If the presence of sideboards filled with crystal and Yugoslav walls can be understood, then the role played by carpets on the walls, many still do not understand this. So, in order to find an explanation for such traditions, we have prepared this article, where we will answer all your questions.
Carpet on the wall: USSR or a little history
If you think about the history of carpets, Persia probably comes to mind for many. Indeed, it was from there (and from other countries in the Middle East) that the tapestries came. Interestingly, this trend reached Europe at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, when carpets were synonymous with luxury. Even today, expensive models of this type of interior textiles indicate wealth and good taste.
Since carpets cost a fortune, they were treated with great respect. They were passed down from generation to generation, and in order to preserve the quality, they decided to hang this item on the wall. If anyone has had a luxury rug in their home before, it always makes a big impression.
Russia also plays an important role in popularizing wall hangings. During the Soviet era, they were hung not so much for decoration, but for better insulation of apartments and houses. The carpets against the wall insulated well from the cold, and in addition helped to soundproof the room. However, they were still available to wealthier people.
Features of using carpet in every room
The carpet can be laid under the bed so that the edges protrude from the ends of the piece of furniture. So the room will be decorated in oriental style. When decorating a living room, a vintage product should be divided into small pieces. The cut elements can be used as covers for sofas, armchairs and tables. It is also recommended to cut the carpet into squares and spread it on the floor.
Old carpets made from natural materials are suitable for a children's room. The product must be cut into pieces and placed near the crib and in the play area. The child will be able to play and not freeze from the cold. It is also recommended to make decorative elements from the carpet to decorate the interior. Pieces from the carpet are used to decorate stools, chairs and kitchen furniture.
Using the tips listed below, each person will be able to harmoniously fit a Soviet carpet into the interior of their home:
- Rugs add a cozy feel to any living room.
- Also, rugs will look cozy and give the bedroom a special warmth.
- You can lay a layer of old rug on a cold kitchen floor.
- You can also hang the carpet on the wall.
To properly use an old carpet, you need to apply several recommendations:
- Don't be afraid to combine shades, materials and different styles. This way you can create a wide variety of design trends.
- Old carpets should not be thrown away. They retain a special energy.
- Modern fashion is constantly changing and therefore you should not throw away Soviet carpets and furniture.
- To create an unusual interior, you need to use your imagination. If you wish, you can donate old items for restoration.
In addition to living rooms, the carpet can be laid in the bathroom. In the hallway, you should lay a silicone underlay under the carpet. This way your feet won't slip. Old carpet can absorb excess noise. Instead of underlayment, you can apply silicone sealant under the mat.
Carpet on the wall: the most important pros and cons
The wall rug was widespread in Russia, where it served as an important room decoration. This is why the wall rug is often called Russian style, increasingly representing an outdated design design.
A wall rug is definitely not suitable for rooms inspired by modern or minimalist style. After all, classic models still have a number of uses. If you are looking for tips and inspiration, scroll through the photos in this article.
A rug can be an elegant decoration for rooms defined by a rustic style. Some designs turn out to be quite elegant, and a colorful rug can dramatically enhance the character of a room.
It is also worth adding that classic carpets placed on the wall serve as additional insulation for the walls. As a result, they can improve the usability of poorly insulated homes.
Large monochrome photo
Even if you are not a professional photographer, black and white processing and large print format will turn your favorite photo into a work of art. And this color scheme will fit into any interior! Print out a landscape that you photographed on a trip, or a family photo that makes you smile, and let it stand out in your interior.
Decorative wall rug: a modern choice
A decorative wall hanging doesn't have to be associated with dubious elegance and a relic of a bygone era. Commercial offers also include very elegant and even luxurious models that will effectively decorate modern walls.
A wall carpet made of natural material is called kilim. This is a popular term for wool thread and double-sided embellishments. A colorful version on the wall is often associated with oriental motifs. This type of styling can be a wonderful way to overcome monotony in the arrangement of living spaces.
When choosing a decorative wall rug, you will be interested in Eastern Persian products. Natural rugs with geometric, intensely colored patterns are also becoming increasingly popular.
Modern carpets
There are a lot of modern carpets, but there are 3 main types: cotton, wool, leather.
Cotton
The first type of carpet is a cotton carpet. Carpets made from cotton come in different shapes and colors; they differ from all others in their softness and take a very long time to wear out. Cotton is a natural material that has high strength and durability.
It is designed in such a way that it gives an unusual combination of strength and absorbency.

