Repairs require a lot of time and material costs. You need to not only follow your own preferences, but also special standards. Some features of the room must be taken into account during the work. Such a nuance is the threshold between the bathroom and the corridor, which is a necessary part of the room. Therefore, you should understand why it is needed and what stages the installation includes.
Threshold between the bathroom and the corridor.
Important points when choosing a threshold for a bathroom
Based on the purpose of the threshold, it is necessary to carefully select the appropriate design option. Height matters. Its value should exceed the floor in the rooms. It is recommended to further lower the floor surface in the bathroom. This will provide an area for unexpected fluid accumulation.
We choose the height of the future threshold.
How to install a concrete threshold?
The good thing about it is that it is easy to make and, if desired, decorated. Most often it is made wide enough to make it convenient to use.
Set up the threshold this way:
- The base is thoroughly cleaned, then a layer of primer is applied.
- Bolts are screwed in to the height of the future product. They will act as reinforcement.
- Install the formwork. It is made from boards of the required size and secured with spacers.
- If, after installing a concrete threshold in the door frame, it is planned to be tiled, then concrete is simply poured into the formwork. For smoother sides, first lay a layer of polyethylene on the formwork.
- After the solution is poured, wait about a day. Remove the formwork.
- For another 3-4 days, the concrete surface is moistened with water from a spray bottle. This treatment is necessary so that it does not crack over time.
Installation process
The tiles are prepared for laying. To do this, use a grinder to cut it into the required pieces. Despite the complexity of the work, the installation will turn out well. The tiles should be the same as those on the bathroom floor. Markings for cuts are first applied to it. Then they begin to prepare the glue. There are instructions on the package that should be strictly followed.
Installation of a new threshold.
It is important to prevent the formation of lumps in the composition. Therefore, the mixture is mixed in small portions, carefully.
Mix the glue thoroughly.
A notched trowel allows you to use material more economically. Therefore, with its help you need to apply glue from the back of the tile. Then she applies herself and presses. There is no need to press hard. Using a building level, you need to accurately level it horizontally. Additionally treated with a grouting compound. It is better to remove the work with a rubber spatula.
Apply the adhesive to the tiles with a notched trowel.
In addition to this option, you can install a wooden threshold. It's easy to make it with your own hands. Suitable species are pine and oak due to their hardness and reliability. There are thresholds made of plastic, but they are not durable. When using wood, leave a gap between the threshold and the door of about 5 mm for proper air circulation.
Laying a wooden threshold.
For installation, grooves should be built at the bottom of the side posts of the box, corresponding to the height of the threshold. The completed wooden blank is inserted into this hole using a hammer. Using a drill, several uniform through holes are made. Set the workpiece aside and drive in the dowels according to the marks obtained. The threshold is returned and screwed with self-tapping screws.
We fasten the threshold with self-tapping screws.
Installation is simple. You can do it yourself. You just need to first decide on the material from which the threshold will be made.

Preparing to create
Before you start creating a threshold between the bathroom and the hallway, you need to do a lot of preparation. So, first of all, you need to take care of the availability of protective equipment. In order to protect himself during the process, the construction worker must have:
- special glasses that will help prevent dust from getting into your eyes;
- gloves for working with cement and other materials;
- clothes that will reliably cover all areas of your body;
- shoes and hats, which you cannot do without during construction:
After you yourself prepare for the future event, you will need to prepare a place for the threshold. For these purposes, the old door frame, and accordingly the old threshold, must certainly be dismantled. If the above-mentioned elements have already been dismantled, you need to thoroughly clean the surface of the future working area
It is also very important to ensure that you have all the necessary tools in advance. You will need:
- a tank where you will prepare the adhesive mass;
- a device specifically designed for leveling cement screed;
- building level, which will be used to check the evenness of surfaces;
- three spatulas: regular, rubber and serrated;
- grinder, which has a special attachment for cutting tiles and porcelain stoneware;
- a puncher, with which you can remove all unnecessary fragments;
Don’t forget that you also need to prepare the finishing material. This can be done by taking measurements, after which they are transferred to porcelain tiles. It is for this purpose that you will need a previously prepared grinder.

The adhesive substance should also be prepared in advance. If you are going to make a threshold from porcelain stoneware, you will need a special mixture that will help fix the facing material quite reliably and at the same time very high quality. This seven is sold in almost all hardware stores. It must be prepared in accordance with the instructions, which must be in the packaging container (or on it). According to the instructions, the composition must be mixed with water. This must be done in a special tank that you prepared earlier. The glue must be poured into the water in small portions, while stirring, this will help make the adhesive of better quality (without lumps).
Before starting to build the threshold, check the working surface again. It must be cleaned of dirt and dust, and, of course, covered with a primer composition. This will ensure a high degree of adhesion for all building materials used.

Methods of fastening thresholds: internal and external
Of course, thresholds that have ready-made through holes are very easy and convenient to attach, but now more people choose aluminum thresholds that have hidden fastenings. They are excellent for surfaces such as laminate, cork flooring, parquet and the screw heads do not catch on socks.
All hidden fastenings are made using a special two-level system. The lower strip contains all the elements of fastening to the floor, and the upper strip snaps onto the lower one and plays the role of a decorative covering. For strength, the upper strip is still glued at the junction with the lower strip.
Handles for interior doors: how to choose and install
Main types
Thresholds for interior structures serve mainly a decorative function. They cover joints well, but do not retain heat in rooms well. They come built into the box or are sold separately. They differ in form and purpose into the following:
- Ordinary. Installs everywhere. It can be flat, rounded and profiled in different widths.
- Multi-level. Used to hide differences in height between floor coverings.
- The guillotine threshold or “smart” threshold cuts into the lower end of the canvas, which imposes certain conditions on the strength of the latter.
Depending on the material, products differ in:
- Wooden. Products made from oak and pine are popular. The first - due to strength and durability, and the second - due to low cost.
- Metal. The most common type used to cover joints is made of aluminum. It features increased wear resistance. Less commonly used are brass and stainless steel. There are single-level, multi-level and corner ones.
- Plastic. Economy option. They are distinguished by their attractive appearance and low cost, but are inferior to the first two in durability.
- Stone. These are durable, but also the most expensive types of thresholds. Installation is difficult.
- Cork. The cork expansion joint has a long service life in conditions of high humidity and temperature fluctuations. Often used in baths, saunas and swimming pools.
- Made from laminate. This type is used exclusively for joining laminate surfaces. Easy to install, beautiful in appearance, but does not tolerate changes in humidity.
