The appearance of a child in the apartment leads to the need to combine two functional areas in one room. How to decorate the interior correctly and what to consider? For a very small child, a small bed and changing table are enough. In addition to a sleeping place, a preschool-age child will need space for his favorite toys, a table for drawing and studying.
Children do not need much space, so the nursery is often combined with the living room.
Living room-children's room: room design options (selection of photos)
Below we will tell you how best to decorate the space in the living room-children’s room, based on the area:
On an area of 20 sq. meters
If you need to furnish a children's living room with an area of 20 square meters, physical separation is possible in such a spacious room. You can delimit space using columns, beams, screens, arches, curtains. Such solutions help to clearly divide the area, which will be convenient for both children and adults. You can stylishly decorate your room if you choose the right interior items.
For families with small children living in a two-room apartment, a combined children's living room is an excellent layout option.
To divide a spacious room into a living room and a children's room, you need to think through the design in advance. It is important to consider the layout, your needs, style and color scheme. Even when delimiting space with an arch or column, it is necessary that the design of each zone have similar elements. You should not only divide the room, but also connect it and make it harmonious.
If you have a hall with an area of 20 square meters, you can choose zoning methods.
On an area of 15-18 sq. meters
A living room and a children's room in one room with an area of 15-18 square meters are created through a not too obvious division of zones. This is done through the color of the finish, lighting, and furniture. In the living room, you can have slightly dim lighting, while for the child you will need to create bright lighting. In a nursery, a non-standard design is acceptable, then the child will feel comfortable and have a sense of personal space. The design of the living room can be kept discreet.
To make such a room beautiful and as comfortable as possible, you need to think about its furnishings in advance.
Style solutions in living rooms and children's rooms
If you need to combine a nursery and a living room in one room, the main problem becomes dividing the room when there is no free space. Few people think about the style and correct color scheme of the space.
Furniture and color
First you need to decide on the interior of the room. We have already discussed in detail what kind of environment should be in the nursery. What is needed in a recreation area for the whole family? The most important things:
- wall (slide);
- soft comfortable furniture;
- small table;
- a cabinet (chest of drawers) or a place in the wall for a TV.
It is better to remove bulky things: trellises, ottomans, sofas and other items. To combine the living room with the nursery, you need to free up space.
Choose furniture in contrasting colors: dark for the living room, light for the nursery.
Style
When choosing a style, you can also play with contrasts. The classic living room will stand out if the children's room is decorated in high-tech style. Provence or country harmonize well with exotic Japanese style. The luxury of baroque will look unusual next to eclecticism.
To make an informed choice, you need to carefully study various catalogs, which present combinations of style solutions from fashion designers for living rooms and children's rooms. The photo shows a children's room and a living room in the same room in different styles.
Zoning without the use of dividing structures
Zoning a room into a nursery and a living room is possible without the use of complex partitions. If you own a small space, there are decent solutions that you can use.
To create a successful design project for such a combined room, it is important to keep in mind the features of your room - the footage and layout of the room.
Competent zoning
The division of the room space is thought out in advance. The problem is easily solved when the room has the shape of an elongated rectangle. Then it is divided exactly in half, into two squares. In one, the one that is closer to the window, there is a children's room, and in the one that is closer to the front door, there is a living room. This distribution of functions is not accidental.
The easiest way to organize two different zones in a rectangular room is Source avatars.mds.yandex.net
The window gives in a lot of light, and there is a battery next to it. The temperature here is comfortable both in winter and summer. This part is easier to ventilate. It is undesirable to place a children's corner near the front door for various reasons: firstly, there are always drafts, and secondly, the children's room will turn out to be a walk-through room, which means adults will interfere with the baby's rest.

When a room is divided into two zones for children and adults according to the principle of equal division of space, one part is separated from the other by various options.
The easiest way is to nail the ceiling cornice exactly in the middle of the room and hang the curtains. Textiles perfectly complement any interior, decorate it, and help completely isolate sleeping children from adults. But the material does not prevent the penetration of noise, so it will be difficult to place children under a working TV.

When the identified problem is acute, it makes sense to install sliding doors. They can be part of a light plasterboard partition or become a separate structure (then the entire opening is glazed). In any case, such a solution fits perfectly into any stylistic concept.

The doors isolate the space well, children can sleep peacefully, and they will not be disturbed by the sound from the TV. Such a partition can be made from any materials: plywood, wood, chipboard, MDF, glass. In the latter case, on the children's side, the sliding doors are still covered with textiles. The light in the living room at night does not disturb the child; during the day, open curtains allow natural light into the living room.

