18 super ideas for storing toys in a children's room - how do you store your child's toys?

House-shaped toy cabinet

A toy cabinet in a children's room is not a child's whim, but a real necessity. Every parent who has a baby understands this. But choosing children's furniture is more difficult than choosing adult furniture, because practicality is not as important for a baby as the criterion of design and bright colors. Therefore, before going to the store, you need to carefully understand what exactly the baby needs.

Important criteria

When choosing a cabinet for a child's room, the first thing you need to pay attention to is the materials. They must be environmentally friendly and not emit toxic substances.

Practicality is not so important for a child; this is most likely the criterion of parents, because it is not for nothing that there is a joke that mothers put everything in the closet. And the child has to throw everything in its place. If a child is interested in putting toys in a closet, he will do it, but if it is a dull, adult-looking closet, then it is unlikely to attract the baby.

A multi-colored cabinet with many shelves is an excellent option for storing toys that will satisfy both the child and the parents.

The color of the furniture also matters, especially when decorating a girl's room. It is also worth choosing cabinets that can be used for more than one or two years. And it’s even better if it is modular or has the possibility of transformation.

Please note: more expensive is not always better, and a high price does not at all guarantee excellent quality. It is quite possible to find the optimal price-quality ratio.

You should not choose cabinet models with metal or glass elements, because they are quite dangerous and cold to the touch.

How to choose the right shelf

Agree, hanging shelves in the interior always look impressive. If, of course, you choose them correctly and place them in the right places where they will look good. Now, fortunately, the choice of shelves is huge and their variety is simply amazing.

A shelf is not only a useful and necessary piece of furniture, but also an excellent design element that can bring beauty to your home.

In order to make a choice, let's remember what types of shelves exist:

  • One of the most popular shelves is the wall shelf, which is attached directly to the wall;
  • Also popular is a corner shelf that is placed between two walls. This allows you to save space in the room;
  • Floor shelves that are placed on the floor are also very effective. And if they are also on wheels, then at the right time they can be moved, removed or rearranged;
  • No less popular are hanging shelves, which are attached to the wall or ceiling using a variety of chains, cables, and belts.
  • Folding shelves are also a great way to save space, as they can be folded down when needed.
  • The shelf-table, the name speaks for itself, can take two forms: the table itself and the shelf. This is a great option for a small room.
  • If the size of your room allows you to use more space, then shelving is perfect here.

Yes, as you can see, the variety of shelves is great, and there are quite a lot of them today. All you have to do is decide on the type of construction. The main thing is not to clutter the entire room with shelves. They should go well with the overall look of the room in which you plan to hang them.

If you need shelving to store important things: books, documents, photographs, then try to make them stable and strong. Especially if they are intended for children.

In this case, the shelves should not be placed too low, since children are very active and mobile. Also, don't opt for glass shelves. And their corners should not be sharp.

As for choosing shelves for the living room. Here you can give free rein to your imagination. Tetris shelves, shelves of unusual shapes, spiral shelves, frame shelves will look good here. In the bedroom you can get by with ordinary classic shelves. They will look most impressive above the bed, where you can place family photos.

It will be better for the kitchen if the material from which the shelf is made matches the material of the countertop. This will give the kitchen its own specific style and elegance.

What should you store?

Only those who don’t have children think that all toys are a homogeneous mass. Everything a child plays with can be divided into groups according to which their storage can be organized.

Examples:

  • Books. They are conveniently stored on hanging shelves or on the top shelf of a closet. A good solution for a sling shelf.

Open shelves in a children's interior are suitable for storing books, decor, and even children's ballet shoes.

  • Stuffed Toys. These are far from dust collectors. They are convenient to store in large boxes, preferably transparent.

In the chest of drawers you can store not only toys, but also necessary things for the child

  • Materials for creativity. All sorts of paints, markers, pencils, albums, etc. They need a separate place in the closet, ideally medium-sized drawers or open shelves so that the child has access to them.

Cabinets with many drawers are a great option for a creative corner in a children's room

  • Constructors, puzzles. For them, you can use wicker baskets and containers, or drawers. It is advisable to sort the puzzles into boxes.
  • Bath toys. It is better to keep them not with all the toys, but in the bathroom in a special net or basin.

