Many apartments use a glass display cabinet, often placed in the living room or kitchen - those places where we often spend time. If the premises do not have enough space, such exhibition cabinets can be a real boon, as they can accommodate many books, decorative elements or dishes. But a glass display cabinet can also be used to zone a room. It is necessary to consider various options before making the final choice, since there are several main variations of cabinets with glass, all of them cannot be used in an existing interior, and a correctly selected cabinet with glass display cases will give the room a special atmosphere.

Purpose and features

Modern fashion influences all aspects of human life. This also applies to furniture. Wardrobes have undergone various changes over their long history, for example, bulky shutters were replaced by neat doors, massive ledges by light shelves. Ultimately, the wooden doors were replaced with a glass display case. For the first time, such designs appeared in French houses, where it was customary to show guests numerous collections of marvelous porcelain, weapons and various curiosities that were brought from different parts of the world. Over time, this led to the fact that such display cabinets began to enjoy considerable popularity and were installed not only in the kitchen or dining room. Today, such display cases are in great demand, and they are made both in the old style and focusing on the latest technologies and modern design trends.

The presence of such a cabinet better characterizes the status of its owner. Based on the style of the room, such furniture elements can be decorated with gilding, various inlays, and also be made of expensive wood. Such cabinets can be monolithic structures with a built-in lower chest of drawers, in which several drawers are located simultaneously. If you take proper care of the furniture, such cabinets with glass can be passed on from generation to generation. When it comes to the living room, such a piece of furniture is often installed in the opening between the windows. There are several corner models available for corners and niches.

Models that are equipped with a number of side surfaces and glass shelves look quite light and less voluminous. If the shelves are made of solid materials, they can always be replaced with glass display cases.

Today, such cabinets are installed in living rooms, as they allow you to place on their shelves many items that are dear to the owners and will definitely appeal to guests. It is also preferable to choose glass shelves and doors. The back panel is a huge mirror that visually expands the available space. Additional installation of backlights is possible. If someone in the family is involved in sports, then such display cases can be an excellent stand for prizes and awards.

How to choose the right kitchen with glass facades: an overview of materials and types of structures

Facades are furniture elements that cover the front of the building. It is their appearance that determines how beautiful the entire set looks. In many ways, the type and quality of materials from which the facades are made affect the price of furniture.

Glass and metal are in fashion. Glass facades for the kitchen are practical and look impressive. Thanks to the huge variety of textures and colors of the material, you can create a beautiful, original interior.

The main thing is to take into account the characteristics of different types of glass and make the right choice.

The secret of the popularity of glass kitchens ↑

Interiors with glass elements look elegant, sophisticated, and weightless. Such rooms have a lot of air and light, although some people find them “cool” due to shiny surfaces. The stunning appearance of kitchens with glass fronts is not the only reason why this material is chosen. He is very practical.

Original kitchen design

Kitchen interior with glass elements

Glass facades can be easily combined with elements made from other materials - natural wood, MDF, aluminum. They always look good, do not pollute the atmosphere with harmful substances, and are not afraid of moisture and high temperatures. Another plus is ease of installation and maintenance. Glass surfaces are hygienic, they do not absorb dirt, and inexpensive household chemicals are used to care for them.

Kitchen with facades made of glass and MDF

Facade glass has its drawbacks. The main one is high cost. In addition to the high cost of the material itself, you also have to overpay for special fittings. One of the features of glossy surfaces is the appearance of streaks, finger stains, etc.

Attention! When washing glass facades, you have to be careful, because... Not all chemicals are suitable (abrasives cannot be used). In addition, if you do not wipe the drops well, they will turn into new stains after drying.

Gloss and glass - a glamorous combination

What types of material are suitable for furniture ↑

There are four main types of glass used for the manufacture of facades:

  • float glass;
  • laminated;
  • hardened;
  • triplex.

Each type of material has its pros and cons. Let's take a closer look at them.

Combination of different types of facades

Clear and tinted float glass ↑

Glass facades made using float technology are cheaper than others. This type of material is not particularly common in furniture production.

The reason is that the technical and operational characteristics are worse than those of other types. The material is not particularly impact resistant, which increases risks for kitchen owners.

It should not be chosen for homes with small children.