Cabinets and shelving, closed or open, wooden or plasterboard, metal or rubber, complement the interior, provide a spacious storage system, and form accents that favorably emphasize the style of the living space. By installing them, you can save space.

There are models on sale that hide full-sized beds. When a child is alone and needs somewhere to play, somewhere to prepare homework, buying such furniture will provide great opportunities. Such a children's room, combined with a living room, will have a larger area.

If the child is still too small, a beautiful screen will allow you to protect his crib and changing table. It folds easily and unfolds easily. When folded, it takes up little space and is easy to hide behind the sofa.

Layout of rooms with complex shapes
It is difficult to zoning a room into a children's and an adult's room when the room is shaped like a square or a long narrow trailer. In this case, you need to look for opportunities for convenient arrangement of different furniture. Often such rooms have niches. It is the best place to install an attic bed, which combines a sleeping area and a work surface. It will be possible to organize a play space next to it.

The presence of a balcony or loggia provides an ideal place to organize a children's room. We insulate the room, make heated floors, organize good lighting and make full use of the additional meters. The main thing here is to take care of safety and equip all windows with fittings that have a locking mechanism.

It is difficult to divide a small square room in half; here the zoning of a room into a nursery and a living room is done mainly using:
- color separation - walls and ceilings are painted in different colors, different materials are used to decorate the floor;
- various finishes - the walls in the nursery are painted by hand, in the living room they are covered with wallpaper;
- lighting - spotlights form a visual boundary, the children's area is illuminated brighter, lamps, floor lamps and sconces are chosen for the living room, emitting muted diffused light;
- multi-level ceilings - their tiers define the upper contours of two completely different zones;
- podium – you can store a pull-out bed in it, place storage drawers, and organize space for a child’s life on it.
There is furniture on sale today that folds and unfolds. It allows you to use every free corner.

Zoning with furniture
Interested in how to divide a children's room into two zones using furniture? For this you can use:
- armchair or sofa;
- wardrobe;
- rack;
- study corner.
For schoolchildren, it is necessary to properly equip not only a sleeping place, but also a comfortable student corner.
Such zoning is attractive because there is no need for repairs, and the furniture can be used with double benefit. However, even when using a large closet, the zoning of the nursery and living room will be only partial, so the best option would be to combine this method with installing a door or curtain.
It is especially worthwhile to think carefully and competently about dividing the living room into these zones if we are talking about a small one-room apartment.
Redevelopment
The total living area can be planned in different ways. If it is possible to eliminate or install room partitions, the possibility of physical redevelopment of the home also arises.
How to combine a living room and a nursery in this case? There aren't many options:
- If a storage room or hallway adjoins the living room, it makes sense to remove such a partition by combining the rooms. In this case, the hallway area is reduced to a minimum, but the total area of the living room increases;
- combining a living room and a children's room can be achieved by reducing the size of the kitchen. If the latter is separated from the room by a partition, it can be removed by combining the living room with the kitchen area and thereby increasing the area of the children's room;
- During the renovation of the living room, you can insulate and equip the loggia, turning it into part of the nursery. At the same time, the balcony block is removed, the opening widens, and the loggia turns into a bay window.
You can place 2 zones in a common room in different ways. It is worth considering that as the child ages, he needs more and more space.
Color zoning
The color division of the area consists of choosing finishing materials that differ in color. Furniture also has a different shade in this situation. Dividing the room into different colors will help mark zonal boundaries.
In this case, it is better to use curtains. They will not visually reduce the space; in addition, they can always be moved apart.
Basic Rules
When zoning the living room (including in cases where the hall is combined with a kitchen), the following must be taken into account:
- as the child develops, his interests change, and therefore it is necessary to provide for the possibility of transforming the room;
- It is better to organize a children’s area near a window, where more natural light penetrates;
- You cannot install children's beds or place toys near doors;
- the child's area should not be a walk-through area.
It is also recommended, if possible, to isolate the children's area from the rest of the room as much as possible. This will allow the child to do his own thing without being distracted by his parents . Due to the fact that zoning is mainly carried out in small-sized (one-room apartments), it is recommended to install functional (transformable) furniture in the room, which takes up little free space. In particular, large cabinets or walls should not be installed in such rooms.
Zoning with lighting
Creating a living room interior with a children's area is an interesting process that allows you to realize exclusive ideas with the help of light. The most important thing is to ensure high quality and original lighting that will not have a negative impact on the baby’s condition. It is important to correctly combine functionality and originality of forms.
For a school-age child, it is important to organize a workplace.
Bedroom zoning
There are many options for thoughtful and aesthetic zoning of space.
The choice largely depends on the size of the bedroom, the shape and location of natural light sources.
The most popular solutions for this layout are:
Zoning using a partition
You can use stationary structures; they are made of plasterboard, glass blocks, metal, and wood. Sometimes sliding options turn out to be a more practical solution: glass or plastic sliding doors.
Zoning using a partition
Shelving as a way of zoning
If the area does not allow for the construction of a full-fledged partition, then you can consider the option of zoning using a rack. The advantages of this method are ease of installation and practicality (after all, a rack is an additional place for storing things). The shelving unit also does not block natural light, so it can be installed in a room of any shape.
A rack with shelves for storing things can also serve as a divider.
Zoning using curtains
This method is usually used in small spaces. It allows you to separate a small part of the space, for example, a corner for a crib and changing table. This option looks light and does not overload the interior.