Woolen
One of the features of such carpets is that they absorb moisture very well and almost do not conduct electricity. Dirt does not stick to the wool and thus the carpet remains clean for a long time. The fibers of these carpets are very soft, for example, if there was furniture on the carpet, then after you remove the furniture from the carpet, its fibers will be smooth and soft.
Leather
It is worth noting that these carpets are highly durable, but they are very easy to damage since leather is not the hardest material. These carpets are easy to clean and easy to maintain.
Carpet on the wall in the interior for different rooms
It turns out that the decorative wall carpet is not forgotten yet. True, the old models that were in use several decades ago are not in fashion. However, their place was taken by more elegant products with an oriental character.
Colored wall rugs are becoming increasingly popular. This type of decoration works well in a living room with a fireplace, in a studio and in a bedroom. The oriental pattern will emphasize the unusual nature of the composition.
A colorful wall rug can be a very good way to highlight a folk or oriental style. Some modern designs with bright colors will also look great in contemporary inspired spaces.
In a spacious living room, you can hang one rug on the wall or use several small ones to enhance the geometric effect. The choice of designs and models is very wide. This ensures that everyone can find a wall hanging that suits their decor style and room size.
You just have to remember that a fashionable, colorful carpet should be made from natural fabrics. Cheap synthetic products are not the best idea to enhance the elegance of your living room.
Carpeting for rooms with different purposes
Bedroom
One of the first solutions for carpeting for a bedroom that usually comes to mind is a light-colored product with long pile, which will not only create a warm and cozy atmosphere in the room for sleeping and relaxing, but will also perfectly muffle footsteps and create sufficient sound insulation.
A carpet in a light shade or with a diagonal pattern can visually expand the space of the bedroom. You can use either a large long-pile carpet for the entire room or small fluffy bedside rugs.
A chocolate-colored long-pile carpet covering the entire bedroom area not only provides warmth to your feet, but also creates a unique interior design. Among other things, in combination with light walls and ceilings, such floors visually expand the space in height.
As a rule, in bedrooms, carpets are placed in the sleeping area so that when getting out of bed anywhere, bare feet step on a warm and pleasant rug, and not on a bare, cold floor.
A carpet with a variegated pattern will look organic in a bedroom, the design of which used predominantly monochromatic types of finishing and decorative materials.
Conversely, plain carpeting is recommended for rooms with printed wall decoration. For example, if the pattern on the wallpaper is quite active and bright, then a light monochromatic carpet will be more than appropriate.
The bedroom is a room that needs increased sound insulation and the creation of a special warm atmosphere for a restful sleep and a comfortable awakening; this is the place where we gain strength, relax and start a new, vigorous day. Therefore, you can often find a combination of two types of carpeting in bedroom interiors. For example, a carpet that occupies the entire area of the room is combined with small fluffy rugs placed near the bed or dressing table.
For those who are not interested in pastel colors in the decoration of the bedroom, who even need dynamism in the room for sleeping and relaxing in order to feel the tone when waking up every morning, you can try using a contrasting carpet design. Black and white combinations, which have found a response in other interior items, look contrasting, bright and original for a bedroom.
Children's room
A bright carpet with a geometric pattern or images of fairy-tale or cartoon characters is perfect for a child's room. It is important that the pile of the covering is short - the nursery has to be cleaned more often, and long pile is more difficult to deal with. Among other things, short pile makes the carpet more resistant to abrasion.
When choosing a carpet for a children's room, it is important to take into account not only the performance properties and aesthetic side of the issue, but also make sure that the product was dyed with safe dyes - ask for a certificate of quality from sales consultants.
A carpet with bright squares of different colors and textures not only looks playful and optimistic in a children's room, but also creates an additional basis for inventing games.
Another interesting rug design for a nursery is a canvas with painted hopscotch. Warm and comfortable covering with an additional opportunity for organizing games.
Living room
For the living room, there are practically no restrictions in choosing a carpet - the main thing is that, in terms of style, color and texture, the carpet is combined with the rest of the design of the room. For some homeowners, it is important that the rug serves as a neutral background for the furniture located on it and fulfills its operational functions. Others, on the contrary, believe that carpet can become an accent in the interior, acting as a focal point.
For a living room, which, among other things, houses a kitchen and a dining room, a carpet can become a zoning element, outlining the conventional boundaries of a particular functional segment. It is logical that in the kitchen area the flooring is ceramic or stone tiles, and in the living room segment the floors are covered with a soft and warm carpet.
