A pencil case will help organize the space in the hallway, where you can put hats, gloves, and shoes on the lower shelves. Moreover, making it with your own hands is not at all difficult. First you need to decide on the size of the cabinet and the number of shelves. In this master class it is proposed to make a cabinet 2.20 meters high, square in shape (40 X 40 cm) with five shelves. Next, the cabinet parts need to be cut out on a sheet of chipboard and edged. To do this, find any format-cutting shop in your city; in large cities, every construction hypermarket has one. Of course, you can cut out the parts with a jigsaw and make the edge yourself (with a hot iron or self-adhesive edge), but the cost of cutting is not so high as to risk right angles and economical placement on a sheet of chipboard. The calculation showed that the cost of the cabinet, which includes the price of a chipboard sheet, a fiberboard sheet for the back wall, the price of cutting and edging, is 50% of the cost of the finished product in the store. So, the pencil case consists of 11 parts. The table shows their dimensions, the necessary work that needs to be ordered in the cutting and format shop, the dimensions are indicated in millimeters.
To calculate your dimensions, use the following algorithm: 1. Determine the parameters of the cabinet - length X width X depth. 2. Dimensions of the side walls – length X depth. 3. Shelves – depth X (width – 2*chipboard thickness). In our case, the chipboard thickness is 16 mm. 4. Lower façade - usually 50-70 mm high, as wide as shelves. 5. Rear wall and door - (length - front height - 5 mm) X (width - 5 mm). Also, do not forget to order 3 round holes in the door, with a diameter equal to the hinge (for example, 40 mm), located 100 mm from the top and bottom edges, the third hole exactly in the middle. The edge varies in thickness from 0.6 to 2 mm and material: paper and plastic. The best option is a 1 mm plastic edge. Required tools and materials:
- a drill with a confermate drill, aligned along the length of the confermate (in this case, 45 mm);
- screwdriver with hexagon or manual hexagon;
- conferments and decorative plugs for them;
- square, tape measure and pencil.
All parts and tools are ready, let's start assembling. Step 1. On the side walls from the bottom we measure 58 mm (50 mm facade + 8 mm half the thickness of the chipboard, called the hole along the axes). Draw a line with a pencil, measure 100 mm from each edge on it - this is the place where the bottom shelf is screwed. Marks points for the facade: 25 mm from the bottom and 8 mm from the edge.
Step 2. Measure 8 mm from the top of the side wall, draw a line and put 100 mm on the sides to make the holes symmetrical - this is the top wall of the cabinet. The distance is measured between the lines in steps 1 and 2 - in our case it is 2134 mm. In addition to the top and bottom, there are 4 shelves left, therefore, 2134 / 5 = 427 mm. We draw lines every 427 mm, and also set aside 100 mm from the edges to make the holes symmetrical.
Step 3. Place the side shelves on 2 stools (carefully so as not to damage the stool) and drill holes at the prepared marked points.
Step 4. Next, measure 100 mm at the ends of the shelves and 8 mm along the axes. We make holes in all shelves at the designated points.
Step 5. We assemble the shelves, screw them to the side walls: first to one, then put the second wall and connect it to the shelves.
Step 6. On the short sides at the ends of the facade, drill holes at a distance of 25 mm from the bottom and 8 mm from the edge, screw the facade to the side walls of the cabinet. Step 9. Installing the door: hinges are screwed into the ordered holes. Then the door is placed evenly against the cabinet and with an awl (core) marks are made for holes for self-tapping screws through the hinges themselves. You need to screw the door with someone's help. If you make a slight mistake, it’s not a big deal, since the loop itself is adjustable vertically and horizontally.
The handle is screwed where it is convenient for you. The back wall is nailed with small shoe nails. If the room has a high baseboard, you can make semicircular recesses at the bottom of the cabinet using a jigsaw so that it fits snugly against the wall. For aesthetics, the confermates are closed with plastic plugs. Enjoy it for your health!
There is always not enough space in the kitchen, no matter how many wall and floor cabinets you install. You can solve this problem with the help of a capacious pencil case, made independently, at home. If you don’t know what is required for this, we will help you.
The main thing is to read our article, and everything will fall into place.
You always need a pencil case in the kitchen; you can definitely find something to put in it
Deciding on materials and sizes
Initially, where you need to start the entire work process is to prepare all the tools that will be required. If difficulties arise, you can rent power tools from a hardware store; most large organizations offer this service. If not, then you will have to ask your neighbors or friends.
Tools
- Drill. It will require various drills, in particular: 6 mm, 8 mm and 5 mm.
- Screwdriver. Also purchase attachments: Phillips, hex (for Euro screws) and countersink. To ensure that the screws are flush with the surface of the material.
