Throne chair: features of models

Throne chair - features of models

Throne chairs have a wide range of characteristic properties:

  • High back. The lion's share of models are equipped with a very high back of complex shapes;
  • Abundance of decorations. Here you will encounter carvings, gilding, luxurious upholstery, draperies, and gold embroidery. All possible variations cannot be counted;
  • Natural materials. Undoubtedly, the basis of all thrones is the wood of expensive and rare species;
  • Extremely high prices. Such chairs can exceed the price tags of designer furniture. However, they are somewhat similar. The production of thrones is also not put on a wide conveyor belt and is a piece work;
  • Decoration in palace styles. There's no escape, but the most popular styles are Baroque and Rococo. They are the ones that people strongly associate with royal luxury;
  • Increased comfort. Today, the throne is a relative concept. It has nothing to do with regalia. But, it will undoubtedly be the most comfortable chair with a luxurious design;
  • Opportunity to transform the interior. It is worth considering that the rest of the furnishings should be in the same style. Otherwise, the most luxurious furniture will irritate the eye and look like a black sheep.

Shapes and sizes

When choosing a throne-shaped chair, you should take into account the variety of shapes and the resulting difference in size:

  • Low semicircular. It is a luxurious pouf with a figured low back, consisting of 3 – 5 sections. The average height is up to 90 cm, width up to 80, and in depth it can reach 60 cm;
  • Square with medium back. The width and depth of the chair reach 80 cm. The height will not exceed 105 cm;
  • In the form of a chair with a high back. The width is 90 cm, the depth is standard (80 cm), but the height can reach 180 cm;
  • Upholstered chair with a high back. Here the width will be significantly higher and can be 120 – 140 cm. The back can reach up to 2 meters. Depth increases. It can reach 1 meter or even exceed this figure. Such models are always the largest;
  • With a hood. Such variations with a domed top are often called gatekeeper chairs. The width and depth are quite standard (80 cm each). The height, thanks to the dome, starts from 160 cm.

Step-by-step process for making a man-made throne

You can choose the most varied shape for the throne - this is limited only by your ability to work with wood.

Preparing the seating area

Having chosen a suitable root, you will need to cut out a massive part with a chainsaw, making something like a chair. This cut must be made at an angle of 90 degrees or more, here everyone decides for himself how it will be more convenient for him to sit on his wooden throne.

Heat treatment of the root

Light the blowtorch, when it warms up and the flame begins to burn steadily, you can start firing.

Before starting work, make sure that there are no flammable objects around, and that your clothes are not soaked with gasoline or oil after using the saw! Follow safety precautions!

The surface of the future throne should be burned carefully; do not be afraid to burn some places; after brushing, the throne will only benefit from this due to the coloring. Point the flame at hard-to-reach places, where harmful insects most often hide.

Sanding the surface of a wooden throne

Fix the brush on the grinder and start processing. After removing the burnt layer of wood, the structure of the treated surface will have a pleasant specific shade.

Important to remember! When working with an angle grinder, you should protect yourself from flying bristles. They are especially dangerous to the eyes, so protect them with tight-fitting goggles. Wear long sleeves that are buttoned tightly.

Places that are difficult to reach with an angle grinder can be treated with a similar brush for a drill; it is not suitable for sanding large areas, but is perfect for hard-to-reach corners.

Throne support

Scheme of a wooden throne.

The root of a tree is rarely shaped to be stable after treatment. To do this, you need to make additional support.

To make a wooden throne support, you can take a small log, but this can make the already massive throne heavier. Using a chainsaw, you can give the log a bizarre shape, and thereby slightly reduce its weight.

If one support for a wooden throne is not enough, then you can make a small leg from a branch.

It should be taken into account that all dimensions and connection points will have to be adjusted after the fact.

The supports are attached to the throne through pre-drilled holes with long self-tapping screws; their caps should be shaped to fit the head of the spanner. Ordinary self-tapping screws will not work; when screwed into dense wood, the seating area under the screwdriver may be erased.

Seat and back of the throne

All that remains is to cut out the blanks for the seat and back of the throne. To do this, you will need to dissolve a log with a diameter of 200-300 mm into thin pieces. You will need from 4 to 7 such parts, depending on the diameter of the log and the height of the back of the throne.

Advice! If the log has a small diameter, then it should be cut at an angle, like smoked sausage served on a festive table.

After cutting out part of the back of the throne, you can burn it, like the root itself. And process it with a grinder.

The parts of the back and seat are attached, also through holes drilled in them.

