Curtain rod for suspended ceilings: photos in the interior and tips for choosing

Types of baguette for suspended ceilings

There are several main types of baguette, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. To choose the best option, you must consider the following features:

  • profile design;
  • fastening type;
  • ease of operation.

Sometimes you need the help of a specialist.

PVC baguette for suspended ceilings

The peculiarity of the production of PVC baguette for suspended ceilings is its low cost: plastic is relatively cheap, and transportation costs for transporting such products are minimal.

The second advantage of PVC structures is flexibility. They can be mounted on walls with curved planes - a flexible strip will repeat small irregularities. But at the same time, this product is quite rigid in order to securely hold the canvas.

Another advantage is the ease of installation. Screwing self-tapping screws into the strip does not require preliminary drilling, so the work can be done with just one screwdriver. Also, soft plastic does not scratch surrounding furniture and interior details.

Advice! Sometimes the plastic baguette for installing suspended ceilings is fragile. Therefore, it is necessary to screw screws into such a profile at the minimum speed of the screwdriver so that cracks do not appear.

Aluminum baguette for suspended ceilings

The main advantage of an aluminum baguette is its high strength; it is almost not deformed. Due to its good rigidity, the product can be installed in spacious rooms. Along its entire length, the plank does not bend and remains strictly horizontal.

Another advantage of an aluminum baguette is its cost-effectiveness. The metal structure does not require frequent fastening, so you can save on dowels. Another feature of the plank is the high reliability of the design and its durability.

Wall molding for suspended ceilings

The product is a strip that is mounted on the wall. Typically, this type of construction is used where it is necessary to make a large indentation from the main ceiling. A similar situation arises when it is necessary to place electrical boxes or other electrical devices in the interceiling space.

Installing a wall structure is similar to installing drywall, so it will not cause difficulties even for inexperienced finishers. The canvas is attached to the product using a straight spatula.

Ceiling molding for suspended ceilings

Ceiling molding for suspended ceilings is not used so often; you rarely see its photo in a designer’s portfolio. The type of device involves fastening directly to the ceiling, at the point where it adjoins the wall. In most cases, the use of this product is justified by the high curvature of the walls of the room.

Installation of the structure can be difficult, since you will have to drill into the floors, and there is a risk of getting into the reinforcement or slab void. The fabric is fixed with straight blades, and the gap between the baguette and the wall is masked with decorative tape.

Universal baguette for suspended ceilings

For special tasks, a gapless, universal baguette for suspended ceilings is used; it can take complex curved shapes. This is usually necessary when the room has a non-standard geometry or is designed in the form of a semicircle. This device can be mounted to both the ceiling and the wall.

Installing a universal profile requires certain skills. The canvas is fixed in it with straight blades.

Profile mounting

The installation of baguettes for suspended ceilings, regardless of the chosen surface for fastening, is generally easy.

  1. First of all, a thin, even line is drawn along the top of the walls.
  2. The profiles have through holes for subsequent fastenings.
  3. The bottom line of the profile is aligned with the broken line.
  4. At the level of the profile holes, marks are made in the walls and then drilled for the subsequent insertion of dowel-nails, which are then carefully driven inside.

The base of the wall surface for this installation is concrete. Wall mounting is considered the most reliable.

The procedure for direct fastening of an aluminum baguette for a stretch ceiling.

A concrete wall is best for mounting.

If an aluminum baguette is attached for a stretch ceiling, then the work process is divided into the following stages.

  1. The baguette is tried on and cut to the required size.
  2. Using a drill, holes are drilled in increments of 20 cm.
  3. The profile is applied to the wall. You can use a level and then mark installation points.
  4. Holes are drilled using a hammer drill.
  5. Baguettes for suspended ceilings are attached to surfaces with dowels.

Fixing aluminum profiles is carried out in one piece, since the joining is very difficult.

The easiest way is to use glue for baguettes.

Fastening order.

  1. The composition is applied to the back profile side or to the wall surface and pressed against the wall and ceiling surface.
  2. High-density paper strips are cut and inserted between the profile and the ceiling.
  3. The joints are puttied and, after drying, sanded, primed and painted. The paper is carefully removed by cutting.