Basic rules and tips for organizing storage

Cleaning up your baby's room is easy. The main thing is to do this systematically. First of all, you need to take into account the age of your son or daughter:

  1. Up to 2 years. Toys are given to small children by their mother. There are usually few of them, and one box is enough to accommodate them.
  2. From 2 to 5 years. During this period, the collection of toys becomes very large; one box is not enough. It is worth taking care of shelves, cabinets and drawers.
  3. From 5 to 10 years. A lot of things accumulate, their variety increases, and their arrangement will require sorting. However, as the child grows up, his interest in games gradually disappears.

When organizing a storage system, you should follow the following rules:

  1. Each toy should have a specific place. You should use your own example to teach your child to put things where they belong.
  2. The most favorite models, which the baby often plays with, should be placed at eye level.
  3. It is better not to store broken products that cannot be repaired; they are usually thrown away.
  4. Rattles, rubber rings, and other items that the child has outgrown can be given to friends or left for younger generations, out of sight.
  5. The storage location is usually chosen near the playing area.
  6. Items must be placed so that they can be seen, and the baby should be able to get the model he likes without any problems.
  7. As the child develops and learns to read, boxes and containers can be labeled and labeled.
  8. When the collection becomes very large and varied, all products need to be sorted. For small items, it is recommended to select small boxes and containers.

Particular attention should be paid to safety. All racks, hanging shelves, cabinets must be well secured. Furniture should be chosen without sharp corners, only paints that are harmless to health should be used for painting, and cleanliness should be maintained.

Sorting toys by activity

Systematization can be done in different ways. The simplest one is to reduce the number of items. The disadvantage of this approach is that when the child remembers some model, he will have to look for it among the collected things. A more rational approach is to sort all products into categories and arrange them correctly on shelves, racks and drawers. You can sort items as follows:

  1. We collect all the toys in one place.
  2. We throw away broken copies that cannot be repaired.
  3. We break down and organize things into categories:
  • small;
  • puzzles;
  • outdoor (buckets, spatulas, molds, balls);
  • game sets (Lego, construction sets, cubes);
  • models for games (board, card);
  • soft goods;
  • large-sized.
  1. Placement on shelves, drawers:
  • We place the most beloved and popular ones, which the baby can play with independently, at eye level so that he can easily reach them.
  • We put small puzzles, construction sets, plasticine, which the child needs help to play with, into containers, small drawers, and put them higher so that he cannot reach them.
  • We allocate a separate place for outdoor, soft, large items.
  • Educational kits should be left in plain sight.

Labeling of storage locations

Regardless of the chosen storage method, be it a cabinet, shelves, walls, racks or boxes, you can separately consider a labeling system. For very young children who cannot read, color design is suitable. It will be easier for the child to remember the place where this or that object should lie. For example, you can use a blue container for soft toys, and a red one for cubes.

For marking, you can also use various labels, stickers with images of flowers, favorite cartoon characters, and other thematic pictures. This will greatly simplify the process of teaching your child to be tidy, and cleaning will turn into an exciting activity. Having memorized a certain drawing, the child will be able to find the necessary thing for the game without much effort.

Older children who have learned to read and write can be asked to label shelves and drawers themselves, draw letters using a stencil, decorate them, and make appliqué.

Storage features for boys and girls

The choice of a cabinet for storing toys in a children's room depends on the gender of the child, because even the toys that will be stored are different. For girls it’s dolls and all sorts of girly little things, for boys it’s cars and all sorts of equipment. There are constructors and educational toys for both, books and puzzles.

Cabinets for storing things in a girl's children's room

For boys, the closet should be as functional and practical as possible. Such a cabinet can be used as storage for construction toys, cars, and other important boy things. In this case, it is worth considering the option of a rack with many levels; the closet should have many shelves and compartments, and open ones.

There should be tenderness in a girls' room, and it simply must be confirmed in the furniture. The cabinet should be made in light colors; decorative furniture handles and relief elements will look great.

Please note: the more openwork there is in children's furniture for girls, the more your little princess will like it.

Where to place

When choosing a place where the storage system for children's toys will be installed, you need to take into account the parameters of the room. In long and narrow rooms it is convenient to use corner models. These cabinets can take up free space in the corners. The most suitable size option can be made to order.

