Hanging chair - what kind of beast?
Nanna Ditzel – the hanging chair owes its birth to her at the beginning of the second half of the twentieth century. Inspired by the idea of a hammock, Nanna invented a kind of cocoon chair and hung it with ropes from a beam under the ceiling. The idea quickly became very popular.
About 10 years later, another designer came up with a new version of the hanging chair, proposing to make it out of plastic in the shape of a ball.
The modern hanging chair is a cross between a swing, a hammock and a rocking chair. The seat is deep and spacious, it has the shape of a voluminous egg or ball, which allows you to sit or recline in it.
If we mean hanging chairs, they do not have support at the bottom, but are attached to the ceiling with special belts or ropes.
There is also a mobile version, equipped with a stable base with a hook on top. The chair itself is directly suspended from this hook. Such options are suitable for placement not only at home, but also on the street. If desired, they can be moved to any place.
You may be wondering how much weight this miracle can support. It is impossible to give a definite answer. It is better to check with the manufacturer when purchasing. But on average the figure fluctuates around 100 kg.
Mount for decorative ceilings
Unfortunately, it is not recommended to attach hanging chairs to decorative ceiling structures. But if you really want to become the owner of a fashionable hanging chair, you need to think about fixing its structure in advance. A threaded anchor is also suitable for fastening.
In this case, the length of the anchor is calculated taking into account the size of the air gap between the concrete slab and the ceiling structure. A special ring that is screwed into the coupling will perfectly disguise the hole and make it inconspicuous.
As you can see, the dream of having a hanging wicker or soft chair in your summer cottage or apartment is quite feasible. You can either purchase a chair or make it yourself, choose the desired type of fastening and design of the model. Believe in your strength and carry out your plans!

Armchair in the interior
The hanging bed has a unique ability to fit into any interior style:
- Luxurious furniture made from natural materials is more suitable for a classic interior;
- for Provence or country, a canvas hanging hammock looks most organic;
- the Mediterranean interior will be perfectly complemented by a white cobweb chair;
- High-tech or minimalism is, of course, an amazing cocoon or egg made of plastic. A modern room will be decorated with a structure made of chrome rods.
Original furniture can be turned into a bright accent of the interior. For this purpose, a modern model with built-in LED lighting, placed in the most visible place in the room, is more suitable than others.
An unusual product of design thought will help you settle in with maximum comfort after a hard day. You can choose the decoration of the surface of the ball as you wish and successfully bring your individual project to life.
Designers advise placing a comfortable bed in the corner of the room, closer to the seating area, next to a soft sofa or armchairs. It’s better to make a hanging chair with your own hands, in the same color palette as all the furniture.
Chair selection and placement
The depth of the egg chair is about half a meter. Ball chairs are usually 20-30 cm deeper. It must be taken into account that such designs require a lot of space and it will not fit in a small room. When determining the location of the chair, it is worth considering that there should be no obstacles on either side.
Don't forget that this is not an ordinary static piece of furniture. The design of the chair allows it to swing from side to side, therefore, there should be no obstacles around the chair.
When choosing a chair, you also need to take into account the features of the apartment’s interior. In a high-tech style room, plastic round chairs would be an excellent option. Armchairs with a floral textile bed will fit perfectly into a house furnished in Vintage style.
But wicker hanging chairs will highlight African or Tropical interior design; they are also perfect for a country house. But it’s also worth keeping in mind that not every style can get along with this modern neighbor. For example, such a chair would be difficult to imagine in a classic interior design.
Also pay attention to the features of your ceiling. Due to its design, it will not be possible to attach the chair to suspended ceilings. One of the best options is to secure it to a sturdy ceiling beam or slab.
There are also double chairs. But, if you want more than one person to enjoy swinging in a hanging chair at the same time, it is better to install several different chairs in order to properly distribute the load.

Materials for frame and base
For the frame you can use steel, copper or plastic pipes, rods, tree branches. Metal pipes, if you need to bend them into a circle, will have to be rolled on special machines, so it is better to use an old gymnastic hoop of a suitable diameter instead. The rods can be bent by first soaking them in water. Frame parts can also be made from PVC or metal-plastic pipes with a diameter of at least 32 mm.
For the base, you can use round or profiled pipes. In order for the furniture to support the weight of the person sitting, the cross-sectional size of the pipes must be at least 30 mm with a wall thickness of 3-4 mm. The base must be made very stable to prevent the chair from tipping over.
When making a frameless chair from a piece of fabric, you can put a circle of plywood inside to give the seat a comfortable shape. Of course, it needs to be covered with fabric and pillows placed on top.
From the many types of materials, you need to choose the ones most suitable for the conditions of use of the furniture. Fabric chairs, for example, are not advisable to use outdoors, since most such materials fade in the sun. Natural rattan is afraid of moisture, so it is not recommended to leave such furniture in the rain. But indoors it is better to use environmentally friendly natural materials.
Artificial rattan and plastic will withstand humidity, sun and temperature changes well.
To braid the frame, you can use the macrame technique. This is the name of the type of weaving for which textile cords, ribbons, and ropes are used.