Float glass

The advantages of float glass include its incredible smoothness. The surface of the material is perfectly smooth immediately after production.

It does not require special processing; the absence of additional technological processes has a positive effect on the price. To increase strength, manufacturers often cover sheets with a polymer film.

The material comes in two types - transparent and tinted. Decor - any.

Types of float glass

Film lamination - 2 in 1: strengthening and decoration ↑

The glass gets scratched easily. To avoid this, it is protected with special films. As a result, facades become more practical, deteriorate less, and last longer. Their appearance also changes: the film gives a matting effect.

Attention! Glass laminated with film is suitable for installation in aluminum frame facades. For slab (frameless) it is usually not used.

Frame facades

A translucent facade is a definite plus for a kitchen set. If the owner of the premises does not want to display food and household items stored in cabinets on public display, it is better to choose just such a design. Only the outlines of objects will be visible from the outside, and the “weightlessness” effect of the kitchen will remain.

Translucent fronts of wall cabinets

Triplex - a material of increased strength ↑

Glass kitchen facades made from triplex are truly reliable and safe. This is due to the production technology itself. Triplex consists of two thin glasses glued together with a thermosetting one-component polymerizing composition.

Triplex facades

The multi-layer construction is extremely durable and very difficult to break. If the material does break due to a powerful impact, the fragments do not fly apart, which reduces the risk of injury to a minimum. Thanks to these properties, triplex is perfect for creating frameless kitchen facades.

Attention! You should not be afraid that the layers of material will separate during use of the headset. This is impossible. The adhesion of glass sheets occurs at the molecular level, they become one.

Triplex in the kitchen interior

Tempered glass: safety first ↑

Tempered glass for kitchen facades is very durable. Due to its increased mechanical resistance, it is also called stalinite. If the material breaks, it breaks up into many small cubes without sharp corners. It is impossible to get hurt by such fragments. Stalinite is excellent for making frameless facades.

Shards of regular and tempered glass

However, the material also has disadvantages. It cannot be drilled or cut, so all technological holes must be made before the glass is subjected to heat treatment. Another disadvantage is the high density and mass. When assembling furniture with stalinite facades, you have to use high-quality, expensive fittings.

Ways to decorate glass facades for the kitchen ↑

When opening a catalog of glass for kitchen facades, buyers are usually lost in choice. The variety of decor is enormous. You can find dozens of design options for a headset in any style - from strict classics to Provence and hi-tech.

Let's consider the most popular technologies for decorating kitchen facades.

Wall cabinet door decor

  • Stained glass. Stained glass is often used to make cabinet front panels. This is an ideal option for rooms decorated in a classic style. Of course, the technology for making stained glass is radically different from the ancient one, when the designs were assembled from pieces of multi-colored mica, but they look no less impressive.

Stained glass frame facades

  • Fusing. The manufacturing technology is quite simple: a colored pattern is applied to a transparent layer of glass, and then the material is “baked” in an oven. The result is a durable multi-layer sheet with decor that cannot be washed off or scratched. Thanks to this technology, it is possible to create exquisite patterned facades.

Decor using fusing technique

  • Matting. Frosted glass is a beautiful and practical material. It is easier to care for than the transparent one. Its surface is roughened using a jet of sand or a special paste that dissolves the top layer of the material.
  • Sandblasting drawing. Glass catalogs for kitchen facades contain materials with amazingly beautiful designs applied using this technology. You can choose ready-made ones or order facades with a pattern according to your own sketch.

Doors with sandblasted pattern

  • Engraving. Patterns are applied to glass using a laser. The most popular decoration option is a floral ornament with flowers, leaves, and intricate curls. Engraved facades look great in neoclassical interiors.
  • Bending. Bending technology involves molding glass in a heated state. The plastic mass is bent to obtain curved shapes. The material is used to make beautiful doors for end and corner cabinets.

Engraving in a non-classical interior

Molded door with stained glass

  • Tinting. The glass is painted in bulk or covered with a special colored film. Doors made of this material are not transparent and hide the contents of kitchen cabinets well. They can be made in any shade, there are no restrictions. An additional advantage is the lower price of such glass facades compared to stained glass, because The technology itself is relatively simple.