Free-standing models are placed near the table, so the work area can be separated from the sleeping area. An interesting solution would be to install modular systems around a doorway, window or baby's crib. If the model has a mirrored facade, then when placed on the sunny side, you can add light to the room.

If preference is given to built-in models, then they can be mounted along a narrow wall of the room or in niches. When a loft bed or a furniture block with a bed and a table is chosen to decorate a children's room, the toy storage is located in its lower part.

A toy storage system must be in place in the nursery, otherwise the toys will create a mess. The most important criterion for choosing a model is safety of use. The piece of furniture should fit harmoniously into the interior of the room and be liked by the baby.

Materials

Before choosing one or another toy cabinet for the children's room (see photo), you need to consider what material it is made of. There are these options:

  • Chipboard. Such cabinets are cheap, but if you have the budget, it’s still better to take a closer look at another option. The key disadvantage of such cabinets is the presence of formaldehyde in the composition. In modern chipboards their number is reduced to a minimum, but still without them it will not be possible to keep a chipboard in a compartment.

Please note: if there is no opportunity to buy a more expensive cabinet, then you should carefully consider the chipboard category. You need one that is allowed to be used indoors; such cabinets have a reduced level of formaldehyde.

  • MDF. A good alternative to chipboard. However, the price is only slightly higher. This material allows you to make furniture, including cabinets, of fancy shapes, since this version of the board is easy to process and can be easily colored.

  • Tree. An excellent solution for a closet, but also the most expensive. Environmental friendliness, durability and quality of workmanship. You can save a little here too by choosing a cabinet made of inexpensive wood.
  • Plastic. There are cabinets made of plastic, but not very many. They are lightweight, which means that a child can easily turn them over, which is not very good, but at the same time he can rearrange his room himself. An important criterion is the quality of the plastic - this is where the rule applies - the more expensive, the better.
  • Rattan, wicker, bamboo. Cabinets are not made from these materials, but some models have wicker drawers, for example, in open shelving. This is both a cabinet and a rack. Such furniture can be used for quite a long time.

Wicker boxes in open shelving

Please note: pine and birch do not like moisture and temperature changes; over time, cracks may appear on such a cabinet.

How to make a shelf out of a box

I thought of this a couple of months ago. Having made five or six such racks, I decided to share a simple idea with you. I'll warn you - the photo is of poor quality. The camera is broken, I take a photo on my phone, and no matter how you look at it, it turns out bad. But to convey your idea to you, the quality of the photo is not the main thing. For work I take: - a box of the required size - glue like Moment Crystal or Titan - a stationery knife - scissors - a ruler - a pencil - thick cardboard. - beautiful paper for the back wall (if necessary) - clothespins (they are not in the photo, but they will appear in the process)

I have a box of summer shoes. Its original height is 10 cm. The depth will be too great for a doll rack. Therefore, I first cut the edge of the box with a stationery knife to 4 cm.

You can take different boxes. Here's an example: - a box from Fix Price for 55 rubles (as many as two shelves from 1 box - from the bottom and from the lid). You may not need beautiful paper for the back wall if you find a suitable design for yourself.

- a box of something. In my case it was ashtrays. I joined two boxes together to make larger shelving units. Option 1 - boxes are glued lengthwise

(here I have already partially filled the rack). Option 2 - boxes are glued along the width

If you have several boxes, take a closer look, maybe they won’t turn out to be two shelves, but one big one? But it's up to you to decide.

Let's return to the description of the process, where 1 box is used. To start, I cut a sheet of pretty paper to the right size to cover the back of the shelving unit. If you already have beautiful boxes, skip this step.

Next, I cut out the required number of shelves from thick cardboard - I have three. But here it’s up to you to decide how many there will be. And then I try on different layout options.

Once I find what I need, I draw the markings using a ruler. Next I take clothespins.

I applied glue to 3 sides of the shelf and glued it according to the markings. I attach clothespins on both sides so that the shelf does not fall during drying.

This is how I glue all the shelves.

Next, I put the rack to dry.

