Bed with footboard: types and features of the footboard

How high should the bed be?

Before buying a bed for yourself or for a child, you should pay attention not only to the comfort and softness of the mattress, but also to its height.
This value is the sum of the thickness of the mattress, the length of the legs and the base of the bed. Her choice depends on the person’s height. Although there is no single standard for measurement, it is believed that the optimal height of a bed from the floor should be at the level of a person’s knees. To determine comfort, you need to sit on it, with your feet completely on the floor and your knees bent at a right angle. You also need to consider the thickness and hardness of the bed.

It is difficult for a tall person to choose this piece of furniture, since his knees on a standard bed will not be bent at a right angle, and this will place a large load on the spine. For older people, a taller option is more suitable to make it more comfortable to get up in the morning.

There are several accepted sleeping height standards in the world:

StandardHeight, cmNote
Russian, European50-60It is comfortable to get up from such a bed and comfortable to lie down in.
American70-100This option is suitable for elderly users and people with musculoskeletal diseases.
Asian (eastern)20-40Such models are often used in high-tech or minimalist style rooms.

What does the mattress consist of?

Choosing a mattress is an individual process and you should pay attention to the following components:

1. Spring block 2. Hard layer 3. Layer of volumetric fillers 4. Upholstery fabric 5. Weight load 6. Mattress service life

Pocket spring mattresses (256 springs per 1 square meter and 512 springs per bed) are preferred for teenagers, young adults, and even newlyweds. These mattresses have proven themselves amazingly as the optimal set of all components for proper sleep. They can withstand a load on a sleeping place of up to 120 kg (the difference in the weight of the spouses is up to 40 kg). The combination of natural materials and orthopedic foam maintains the thermal comfort of the sleeping place during sleep

Mattresses with a Poket 5 Zone spring block have support zones for certain parts of the body: head, neck, lumbar region, pelvic area, legs. All 512 springs per bed are located in the block in such a way that each zone has a different degree of rigidity: from elastic and hard to soft and elastic. A weightless effect is created, complete relaxation of all muscles, thereby unloading the spine. Mattresses can withstand sleeping loads of up to 140 kg . Comfort layers use exclusively natural materials that have both good ventilation characteristics and hypoallergenic properties. From this collection, each buyer will choose an individual mattress that has characteristics only for him. More than 60% of all sales come from mattresses based on the Poket 5 Zone spring block .

Mattresses based on the Multipocket spring block deserve special attention. This spring block has point elasticity and high anatomical properties. The block is based on 7-turn cylindrical springs (1024 springs per berth). The cylindrical shape of the spring is achieved by curling the spring from a smaller diameter coil at the surface (half the coil of the spring) to a larger diameter in the middle of the spring. The manufacturing technology uses high-carbon steel spring wire with the addition of titanium, 1.3 mm thick. This indicates the strength of the block. Each spring is in its own bag and works independently of the neighboring one. The weight load of mattresses in this collection is up to 160 kg per bed, the possible weight difference between sleepers is up to 60 kg. According to our sales data, the collection of these mattresses is a hit with couples.

Mattresses based on the MultiPocket 7 zone spring block belong to the “premium” category. The MultiPocket 7 zone spring block is divided into zones (hence the name “7-zone block”). The zone block is a system of springs of varying degrees of rigidity, where each zone is responsible for supporting the following parts of the body: head, shoulder, back, lumbar region, hips, legs and feet . Different degrees of rigidity are achieved by using wires of different diameters in zones - from 1.1 to 1.3 mm. This ensures the “individuality” of each zone: the load is removed from the spine, tension from the muscles and joints, and ideal conditions are created for comfortable rest and sleep. The number of springs per 1 square meter is 512 pieces (1024 per bed). The spring block is designed for both average-weight and “heavyweight” people .

Premium mattresses use natural latex, which is made with a unique laser cutting for a massage effect, and memorix material with memory effect, which has a high level of elasticity, is hypoallergenic, and is highly breathable. Thanks to this, moisture does not accumulate in the mattress, harmful bacteria do not develop, and the same temperature regime is maintained.

For healthy people, a zone mattress creates conditions for complete restoration of the musculoskeletal system after an active day's exercise. Even after just five minutes of rest on the mattress, you will feel a relaxing effect and a surge of strength. For people suffering from pain due to radiculitis, scoliosis, arthrosis, the mattress helps neutralize pain by relieving intramuscular tension.

