If certain (small!) areas do not absorb liquid, you can try ironing them through a damp cloth with a hot iron - this will enhance the effect.
You shouldn’t overdo it either - if you flood the wall with water, it can soften the plaster and putty, and the surface will then have to take a long time to level and clean.