Colored glass

The top row of cabinets with glossy colored glass doors looks elegant and weightless

Types of structures – frame and frameless ↑

Facades for kitchen units can be of two types - frameless (slab, solid) and framed. The former are doors made entirely from pieces of glass, while the latter are made from glass enclosed in a frame.

Solid glass kitchen fronts look like single sheets of material. Its edges are polished or covered with a thin metal profile. Such doors are safe, beautiful, and practical. Only high-strength glass - tempered or triplex - is suitable as a material for their manufacture.

Slab glass cabinet doors

It is more correct to call frame facades not glass, but glazed, because In them, glass acts as an insert. The frame material can be any - wood, MDF, metal. Ultra-modern kitchens made of glass and aluminum, made in high-tech, futurism, etc. styles, are very relevant.

Frame facades in a classic interior

Aluminum frames for glass are trending ↑

In recent years, the popularity of glass and aluminum kitchens has increased. Transparent, tinted, matte material with or without patterns is used as inserts. Aluminum profile can be of any color. Such headsets look great in both minimalist and classic interiors.

Designers recommend choosing light shades for the facades of wall cabinets and darker shades for floor cabinets. This simple technique helps to visually expand the space, which is especially important for cramped and narrow spaces. A good option for a small kitchen is a row of wall cabinets with light matte doors.

Profiles for kitchen doors

Advantages of kitchens made of glass and aluminum ↑

  • High temperature resistance. Aluminum frames for glass perfectly withstand the temperature conditions typical for the kitchen.
  • Moisture resistance. Wood and sawdust-based composite materials can be used to make the frame, but they can swell from moisture. Nothing like this will happen with aluminum.
  • Strength. The aluminum profile does not deform, which often happens with doors made of MDF, veneered chipboard or natural wood.
  • Ease. Aluminum is lightweight compared to other materials. The profile does not create additional load on the structure.
  • Easy to care for. Metal is as easily washed off from any kind of contaminants as plastic, but, unlike it, it does not fade in direct sunlight.
  • Expanded design potential. As a rule, kitchens with glass facades are made with a hinged or folding opening system. If aluminum glass frames are used, the doors can be made sliding. This will help save space.

Glass and aluminum hinged door

The only drawback is that the price of glass and aluminum facades for the kitchen is quite high, but these costs are quite justified.

Attention! When cleaning aluminum profiles, do not use abrasive products. Metal is very easy to scratch.

Combination of glass, aluminum and plastic

What to consider when choosing an aluminum profile ↑

  • Style. Often the aluminum profile is made in light gray color. This is an excellent option for futuristic, minimalist interiors, kitchens in modern, high-tech, and techno styles. For a classic design, painted aluminum frames that imitate wood are more suitable.

Glass and metal - the perfect combination for a modern interior

  • Combinations. The facades must be combined with the design of the kitchen apron, walls, and doors. It is desirable that, in addition to the profile, there are other metal parts in the interior.
  • Quality of fittings. A fundamentally important issue is the choice of fittings. This is not the case when you can save money. It makes sense to install good air shock absorbers.
  • Glass insert. There is a price difference between float glass and tempered glass, but it is not so great that you should choose the cheaper option. It is better to overpay for a high-quality and durable glass insert than to repair a broken door.

Ultra-modern kitchen design

Instructions for making a facade with your own hands ↑

If you wish, you can make a kitchen with glass facades with your own hands. You won’t be able to make slab doors from solid pieces of glass yourself, but it’s quite easy to assemble frame doors. The following materials and tools will be required:

  • profile made of thin high-quality aluminum or wooden slats (can be made of MDF);
  • processed glass for insertion;
  • hinges and fittings;
  • glue;
  • silicone;
  • hammer;
  • square;
  • milling cutter

Homemade kitchen fronts

Work order:

  1. First, assemble the frame. It can be aluminum, wood or made of MDF. The dimensions must match the cabinets.
  2. A glass insert is installed into the finished aluminum profile and secured with glue. In a frame made of wood or composite board, it is necessary to cut grooves to the width of the glass. In this case, the cutter is installed strictly in the center of the door. The finished grooves are filled with silicone, and glass is inserted into the profile.
  3. In a glazed profile, check the corners at the junctions of the frames. They must be straight. If there are deviations from the 90 degree angle, the glass is centered by lightly tapping with a hammer.
  4. All that remains is to install the handles and hang the finished door on the hinges. This can be done after the silicone and glue have dried. The fittings are attached to the profile, and not to the glass insert, so as not to damage the facade.