If you prefer a dense, hard, and most importantly, inexpensive mattress , then we advise you to pay attention to springless mattresses. In our mattress catalog this is the Fjord collection.

The production of springless mattresses is based on foam material with a porous structure and excellent moisture and air exchange properties . Hypoallergenic foam material (polyurethane foam) perfectly distributes the load over the entire surface, while providing the necessary support for the spine.

Withstands loads from 100 kg to 140 kg per bed. The mattress is light in weight and is not afraid of temperature changes. Ideal for both the sofa and the garden.

Standard bed height

When choosing a bed, first of all, you need to take into account the comfort of this piece of furniture, because the quality of a night's sleep, and therefore your mood and well-being during the next day, depends on this. To determine the degree of comfort, it is not necessary to use a measuring tape; it is necessary that the person touches the floor with his feet while sitting on the edge.

Children's

The parameters of a child's bed may vary depending on the age of the child. For preschool children, the height of the sleeping place can be about 0.3 m. The older the child, the higher this value can be. For children of early school age, this parameter is usually 0.4 m.

Teenage

For a teenager from about 12 years old, it is better for the sleeping area with a mattress to be approximately 0.5 m from the floor. This can be a sofa structure, a single or single bed with additional drawers under it.

For adults (double)

Today, double versions of this furniture are available in 3 main types:

  1. With a standard height of 0.5-0.6 m (Russian, Euro beds).
  2. With a low level of up to 0.45 m (podiums).
  3. With a maximum height of 0.7 m or more (American).

The height is selected depending on the requirements of both users. For example, if one of them has problems with joints or the musculoskeletal system, you should select this option higher than the standard one, thanks to this it will be more convenient to get up after sleep.

The classic height for an adult double bed can be considered 0.5 m.

Recommendations for choosing mattresses

When choosing mattresses, the following factors are taken into account: age, weight, pain, physical activity, personal preferences.

Age

If the mattress is for a child, remember that in order to form correct posture in a growing body, orthopedic doctors recommend firmer mattresses. The younger the person, the harder the mattress is recommended for him; the older, the softer.

If you are under 27 years old, then you should make a choice in favor of a hard mattress or a medium-hard mattress for the proper formation of the muscles and spine.

For people from 27 to 50 years old, the choice should be based on personal preferences for comfort and rigidity, or on the recommendation of doctors.

Those aged 50 years and older should choose a mattress with a high degree of anatomy and moderate hardness.

Weight

People with increased body weight should take a closer look at hard mattresses, as the mattress on which such a person lies is soft. The mattress will sag in the middle and the sleeper will be in a curved position (“in a hammock”). Quite the opposite, this applies to people with low weight. They are advised to choose a soft mattress; a hard mattress will not be able to follow the curves of the spine, and accordingly the body will be in the wrong position.

From 40 to 60 kg it is recommended to choose a soft mattress.

From 60 to 90 kg is the average weight of an adult. When choosing, you should take into account age, physical activity, pain and personal preferences.

From 90 kg and more, it is recommended to choose a rigid and age-appropriate model.

Physical activity

With low physical activity, the requirements for the anatomical structure of the selected mattress are reduced. You should choose a mattress based on individual preferences, the condition of the spine and cervical spine. A softer mattress is recommended for people leading an active lifestyle.

Optimal height of a bed with a mattress from the floor

There is no clear answer to the question of what distance from the floor of the sleeping place will be optimal. The low option is good for those who toss and turn in their sleep and for most children. But keep in mind that at a short distance from the floor there is a risk of breathing dust, so you will have to take care of more thorough cleaning.

A high bed is comfortable for older people. In addition, a high bed makes it possible to use the space underneath to store excess items thanks to the presence of drawers or pull-out shelves.

The best option would be 0.4-0.6 m, taking into account the thickness of the mattress 15-20 cm.

CHOOSE YOUR DREAM BED

Let's continue talking about dream bedrooms. We already know how to draw a bedroom plan and what layout options there are, we know how to place a bed correctly and how much space is needed for passage in the room.