Zoning with lighting
Local lighting using LED lighting, the use of pendant lamps in certain areas, installation of floor lamps - the options may be different. This method of zoning looks very impressive.

Color zoning
The adult and children's parts of the room can be designated with a separate color scheme. But it is still desirable that the shades echo each other, because the room remains a single space. This solution is suitable for a bedroom of any size, the main thing here is a sense of style.
Zoning with furniture
This method is suitable for small rooms when a separate partition takes up too much space and there are not enough square meters. For zoning, cabinets, chests of drawers, and cabinets are used - this is a practical solution for convenient storage of things.
Interior of a bedroom combined with a children's room
Other zoning options
To combine a room, you need to evaluate the possibilities. If the living room combined with the nursery is small in size, you will not be able to arrange two full-fledged rooms. You will need to select a children's corner with a small amount of furniture.
Do not forget that in the area where the schoolchild or baby will sleep, there should not be too bright and intrusive light.
How to divide zones
To divide the space of a room into separate zones, various designs and techniques are used. This way you can increase the usable space and make it more functional. In one room you have to create 2 rooms that will harmoniously combine with each other. There are various ideas for zoning a room.
Plasterboard partition
Drywall is a malleable material that makes it possible to experiment with shape: arches, decorative openings, niches - all these elements can be used as shelves, decorated with paintings, stained glass, mirror surfaces, installed LEDs in them, etc.
A plasterboard niche in a bedroom combined with a nursery can be used as a base for a plasma TV or false fireplace.
Screen
A screen is a beautiful and affordable way to zone a room into a bedroom and a nursery. It can be made independently from available materials:
- cardboard;
- wooden rails;
- pieces of fabric;
- pendants;
- wallpaper;
- Fiberboard.
They are lightweight and can be used as decorative partitions in rented apartments, as well as permanent housing. Thanks to their mobility, they can be easily folded and moved from place to place. If necessary, they can be removed. In addition, they add charm and sophistication to the interior. They are also used as a background for photographs or drawings.
Rack
Racks have decorative properties and functionality. They can be of the following types:
- plastic;
- wooden;
- metal;
- plasterboard;
- plywood;
- Fiberboard.
They will complement the interior and contribute to the penetration of daylight into all corners of the room. A good technique is to combine open and closed shelves and drawers. On the rack you can place:
- home library;
- toys;
- textbooks;
- souvenirs;
- figurines;
- awards;
- photos;
- technology;
- indoor plants and much more.
Placing a plastic aquarium will be effective, since a glass one can be broken if a ball or other object hits it during a child’s game.
Curtain
If, when dividing a room, a window is placed in only 1 zone, then it is necessary to hang transparent tulle (for better penetration of light into the room during the day) and thick curtains to create a cozy atmosphere at night. You can replace fabric curtains with bamboo or plastic blinds. It is recommended to mount the cornice directly to the ceiling surface, which will help visually increase the space of the room.
Partitions
It can be created from plywood sheet, fiberboard or chipboard. To improve the illumination of the area, you can use a glass analogue. The base 1-1.3 meters can be made of plywood, and the top can be made of glass. For a small room, it is advisable to choose a different planning technique. The advantages include strength, the ability to change shape, aesthetics and decor. Disadvantages include static nature and costs.
The main thing to avoid in such spaces is overloading with furniture.
Features of choosing furniture and accessories
As already noted, if there is a need to divide the living room into two parts, then you should buy functional furniture for the room. Sofas or chair-beds, folding beds, and compact tables are suitable for such rooms. To store books and other small items, it is recommended to hang shelves on the walls.
In the children's area, you can install a structure that combines cabinets, a bed and a desk. But in this case, you need to take into account the age of the child and select furniture in accordance with height and weight. If there is an area for children under six years old in the living room, it is necessary to provide drawers for storing toys. As accessories in zoned rooms, it is recommended to use hanging objects (paintings, photographs, etc.) that do not take up free space on the floor.
Sliding doors
They can be made from MDF, chipboard or wood and have glass inserts. This option is mobile and convenient; no repairs are required.
