Characteristics of anti-claw fabric for sofas, main varieties

Owners of furry pets are familiar with the problem when a cat or dog scratches the upholstery of the sofa with sharp claws. Sometimes animals manage to tear the upholstery along with the foam rubber, and then the sofa takes on an extremely unpresentable appearance. Of course, no one is going to get rid of their pets because of this, however, measures must be taken.

Otherwise, all the upholstered furniture in the house may become damaged. There is an excellent solution to this problem - purchase a sofa with anti-vandal upholstery. This is one of the recent scientific developments that gives the fabric unique properties and resistance to scratching by sharp objects. In the article we will look in detail at the features of anti-vandal fabric, tell you what it comes in, find out the manufacturers of this miracle material, as well as approximate prices for it.

Peculiarities

Let’s find out what characteristics allow us to call this material “vandal-proof”.

Extremely high wear resistance. Anti-vandal upholstery is very difficult, almost impossible to damage with anything. The fabric does not wear out over time. Over the years, unsightly, characteristic bald spots will not form on your sofa in the places where you sit most often.

Even sharp cat claws cannot damage this upholstery. Therefore, you can enjoy communication with your beloved pet without fear for expensive furniture.

A feature of this process from the usual upholstery change is the use of special material.

It is a non-woven pile furniture fabric that is created using the applicative method using natural or synthetic pile, glued to a durable base.

It turns out that the claw of a cat or dog, even if it catches on a lint, will be able to tear off only one of it, which will be completely unnoticeable on the surface of the material. It is practically impossible to make any snags or scratches on it.

In principle, any sufficiently dense or smooth fabric can be considered as anti-vandal - one where the cat cannot catch its claw. What types of upholstery materials can we classify as anti-vandal?

The so-called "relaxation" . This is one of the latest developments; it is an artificial polymer-based material.

Anti-vandal relax fabric can be washed and has particularly high strength characteristics.

Artificial suede for furniture is durable and dense and can protect your furniture from the sharp claws of animals. A suede sofa immediately gives a certain status to any room. You can also learn about the difference between natural suede and artificial suede by following the link.

Artificial suede looks extremely elegant, noble and “expensive” in the finished product.

Furniture weaving – Flock. This Teflon-impregnated fabric, called “anti-claw,” is now becoming extremely popular due to its unique characteristics. Teflon flock, along with its anti-vandal characteristics, retains the softness and comfort of ordinary material.

Dense furniture corduroy is practically not subject to deformation. Also a good option if you don’t want to purchase fabrics with artificial impregnation.

Chenille is one of the most affordable and, at the same time, quite good options as an anti-vandal material against cats.

Anti-vandal Chenille fabric is dense and resistant to “cat vandalism”.

Among them:

  • long service life;
  • high abrasion resistance;
  • repels dirt, grease and dust.

Ordinary lint-free fabrics - dense, rather rigid - can also act as anti-vandal.

This is, for example, a tapestry. This beautiful material, thanks to its unique density, increased rigidity and smoothness of weaving, withstands cat “attacks”. A prerequisite is that such “vandal-proof” materials must be smooth so that the cat has nothing to cling to, and the fibers in the fabric structure must lie very tightly to each other.

Attention: if you are choosing anti-vandal fabric for the first time, it is better to use the tips and advice of an experienced consultant. It is also important when purchasing to carefully study the properties of the fabric you are purchasing. In this case, you are much more likely to buy a quality product.

Anti-claw. Let's talk about the features of this popular anti-vandal upholstery material.

This fabric has increased strength and wear-resistant characteristics. The name “anti-claw” can be given to Teflon flock, Teflon-impregnated microfiber, artificial suede, or Scotch guard. Also see photos of microfiber sofas here.

The special “anti-claw” material is made in such a way that when an animal tries to scratch it, its claws slide off without leaving any marks. After several attempts, as a rule, the cat’s interest in the sofa completely disappears.

More fabric properties:

  • “Anti-claw” is a very dense material, due to which it practically does not wear out and lasts a long time.
  • The fibers of the fabric are often intertwined, which ensures its density and strength, and resistance to deformation.
  • The material, despite the anti-vandal artificial impregnation, “breathes”, which allows you to provide the proper microclimate.
  • The surface is pleasant to the touch, it is comfortable to sit on such a sofa.
  • A variety of different colors allows you to choose a vandal-proof coating to suit any interior. Whatever style the apartment is decorated in, even the most intricate one, suitable upholstery material will be found in this case too.

Flock "anti-claw"

For the most part, in the category of “anti-claw” fabrics there are various types of flock with a smooth texture. The structure of this material is dense, there is a smooth base inside, and a pile outside. An animal's claw cannot cause any damage to the pile, and it simply slides off the smooth surface of the base material. It is impossible to put a catch or tear the fabric.