And today we’ll talk in detail only about beds: what they are, what materials they are made from, what parts they consist of, and why the size of the mattress is important when choosing the bed of your dreams.

The bed, after the table, is probably the most important piece of furniture in the house for me. In my life I have “slept” on sofas, so when the opportunity arose to rest exclusively in bed, I did not doubt for a second that it would be so, period!

A big dream bed with the best mattress in the world, covered with a beautiful bedspread is the dream of each of us!

Only once in my life did I come across customers who wanted to put a sofa in a separate bedroom... Imagine! How much effort did it take me to persuade them not to do this... “dear mom” - but then they said thank you /

So let's get back to the beds!

A bed (from the Greek κρεβάτι [beds]) is a piece of furniture designed for sleeping when a person is lying down. The bed is usually located in the bedroom, where it forms the basis of this functional area of the home. Wikipedia.

What are they? DIFFERENT and divide them according to the following criteria:

Firstly, in terms of functionality

The beds are all divided into special ones and for individual use. We are not interested in special ones now (for example, for hospitals) - we are only talking about household use, those for dream houses :).

sketch by Oxana Panteleeva

Secondly, according to the material

manufacturing: wood, metal, plastic, composite materials, lsp, mdf, etc...

And then we divide them by size

into single, one-and-a-half and double beds.

And as intended

: for an adult or child, for an elderly person, for people with disabilities.

There are also beds for pets, but we won’t consider them now :)))

Bunk bed height

In the case of a standard bunk bed, the following values are taken into account:

  1. From the floor to the first tier there should be 0.3-0.5 m.
  2. The distance between tiers can vary from 0.8 to 1 m.
  3. The height from the floor to the sleeping area of the second tier is, as a rule, 140-150 cm and above.
  4. There should be at least 60 cm from the sleeping area of the second tier to the ceiling, ideally this distance should be 1 meter.

The last parameter must be strictly observed, since the sitting position of the person is also taken into account. The total height of a bunk bed, up to the extreme point of the headboard, is 160-180 cm or more.

Selecting the height of a sleeping place is an individual matter. Most people use standard beds with a classic height of 50 cm from the floor. Some people like to sleep higher, while others like low models. The main thing is that using the bed is convenient and comfortable.

Base

The base together with the mattress provides proper support for the body while sleeping: even a good mattress placed on the floor can cause back pain over time.

At a minimum, the base should contain springs or a metal grid, but this option is considered outdated: it has worse orthopedic properties and there is a risk of squeaking over time. A modern solution is a frame with transverse flexible plates (lamellas): the more lamellas, the better.

Mattress composition and height

The height of the mattress is equal to the total thickness of all its internal components. The height of springless and one-sided models is usually lower than that of products with a spring block and varies from 16 cm to 20 cm. A springless mattress can be monoblock or combined - with several layers of fillers. As for models with a spring block at the base, we are talking about a height of 18-30 cm. The heights are added by layers laid on top of the spring block (the number of which may vary) and a built-in wooden base in some models.

Reference! In spring models, springs of different heights and, accordingly, stiffnesses can be used. This also affects the final height of the product.

Mattresses can be double-sided - with different types of fillers on each side. This technique allows you to combine two types of firmness in one mattress. For example: on the one hand there is a hard coating (due to coconut coir), on the other there is a softer coating (latex, polyurethane foam or memory foam). The type of materials used determines the height of the product.

Reference! Some double-sided mattresses are produced according to the winter/summer principle.

In this design, one side is considered more comfortable for use in winter - thanks to the wool layer and softer fillers. It is recommended to turn the product over to the other side in the summer. For the summer side, hygroscopic, cool fabrics, cotton fibers inside a quilted cover or a technogel layer are used.

Children's mattresses, made from the same fillings as products for adults, are much thinner. The height of children's mattresses varies from 4 cm to 15 cm.

Nice additions and non-standard

An interesting addition could be an adjustable base; it can be raised at the top to make it easier to read in bed.

The entire bed can be stored in a closet or raised to the ceiling to save space in small apartments; for this it must be provided with a special lifting mechanism, which significantly increases the cost.

As a design solution, you can choose not an ordinary rectangular bed, but a round, heart-shaped or other fancy shape. When buying one, remember the difficulties that await you: both the mattress and bed linen will have to be made to order.