Properly selected decoration, suitable furniture and stylish accessories will help create the right atmosphere in the room.
Important! Choose a design that fits harmoniously into the surroundings. It is also important that your children can close and open them themselves. If there is one window in the room, sliding doors with glass inserts are suitable.
What to consider when dividing a room
Important parameters that need to be taken into account when dividing a room are the age of the child and the size of the bedroom. Before you start renovation work and furniture arrangement, you need to make a design for the future room:
- Draw a floor plan of the room, marking the entrance door and windows (balcony).
- Using hatching, divide the room into 2 functional zones - children's and adults. The children's area should be positioned so that most of the daylight falls on it.
- Choose the main color scheme.
- Choose compact furniture and the best option for its arrangement.
Other measures to arrange the room may be appropriate:
- installation of an additional heating source;
- creating a multi-level ceiling;
- laying heated floors;
- installation of temporary partitions;
- mounting a podium, etc.
Furniture and placement of beds
The bedroom for mother and child should be as comfortable, cozy and functional as possible. The size and design of furniture depend on the age and gender of the child, as well as the number of square meters in the room. A small child needs a crib, a changing table and a chest of drawers for things. If there is an acute lack of space, then the last 2 items can be combined into 1.
It is recommended to place furniture along the walls and leave the center of the room free. Thus, parents and children will have enough space for a comfortable pastime.
Accordingly, the following requirements will be imposed on furniture:
- Compact design - preference should be given to transforming models.
- Multifunctionality - sofas and armchairs can contain drawers for things, etc.
- It is recommended to use light colors of furniture.
- Environmentally friendly materials and safety - no sharp corners or traumatic decorative elements.
When combining a bedroom and a nursery in one room, you need to take into account all the points. First, you need to choose the right place for a sofa or bed, because they are the largest pieces of furniture. The head of the bed should traditionally be located along the wall. If you have a narrow and long room, the bed should be placed parallel to the wall. In this case, high decorative headboards will be inappropriate.
The baby crib can be positioned as follows:
- In the corner of the room.
- Opposite the parents' bed so that the child is under their supervision.
- Next to my parents' bed. If you move the baby’s crib close to the parent’s and dismantle one of its walls, you can arrange for mother and newborn to sleep together. This is a convenient option for both parents and children. Everyone has their own space, and at the same time the child feels the warmth and presence of the mother, so he sleeps more peacefully. In addition, mom will not need to get up at night to pick him up and feed him.
When choosing a place for a crib, you need to remember the following nuances:
- It should not be placed in close proximity to radiators and other heating devices. Hot and dry air has an adverse effect on a child's health. In addition, he may get burned by touching a heat source.
- It is not recommended to place the crib close to a computer or TV, as noise and bright lighting have a harmful effect on the baby.
- Do not place the crib close to sockets and objects that attract dust (curtains, carpets, etc.).
There is no need to fill the space of the room with a large number of cabinets, cabinets, chests of drawers and shelving. All furniture must be used to the maximum extent possible and in accordance with its intended purpose. If there is not enough storage space, things can be placed in the pantry or in the hallway closet. If you have a lot of space, the best place for storage would be a closet.
For a child of preschool and primary school age, a small sofa or chair-bed is suitable.
Lighting
You should pay attention to the lighting of the room. It shouldn't be harsh. For a cozy atmosphere you need dim and soft light. If there is bright daylight, you need to choose thick curtains that do not let in the sun's rays.
In the presence of a stretch ceiling, spotlights are most often used, from which diffused light emanates that does not irritate the eyes. With the help of such lighting, you can designate individual zones in the room. To create additional lighting, floor lamps, night lamps, sconces, etc. are used.
Podium as a zoning tool
How to divide a room into two zones for children and adults? A podium would be an excellent solution. A small elevation will help to distinguish the nursery from the outside and will fit well into the interior of the room.
A desk, shelving unit, bed or wardrobe can be installed on the podium located in the corner.
Zoning without structures