- Roulette.
- Construction square.
- Level.
- Hammer.
Note! You can get by with a set of screwdrivers, but this will make the work process too slow. When you assemble it yourself, you want to speed up the work, it’s better not to waste a couple of thousand and use a professional tool.
Materials
Now let's select the materials we need.
- First of all, we order a frame from a furniture company. Most often it is made from laminated chipboard, so it is practical and reliable. Most likely, your kitchen is made of chipboard. Choose a similar color and the size you need. We clarify that you can also order drilling with framing from the organization, but to save money, agree only to stick the edge. You can drill it yourself.
For your information! It is better if the kitchen cabinet has a single top point with the top of the wall cabinets. This way the composition will look like “native”.
- Now we decide on the kitchen facades. If your kitchen is old, it's unlikely you'll be able to find something suitable, so look at what you like. If the kitchen is modern and was installed 3-5 years ago, then, most likely, the material for the facades for the kitchen will be chosen in a single color. It will be either MDF, plastic, or natural wood.
- The back wall is DVPO, it is also worth ordering from a furniture organization.
Important! If you have not ordered accessories, that is, all the components for your pencil case, then you will have to look for a hardware store that sells it all. You will need: hinges for swing doors, Euroscrews, nails, 4x16 mm self-tapping screws, handles and shelf supports.
As you can see, nothing complicated. You can buy everything and assemble it yourself. Moreover, the price for such a service will be significantly lower than if you order both production and assembly in the organization.
The history of the appearance of pencil cases. What is a school pencil case and how to assemble it correctly

Nowadays, a school pencil case is an obligatory guest in any schoolchild’s backpack or bag. But it’s difficult to definitively answer how old this item, intended for storing writing instruments, is.
If you call any box or bag in which writing utensils are stored a pencil case, then it becomes clear that the history of the origin of the pencil case begins with the history of writing. If we consider in detail how the pencil case, which is familiar to everyone, appeared and changed over time, a few school lessons will not be enough.
In ancient times, people did not attach importance to what a pencil case was. The name for this thing appeared much later. In Russia, the term appeared in the 20th century - it was borrowed from the German language. The explanatory dictionary says that this is a box for feathers, pens, and pencils. Until modern times, pencil cases were not given much aesthetic importance - they were needed to store feathers and pencils, and therefore were rigid, with virtually no decoration.
Mark and drill
First of all, they start by marking the sidewalls:
The drilling process goes something like this
- If the product will stand on the floor, then the bottom shelf is marked with an indentation of 50-60 mm. From the edges, a step of 50 mm is usually used.
- The top shelf is marked with an indentation of 8 mm. It depends on the density of the material, if it is 16 mm, then the middle is 8 mm, but if it is more, then, accordingly, the center shifts.
- The remaining shelves are laid out in a chaotic order, that is, as you need. With the exception of the center shelf, it is necessary for rigidity.
Please note that the central shelf is rigid, the rest are removable for ease of use
For your information! For reliability, it is best to order a few more stiffening ribs that are attached along the rear wall. Through them you can pull the pencil case to the wall.
- All marks for hard shelves are drilled with an 8 mm drill. On the side where the Euroscrews will be screwed in, you need to go through it with a countersink.
- For removable shelves, use a 5mm drill bit. The depth should be no more than 10 mm, since the shelf holder itself is recessed into the material by 6 mm.
Various types of shelf supports
We drill rigid shelves and stiffening ribs with an indentation of 8 mm and 50 mm with a 6 mm drill.
Interesting! If you do not want to drill a lot of holes, then it is better to use plastic or metal corners and attach them to self-tapping screws. This is another way to do without power tools, however, it is not as aesthetically pleasing.
Cabinet in the hallway
Small and narrow corridors, as well as hallways, are difficult to arrange and, ultimately, keep clean. A pencil case in such a room will work best.
Advice! A mirror installed on the front panel will allow you to evaluate the chosen stylization of your image and optically enlarge the room.
An interesting solution are modules consisting of shelves, hangers and shoe cabinets. Some manufacturers also install a mirror and convenient hooks for keys in the pencil case. Due to their small size, such structures do not interfere with the passage and can be placed almost anywhere.
Assembling the pencil case
Now we move on to the most crucial moment, after which we can draw a conclusion - whether we have a pencil case for the kitchen or not.
- Let's start by clearing the room for work.
- Now we take the side part and screw all the rigid shelves to it. It’s better to do this on the floor, it’s easier and faster. However, if you have planned a cabinet for the ceiling, you will have to assemble it while standing; in this case, it is better to find an assistant.
- Then we attach the second side panel and pierce the back wall with nails.
