grout so as not to split the pattern. I took white grout and added dyes to it and grouted it millimeter by millimeter. Then I varnished it. Tiles in the bathroom. 3 years - normal flight. Yes, after I had wiped it all down, I figured out that I had to grout everything with white grout, paint where it needed to be with acrylic paints, and then also varnish it. Oops, I'm probably off topic. Do you need to paint the grout over white paint? There are acrylic paints for ceramics. They can probably be used for painting and then varnishing. You just need to choose a varnish without yellowness. And in order not to climb on the white tiles, you can try using masking tape.

The article is excellent. Thank you. Informative.

Good examples. Yes, it happens that colored grout is the “main character”. Especially when the tiles are simple and budget-friendly.