You can create an original design for a living room combined with a nursery without complex partition structures. For owners of rooms with small areas there are also interesting solutions that are worth taking note.
Niche
If there is a recess of the required area, there is no better place for a child’s bedroom and study. This is a convenient and original option for placing a living room with a children’s room in one room.
Loggia (balcony) in the hall
It is convenient to move the children's area to the loggia, but it needs to be well insulated. The temperature on the balcony should not differ from the temperature in the living room.
Ceilings of different colors and levels
Such ceilings will visually help separate the recreation area from the place of study and sleep.
Podium
An unusual solution would be to create a podium - a small elevation. This will not only visually highlight the nursery, but will also look great in the interior of the room. You can create a podium in the corner and place a bed, desk, wardrobe or shelving unit on it.
Effective contrasting decoration in the design of the walls, the use of different textures on the floor, the choice of different styles and original combined lighting. Designers have developed many different ideas for isolating the children's area in the living room.
- Different floor coverings. A combination of coatings of different colors or two types of coatings will highlight the zones. Carpets of different textures or colors perform the same function.
- Wall decoration. In the baby's play (sleeping) area, it is better to use other materials of bright colors for the walls. Photo wallpapers or paintings near the crib look great.
- Different ceiling levels. Wooden beams are used, as well as gypsum plasterboard ceilings with different levels. Spot lighting fixtures can be built into the beam.
- Lighting. The boundary between zones can be marked by floor lamps, pendant lamps, wall sconces, and beautiful ceiling chandeliers. A good option would be combined lighting. Ceiling spots are often built along the perimeter of zones.
Tips for decorating a shared room
The renovation has been completed, the layout is ready, the furniture has been looked after. Now is the time to think about the design of a guest room combined with a children's room. Here are some recommendations.
- It is important that the zones are different, but the overall ambiance of the room is orderly. In particular, it is better to sew pillows in the living room and curtains in the nursery from the same fabric, and the lamps were made from the same material.
Recesses in the partition can be used to decorate the room; this will make the interior more interesting and add individuality.
- To visually expand a cramped room, decorate it in light colors.
Try to choose primary colors for the nursery and for the living room that are approximately the same in saturation.
- Overloading the interior with colorful details and decor is unacceptable; the room will already be filled with children's things.
Most often, the children's corner is made brighter and more colorful than the main interior of the living room.
- Use more plants, they will please the eye and purify the air.
It is important to highlight individual objects in the interior - this can be done using contrasting colors.
- When planning your design, choose finishing materials wisely. Instead of vinyl wallpaper, use paint, and it is better to finish the floor with laminate.
In overly compact environments, you should give preference to lighter and fresher colors that will visually expand the room.
- If the hall and the nursery are large in size in one room, make one wall like a mini-climbing wall or a canvas on which you can draw with chalk.
A place for games can be highlighted in the interior using a bright color palette, which will be in harmony with the overall tone of the living room.
Ideas for a small living room
Decorating a small room in a Khrushchev-era building is quite difficult. For a child’s room, in this case, it is better to choose a loft bed, the lower tier of which is equipped with a desk or console tabletop.
For additional light and space, you can use blinds instead of curtains, replace bulky furniture with compact modular elements and add glass and mirror parts to the interior.
Models with built-in storage systems in the form of drawers and linen sections are suitable as furniture for a living room and a nursery combined in one room.
The problem of lack of space in one room can be solved by folding tables or maximizing the use of walls for hanging shelves.
The photo shows the interior of a small guest room with a children's bed located in a niche.
Bedroom and nursery in one room
Should I do it like in a nursery or like in a bedroom and how to balance it?
The correct design of a nursery should not be too bright. So the answer is to make a simple modern bedroom. The ideal style is Scandinavian.
I have already written about the approach to planning one-room apartments. When you have kids, it's important to choose the right style and prioritize. I highly recommend doing a modern apartment design. It is easier to implement, cheaper, more practical and most importantly allows for mixing and non-standard solutions.