Varieties

Most young people do not know what a sideboard is, and those who do associate it with their grandmother’s cupboard. Nobody uses this furniture to decorate a modern interior, but in vain, because with the right approach this element can become a key element in the design of any living or dining room. What distinguishes it from a sideboard is the absence of an additional niche between the lower and upper parts. From above it serves as a kind of showcase not only for expensive dishes, but also for a collection of culinary recipes and rare books. Such showcases for the home are very convenient. Non-glazed or lower tiers are intended for storing bed linen. Now it is possible to equip this niche with additional shelves and drawers that will allow you to store various small things.

The following options for display cabinets can be distinguished by design and location:

  • corner - used to save space, as it is placed in corners that are most often empty. If you choose a model with backlighting, you can also increase the lighting area in the room;
  • modular – separate modules with glass allow you to zone the space or make the necessary accents. Modules can be easily swapped or arranged according to their intended purpose;
  • cabinet - acts as a separate element and can be placed in any part of the room. More often, such models are placed against the wall, since their back part is not made to be presented to the public.

According to the placement option, the models can be:

  • wall-mounted - such display windows for the home look great in kitchens. Here you can place used dishes and other necessary kitchen utensils that are used every day. Since such structures are hung on the wall, it will not be possible to place many objects in them. In addition, the wall for mounting must be strong and reliable;
  • floor – placed on the floor, most often a place near the wall is chosen for this.

Based on the functions they perform, the following types of showcases can be distinguished:

  • library;

Materials for making display cases

Each material looks different, suits different styles and has different qualities. What the furniture is made of directly affects its service life.

Tree

Natural wood is a beautiful and practical material. Expensive breeds are not afraid of anything - not water, not impacts, not temperature changes, not even fungus and mold. The only thing that can damage them is a fire or a hot iron placed on top.

Cheap breeds also last a long time, but they need to be re-processed from time to time so that they are not afraid of humidity, sun and biological irritants, and also retain their gloss.

Solid wood looks great and goes well with glass. In the case of classic styles, this is, in fact, the only possible option.

MDF

MDF is a replacement for wood in the middle price category. This is sawdust, crushed, mixed with resins and sent under a press. They are covered on top with a special film that imitates oak or any other noble species. The products last as long as the film remains intact. As long as everything is fine with her, they are not afraid of water, temperature changes and even almost do not burn.

But if it is damaged, it quickly swells and the furniture loses its attractive appearance.

Glass

There are completely glass showcases - this is an excellent solution for modern styles. The glass looks airy, and if you provide additional lighting, it looks like a large gem. It does not require complex care, is not afraid of anything and can serve for decades.

The main thing is to buy cabinets from a tempered variety or from triplex. Other glass is too fragile: it is easy to break if you accidentally touch it.

Metal

Metal frames for glass are the best solution for hi-tech and futurism. The metal is not afraid of temperature changes, does not change color in the sun, does not suffer from mechanical damage, does not dry out or rot. It has only two drawbacks - it is expensive and gives the room a strict look, making it resemble an operating room. It is necessary to correctly place accents to avoid such an effect.

Veneer

This is a thin layer of natural wood glued to plywood. It does not last as long as solid wood, but it is cheap and looks no worse.

Facade decoration

Modern display windows for the home are quite diverse. The furniture market will allow you to choose the most optimal model based on such parameters as:

  • external characteristics;
  • form;
  • height.

These parameters will allow you to choose the most organic cabinet that will fit perfectly into the existing interior of a large hall or hallway. A correctly selected shape will allow you to place it in a secluded corner, placing a huge number of different interior items there. The corners will not be empty, and all things will be located in their places. When choosing the model you like, you should pay special attention to the furniture already placed and its style. Only in this way will the furniture used look organic. All glass surfaces look great in a modern interior.

