Types of egg chairs, location options, mounting methods

Egg chair - design features

The egg chair relatively quickly conquered the market Olympus. This model is just over 50 years old. At the same time, the popularity of such chairs is off the charts. The idea of creation was born almost by accident. An ordinary Dane, Arne Jacobsen, dreamed of becoming an artist since childhood. Life decreed otherwise and he had to master a profession related to architecture. But they say you can’t hide talent. True, it manifested itself not in drawing, but in furniture design. He is called the founder of Danish design. Perhaps his two models of chairs – the swan and the egg – received the loudest worldwide fame.

The foreign name for this model is Egg Chair. The following characteristic features can be distinguished:

  • Easy to assemble. A minimum of action is required from you. The process takes no more than 5 minutes;
  • Comfort. The shape of the chair allows you to completely relax. This contributes to quality rest;
  • Possibility to replace upholstery. The process is quite simple. If you have minimal sewing skills, this is easy to do yourself;
  • The original appearance will fit well into the interior with any modern design style;
  • The chair is suitable for use by children. There are no sharp corners in the design. So it’s simply impossible to get hurt;
  • All models can rotate around their own axis. Additionally, they are capable of swaying with a deflection angle of about 30°.

Chairs with floor support

The main versions of the egg chair are made exclusively with support on the floor. The chair itself can rotate in different directions, and the support can either be firmly attached to the floor, or it can be made so massive that the chair does not turn over during rotation if the “load” is unevenly distributed. However, the chair is fundamentally designed in such a way that it is simply impossible to “distribute” it unevenly. It is comfortable in all respects, and once you sit down in it, you don’t have to look for the most comfortable position – the chair will find it for its client’s body on its own.

The main advantage of such a chair is its unique shape, which takes into account the smallest details of human anatomy. It’s simply impossible not to feel comfortable in it! An unsurpassed level of comfort, combined with an unusual, eye-catching design, makes the egg-shaped chair an excellent solution for both the office, reception area and living space.

Types of models

Hanging

Other designers were also inspired by the idea. The egg shape was adopted by numerous designs of chairs that appeared later. One of them can be called hanging chairs “cocoons”. They are made in the form of an openwork wicker body with egg or drop shapes.

There are several types of fastening:

  • Ceiling. First of all, you will need an opinion from architects that the ceiling can withstand the expected loads. If everything is in order and you have been given the green light, then a hole is drilled in the ceiling corresponding to the suspension element. If you find yourself in a hollow area of the slab, then the entire cavity must be filled with foam sealant, into which the fasteners are inserted. The chair is suspended only after the cementitious filler has completely dried. For this, a strong chain or special ropes with counterweights are used;
  • Beam. Everything is much simpler here. It is enough to fix the rope around the beam. A chair is attached to it. You will have to install guy ropes to the floor;
  • Tripod. In this case, the body clings to a special curved stand with a ring-shaped base. The suspension also consists of a loop, hook and chain. Often the chain is replaced with a dense spring. This chair performs the functions of a swing and a rocking chair at the same time.

Floor-standing

When choosing a floor-standing egg chair, priority attention should be paid to the base. The stability of the entire structure depends on it. There are the following types:

  • Cross. The classic version has four points. This tradition continues to be preserved today. It is made from chrome-plated steel or carbon varieties. This base is not equipped with rollers. The end of each knitting needle is decorated with an anti-slip flat lining. There is a low leg between the crosspiece and the body of the chair;
  • Stand. Round wide base with a low single leg. Popular with more modern egg-shaped chair models. It completely follows the contours of the egg. The inside is concave and hollow. The resulting niche houses a soft seat. This chair allows an adult to sit completely inside, bending his legs. A very stable option with a high level of comfort. Another original solution for an interior with a modern focus.

Varieties

The most common type is the hanging egg swing. There are also models that are placed on the floor. Accordingly, these designs differ not only in appearance, but also in the type of fastening.

In addition, furniture can be divided into two types depending on the material of manufacture. The first type includes a wicker egg chair, rattan and glass models. Such options are usually suspended from the ceiling, and can also hang on a rod. They are often complemented by fur capes or pillows. Due to this, the furniture becomes even more comfortable.

A variety of bean bags from IKEA, popular colors and shapes

For offices and apartments, soft chairs are usually purchased. Most often they are structures rotating on a stand. A wide variety of upholstery can be used for them. In addition, there are options with a closed (resembling half an egg) and open top. Models of the first type look very shocking, slightly cover the person sitting in the chair and allow you to create an atmosphere of complete privacy. The second option is considered optimal for living rooms and offices.

