To make the interior look harmonious, you need to choose canvases that will be combined with all elements of the room
Curtains occupy a very important place in the interior. At the moment, there are so many types of curtains that it can be very difficult to choose the right option for yourself. To help you decide on the color, design, and method of attaching such apartment design elements, we will provide a list of the most popular types.

How to choose the type of curtains

Curtains are of great importance in creating coziness in an apartment. They not only make the interior brighter and more complete, but also hide from prying eyes everything that happens in your home. Curtains also function as light control.

In order for the interior to look harmonious, you need to make sure that the curtains are combined with its main components in color and style. However, first of all, you will have to understand what types of curtains there are and how they interact with different designs.

You also need to decide what you need to consider when choosing curtains. There are only four parameters here.

What to consider when choosing curtains:

  1. Window and room size. This parameter indicates that long, heavy curtains greatly reduce the amount of free space in the room, while short curtains, on the contrary, expand it.
  2. It is also very important to consider the style of the interior. For modern apartments it is better to choose more laconic options.
  3. The color of the curtains also plays an important role. Using the shade of curtains, you can make the interior brighter, or vice versa, calm it down.
  4. Decorative elements on curtains can add chic to a room, or, on the contrary, change it for the worse. This mainly applies to lambrequins and other decorative items.

Taking into account all these parameters, you can create an interior that will be admired by all household members. Remember that any detail can radically change the design of the room.

To make your living room interior complete and exclusive, you need to choose the right curtains. All tips are on our website:

How to sew a one-sided curtain with your own hands

We bring to your attention instructions on how to sew asymmetrical curtains in the kitchen, living room, hall or bedroom, similar to those shown in the photo below.

In the photo there are one-sided curtains in the bedroom without a lambrequin, but with its visibility

To sew curtains, you need to start with the bottom fabric. Everything is done using a pattern. The length is determined as desired, but the width usually has to be taken twice as large as the horizontal length of the window. The bottom cut needs to be finished with a tight zigzag stitch or a roller stitch (if, of course, you have one on your sewing machine). You need to attach a curtain tape to the top edge.

In order to sew curtains for the kitchen, living room, hall or bedroom with your own hands, you will need at least two times the width of the fabric (the wider the fabric, the more magnificent the design will be). The curtain tape should be stitched to the top edge. Both the lower and upper sections need to be sewn in the same spirit as the first option. After this, you can begin making beveled drapery.

To determine the location of the bias drapery, we hang the curtain on the cornice and tie it with ribbon or rope in the place we need. From the inside, the points are marked, after which the canvas needs to be laid out and these points connected with chalk.

Asymmetrical lambrequin in the bedroom

The drawstring for the cord can be made with your own hands in different versions:

  1. The bias tape is sewn along the line into which the rope is threaded. The ends are connected and then secured to the last hook. The cord is stretched to the desired amount.
  2. The trim can be replaced by the same curtain tape. In this case, the structure becomes uniform.
  3. An elastic band is threaded into the drawstring, which is used to regulate the volume in the belts. It should also have holes for buttons. You can change the size of the gathering by sewing a button on the top edge.

Curtain with eyelets for the living room or hall

As you can see, sewing a one-sided bias curtain with your own hands is not difficult. All that remains is to go over it with an iron. With all that has been said, we can only add that asymmetrical curtains are a complex and very elegant element of the interior. If you choose them correctly, the decoration of your room (most often they choose a bedroom, living room, hall or kitchen) will be positively changed and stylistically complete.

What types of window curtains are there: divide by design

The first parameter by which curtains are divided is their design. New and new varieties of curtains appear all the time, so we will describe only the most popular of them.

Types of curtains by design:

  1. Blinds are curtains consisting of thin slats. Previously, such canvases were used only to decorate office windows, but now there are options that fit perfectly into modern residential interiors.
  2. Roller blinds are loved by millions for their variety of designs. They can be made from different materials and have any color. These curtains got their name due to the fact that, if necessary, you can lift them to the top of the window frame by rolling them into a roll.
  3. Roman blinds amaze with their variety of designs. They usually match the size, length and width of the glass part of the window frame. Such designs also have the ability to adjust the lighting. To use this feature, you just need to pull the string. Under the influence of the lifting mechanism, the curtain will rise, folding like an accordion.
  4. Japanese curtains consist of panels covered with fabric. They do not have warehouses and move along guides. Such interior elements are called Japanese because in the east they are used as room dividers.
  5. Classic curtains are rectangular sheets of fabric. They hang on the eaves and fall in even folds.
  6. French curtains consist of one large canvas, into which lifting type tapes are threaded. Such curtains form beautiful folds and are fixed in one position.
  7. Austrian curtains in their usual position are a long canvas gathered at the bottom with beautiful flounces. If you pull the ribbons, the design transforms into a short curtain with beautiful folds.
  8. Italian curtains consist of two canvases, which are draped using ribbons stretched diagonally.
  9. Cafe curtains are short and light. They are ideal for small apartments in a romantic style.
  10. Thread curtains look modern and original. They add airiness and uniqueness to the interior.

