Varieties of lambrequins
The product is a rectangular piece of fabric that is attached to the curtain rod on top of the curtain. Even a novice master can handle sewing.
Enough:
- Measure the width of the window opening or the length of the cornice.
- Increase the resulting figure by at least 30% (to get a beautiful assembly).
- Cut out 2 rectangles - for the front and back sides of the lambrequin.
- Sew the resulting parts together.
However, there are other decorative elements.
Soft
Lambrequins are pieces of fabric gathered into soft folds. This is a whole group of products that can differ in styles and sizes.
Such models are hung with fairly thick curtains in spacious rooms with high ceilings. But if you choose the right product, they also look good in a room with a standard ceiling height.
Hard
If soft lambrequins, like curtains, regulate the penetration of sunlight into a room, then hard models perform mainly a decorative function. They are sewn straight, without folds. Often they are an openwork ribbon made in a factory.
But the simplest rectangular models - “bandeau”, resembling a wide ribbon, are glued from the inside with a special material - doublerin.
Combined
This type of lambrequins is a combination of individual elements of soft products with hard ones. Models can be complemented with decorative cords, tassels and other accessories.
Photos in the interior
Velcro curtains can be sheer or thick, depending on the fabric chosen. They darken the room better because there is no free space between the curtain and the window.
Balcony or loggia
Velcro curtains are often used to cover windows on balconies and loggias. This is a convenient and economical way to hide a room from sunlight and views from the street through the rational use of material. A curtain with Velcro is a convenient option for decorating a door to a balcony, since there is no cornice or hanging fabric above it, the curtain does not touch the curtain when leaving and the passage remains free.
Kitchen
Velcro curtains are suitable for the kitchen if the window is located above the sink or stove, and also if the window sill will be actively used as a shelf or an additional workplace.
Children's
Velcro curtains made of thick fabric are suitable for the nursery; this will ensure a sound daytime sleep for the child.
Living room
In the living room, ordinary curtains or tulle can be supplemented with curtains that are attached to the window frame with Velcro. Japanese Velcro curtains will look good in a small living room.
Bedroom
For the bedroom, translucent Roman blinds with Velcro or thick ones with a jacquard pattern are suitable. The uniqueness of such curtains is that they fit any bedroom style.
Types of soft
In the interior of residential premises, soft curtains are often used. There are many varieties of them, and it is easy for owners to choose the most suitable option.
Swags
They are semicircular parts assembled into slightly sagging drapery elements. They are attached to the cornice using curtain tape, which makes it easier to assemble the folds.
Swags are used in interiors decorated in a classical style; they are not suitable for minimalism.
Step-by-step sewing of a swag looks like this:
- First they take measurements. You need to know the width and height of the window opening, the length of the cornice.
- Make a calculation. For swag, such indicators as depth (the degree of sagging of the drapery), length (the segment that the product will occupy on the cornice), shoulder (side part) are important. The most popular are equilateral swags, both arms of which are the same length.
- They build a swag pattern taking into account its shape. For an equilateral element, the pattern is made based on a square.
- Cut out the product blank, taking into account seam allowances.
- The parts of the swag are sewn together taking into account the characteristics of the fabric from which it is made.
Tie
This element is also called déjabot, or frill. It is a vertical drapery of a spiral shape. This lambrequin resembles an old tie that can be seen in historical portraits. It can be cascading or helical, with counter folds. "Ties" can be combined with swags.
Coquille
The element is often associated with women's dresses or blouses, but lambrequins can also have this shape. This is a strongly flared circle or oval, which is cut out in a spiral, carefully working out the edges. Both single and double molds look beautiful.
Buffs
The window decor element is a piece of fabric that forms three-dimensional assemblies of various shapes. They are secured using hand or machine stitching.
Bell
This is not a full-fledged lambrequin, but a detail of window decoration - a small element with draperies reminiscent of a bell.
Loggia or balcony: how to attach curtains with Velcro
Today it is customary to use a balcony or loggia as a living space, which often turns into another makeshift room. In addition to other fastening methods, loggia curtains can be installed with Velcro.
Velcro curtains are often used to cover windows on balconies and loggias.
However, their use requires compliance with additional conditions that will ensure the strength and reliability of the curtains.
Do-it-yourself Velcro curtains for the balcony have a certain difficulty in installation, since the windows installed here reach the very top, and they can be strengthened with great difficulty. It is impossible to install a cornice, curtains on nails are not aesthetically pleasing, and the most effective and aesthetic way would be to use Velcro.
Types of hard
The structures are made using different techniques. They are often a factory-made product, but sometimes they are also made at home.