Let's see what types of housing there are:

  • One-piece fiberglass mold. Standard option. It is made of special plastic, the structure of which is reinforced with fiberglass. Very durable. The absence of joints and seams makes the structure extremely durable. Withstands weight up to 130 kg. The inside is invariably covered with a continuous layer of porous foam filler;
  • Metal carcass. This option can be attributed to the favorite option of “folk craftsmen”. The thin metal tube completely repeats the famous silhouette. Additional bent stiffening ribs are also attached along the back. Additionally, flat overlays are used to maintain a rounded shape. The entire structure is carefully packaged in a case made of 6 - 8 layers of fiberglass. Epoxy resin is used for bonding. Then the filler and covering are applied. For those who are not deprived of modeling talents, this method allows you to save on the considerable price tag for such a chair (about 40,000 rubles).

Pros and cons of cocoon swings for the garden

A cocoon swing is a type of hanging chair. They have all the advantages of this design plus a high wall and back.

The main advantages are as follows:

  • street swing egg is an excellent solution for organizing children's leisure time - children will never get bored of swinging on a swing, one at a time or together, this is relevant for both children and adult schoolchildren;
  • a big plus of this type of swing is safety, the cocoon body covers about 75% of the space, that is, the child here is surrounded on 3 sides by high walls, the risk of falling and injury even to a one-year-old baby is minimal;
  • cocoon - the model is lightweight, has a top fastening, the chair can be attached to a hook on the ceiling, tied to a beam, fixed on a tree or on any horizontal support, you can even use a special stand for a hanging chair and install a swing even in the center of the room;
  • they use different materials for production, sometimes very beautiful and interesting; a hand-made cocoon can have a very unusual design and become a decoration for the garden;
  • models can have different sizes - for 1, 2 or even 3 children or adults, with slightly different configurations.

Hanging cocoon swings have some disadvantages:

  • difficulties with movement - this applies to cases when the cocoon swing is attached to the ceiling or hook - they leave defects;
  • the model with its support stand can be installed anywhere, but it takes up quite a lot of space, so such a swing can only be installed in a spacious room.

Most often, the cocoon swing is fixed to the ceiling. This type of fastening is stationary and can be done using anchors or strong bolts.

Upholstery materials

You can choose any suitable option for upholstery:

  • Natural wool. In the classic version it is certainly used. The material is durable, dense, but can cause allergic reactions;
  • Microvelvet. Wonderful velvety fabric with double-sided pile. It can be smooth, ribbed (like corduroy) or textured (part of the pile is thermally pressed in the form of a pattern). Long service life with minimal maintenance requirements have made microcorduroy a popular material for upholstery;
  • Genuine Leather. Since this chair is a designer one, you can find exotic options such as pony leather, zebra leather and the like. But the principle remains the same. Softness depends on the quality of the workmanship and the thickness of the leather. The material is absolutely not susceptible to contamination, repels water, and is easy to care for. Looks very solid;
  • Eco leather. A more budget option, but at the same time the properties remain close to real leather. This soft material is very durable, tear-resistant, and does not fade. Pleasant and warm when touched. Poor air permeability;
  • Velours. Used frequently. For its manufacture, wool or cotton is used as the basis. The pile is synthetic. Pleasant to the touch, very soft, delicate. At the same time, it does not require maintenance and is easy to clean. High level of decorativeness. Subject to abrasion, not resistant to mechanical damage. Not suitable for a family with children and cats;
  • Chenille. Excellent textured fabric, reminiscent of a handmade rug. Some fibers are cotton, some are synthetic. They are pre-twisted into fairly large threads that are intertwined like braiding. The synthetic thread is made fluffy. Dense material with a pleasant texture.
  • Scotchgard. The closest relative of jacquard, possessing all its advantages. In addition, the fabric is impregnated with a special composition. As a result, it gains properties to repel water, dirt, dust and resist mechanical stress (anti-claw function). But such fabric cannot be washed. Just rinse lightly in lukewarm water without wringing.