Flock of the “anti-claw” category is a fabric obtained not by weaving, but by special gluing and subsequent application of pile using the method of static electricity. The technology is quite complex and provides reliable protection of the fabric from the sharp claws of a pet. This material can be washed and dry cleaned.

The composition of anti-vandal flock is as follows: 35% cotton, 65% polyester. The pile is nylon. The material “breathes”, having a high level of breathability. Since the base of the material is cotton, the air circulates perfectly without encountering obstacles.

The surface of the fabric has water-repellent properties. Even if you accidentally spill something on the sofa, the water will collect in a drop without immediately being absorbed into the upholstery. During this time, it can be easily collected and removed.

An important advantage is that the fabric is able to maintain the brightness of its color almost all the time it is used. It does not fade, does not fade in the sun, and does not lose its decorative qualities. At the same time, the colors of anti-vandal flock can be any - from light, delicate to rich and bright.

Fabric production

Although microvelor is similar to velor in appearance, the method of its production is much more similar to creating flock, as well as an artificial type of suede. The fibers are secured thanks to a specialized composition with adhesive properties. As a result, the glue creates fixation and a porous base. The stitches create a structure of a non-standard type, it looks like a honeycomb. This shape helps the material maintain a high level of strength. The glue allows the fabric to remain elastic. Fiber crushed to the required degree is poured on top of the glue layer.

The electrostatic field gives a strong bond; the pile undergoes a chemical reaction, which results in the placement of fibers. They puff up and are located perpendicular to the base layer. Standard velor also has stitches on the base (fabric), micro-velor does not have them.

The fibers used are polyester, polyamide or cotton. In order for microvelour to be able to reject water and dirt, manufacturers impregnate it with a Teflon compound.

Description of fabric

The attractive appearance of microvelor is undeniable; the material is also very pleasant to the touch, and is similar to expensive and noble types of materials. Even direct exposure to sunlight will not have a detrimental effect on the saturation of the shade; it lasts for the entire period of use. Comparing with similar types of fabrics, we can highlight the affordable cost of microsuede. For this reason, the material is used very widely.

Positive traits

The material is very comfortable when using furniture; the porous structure allows air to circulate normally. Microvelor belongs to the category of environmentally friendly materials; it is also antistatic. With such upholstery, furniture will not attract dust pollution.

It is produced in a wide range of colors and does not lose color over the years. The durability and strength of the fabric are high, so rapid wear and tear is not typical for it.

Hypoallergenicity is also a big plus; even immediately after production, the material does not emit concentrated chemical odors. People prone to allergies can use this material for upholstery. The coating does not suffer from moisture, and the beautiful design, structure and variety of shades allow you to create very beautiful furniture.

Microvelor can be decorated with patterns, drawings, and be of varying degrees of brightness.

Cleaning micro velor

If micro-velor is used as removable covers, then delicate washing can be done. Cleaning using a vacuum cleaner, soft brushes and sponges is acceptable. The vacuum cleaner is turned on at minimum power, only soft attachments can be used. Some areas become dented over time and look different from the rest of the coating. In this case, steaming is performed, but it is prohibited to touch the microvelour with the iron.

Stains and other types of dirt are removed with a soft sponge, and detergents are used, but only water-based. Gasoline, alcohol, solvents are prohibited; all chemical compounds will ruin the adhesive base and the pile will be wiped off. Cleaning microsuede should be gentle.

If there are ingrained or old stains, it is not allowed to rub vigorously or soak with various compounds for a long time. All this will damage the upholstery.

After cleansing, blow-drying and heating are not recommended; drying should occur naturally at a standard temperature. Sometimes you need to comb the villi, straighten them, and remove pellets.

You can remove stains from the sofa with a soap solution. To do this, moisten a napkin in the solution, hold it on the cloth for a while, and then wash off the dirt using the solution. Regular cleaning of micro-suede is carried out using the dry method (vacuum cleaner) or with a brush.

What does the category “anti-claw” mean?

Anti-vandal upholstery is called upholstery that is resistant to various types of dirt, abrasion, cuts and scratches. These properties can be achieved in various ways, but the most common is Teflon impregnation. Partially, such materials include anti-claw fabric, the main requirements for which are resistance to cuts and scratches, as well as to the pulling of fibers from the structure of the fabric. These properties are primarily possessed by fabrics impregnated with Teflon, but the same effect can be achieved using other technological methods, for example, a dense fabric structure. Therefore, several dissimilar materials are classified as “anti-claw” materials. The most common among them are:

  1. Flock with a Teflon layer.
  2. Relax fabrics.
  3. Microfiber.
  4. Faux suede.
  5. Scotchgard et al.

They all have different structures and characteristics, but are reliable in operation and easy to care for.