In the living room, made in calm, natural tones, a light carpet is integrated very successfully, creating the warm and cozy atmosphere necessary for a common room.
Dark carpets require more thorough and frequent cleaning, because even the smallest debris is visible on such a surface. But the increased cleaning is compensated by the beautiful appearance of the dark carpet, an interesting combination with other interior items, and the introduction of some brutality into the design, despite the feeling of warmth underfoot.
Hallways, corridors and spaces near stairs
For rooms with high traffic, it is recommended to purchase synthetic or semi-synthetic fabrics with short pile. Cleaning has to be done frequently, and low pile will be easier and faster to clean even with a regular vacuum cleaner with low power. As for colors, prints and patterns, everything is limited only by your preferences and your own ideas about aesthetics. But there are unspoken rules of combinatorics - if the room is made in light, neutral colors, then a bright carpet with an ornament or pattern will look advantageous and become the focal point of the interior.
If the interior of the functional space has enough color and texture accents, then it is better to opt for carpeting in neutral shades.
A carpet with a colorful pattern will fit more organically into the created interior if its colors have already been used in the design of the space, for example, in the upholstery of upholstered furniture or textile window decoration.
Interior style and carpet on the wall
The wall rug fits well into almost any interior. Of course, choosing the right model is the key to success. A little attention should be paid to such directions as glamor or Provencal, since here wall hangings are not always a good choice.
Scandinavian style - a rug on the wall subtly breaks up the cool color palette and pleasantly enlivens the decor. However, it is worth skillfully approaching colors so that they are not too bright, as this can disrupt the harmony of the interior.
Modern style - a wall rug with geometric patterns and expressive colors is perfect here. You may also want to consider a model that is contemporary art.
Loft style - large wall rugs love space, and this is always enough in industrial interiors. In addition, the fabric, pleasant to the touch, easily disrupts the severity of the decor. You can achieve both modern designs and classic decorations equally.
Classic style - You need to be careful not to pair them with too many trims and patterned fabrics.
Eclectic style - you could even say that someone invented it just to hang rugs on the walls. A creative mix in the interior is an excellent decoration for upholstery.
How to hang a carpet
Before hanging your rug you need to decide:
- Whether you want the rug to hang freely or sit against the wall will affect which method to use.
- When choosing a wall, also consider the size of your rug.
- Do not install a wall under the carpet that is exposed to direct sunlight.
- You need to leave a comfortable approach to the carpet so that you can clean it for several months with a vacuum cleaner.
We will tell you about 5 options to secure the carpet.
- Velcro . There is an opinion that this is the safest way to hang a rug without nails. You need to manually sew the Velcro onto the back of the rug. For larger rugs, about 2 inches wide. We recommend a 2-inch strip for larger, heavier rugs. It's best not to use sticky tape with Velcro as the marks will be difficult to remove.
- Cornice. At the back of the carpet you will have to sew a thick fabric into which the cornice itself will be inserted. And it is simply attached to the wall with self-tapping screws. The method is quite complicated, but suitable for hanging the heaviest and largest carpets.
- Clothespins for carpet . This is often used in museums and carpet stores. The only problem with clamps is that the weight of the blade can be unevenly distributed, which can cause warping over time.
- Carpet hooks on the wall . Ready-made wooden planks with protruding hooks are sold. They are usually used for laying carpet on the floor, but we will do it differently. They need to be drilled to the wall and the canvas hung. It is better to place it around the entire perimeter so that the corners of the carpet do not bend.
- Crossbar . Suitable only for interesting compositions with small rugs that can be hung en masse on the crossbar. The essence of this method, see the video:
How to hang a rug on a wall?
Wall rugs can be found in many interior design stores today. They are specially prepared for hanging, so they have loops sewn into them. Their size is similar to larger images, such as 200x200, 120x200 or 50x70 cm. A wall rug is usually a little lighter and thinner than the one you place on the floor.
Carpet from the wall: decoration worth attention
The wall rug should have a distinct decor. It performs the function of graphics, and therefore an accent that perfectly enlivens the interior, warms it, and gives comfort. Modern designs usually feature mosaics and colorful patterns, and sometimes also animal, floral or geometric motifs. The prices reflect how luxurious it is. Original, silk options are expensive. Of course, such huge amounts of money are paid for handicraft work.