These are not all types of curtains. However, we have presented you with the most interesting and popular ones.

You can easily make most types of curtains with your own hands. For this you only need your imagination and patience.

All these varieties are further divided into types, according to the method of attachment to the window and the type of materials from which they are made.

By the way, classic curtains have remained in demand for many years. What is their advantage? The answer is on the next page:

Types of curtains

In addition to the variety of materials, manufacturers offer a wide selection of curtain opening mechanisms.

Sliding

Classic canvases that move horizontally along the cornice.

Curtain panels

Unlike sliding panel types of curtains, they do not have folds or flounces. Screen panels diffuse light well, so with windows facing south, you can not move the panels apart even during the day.

Lifting

These types of curtains are the most compact, as they are assembled at the top of the window either in a roll or in folds and do not take up extra space.

Smart curtains

So-called “smart” curtains. To open such curtains you don’t even have to go to the window. It will be enough just to press the remote control button and the mechanism will do everything itself.

We determine what types of curtains there are based on materials of manufacture

The materials used to make curtains also play a significant role in creating the interior. It is the texture of such paintings that gives the room design a more interesting appearance.

List with descriptions of the most popular curtain materials:

  1. For curtains such as blinds, metal or plastic is most often used. However, there are options made of fabric, wood and even paper.
  2. Winter curtains are made from heavy, dense materials that are used not only for decoration, but also to improve thermal insulation in the room. Such materials can be velvet, corduroy, tweed, plush, tapestry, brocade, muslin, etc.
  3. For modern curtains in the Greek style, as well as for roller blinds, environmentally friendly materials such as linen, cotton and chintz are very often used. There are also roller blinds made of bamboo.

The material from which the curtain is made is of great importance. For example, classic designs love luxurious heavy fabrics.

Types of curtains according to the method of fastening

Curtains can also be attached to a variety of fasteners. The design of blinds, Roman and roller blinds assumes that they will be installed on a frame using special brackets and other elements. We need to talk separately about fastenings of fabric panels.

Types of fastening fabrics:

  • Ties:
  • Loops;
  • Eyelets;
  • Rings;
  • Magnets;
  • Drawstrings;
  • Braid.

Most fabric curtains are attached to the curtain rod using loops. Previously, they were sewn on, each separately, but now they use special curtain tapes that already have the required number of loops.

Attaching the curtain to the cornice can be hidden behind a beautiful lambrequin. Lambrequins can be hard or fabric.

You can also use multi-level cornices. They have multiple platforms for curtains. With the help of such designs, you can hang several types of curtains on the windows. For example, tulle and Italian curtains.

Types of curtains for different interiors

Curtains should be chosen depending on the style of the interior. Otherwise, you will not be able to set one tone for the room.

Elements such as metal and plastic blinds fit perfectly into the high-tech style. They will emphasize the modernity of this design and add convenience to the room. To prevent the room from looking too formal, you can use vertical rather than horizontal blinds.

For interiors in Art Nouveau style, roller blinds or Roman blinds are suitable. It is better if they are made using natural materials. Products made of wood and bamboo look especially interesting.

You can experiment with the shape and texture of curtains by combining crossed curtains of different shades and densities in your interior.

The rustic country style is perfectly complemented by short curtains with a simple pattern. These can be canvases made from natural materials, decorated with small flowers or checkered patterns.

It is better to decorate classic interiors with large, heavy curtains made of noble materials. Such luxurious canvases can be complemented with an equally elaborate lambrequin.

Curtains have always been one of the main elements of the interior, and lambrequins are such an element for curtains. More about this in the following material:

Application in the interior

Bedroom

In the bedroom, thick curtains on one side length to the floor will look good. Such curtains are appropriate in rooms with high or standard ceilings. If the room has low ceilings, you should choose curtains that reach the length of the window sill. The composition should be complemented with dark roller blinds; they will provide protection from the sun's rays and prying eyes.

Living room

A one-sided curtain with lambrequins and a contrasting bottom curtain will fit perfectly into a classic-style living room. An original and functional solution is a one-sided white curtain with eyelets. When assembled with tiebacks, it will effectively decorate the interior, and when unfolded it will protect from the sun's rays.

Children's

A one-sided curtain is a good solution for a children's room. It will not interfere with air circulation and penetration of sunlight, and will make the interior airy and light. If this is a girl's room, then pink, purple and lilac colors are suitable. If the owner of the room is a boy - blue, blue and brown curtains.

Kitchen

The kitchen window is most often decorated with one-sided curtains. This is a very practical solution, as it allows you to position the canvas further from the stove and work surfaces. Light curtains do not weigh down the room and provide good air access. You can add any lifting curtains: Roman, French or Austrian, for example. From prints you can take: polka dots, stripes, checks, flowers.