An original idea for a throne with your own hands.

Having made deep patches under the bolts, you can hide their heads with the help of twigs. To do this, select a branch that matches the diameter of the hole in the part and insert it tightly there. Then saw off flush and sand. This way the plug will look like a knot in the wood.

If the plugs dry out over time and begin to fall out, they can be installed with PVA glue.

Your own throne, installed at the far wall of the room or in the gazebo, will certainly arouse the awe and respect of those around you. And you will hear even more praise if you tell him that the wooden throne was made with your own hands. By the way, if you like working with wood, then by collecting another such throne, you can make an original gift to your best friend or boss.

Manufacturing materials

The base material is natural wood. All elements of the frame and supports are made from it. It’s easy to guess that you won’t find ordinary pine in such thrones. It will be red or ebony, cherry, chestnut, beech, and other expensive varieties. They are distinguished not only by excellent performance, but also by their magnificent appearance. Wood lends itself well to decoration and shaping, which in this case plays into the hands of the craftsmen.

Upholstery materials

Long gone are the days when the throne in people’s minds was a massive wooden “box” with a bunch of decorations and terribly uncomfortable. Around the Middle Ages, thanks to the French, soft upholstery with luxurious textile pillows became an integral part of thrones.

This tradition is not violated even today:

  • Velvet. Soft fabric with a characteristic pearlescent shimmer. Very beautiful, pleasant to the touch. Requires treatment with antistatic agents, otherwise your chair will turn into a dust collector. It is not resistant to abrasion, but drapes perfectly in soft folds;
  • Jacquard. Thanks to the unique interweaving of matte threads with silk, it forms a double-sided pattern with a volume effect. The master who invented this fabric received recognition and a monument during his lifetime, which is rare. In the Middle Ages, they successfully replaced hard, heavy brocade. Prone to forming puffs. Therefore, it is worth choosing options with anti-claw treatment;
  • Natural leather, fur. Undoubtedly, these luxurious materials occupy their niche with dignity. Here you will not encounter defective skins with poor production. There will be no need to worry about quality;
  • Real silk. It has a discreet gloss, high density, and resistance to creasing. May be iridescent. A wonderful fabric that pleasantly cools the skin in hot weather and warms in sub-zero temperatures.

Styles

Throne chairs will fit well into the following styles:

  • Colonial. A slightly heavy style, based on natural wood. The furniture is massive and heavy. Favorite colors include the whole range of red or dark tones of natural wood. It is worth choosing models with an average amount of finishing, and the emphasis is on luxurious upholstery;
  • Oriental. A throne with a hood will fit harmoniously here. And if the finishing is made of silk, and the ornament is suitable, then no one will immediately guess about the English origin of this chair;
  • Rococo, Baroque. There are no restrictions. Choose what suits your liking and wallet. The finish can be any, the shape too. Symmetry is not necessary, so a single copy is the norm;
  • Classic. It is better to choose paired thrones with a low or medium back. It is better to choose tall models in subdued colors with more modest finishing. Rounded shapes and cut corners are held in high esteem;
  • Classicism, neoclassicism. These styles gravitate towards antique lightness, harmony and correctness of form. Asymmetry, too catchy or dark colors are not held in high esteem. But the luxury and splendor of the decoration are welcome. But, it must be elegant;
  • Gothic. Throne chairs, more reminiscent of high chairs, will simply fit perfectly into this style. Minimum textiles and maximum real wood. This is a kind of Gothic slogan. It would be great if the back was in the form of an arch or the decorations were of this shape. A large number of carvings without gilding are welcome. It is better to replace it with glossy varnish.

Throne chair in the interior of a residential apartment

The throne chair will fit well into the following interior styles:

  • classic;
  • baroque;
  • rococo;
  • Gothic;
  • classicism;
  • Renaissance;
  • English style.

All these traditional stylistics are still used, albeit in a somewhat transformed form. Interior design in Baroque, Gothic or any other of the listed styles using various throne chairs should be implemented in spacious rooms. Such furniture will fit most successfully into living rooms and dining rooms. But in small rooms it will look bulky and awkward. Which throne to choose is up to you. It can be decorated with upholstery made of expensive fabrics, elaborate carvings, beautiful pillows or a footstool.

However, if you are a supporter of minimalism or any other simple modern style, there is a solution for you too. Nowadays so-called frameless thrones are popular. That is, these are the same bean bag chairs that have been in fashion for quite a long time, but with comfortable high backs. This funny variation on the throne theme will appeal to both children and adults.