And the bedroom combined with the nursery almost entirely consists of non-standard solutions. This imposes restrictions on the finish - it must be neutral. Due to complex custom furniture and high density items, you simply cannot afford complex ceiling designs or colorful wall decorations. All the decoration is just a background, don't bother with it.
To make the bedroom suitable as a nursery, we add brightness with bed linen, curtains, a bedside rug, and paintings. Kids just love bright colors, and it doesn't matter that it's added with easily replaceable items rather than decorations.
How to save space
If the room is designed for two children, then everything should be carefully thought through. After all, it should fit twice as many objects and things.
Compact furniture is selected for the room. Buy beds with built-in drawers for bed linen.
Narrow and tall storage systems take up minimal space. Often corner furniture and modular options are purchased for such a room.
The design of a children's room of 18 square meters looks stylish. m. with multi-tiered furniture. For this purpose, loft beds are ordered. You can buy a two-tier system with two beds.
How to arrange an adult and child's bed
children's room and bedroom in one room, decorated in Scandinavian style
The main function of the bedroom is rest and relaxation, and the main attributes of the bedroom are the beds. Traditionally, a bulky double bed for spouses occupies the central part of the room. The sleeping area is positioned with the headboard facing the wall. The solution to placing the bed diagonally is non-standard and interesting. It is possible if the area of the room allows you to arrange the necessary cabinets, chests of drawers, and bedside tables correctly and with convenient access. In a narrow room, it is better to place the bed across the room; the bedroom interior will look better and more harmonious.
Even in a small bedroom you can find a place for a crib, the main thing is to use the space correctly
The children's bed is smaller in size, has a standard size of 1.4 x 0.7 meters. There are three most popular options for its location. You can choose a bed whose bottom is set at different levels as the child grows.
- Corner placement. When the child grows up, the playpen can be replaced with a children's sofa, an armchair, and an area for games or training can be equipped. Usually the crib is fenced off with a bedside table or chest of drawers.
- Opposite the adults' bed. In the future, this place is perfect for simulating a fireplace, plasma panel or chest of drawers. And while the baby is growing, he will constantly be in the field of view of his parents.
- Next to my parents' bed. The best option for newborns. You can pick up your baby without getting out of bed. And if you remove the front post of the playpen, you get a common sleeping place. Mom will not only hear her child’s sniffling, but also constantly feel his warmth.
for design, it is allowed to use dark colors, only when combined with light colors
There are limiting rules that must be taken into account when choosing a place for a crib:
- Do not install a sleeping place for a child in close proximity to a window, door, or heating radiators. Overheating and hypothermia are equally harmful for a baby. He may find himself in a draft that is unnoticeable to an adult. Noise outside the door, slamming can disturb and frighten a child. And the proximity of a window opening is doubly dangerous. Children are inquisitive; there is a risk of the baby falling out of the window, confirmed by sad statistics.
- Potentially dangerous sockets and electrical appliances should not be placed near the bed, and pictures should not be hung above it.
- It is better to avoid having carpets on the walls. They can accumulate dust, which is a powerful allergen.
- In a nursery and bedroom combined in one room, adults will have to put up with the absence of a TV and computer.
The created space should remain beautiful and comfortable at the same time. Effective zoning techniques are used for this.
Furniture for children's room
A snow-white cabinet installed in a corridor niche organically merges with the wall. Inside it is equipped with a wide section with a rod for outerwear and a narrow shelving compartment with many shelves. The dressing room, equipped in the corner of the children's room, also has a closet of two similar sections.
The design of the stack, built in steps, reflects the architecture of Machu Picchu. On the wide shelves you can arrange a library, and on the open upper sections there will be convenient displays of artwork created by the hand of the eldest of the sisters.
At the head of the bunk bed there is a double-sided rack, on the one hand, replacing the bedside tables, on the other, used to place the personal belongings of the owners of the nursery. Near it, in a secluded corner, there is a folding table and an unusual orthopedic chair. This composition will become a convenient workplace for an older sister who, due to schoolwork, goes to bed later than her sister.