General design

A classic glass showcase is an example of wealth and luxury. Such furniture can emphasize the majesty of any room. For the manufacture of chests of drawers, exclusively expensive types of natural wood are used, additionally framed with gilding and other expensive fittings. Modern models are made from more affordable materials that only vaguely resemble natural wood. In this case, various design solutions can be used.

  • home display cases can be equipped with a plastic frame, which is best suited for everyday use;
  • the classic glass showcase has a rectangular shape and is equipped with several convenient shelves made of durable glass;
  • The display cabinets have the shape of a polyhedron with a slightly rounded top. They can be divided into several separate parts (cabinets), which can be transformed into a single structure if desired. The lower part with closing doors serves as a buffet. Such a cabinet can be equipped with drawers or massive doors. The pedestal itself has a relatively small height and is intended for storing things dear to the family;
  • For ergonomic organization, it is customary to use wall-mounted structures that occupy only walls that are rarely used. They can be placed above the surface of any furniture, decorated in different ways and according to any style;
  • the walls are not made of a closed type, which allows you to view the contents of the glass shelves from different sides. This will make it possible not only to zone the existing premises, but also to increase the overall functionality. Such hanging glass structures do not take up much space, but can decorate any room.

Design and colors of display cabinets in the interior

For each style it is necessary to select furniture in accordance with its characteristics. The modern range of cabinets will allow you to find a product for any interior, highlighting its strengths.

Modern

A metal or glass display cabinet will look good in a generalized modern style. The outline should have many sharp corners (if it is not modern, then it should, on the contrary, have very smooth shapes), and the design should have fewer decorative elements. Bright accents are acceptable: for example, a fresh flower on the top shelf or a mirror inside.

Classic

A display cabinet suitable for a classic style is definitely a chest of drawers with regular transparent glass, made of solid wood. It needs to be decorated in accordance with the characteristics of the surrounding environment: for references to the Baroque, gilded carvings and bent legs are suitable, for Gothic - black color and the absence of conspicuous decor, for English classics - impressive sizes and always books inside.

Country

In country style, only a display cabinet in the form of a chest of drawers looks good, always made of solid wood with the most ordinary glass. No anti-glare effect, stained glass, colored or frosted glass: only standard, transparent.

You should also not get carried away with wood decor: country prefers simplicity and practicality, so carvings, curls and painting are not welcome here.

Ethnic

In the ethical style of the classic - a squat cabinet, seemingly made of natural wood, with glass doors and an almost complete absence of decor. It can be painted with floral patterns, geometric patterns, or you can put a clay vase with flowers on it.

Another option is a small wall cabinet that holds dishes or trinkets.

But in general, display cabinets are not typical for ethnic styles.

Provence

In Provence, a display cabinet with dishes is a mandatory element of the living room design. It should be cute, low, a little bow-legged, with carvings and even forged elements. The main material is solid wood or MDF.

On the top shelf you can place photographs in simple frames and fresh flowers. The color of the cabinet should match the rest of the design - whitewashed ceiling, light wallpaper, wooden floor.

Loft

In a loft, a boring china cabinet is out of place - it should be a metal pencil case, inside of which there must be something interesting that reflects the owner’s hobby. For example, a collection of figurines from countries he visited, or retro car models he made.

There is no need to fill the closet with things - it should look light, airy, and fit into the overall somewhat casual style. To enhance the effect, you can backlight it from an LED strip and turn it on in the evenings, changing the color from time to time.

Retro

Retro usually imitates the twenties, and the display cabinet should fit into this time period in appearance. It should be made of wood (or at least look like it was made of wood), have transparent doors and a simple shape.

It can be high or low. In the first case, all its insides are filled with porcelain and crystal interspersed with trinkets reminiscent of the same time period. In the second, crystal is also placed in it, and at the top there are photos: friends, family, loved ones. It would be good if they were designed in the same retro style.

Metal and glass options cannot be used. But the wood can be aged using home methods, or you can immediately buy an aged one. Ideally, the cabinet should look like it was taken out of the attic, and it was very well preserved.

Minimalism

In minimalism, a display cabinet is not very appropriate: it is needed for demonstration, for emphasis, and in this style it is better to avoid this. But still, the rules of style are not commandments carved in stone, but recommendations, therefore it is quite possible to install a wardrobe in the living room. Any, as long as it doesn’t take up too much space and doesn’t weigh down the interior too much.