Creating a handmade carpet takes from one to four years.
How to choose a carpet for your interior?
Rugs are a wonderful addition to any interior design. Let's consider the most popular interior styles and the most suitable types of carpets.
Classic interior styles
The classic interior style is distinguished by its versatility and severity of form. Classic interiors are chosen by people who are conservative, reserved and serious. The most popular directions of the classical style:
- Classicism - characterized by strict symmetry, harmony of colors and shades, expensive finishing materials and fabrics.
- Art Nouveau is characterized by asymmetry, softness and curvature of lines, and romanticism. Characteristic colors: all shades of wood, stone, there are elements of multi-colored glass.
- The Greek style is characterized by bed colors of the walls, ceiling, and floor. The furniture in the Greek style interior is made of carved wood and is simple and light. As an addition, accents in shades of blue, light blue and green can be placed. Decorative decorations of this style include all kinds of floor vases, sculptures and wall frescoes.
- Baroque is distinguished by the presence of columns, volume, luxury of elements and textures, a combination of expensive materials: gold, bronze, various types of wood, as well as the presence of paintings in the style of the era of the same name, mirrors, and antiques.
- Gothic is a pointed and elongated form, the presence of stained glass, decorative elements with an antique metal finish.
- Renaissance - characterized by an abundance of marble, expensive antique-style furniture, and a soft and harmonious combination of colors.
When choosing a carpet for your interior in one of the classic styles, preference should be given to expensive handmade Persian carpets. The color of the carpet should not attract too much attention - it should harmoniously complement the interior. However, in modern times, the role of a carpet can be played by the skins of various wild animals.
Ethnic interior styles
Ethnic style is determined by the presence of many elements characteristic of different cultures and nationalities. This design is chosen by people with a rich inner world and versatile personalities. Some of the most common types of ethno style are:
- The Egyptian style is distinguished by the trends of Ancient Egypt - symbolic ornaments, gold combined with black, all shades of sand and white, diluted with small accessories in blue and green.
- African style is a basis taken from modern style and complemented by motifs of African culture. The color palette of this style: various shades of wood, mainly dark brown, black leather, yellow, beige shades, a small presence of green, red, blue, sometimes blue, terracotta.
- Japanese style is also the addition of a modern base with specific national motifs. The Japanese style is characterized by a combination of white and black, the absence of chairs and armchairs, the presence of decorative elements with hieroglyphs, and splashes of red.
- Indian style is characterized by simplicity of forms, richness of all shades of red, brown and yellow.
For ethnic styles, plain carpets with medium or long pile are suitable; it is advisable to choose coarser textures. For the African style, the ideal solution for a carpet would be the skin of wild animals: zebra, lion, panther or tiger. The skin of a zebra can perfectly complement a bedroom, the skin of a lion or tiger - a living room. In Japanese style, decorative mats can replace carpets.
Modern interior styles
Appearing in the era of the development of modern technologies, modern style is distinguished by restraint, conciseness, severity of forms, a minimum of brightness and details. This style suits active and successful young people. Modern style is divided into types:
- High-tech - this style is characterized by plain walls, a lot of gloss, metal, glass and plastic.
- Art Deco is distinguished by an original combination of the incongruous: high-tech geometry, the softness of the classics, and the originality of the ethnic style - everything is intertwined in a surprisingly harmonious way.
- Pop art is distinguished by extravagance, extraordinary brightness of colors and textures, as well as amazing decorative elements.
- Minimalism is most suitable for large and spacious rooms, since its feature is the emphasis on the minimal presence of furniture and decorative elements.
For interiors made in modern styles, carpets made of synthetic fibers are most suitable. Plain carpets or carpets with modern designs are preferable. The color palette for carpets in a modern interior is unlimited.
Where to hang the rug?
Two rooms are ideal for this: the living room and the bedroom. Rugs hung above a sofa or bed will enliven the interior and create the impression of a homely family atmosphere. They will attract attention, but will not dominate the room.
Some people consider carpets on the walls a symbol of kitsch and not the best memory of the USSR. However, such thinking should be abandoned, especially since carpets in many forms are a fashionable solution, and wall options are successfully replacing graphics or wallpaper.
One big print
Remember the times when one large piece of art was enough to make an impression? It's never too late to revisit it: replace rows of small frames with one single painting or photo you're crazy about. It can give your room more depth, especially if the image has a 3D effect, and will accurately bring all the objects in the room together into a single composition.