Let's get started with the design
Taking into account the interests of both parents and child, we begin to think about the sequence of work. We are faced with a difficult, but interesting and creative task. Solving it will require time and financial investment. Therefore, we resolve issues taking into account safety, functionality, coziness and comfort.
Before turning your plans into reality, take paper, pencil and:
- We draw a plan of the room, mark the location of door and window openings;
- We decide where there will be an adult space and where there will be a children’s space;
Tip: If there is only one window in the room, most of the natural light should be in the children's half.
- Deciding on a color palette;
- We make paper models of furniture and interiors: we experiment, rearrange, move them on the plan, find the most advantageous option;
- We think about what zones we would like to highlight in both halves, what their design will be, we find a way to combine the space using decorative elements so that the home has an aesthetically attractive appearance and radiates harmony.
Arrangement of a bedroom with a crib
A long-awaited event: a baby was born in the family. In the first years of his life, he needs to be close to his mother. This way he will feel calm. And in order to ensure harmonious coexistence of parents and child in the same area, the design of the bedroom must be thought out in advance.
In a spacious room, all the necessary items for a newborn can be easily arranged according to the classic principle:
- A cradle is placed opposite the parent's sleeping place;
- We place the sofa for mom next to the baby’s crib;
- There are wardrobes for adults in the corners;
In a small room, the child's seat should be placed next to the matrimonial bed or at the head of the bed. This is especially convenient for monitoring at night: you can calm your baby without getting out of bed.
Tip: if the apartment layout has niches or ledges, they can very conveniently accommodate a baby crib, while hiding it from prying eyes. And if you highlight the back walls of this niche in a harmonious color, you will get a mini room (see photo below)
Let's pay attention to the crib
Please note: if space allows, there should be free access to the crib. There is a gap of 70 cm between an adult and a child's sleeping place. In a narrow room, a bed placed across it looks harmonious, but in wide rooms it is installed along, or possibly diagonally, the wall.
An adult bedroom with a cot should be:
- Cozy;
- Comfortable for both parents and baby;
- Completely safe.
And in order for these requirements to be met, we offer you brief instructions on what you need to take into account when choosing a children's sleeping place.
Interior of a one-room apartment with a children's area: a good soundproofing solution | Make sure to isolate any noise sources as much as possible. Try to minimize the amount of external irritants so as not to disturb your baby, who sleeps a lot at first. |
| Small children have very weak immunity, so you should not install a crib near split systems. And modern plastic windows cannot always protect a home from drafts, so sources of cold should not be located nearby. |
| And vice versa, the cradle should not be placed near the battery either. The heat source can overheat the baby unnecessarily, and very dry air will not be beneficial either. The optimal temperature for a small child, and even for adults, is from +18°C to +22°C. |
Properly organized lighting | Direct sunlight and directional daylight should not disturb the little resident of your room. |
Safety is paramount | Don't forget about child safety. If there is nowhere to put the electrical outlet, equip it with a fuse. It is better to replace the direct connection socket altogether. It is advisable that there are no electrical outlets near the crib, as well as hanging shelves, unstable or falling objects that are attached to the wall or ceiling. |
| Look carefully for other irritants. These could be a TV, computer, music player, telephone, various types of alarms, etc. All this must be completely neutralized. |
Complete absence of various “dust collectors” in the space surrounding the baby | Remove items that accumulate dust (carpets, rugs, heavy curtains, open shelves where books have been kept for years) so as not to provoke the development of a dust allergy in the baby. For a canopy or cape over the crib, it is better to choose a dust-repellent fabric, or periodically wash it with antistatic agents. |
| It is also better to remove indoor plants. Of course, such as geranium, ficus and some others purify the air well. Therefore, you can leave one that is definitely not toxic, but put it away from the crib. If you really like indoor gardening, then consult with experts, read on the Internet which plant can be kept in the room where the newborn lives. |
We design adult and children's areas
If we organize zoning correctly, we will get order in the house and a cozy children's corner.
There are several ways to select zones:
- If the size of the room allows, a partition is installed. If not, curtains are hung or screens are placed (the positive point is that the baby is almost completely isolated from external stimuli, but the negative point is that the space is visually significantly reduced).
- A canopy or canopy made of thin transparent fabric not only adds its own romantic fairy-tale touch, but also protects the baby in the crib from the flow of bright light and flying insects.
- You can fence off part of the room with a cabinet;
- Zoning using lighting is used: the baby has dim light, and the parents have bright light;
- The color design of the children's and parent's spaces may also differ.
Note: if there is not enough space for a changing table and a chest of drawers, you can successfully use bedside drawers.