So it stands for about an hour, there is no point in waiting until the glue dries completely. The main thing is that it grabs. I remove the clothespins. I turn the rack upside down. And I fill the shelves with plenty of glue, for reliability. The glue here becomes a support-mount for the shelf.

But then leave it until completely dry. I usually put it away for a couple of days until I feel like somehow decorating the rack with small items.

The idea is a little complicated, but it’s easier than making a rack from scratch - cutting out the necessary pieces for the sides, back wall, etc. I think someone will find my experience useful.

Important criteria for a toy storage facility

The place of refuge for toys must meet the following criteria:

  1. Separation into containers and boxes. It is not difficult to restore order in such a system, neither for you nor for the child. Cleaning can be done quickly.
  2. Cabinet height. Those things that the child uses constantly need to be within the child’s field of view and access. The cabinet should not be very high, then you will not need to give the child what he needs over and over again.
  3. Furniture safety. Almost all furniture is quite heavy, so it needs to be fixed to the wall. This will prevent the child from knocking the cabinet over on himself.
  4. Easy to use. All containers and surfaces must be washed thoroughly, because this will definitely be needed during operation.

Please note: you need to choose any furniture together with your child; if he is still small, then be guided by his preferences, and not your own.

A combination of several types of cabinets in the nursery: open shelves, chest of drawers, hanging cabinets in the shape of houses

What should you pay attention to?

Be sure to involve your child while cleaning or rearranging. Consult and listen - what toys and things he needs in the access area, and what can be put away.

It is logical that cars and dolls should be stored on the lower shelves (preferably in drawers), and figurines or cups should be placed higher.

Home organization experts (there are some) emphasize the need to store each category of things in a separate place. For example, children's books should only be in the nursery, and then you will know exactly where and what is.

And yet, before you put things in order, carefully weigh the need for each thing. Broken toys should be thrown away, as should clothes that the child will no longer wear.

Design

The design and the presence of certain elements largely depend on the gender of the child. For a girl, a wardrobe that reaches the ceiling would be a good option. Please note that the facade should be smooth, this will make it easier to remove stickers from it, which will definitely be stuck on by a child.

Wardrobe in the shape of a castle for a girl's room

A mirror is a must have in a girl’s room. But what if the baby is still very tiny, the mirror creates a danger for her. If you choose a wardrobe, it is worth making one of its facades full-length mirror, then another headache in adolescence will be avoided. The color palette is pink, lilac, beige shades.

Please note: you should not decorate the room with pink wallpaper, the baby will outgrow it quite quickly, it is better to make a universal decoration.

When choosing the design of a children's closet for clothes and toys, a boy needs to take into account his preferences and the general style of the room. If the boy is under 3 years old, then the closet should be safe, bright, and interesting for the child.

Growing up (3-5 years old), the boy begins to show individuality, curiosity, and mobility. At this age, a cabinet with a stylized facade, for example, with a geographical map, is suitable.

The wigwam is perfect for an inquisitive little sneaky boy

At the age of 7 years and older, it is necessary to provide clear zoning in the room, including a separate work area. The ideal solution would be a built-in or corner cabinet, these help save space.

The older, the more

  • With a child under one year old everything is simple. Most often, the baby receives his supplies from his mother’s hands, and they are given there too. In addition, as a rule, the baby’s play space is limited to the playpen or the floor in the room. Therefore, at this age there are not many toys, and they are in relative order.
  • When the baby turns two years old, there are many more toys. And the child no longer plays only in the playpen or in his room. Therefore, at this age it is worth thinking about how to make sure that the mother does not collect toys all over the apartment at the end of the day, and begin to teach the child to have order.
  • By the age of five, a child has even more things. At this age, the child is already beginning to understand that all his toys, books, notebooks and clothes are in certain places, which means that they can be taken from there and put there too.
  • From the age of ten, a child already cleans his own room. But in order for him to know what to put away and where, it is necessary to clearly organize the organization of toy storage.

Tip: get rid of unnecessary toys. As your baby grows, the toys he once played with become too old for him and he loses interest in them. Such things can be sold or donated. And in the nursery there will be more free space.

Various storage systems

You shouldn’t limit yourself to just cabinets. You can use the following toy storage systems.