It is better to make it out of glass, put something bright inside, but in a single copy - not dishes, like in the kitchen, but an intricate figurine, for example.

A display cabinet is a great accent. The main thing is to fit it into the interior carefully, without disturbing the balance. If the owner himself is not sure that he will be able to do this, you can pay for a guest visit to the designer and for his expert opinion.

Inner space

Glass showcases can store any decorative elements and at the same time have a different design. True, you can only store very light things on glass shelves that are not capable of damaging the integrity of the ceilings. You can advantageously emphasize individual elements using the glare of multi-level lighting, which will paint porcelain and glass in different colors. If it is necessary to place heavy books in such a showcase with glass, then it is recommended to make the shelves wooden, while the doors can be made of glass. Mirrors that are installed instead of walls will help to visually enlarge the closet.

Backlight and main lighting

The location of such cabinets should be thought out in advance, since these areas of the room require high-quality lighting. Otherwise, the furniture will blend into the general background. Care should be taken to avoid direct sunlight, which over time will damage the protective layer of the tree. The selected lighting should be as diffused as possible. Preference should be given to interior lighting in the house. The lighting direction is selected based on what is located behind your display case. If we are talking about crystal, glass or porcelain, then the lighting should come from below. Side lighting is necessary to emphasize the volume of individual objects. If there are inscriptions, it is recommended to use overhead lighting to read them.

Glass surfaces are illuminated by LED and halogen lamps, which do not heat up as they do not have sufficient power, and do not change the appearance of the illuminated objects.

You can store any things in the display case, but it is not recommended to place heavy objects there that could damage the integrity of the glass surfaces. Often such surfaces are used for exhibitions of antique tomes (lights), souvenirs, figurines or dishes. You should not overload glass display cases, as you may lose the effect of lightness and airiness of the design.

Selection rules

What to consider when choosing a display cabinet:

  • the legs, or rather their height, must be adjustable. The weight of such furniture is large, but the floor surface is rarely perfectly flat. In this case, the service life of the cabinet will be sharply reduced, as a significant distortion will occur;
  • the chosen style of furniture should ideally match that already used in the interior. Massive wooden cabinets will not look impressive in a room decorated in a style such as hi-tech or loft;
  • modern models are equipped with lighting, so that individual decorative elements will look modern. To do this, you will need to have several outlets nearby the display case;
  • all fittings must be of the highest quality, because we are talking about regular use of showcase doors and vertical load;
  • Most homes do not have high ceilings, and the height of the cabinet can be only one and a half meters. The dimensions of the room should be taken into account first of all, otherwise the cabinet may look much more massive than in the photo or in a store where the ceiling height reaches five meters;
  • mirrors can be a great solution if the room is not too large. Correctly placed mirrors can visually expand the room;
  • all glass elements must be made exclusively from tempered glass, which is characterized by increased strength. All products are certified, so checking their quality is not difficult.

Dimensions

The size of the bookcase depends on the area of the room in which you plan to place the furniture. Large-sized models are suitable for a large spacious room, while tall, narrow and shallow ones are suitable for a medium-sized living room. For a nursery, it is better to choose a low wardrobe so that the child can use it comfortably.

To correctly determine the appropriate cabinet dimensions, you must:

  1. Calculate the volume of books to be stored.
  2. Know exactly the height of the ceiling in the room.
  3. Take into account the height of the apartment's inhabitants so that a person can easily reach the top shelf without a chair.
  4. Decide on the need to build the product into a niche (this is advisable if there are children at home).

The best models of bookcases and libraries for the home, unusual designs

The recommended thickness of the bookshelf is at least 1–16 mm, length — 120 cm, width — 50 cm. These parameters are applicable if the books are arranged in one row. They must be distributed evenly over the surface: both the edges and the center must be occupied.

It happens that there is a need to arrange literature in 2-3 rows. In this case, the minimum thickness of the shelf should be 2.5 cm, and the length should be up to 1 m inclusive. The recommended depth is from 30 to 35 cm.

If you plan to store large-format albums, geographical atlases, and encyclopedic dictionaries in the closet, you should choose a model with wide shelves - 45–50 cm.