Using masking tape

It is impossible to install the baguette so that no gaps form between it and the ceiling surface. Masking tape can save the situation. This is the most popular method of masking cracks. It plays the role of a plug and is called in the same way: T-shaped plug, L-shaped plug, mushroom-shaped decorative plug.

The color of the material must match the general tone of the suspended ceilings.

The most popular types.

  1. Matte. Pairs perfectly with matte ceilings.
  2. Glossy. They reflect the sun's rays and create an unusual light play.
  3. With embossing. They make the baguette voluminous.
  4. Colored. They give the appearance of a harmonious design.

The color of the tape must be chosen the same as the ceiling.
Ceiling structures benefit greatly if decorative design is applied to them. Currently, baguettes have become very popular among similar elements of top decor. The room is completely transformed. A smooth smooth surface with a beautiful edging gives the design a state of completeness.

The profile photos clearly show the features of their cross-section.

Baguette for fabric and PVC stretch ceilings

The fabric material places special demands on the profile; not every design can hold both PVC and fabric equally well. The heavier the panel, the stiffer the bar should be. To hold dense vinyls, an aluminum profile with a harpoon type of fastening is better suited. Lighter fabrics can be attached to plastic profiles with a wedge fastening system. It is also not recommended to use a cam lock for stretching PVC sheets, since it does not hold the smooth edges of the film well.

Baguette for floating suspended ceilings

To create popular floating ceilings, a special profile is used; its design provides a gap between the wall and the edge of the canvas. This creates the effect of floating and weightlessness.

The profile is screwed onto the walls. The product is made from both PVC and aluminum.

Baguette with lighting for stretch ceiling

The backlit profile is a type of strip for floating canvases. The only difference is that here the design involves the installation of an LED strip, the light from which comes from the gap between the wall and the ceiling. It looks quite impressive.

There are two types of backlit profiles. In the first, the strip does not have a plug for the LED strip, so it is not glued, but simply snapped on. In this way, you can quickly install and remove illumination. The disadvantage of this system is that the light falls on the wall and not on the floor, so it turns out dim.

Another type of product has a special transparent plug insert, which is covered with a translucid layer. The advantage of this design is the soft and bright light directed onto the floor.

Baguette for two-level ceilings

A two-level design requires the simultaneous installation of two types of profiles. One of them is attached directly to the wall, then the lower sheet is pulled from it. Another, flexible profile is mounted on the ceiling in the middle of the room. The flexible strip allows you to give the top sheet various shaped shapes.

Comment! When choosing a two-level design, you should remember that it conceals the height of the room. Height may decrease by 10 cm or more.

Separating baguettes by shape

In addition to the classifications described above, baguette for suspended ceilings is divided into several subtypes:

  • flat baguette;
  • narrow profile;
  • wide baguette;
  • baguette for curtain lighting.

Baguette for curtain lighting

A narrow baguette is used in single-level stretch ceilings and is attached around the perimeter of the room. A wide baguette is used with decorative wholes and is more suitable for suspended ceilings made of fabric. A flat baguette is mounted on the wall directly under the tension panel and performs aesthetic functions.

The baguette for curtain lighting has a special groove on the back side into which an LED strip is mounted. It does not fit tightly to the ceiling, but is mounted with a slight indentation from it for the free passage of light. For curtains in this case, it makes sense to use special curtain rods for suspended ceilings.

Which baguette is better for a suspended ceiling?

Each type of fastening profile has its pros and cons. The choice of a specific design depends on the material of the canvas and the characteristics of the room. It is worth paying attention to the price of the product. Some expensive models will turn out to be much cheaper in future operation. For example, aluminum strips with a harpoon lock perfectly secure even heavy fabric, so re-tightening is not necessary.

Harpoon type ceiling molding

The cross-sectional profile of the bar of this fastening system resembles a harpoon. The canvas is fixed with a special spatula, which is inserted into the groove. The advantage of this type of fastening is high reliability. Most expensive suspended ceiling systems have a harpoon lock.