Openwork
The simplest option is an openwork stripe. Sometimes an intricate pattern is cut into it using a laser. In this case, the drawing can be made in any style. Such lambrequins are made from lace, denser fabric, incl. felt.
With a straight, curly edge
Basically we are talking about strip, or strip, lambrequins. Such models can be hung even in rooms with low ceiling heights. They are often made from coupon roll material, with a pattern repeated along the entire length.
Cut the products in the form of 2 rectangles of the same length, leaving seam allowances on each. Separately, cut out a rectangle from cushioning material - doublerin or non-woven fabric with an adhesive base, which will help fix the rigid shape. Such lambrequins do not form folds.
In addition, there are plank structures made of rolled material with a curved edge - they look impressive.
Other options
Using Velcro tape you can visually isolate or partition a room. To do this, a block with Velcro attached to it is screwed to the ceiling. By “gluing” a curtain fabric that goes down to the floor to it with Velcro, you will get a visually isolated room. This way you can fence off a bed located in a common room, or create an impromptu screen for changing clothes.
On plastic windows, you can not even mount a wooden block, but hang the curtains directly, either on the window sash, or in the opening by gluing Velcro tape, or along the upper edge of the corner framing the window opening, or to its side parts.
Of course, you shouldn’t use “liquid nails” glue for this. It is much better to use white acrylic sealant for fastening, which, if necessary, can be easily removed from the plastic profile when the need for such improvised curtains is no longer necessary. This must be done with a plastic spatula so as not to scratch the window.
You can use Velcro tape to secure it to the ends of the strips sewn to the top edge of the curtain; these strips, wrapped around the curtain rod, form loops. In this case, the curtain can be moved freely, opening the window, as with the usual method of hanging on hooks or grommets.
Choosing a cornice for a lambrequin
For any product it is important to choose the right cornice. In this case, the same elements are selected as for curtains, i.e. they are wall and ceiling.
In each of the categories, several additional varieties can be distinguished. For example, there are profile cornices, “rod” models and strings. The latter are rarely used for attaching lambrequins, especially when it comes to lush, soft models such as swags, molds or puffs.
More often, either ceiling cornices hidden behind the plank or round rods are used.
Peculiarities
Before you become familiar with the methods of attaching lambrequins, you need to understand what these products are. Textiles are one of the decorative elements of drapery. Basically, lambrequins are located in a horizontal position on top of the curtains.
The products are used on massive thick curtains that decorate spacious rooms.
Often, various elements are used to decorate the lambrequins themselves. These include:
- fringe;
- ribbons;
- tassels.
Most often, textile products are used as a complement to classic interiors. It is known that this trend is pretentious and loves various decorative elements that can fully emphasize the expensive furnishings.
Today there are several main types of lambrequins:
- The most popular options include soft models that
are easy to attach. Basically, the same fabric from which other window design elements are made is used for sewing. These lambrequins are attached to curtains or cornices. - But rigid lambrequins
need a strong frame for fixation. For more convenient fastening, an element such as Velcro is used. - A universal type can be called combined models
that combine the features of the two previous options. In this case, soft elements are used as a complement to the hard base.
How to attach a lambrequin to a cornice
This decorative element must be properly fixed, otherwise the calculations and efforts to manufacture the product will be in vain.
Velcro
To fix rigid structures, special Velcro is used. In this case, you need to measure the tape along the upper border of the lambrequin. It is fixed with the sticky side to the outer edge, and a special adhesive composition is used on the inside.
Tapes with loops
Tapes or loops can be used for lambrequins. The first ones are strips of the same fabric from which the curtains themselves are sewn. They can be tied in different ways, incl. bows, attach to the cornice using loops sewn from the same fabric as the lambrequin.
Making a homemade curtain rod with Velcro
If you don't want to spend money on buying a curtain rod equipped with Velcro tape, you can make one yourself.
To do this, you will need a wooden block 15-20 cm longer than the width of the window, Velcro tape of the same length (its hard part with hooks), “liquid nails” mounting adhesive or acrylic sealant, 3-4 plastic dowels and the same amount self-tapping screws of suitable length.
First, determine the height at which the homemade cornice will be fixed.
It can be fixed either directly on the wall - if the curtains are planned to be short - to the level of the upper edge of the window sill, or on brackets with a distance of 15-20 cm, if the curtains are long, so that hanging freely, they do not touch the window sill.
Velcro tape is glued onto a wooden block, pre-treated with fine sanding paper and coated with varnish or stain, and secured with staples from a construction stapler for secure fastening. You can screw the block with self-tapping screws directly through the Velcro tape.
You can first strengthen the block, and only then stick tape on it or secure it with staples. But this option is less convenient.