Rack

An open shelving unit and large drawers for it are perfect for a child's room. They can be plastic or wicker. The most important thing is that they can be easily pulled out and pushed in.

On open shelves it is convenient to place cars for boys and dishes for girls. This way everything will be in sight, which means the baby will be able to get to everything he needs. A whimsical form of shelving and stylization of your favorite cartoons is welcome.

And not simple, but playful. A garage-style cabinet for storing cars, for example, will definitely appeal to your child. Just like the doll's house. Moreover, this cabinet is not only a storage system, but also a toy - 2 in 1.

Game tables

Often, manufacturers of children's furniture provide the possibility of multifunctionality, which means that such a table will have drawers, containers, and storage modules.

Please note: if such a table has wheels, it will be an excellent opportunity to provide personal space at your discretion.

Game containers

Drawers in furniture

Dresser

This is one of the most convenient places to store children's toys. You can store board games and creativity kits in it. When choosing this furniture, you should take a closer look at how easily the drawers can be pulled out, and they should be small enough to suit the child’s height. The more compartments in the chest of drawers, the better.

Types of toy storage systems in the closet

It is important to properly organize the storage system so that it is convenient for the child and his parents. In this case, much depends on the design of the selected furniture.

Shelves for toys

A rack with shelves is considered the optimal solution, starting from the first year of a baby’s life. At first, most of the space will be taken up by baby clothes, diapers, and hygiene products. At this time, toys are allocated a small area. As you grow older, the picture changes dramatically.

A tall rack with square compartments can be placed horizontally so that its height corresponds to the height of the child. This will allow the baby to get and put away the toys himself. Over time, the furniture is installed vertically, and a second rack can be placed in the free space. The design of modules of different heights resembles a staircase. With its help you can reach the upper shelves. But if such use is planned, it is necessary to ensure that the furniture is securely fastened to the wall.

A toy cabinet with pull-out shelves is a very convenient option. After playing, the child will quickly remove the entire surface inside the furniture, and the next day he will continue his activity. For safety, the mechanism must be equipped with a stopper.

If the distance between the shelves is too large, you can cut grooves in the side walls. Boxes made of metal or plastic with rigid ribs are inserted into them.

Pull-out boxes for storing toys

Pull-out boxes are another storage option. Plastic, fabric, wood and other materials are used to make them. Each container must be accompanied by an inscription or drawing that reflects the essence of the contents. Multi-colored boxes will look interesting. This technique will enliven the interior of the nursery.

Boxes

The free space under the crib should be equipped with drawers. Any child will love this idea. They have a large volume, so it is better to separate them with partitions or using rectangular boxes of suitable size.

Hinged pockets on cabinet doors

It is better to place some items that are constantly used in special pockets made of fabric or durable plastic film. It’s good when they have a rigid base (for example: made of plywood). This will allow the entire system to maintain the required shape.

They can be mounted on a cabinet, wall or near a desktop. You won’t be able to hide large toys in pockets, but creative supplies in such storage will always be at hand.

Book storage

Children always have a lot of books, as well as toys, so it’s worth providing a separate closet for storing books in the children’s room. Let it be small, but it will be easier for the child to figure out what to store where.

A bookcase, like all furniture in a nursery, should be selected in accordance with its age. There are several good options:

  • Hanging shelf. Moreover, it can be quite “adult” in size, just hang it not at the usual height, but ten centimeters above the floor. As the child gets older, you can raise the shelf higher.

Hanging shelf for books in a children's room

  • Wardrobe with one door, lockable. It should have 5-6 shelves of standard height. Toys can be stored on the bottom ones, and the child should have unlimited access to them; books can be placed on top.
  • Corner shelf. It helps to rationally use all the space in the house.
  • Combined cabinets. They can combine open shelves and doors, drawers and stationary shelves, and other options that will be convenient for the child.

Original and unusual ideas for storing toys

You can organize your toy storage system in different ways. For these purposes, select a separate corner in the nursery, use the wall, the space under or above the bed. If you place your existing things correctly, then even in a small room there will be enough free space. For clarity, let's look at several original ideas for the arrangement of various items for games.