How to decorate the walls of a room
From an environmental point of view, the best solution for wall decoration would be paper or non-woven wallpaper in a calm color scheme. Good shades of blue, cream, light green tones.
The wall where the children's place is located can be aesthetically clearly highlighted and decorated with your own hands, using various children's accessories:
- Original photos of the baby in a beautiful frame;
- Illustrations of fairy tale plots, and for older children - favorite children's characters;
- A children's lamp or an exclusive sconce will add romance;
- Arrange children's soft toys;
- Bright colored paper garlands.
And another idea: Hang a photo of mom and dad above the crib, or write the baby’s name in large colorful letters.
The right combination of classic and Provence styles
Parents' bedroom and children's room in one room
The best style for dividing a room into a bedroom and a children's room is minimalism. There are no frills here, the furniture set is the most necessary. This style is more preferred by young people.
Wherein:
- In half, a simple crib and cabinets or chest of drawers are installed for the child;
- The colors of the furniture for the two halves should be similar;
- A partition is installed for zoning;
- The accent can be framed photos or drawings on the wall, or a bedspread.
Tip: If it is impossible to choose furniture for a child’s room so that it is in the same style and matches the color, you can use parts of two styles. But when combined, it is necessary that additional interior elements do not look like foreign ones and do not attract too much attention to themselves.
The classic interior style can be complemented with some Provence style elements. For example:
- Choose the right accessories: make a bedspread and curtains from pastel-colored fabric with a floral print;
- Select small paintings depicting landscapes;
- Lamps or chandeliers should have trapezoidal fabric lampshades;
- Decorate the crib with a canopy, decoupage or bright bows.
You can choose a combination of elements with other styles, but it is necessary that the texture, shades and prints of the coatings be combined with each other.
What should the lighting be like?
There should be dim lighting in the small child's area.
To do this you need to use:
- Lamps or wall sconces that exclude a bright directional stream of light;
- It is also necessary to consider the use of a night light. Its dim lighting will allow the baby to fall asleep calmly and not be afraid of the dark;
As for adults, in their half the lighting should be brighter.
For this:
- A chandelier is hung above the bed, and on the wall, in addition, there is a sconce;
- Spotlights are directed to illuminate the desired areas. The ideal solution would be to connect them in groups to different switches.
Please note: using energy-saving light bulbs will help save your family budget.
Choosing textiles
For bedrooms combined with children's rooms, you need to carefully select any finishing materials. Let's talk about what textiles should be like. Of course, preference is given to everything natural, hypoallergenic, and environmentally friendly.
Don’t forget about harmony: curtains and drapes, upholstery for upholstered furniture, decorative pillows – all in the same color scheme. If the floor is cool and you need to lay a rug, choose only products made from natural wool, and you will have to clean them more than once a day.
We bring to your attention a few simple tips on how to make the environment where there is an adult bed and a crib convenient, comfortable, and cozy:
- Use light colors, but in a children's space they will differ in saturation or pattern.
- Bright accents beautifully complement the interior: unusual colors of curtains, colorful lampshade;
- Small bright rugs on the floor near the bed will add attractiveness;
- The shades and texture of the textiles must match, but the patterns can be different.
By the way: when you buy a children's bed, pay attention to the evenness and neatness of the seams, refuse fabrics with obvious visible defects (tightening, hooks, errors in printing patterns), look at the light: the fabric should be of uniform density, and there should be an unpleasant, pronounced smell of dampness or chemistry is a good reason to refuse a purchase.
Space zoning
in this case, the closet separates the parental area and the children's area
It is necessary to arrange areas taking into account the availability of natural light and the possibility of ventilation. It's great if the room has 2 windows. Then it can be divided into zones so that each will have a source of daylight. It is advisable to decorate windows with light tulle, abandoning bulky fabric curtains.
Traditional zoning methods are partitions made of chipboard, glass blocks or plasterboard. During temporary zoning, parents often use light screens, curtains, and open shelving with books and toys. They are easy to dismantle when the child grows up, and it becomes possible to move him to a separate room.
a plaster partition with figured elements serves as a separator between the bedroom and the nursery
It is absolutely not necessary to arrange partitions. To separate zones, you can use different wallpapers and flooring. Photo wallpapers and wallpapers of rich and bright colors are suitable for children's rooms. The adult area can be decorated in a calmer and more laconic style. The main thing is to correctly combine textures, shades and patterns of finishing materials.
It's not just wallpaper that can be easily combined. Combinations of different floor coverings are effective. A soft carpet will bring coziness to the nursery, and practical laminate, linoleum, and parquet boards are perfect for the adult area. The best and most durable is wooden parquet. In addition to being environmentally friendly, it saves heat very well.
a low two-stage plasterboard partition functionally divides the space into zones
The modern interior design of a combined bedroom and children's room will provide interesting and unusual solutions. One of them is a two-level ceiling. Multi-level designs are spectacular and will decorate the interior of the room. You can arrange a podium for a crib. Or, on the contrary, organize a parent’s area on the podium, setting up a children’s area on the remaining area.

A popular technique for separating zones is the “carriage screed”. It is carried out using MDF sheets, on which padding polyester, foam rubber and decorative fabric are applied.
Children grow up, and sometimes parents have to share a bedroom with a schoolchild. It requires more space. The space can be used vertically by purchasing a loft bed. On the first floor of this design there will be a study space, and on the second there will be a bed.