The disadvantage of this system is that it is impossible to independently install the harpoon on the edge of the canvas. And if it is damaged, it will no longer be possible to weld the bar on the other side.

Wedge type ceiling molding

This fastening system is the most difficult to install, but it is cheaper than other models. The entire structure consists of mounting and locking strips, as well as a special spacer bead. After the initial tension of the canvas, a strip of fasteners is placed on the edge inserted into the main groove and recessed deep into it. The protruding part of the glazing bead is trimmed with a knife and covered with a decorative strip.

During installation, difficulties usually arise with tensioning the PVC sheet. During stretching, the fabric must be rethreaded several times to achieve even tension.

Ceiling molding for cam type

This method of fixation does not require additional strips or beads. The edge of the canvas is clamped with the edges of the lock, which are located at an acute angle to each other. The peculiarity of the cam lock lies in the requirements for the texture of the ceiling: it should not be smooth, since the fasteners will not be able to hold it. Therefore, this method of fixation is used only for fabric fabrics.

A stretch ceiling made using a cam system has the neatest appearance and does not require decorative strips. The main disadvantage of such fasteners is the impossibility of repair. Dismantling leads to unusability of the fabric.

Comment! It is better to entrust the choice of the type of mechanism for fixing the canvas to the person who will do the installation. Otherwise, difficulties will arise in your work.

Criterias of choice

The main criteria for choosing a ceiling molding:

  • Price. The most expensive are aluminum and backlit profiles.
  • Stretch ceiling area. If it is more than 20 sq. m. - only aluminum baguette can withstand.
  • Ceiling height. The type of profile design - ceiling or wall - depends on it. The material can be anything.
  • Ceiling shape. If it is curved, then an invisible PVC baguette will do. For rectangular rooms, any option is suitable.
  • The need for lighting requires the installation of a special design.
  • Demanding for decorative solutions.
  • Mounting type. It is better to install a profile with a clip lock yourself. If the film ceiling is large in area, then a harpoon mount is needed. For standard rooms you can choose any.

Installation stages

Installation of the baguette is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. The work is carried out starting from the farthest corner. The profile is applied to the markings, and points are marked with a pencil through the existing holes on the wall.
  2. Holes for dowels are punched through them using a puncher.
  3. The profile is secured with self-tapping screws.
  4. Move on to the next part of the baguette, trying to minimize the distance between them.
  5. In the corners, the baguette is either attached end-to-end, or the profile is bent and cut for better passage through difficult places. Fasten the profile on both sides of the corner and in the center.
  6. After fixing the baguette, LEDs are inserted if necessary.

It is better to entrust the installation of the ceiling itself to professionals, as this requires experience and special equipment - a heat gun. Not all methods are available to home craftsmen without industrial equipment. A possible way to install suspended ceilings yourself is to install a seamless ceiling covering made of fabric. With this installation method, a cam-mounted baguette is most optimal. The ceiling tension can be adjusted if necessary. It is better not to take risks with other types of ceilings, so as not to spoil the expensive material.

The decorative baguette is glued after installing the ceiling covering on liquid nails or PVC.

$ Cost

The cost of baguettes may vary depending on the material and manufacturer’s prices. By purchasing a stretch ceiling baguette in bulk, you can save a lot of money. Approximate price for a baguette for PVC suspended ceilings (prices in USD per 1 m):

  • length up to 500m – 0.52 USD;
  • length from 500m to 1000m – 0.49 USD;
  • length from 1000m to 5000m – 0.46 USD;
  • length from 5000m to 10000m – 0.40 USD;
  • length from 10000m – negotiable;

The price will vary depending on the mounting option for the cornice:

  • an ordinary ceiling cornice is inexpensive - about 9 USD, but its installation will cost about 45 - 65 USD;
  • aluminum profile cornice for curtains on a suspended ceiling costs from 20 to 95 USD. If the future design is simple, you may not have to spend more;
  • installation of a hidden cornice will cost the owners approximately 65 USD.