The soft part of the Velcro tape is sewn to the upper edge of the prepared curtain fabric using a sewing machine. All that remains is to attach the top edge of the curtain to the cornice, and the curtain will instantly be securely fixed.
This method of fastening with Velcro is static and using curtains that are not equipped with an opening mechanism is inconvenient. Therefore, simultaneously with fixing the curtains with Velcro, they are equipped with a lifting and lowering mechanism.
How to hang a lambrequin on a cornice
This depends on both the type of fabric and the type of cornice.
To the ceiling
Adhesive tape is most often used. For reliability, it is coated with glue on the inner (soft) side: this way it will be attached to the underside of the drapery. You can use clear fishing line instead.
On the round
Tapes and loops are used. They look impressive and will become part of the decor.
On double
A special adhesive tape will do. Often in such cases, a flexible profile is additionally installed - the structure is attached to it using tape, and the front forged cornice or strip covers the joint.
To tubular
They mainly use special fasteners that come with the structure itself, or they can be purchased separately.
Velcro curtains, description, fastening features, design options
Velcro - that's what it's officially called - has proven its effectiveness. With its help, you can install curtains without cornices on plastic and wooden windows. They are especially convenient to use in small rooms, where the cornice may look bulky, and a curtain that does not fit closely to the wall makes the room visually even smaller.
Using Velcro for small windows allows you to get rid of bulky curtain rods
What is Velcro
This type of fastening is used quite widely: in the manufacture of garments, shoes, accessories and other goods. It consists of two tape elements: on one there are microhooks, and on the other there are the same small loops. When both tapes touch, the hooks cling to the loops, sticking tightly to each other.
Rules for caring for a lambrequin
Hard products can be vacuumed using a special attachment - it is also used for furniture. Soft lambrequins can be washed, but not often. For these purposes, a weak soap solution is used, without bleaches or other aggressive chemicals. You need to follow the fabric manufacturer's instructions, be especially careful with light fabrics - veil or chiffon.
It is important to dry the elements properly. This can be done naturally by leaving them hanging on the rope for several days and not ironing them afterwards. Then it is easier to assemble the product into soft folds.
Beautiful window decoration with curtains
There are a huge number of ways to beautifully decorate windows using curtains. Therefore, it is easy to choose an option to suit the style of any room and your preferences.
Eyelets
The eyelets are a modern look, and special rings are sewn into the curtains. Designed only for tubular curtain rods. With their help, uniform waves are formed on the curtains, creating an original interior. Ideal for heavy fabrics. Eyelets look great in the living room, kitchen, bedroom.
Roll models
Roller blinds are an excellent solution for the kitchen. They look laconic, do not block the window sill, and easily rise to the desired height. In addition, they are ideal for apartments located on the ground floor, as they block prying eyes. Today they are very popular.
Waves and lambrequins
A romantic option is curtains with waves that go down to the floor. You can use drawstrings, they will cover the cornice. The wider the section, the more beautiful and luxuriant the waves will be. It’s not difficult to make them yourself; you need to sew on the braid, while gathering the fabric into folds. They look original if you add such curtains with a lambrequin. This decorative element is used to decorate large windows.
Asymmetrical designs
Asymmetrical curtains are always spectacular and extravagant, and they look original. There are many ways to create them:
- lambrequin that falls diagonally;
- an extended curtain on one side of the window opening;
- a long curtain that continues like a lambrequin.
Symmetrical curtains
Symmetrical curtains are a classic. When choosing this option, you should pay attention to the size of the room. For a small area - light and airy fabric, for large rooms - thick curtains. Mirror symmetry involves placing the curtains equally, relative to the center of the window. There is complex symmetry, it involves three curtains.
Multilayer curtains
In rooms with high ceilings and large windows, you can give free rein to your imagination and hang a multi-layered version. This composition will be the center and decoration of the room. This can be tulle with curtains and lambrequin.
A complex lambrequin with lots of draperies and lush cascades will look great in a hall or dining room. Roller blinds and curtains with folds are perfect for the bedroom.
Curtain drapery options
Drapery refers to the decoration of curtains; with their help you can add charm and elegance to the interior.
There are the following drapery methods:
- the formation of longitudinal folds, even in the process of sewing curtains (Roman, Austrian);
- various variants of folds, when the fabric does not just hang down freely, but is assembled with the help of clamps, staples, bows into unusual shapes.
Tacks can be metal, in the form of a cord with tassels, made of fabric or a string of pearls. In addition, all kinds of braid or frill will be an excellent decoration for curtains, the main thing is that they fit into the overall interior.
These drapery options will add solemnity and expressiveness not only to the windows, but to the entire design of the room.
Curtains are a great way to make your interior unique. You can experiment and fantasize with them, creating original compositions that will decorate your home.