- We lift the pencil case and push it to the place where it should stand.
- Using intersectional ties, we attach it to the kitchen set: wall and floor cabinets. If there is nothing nearby, then we fix the product to the wall through the rigidity.
Such pencil cases should be fixed to the wall so that they do not accidentally fall on you
- We screw the hinges onto the doors, try to do this evenly, otherwise the mechanism may quickly wear out.
- Holding the façade up, we screw the screws into the middle of the holes on the hinge eye, so that there is room for adjustment. Look at the photo to see how this should be done.
- All that remains is to drill and screw the handles.
The distance between the hinge and the end of the door should not exceed 5 mm
The final touch is the alignment of the facades. Here, focus not on the level, but on how the pencil case is visually perceived. In some cases, it happens that kitchen cabinets are not installed level, then it makes no sense to measure a 90-degree angle and look for a vertical and horizontal plane.
What to look for when buying a pencil case
The appearance of an accessory is not as important as its characteristics. When we pack a pencil case for school, attention is first paid to the size and weight of the item. The younger the child for whom it is purchased, the lighter it should be. So book-shaped accessories should be put off until high school.
Once you have decided on its shape and type of clasp, it is worth asking your child what kind of writing instrument case he wants to carry with him. In elementary grades, boys and girls tend to choose things with prints, most often with images of their favorite characters from TV series and cartoons. Later, they give preference to more restrained options with graphic designs. Children's preferences are taken into account by printing companies.
Before packing your pencil case for school, decide whether you will choose options with filling or choose writing accessories separately. It is necessary that the selected accessory accommodates all purchased pencils, pens, rulers and other school supplies.

Column
The column, a tall and narrow structure with many niches and closed shelves, deserved the greatest love from owners and housewives. Such a cabinet is not a separate piece of furniture, but this is even a plus: it will be easy to make such a pencil case with your own hands even at the renovation stage from plasterboard or MDF sheets, securing them to a metal frame. At the same time, you can give the entire structure individuality and harmoniously fit into the overall interior with the help of properly selected finishes. However, you can ask furniture makers to make the cabinet as an additional module if you order the entire set to be made to your own measurements. Then the pencil case-column will complement the kitchen set without standing out from the general row - except perhaps by its “height”.
The functionality and application possibilities of such a cabinet are simply off the charts. There is room here for a large number of household appliances that would be difficult to place in a standard kitchen any other way. You can build into a column:
- Dishwasher or washing machine. Usually they are located in the lowest compartment of the pencil case cabinet, and are covered from the outside with a front panel that matches the color of the rest of the set.
- Oven. It was always inconvenient to bend over to the dishes being prepared in it, but with the advent of independent built-in models, this issue was removed. Now it is customary to install the oven in a separate niche of the column at a level of 1-1.5 m from the floor - it is convenient to use and easy to monitor the preparation of dishes.
- Microwave. Special models of microwave ovens are available for installation in kitchen cabinets. But their cost is quite high, even if the number of functions is not impressive. The beauty of a column cabinet is that you can simply make an open niche in it of suitable dimensions and install a regular microwave in it - it will look no worse.
The remaining free interior space of the cabinet can traditionally be used for storing various utensils, supplies and small household appliances. Now imagine how much you managed to fit into a tiny kitchen area by simply lining everything up in a vertical line. Sometimes the column is made purely symbolic, leaving in its upper part only one or two compartments for kitchen utensils, which are rarely used. The rest of the interior space turns into a niche for the refrigerator if you don’t want to attract unnecessary attention to it.
Such a solution would also be appropriate for kitchens where it is necessary to hide communications and some of the equipment present: a water heater, water and gas distribution, embedded meters. To do this, it is enough to cut the pencil case with your own hands in the right places, and leave free space inside for utility networks and devices. They will not be visible behind closed facades, and the kitchen will finally take on a modern and stylish look. This will significantly reduce the capacity of the furniture module, but if aesthetics are more important to you, this option will be optimal.
A custom-made column cabinet or a do-it-yourself pencil case assembled on site can occupy any empty niche, stand in a row with the rest of the set, in a corner or even in the middle of the room, taking on the function of separating the space into zones.
How to choose a pencil case for school
All modern versions of pencil cases can be divided into three large groups:
- tubes,
- cosmetic bags,
- books.
Their names speak for themselves - in appearance they resemble the corresponding accessories. But how to choose the best school pencil case? To decide, you need to determine which parameters are most important for you.
Which school pencil case should you choose?
Tubes are most often made of plastic. Sometimes their surface is covered with fabric. Such options are well suited for first-graders - they are difficult to break, just wash them if the inner surface gets dirty. In terms of size, this is the most compact option and will fit into any backpack.