Spacious shelving with open shelves

A rack can be an excellent alternative for storing toys. It takes up little space while saving space. You can place it along the wall or in a corner. Its main advantage is the presence of open shelves, which provides quick access to the things located on them. For children's rooms, it is necessary to choose models with rounded corners, and during installation, special attention is paid to the reliability of fastening.

If there are few toys, then each of them can be placed on a separate shelf. It is better to place a large volume in boxes, baskets, containers, and fill the shelves with them. In the central part, located at eye level, it is recommended to place the most favorite products, on top - rarely used ones, as well as structures consisting of small elements. A separate place can be allocated for your favorite books.

Options for shelving designed in the shape of a house look very interesting. Any father can make the design with his own hands. Any girl will like it and can place her dolls on shelves. It is also suitable for boys. Having imagined that each separate section is a garage, they will be happy to return their cars to their place after the game.

Bright and stylish baskets

Beautiful baskets in which kids will put their toys can be purchased in an online store or made yourself. To organize storage you will need several baskets. It is desirable that they be of different sizes and colors. This will help sort toys into categories and teach children order. It will be much easier for them to navigate their collection; they will be able to quickly find the item they need.

All baskets differ from each other in material and manufacturing method. There are fabric, wicker, and plastic options. When choosing the last of these types, special attention should be paid to the quality of the plastic. It shouldn't smell. If it has a smell, it means that harmful plasticizers were used in its production; it is better to discard such products immediately.

You can place baskets in a variety of places. Fabric models can be hung on the wall or installed on the floor, allocating a separate corner for them. Wicker and plastic options are best placed on shelves, placed on a closet, or hidden under the bed. Needlewomen will be able to save on purchasing ready-made products, sew stylish and original designs with their own hands, and make interesting decor.

Wall pockets

Pockets are made from different materials. For work, you can use polyethylene, cardboard, plastic, but fabric options are most common. There are many different types of organizers that differ in shape, color, and decorative design. While the child is small and has not learned to walk, the product can be hung on the walls of the crib, and rattles, diapers, and napkins can be placed in it.

The main advantage of wall pockets is that you can sew them yourself without any problems. They are used not only for storage, but also as an independent toy, educational aid, for example, they sew pockets with letters of the alphabet or numbers on the canvas. The main disadvantage of the design is that bulky toys cannot be placed.

Cuciner bags for toys

Bright bags can be of any shape and size. They are convenient for storing small and medium-sized toys. Thanks to the dense walls and special frame, they are easy to fold and take out. When folded, cuciner bags do not take up much space.

A bag is the safest option for storing small items. It is made from natural fabrics, without the use of harmful dyes. Models can be open or with a Velcro lid. The device is almost impossible to damage. A bag filled with soft toys can be used as a comfortable chair. It is easy to clean and wash.

Variety of boxes

The child will always participate in the process of cleaning up toys if he is properly engaged. Any kid will definitely be interested in colorful storage boxes. They can be made from various materials and have bizarre shapes.

When choosing an option, you need to understand that the child is not interested in a complex shape and unnecessary decor. The simpler the toy device, the better. Child psychologists recommend keeping play items within the child's sight and reach. Plastic transparent containers and mesh boxes are suitable for storage. When purchasing or making your own toy box, consider the following factors:

  • Form. The usual option is a cubic, cylindrical solution. Can be supplemented with legs or wheels;
  • Size. The dimensions of the box must be selected according to the child’s age, taking into account physical development and growth;
  • Color. Bright, but not irritating shades are suitable, for example, green, orange, blue, pink. It is better not to paint toy boxes red, black, or gray;
  • Availability of decor. The sides and lid can be decorated with funny pictures and embroidery. These can be cartoon characters, cars, transformers, animals.

Armchairs, poufs and a bench with a hiding place

Multifunctional storage items can be used for their intended purpose and as a hiding place for toys. The opening system can be anything. The top cover of ottomans and benches is removed; the lower part of such a chair is often equipped with a drawer and wheels.

There are many models with different designs. Upholstered furniture for a nursery with storage space for small items can be made of wood or cardboard. The second option is designed for light weight, so it can be used up to a certain age.

Closed storage facilities have significant advantages over other options. Multifunctional benches and armchairs can replace monotonous chairs and are arranged compactly. With their help you can successfully unload space.