Several recommendations for choosing and caring for anti-vandal fabric.

Any type of anti-vandal material requires its own special care. All operating, washing, and cleaning conditions are on the product tag. Pay special attention to this when making a purchase.

Velor upholstery, as a rule, is washed even at a temperature of 60 degrees. And if the cover is not removable, then the velor can be cleaned well with a vacuum cleaner. Flock upholstery requires careful handling, as its adhesive base can be damaged by too intense wet cleaning.

From time to time it is recommended to clean the anti-vandal upholstery with a vacuum cleaner. This will rid your sofa of accumulated dust and freshen it up.

Attention: we advise you not to rely entirely on anti-vandal fabric if the animal in the house is not even equipped with a scratching post. In this case, the cat has no choice - and she will periodically return to the sofa. And sooner or later it can ruin even specially treated upholstery. Therefore, it is better to purchase a special device for your animal, where she can sharpen her claws to her heart’s content.

How to care

Each type of anti-vandal coating requires appropriate care. Washing and cleaning instructions are usually indicated on the label and should be strictly followed. For example, velor should be washed at a temperature no higher than +60 °, and chlorine bleaches should not be used for jacquard. The only thing used when cleaning any type of upholstery is a vacuum cleaner. With its help, you can quickly and easily remove dust, which will add color and refresh the appearance. All cleaning and detergents are used in full accordance with the care requirements.

All anti-vandal fabrics must be protected from sunlight. If it is not possible to put the furniture in a protected place, you should draw the curtains more often. Anti-claw materials are not recommended to be ironed. When choosing a fabric, you should consider not only its type and properties, but also read the accompanying documents. Feedback from other consumers who have cats in their homes may also be helpful.

Reviews

Let's see what those who have already acquired furniture with anti-vandal upholstery say.

  • Elena, 46 years old, Moscow. “I am a cat breeder. You can imagine what the situation is like at home. Four adult cats live in it at the same time, and kittens appear constantly. I don't keep cats in cages, they are family members. Previously, furniture, of course, suffered; sofas and armchairs could be thrown away after a year of service. Even though animals have scratching posts, they are never averse to scratching the upholstery. After purchasing furniture upholstered in anti-vandal material, life became much easier. Cats, of course, try to scratch the sofa, but they fail - their claws simply slide off. It's very funny to watch this. Now my home is finally in order. I recommend it to anyone who still has the same problem.”
  • Polina, 28 years old, Sochi: “My cat is a beloved, but very spoiled creature. Loves to sharpen his claws on the sofa. Of course, this makes the furniture look terrible. I was advised to purchase furniture covers made from anti-vandal material. I bought it and now I don’t have any problems. The cat tried to sharpen its claws on the sofa several times, but nothing worked. Now she has completely lost interest in him. I’m glad: the cat uses the scratching post and the furniture is in order.”

Features of caring for anti-vandal fabrics

In order for the material to remain beautiful for a long time, you need to know some features:

  • Proper care of the material extends the life of the entire product. The possibility of cleaning with chemicals is clarified at the time of purchasing the furniture.
  • If the anti-claw fabric is not to be washed or wet cleaned, dry stain removers and aerosols should be used. After some time, the foam applied to the dirt turns into a powder that can be easily cleaned from the surface with a brush.
  • The use of traditional cleaning products in the form of baking soda, vinegar or ammonia should be tried on the back of the sofa in an inconspicuous place.

Important! If the design of the furniture allows, you can use capes or covers made of anti-vandal fabric.

The material has care features that must be taken into account when purchasing and using. Little household members present parents with many surprises - a flock sofa can be easily cleaned of baby puree or fruit juice. When starting cleaning, make sure the water is not too hot. Cleaning with a damp sponge won't hurt, but trying to wash away stains with hot water can damage the structure and elasticity of the adhesive layer. This selectivity is compensated by resistance to dozens of types of contaminants.

General characteristics of furniture upholstery

When you go to the store to buy a new sofa, or when choosing new “clothes for an old friend,” you should take into account certain quality indicators.

Conventionally, manufacturers divide upholstery fabrics for upholstered furniture into several categories, knowing which it is much easier for the consumer to make their choice:

  1. The first three categories consist of flock (such as Santorini), chenille, thermal jacquard, cotton, corduroy, suede and tapestry. They are divided into thin (lightweight), denser and textured, respectively.
  2. Next come heavy and strong tapestries and suedes with intricate printed designs.
  3. A special type is made up of samples containing natural and plant fibers.
  4. A number of inexpensive materials include leatherette and artificial “eco” leather.
  5. More expensive upholstery includes genuine leather.
  6. Closing the chain, a new product is anti-vandal upholstery fabric. This category contains materials such as flock, courtesan, microfiber, Scotchgard, “relax” and artificial suede.