The second most comfortable items are cosmetic bags. They will fit not only writing instruments, but also little things that children need. Most of them are fabric bags made of quite thick fabric, as an option - with a print applied by large-format printing. Closes with Velcro or zipper.
The last option is a pencil case book. It is the most comfortable, as the pockets of the book can accommodate a huge amount of stationery. Perfect for middle and high school students and students. Not only writing instruments will fit there, but also brushes, pencils, and rulers for drawing and drawing.
Classic module
This is still the same tall and narrow closet or pencil case from which it all began. Only now it has several additional varieties. On sale you can find models with a different number of doors, with drawers and even glazed facades, turning a massive piece of furniture into an elegant china cabinet.
There are also designs with open shelves on which everything you need is placed. But since the main purpose of a tall cabinet is to accommodate a maximum of utensils and small equipment in a small space, you still shouldn’t completely abandon the doors. Behind blank facades or at least tinted glass you can hide what you don’t want to show off.
Floor cabinet for living room
The pencil case is timeless furniture. Of course, it will work in any interior, but especially in the bedroom and living room. Spacious shelves allow you to organize all your clothing items. You have a choice of several types of cabinets:
- A 120 cm wide wardrobe is the most common choice among clients.
- Furniture up to 200 cm wide is equipped with a large number of drawers, which are great for a children's or youth room. This will be a suitable place to store small items or children's treasures. A properly selected wardrobe should highlight the character of a given room.
- Corner cabinets also have many supporters. This is a practical solution in situations where you don't have much space.
Interesting! Any type of cabinet can be easily adjusted to any interior. The undoubted advantage of single-door cabinets is their simple assembly. You won't have much of a problem with this. Due to their small size, such designs will fill even the narrowest spaces of the room.
Pull-out or draw-out models
In the full sense of the word, a retractable pencil case cannot be called furniture, since here we are talking more about a storage system that moves out of the general row thanks to special mechanisms. Inside there are baskets or several stationary shelves with side holders and dividers, where all items are securely fixed in their places. Usually in such mini-cases they store:
- Spices and bottles with different liquids (vegetable oil, vinegar, drinks and sauces).
- Small kitchen utensils - from cups and ladles to cutting boards and pot lids.
- Household chemicals and cleaning products - usually low built-in pencil cases under the countertop in the sink area are used for this.
A retractable module is an excellent option if, after designing the main set, the narrow opening remaining for a standard pencil case turns out to be too small.
Cabinet-pencil case - inexpensive furniture for every interior
Modern cabinets, although small, guarantee:
elegant interior design style;
functionality;
long-term use.
There are many advantages to purchasing a pencil case for your home or apartment, so you should familiarize yourself with the offer and choose one of the models for yourself. There is another important issue, namely the attractiveness of prices for these cabinet structures. Depending on the model, the prices, of course, are different, but they are always attractive, so almost everyone can afford to buy such a piece of furniture. Small interiors or low storage space are the main reasons for purchasing stylish and practical cabinets. Designers and manufacturers have done everything to make this furniture worth your attention and money today.
Built-in kits
This is one of the newest trends in the rational organization of workspace. Here, tall kitchen cabinets and pencil cases are no longer separate modules, but are integrated into the wall niche. You can still build in household appliances here, and place all the utensils you have behind the doors. Drawers are practically not used in such models, and the insides of the cabinets are hidden behind blank facades, forming a single surface with the main wall. The result is a very spacious, but at the same time completely invisible design.
As you can see, the kitchen pencil case is a really convenient and extremely useful piece of furniture. So if the room area does not allow you to increase the number of modules by lengthening the headset line, a narrow cabinet will help solve this problem. All that remains is to choose the appropriate variety.
Cabinet-case for clothes, dishes, books, hygiene products - an option for any purpose
Are you wondering where you can use a pencil case? A wardrobe that will live up to your expectations? Ample bathroom storage? Necessary furniture for the kitchen? A functional pencil case is a piece of furniture that works great in every room. This will be suitable furniture for your bedroom, dressing room, bath, children's room, as well as kitchen.
Style issues
The wardrobe should correspond not only to the size of the room, but also to the style in which the entire apartment is decorated. However, keep in mind that light structures on a white background work best in small spaces. Colonial and industrial stylization in this version will not be very good. Today, facades decorated with decoupage and glossy lacquered doors are in fashion - this is what small interiors love most. Also pay attention to the materials from which your cabinet will be made. Wood, both raw and painted, will go well with plastic and glass.
Modern cabinets will meet your expectations in terms of aesthetics, as well as in practical terms. The photo gallery offers will inspire you to design a beautiful interior. It all depends only on personal imagination!