Location and mounting options

An egg swing will be appropriate in almost any room. As a rule, they are placed on the terrace, in children's rooms, bedroom or living room. Hanging models can be mounted in the following ways:

  1. Ceiling. This fixation option is suitable only for those rooms with very strong ceilings. Before purchasing furniture, you should make sure that the ceiling can support not only the product itself, but also the person who will sit in it. Installation is carried out using a chemical anchor.
  2. On the beam. As a rule, it is installed in private homes. Instead of a beam, you can use a branch. The main thing is that it is as strong and thick as possible, otherwise the structure may soon collapse.
  3. On a tripod. The design consists of a frame standing on the floor, on which the egg itself is suspended using a chain. These models differ from the previous ones in their mobility. If desired, they can be rearranged from one room to another or taken outside.

Chairs equipped with a tripod support can be moved from one place to another. The main thing is that a flat surface is chosen for installing the furniture.

There are only two ways to attach floor models. The classic option is installation on a cross. This method is still popular today. The base is made of chrome-plated steel, its edges are equipped with linings that prevent slipping. In this case, rollers are not provided. The second fixation option is on a round stand. It can taper at the base of the body, and is also often made in the form of a flat disk. As a rule, the bottom is made in the same color scheme as the chair. As a result, the furniture visually looks monolithic.

A special type of chair is a rocking chair. It weighs about 25 kg and is small in size. The steel leg-base of the furniture is equipped with a swing mechanism; the product itself can be placed in any room. The egg chair can be attached not only from above, but also from below.

What to look for when purchasing

Each chair has its own weight limit that it can support. Most models will withstand up to 120 kilograms of load, but it is better to make sure of its real strength in advance. It is also worth choosing the material based on the climatic conditions of the room. Not all materials can withstand high humidity or dry air; not all chairs like constant exposure to sunlight or a location close to a window. It is better to discuss such nuances with the seller before purchasing. It would be a shame if a chair purchased for a lot of money does not last long. And the price of such chairs is really quite high!

In general, we can say that an egg-shaped chair of any type, style and design will definitely attract attention. However, the owner should coordinate it with the interior, because a chair located in an inappropriate environment can cause not delight, but a completely opposite effect. But if the egg chair is installed in harmony with the decor, guests who have sat on this chair once will try to visit more often.

What is a hanging chair

The hanging chair first appeared in the 1950s in Denmark. It was created by the famous Danish designer Nanna Dietzel, when she hung an “egg” with a hole for sitting in her apartment. These unusual swings became the prototype of modern chair models. This thing was unlike all the usual things: it hung and swayed, could spin around its axis and almost hid the person who sat in it from prying eyes. The artist’s guests liked the new piece of furniture, and in 1968 designer Eero Aarnio created a commercial version of the egg made of plastic.

  • Symptoms of poisoning

Dimensions of cocoon swings

Product dimensions vary quite widely.

  1. The standard dimensions of the cocoon are as follows: bowl height 1200 mm, depth 950 mm, and width 750 mm. This model is considered “adult”.
  2. For children, the dimensions may be smaller: the height of the bowl is up to 1000 mm, and the width is no more than 60 mm.
  3. The cocoon for several people is increased in width, but the height of the bowl remains almost unchanged - it is a maximum of 1500 mm. The width is calculated at the rate of 40–60 cm per person.

Important! The dimensions of the cocoon swing are selected based on the intended place of use. It hardly makes sense to install a 3-seater model in a living room.

Egg chair - history of origin

The banality of some solutions often proves the genius of their creators. These are famous designers and developers who have the courage to recognize the uniqueness of the commonplace. Of course, for this you need to have a keen eye and an open heart to draw inspiration from everyday things, frivolous and trivial. And sometimes it takes a genius to discover an obvious fact. After all, it is believed, not without reason, that one of mankind's greatest inventions is the wheel.

Now we will talk about the egg. An ordinary egg. Egg shell. Could this be the beginning of great art? Maybe. Arne Jacobsen proved this. Inspired by the shape of an ordinary egg, he created a unique egg chair or egg chair.

Who is Arne Jacobsen?

He is considered the father of modern Danish design.
In his youth he wanted to become an artist. However, he had to choose a more practical profession: an architect. To achieve this goal, Jacobsen worked as a mason and was later admitted to the Faculty of Architecture of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. The man who trained as a mason finally began his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Already during his studies, he was known as a talented designer, who won a silver medal at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in 1925 in Paris for his chair design. Photo. Chair “Swan”, 1958. Photo. Chair "Ant", 1952.

After graduation, Arne worked as an architect and after some time opened his own design studio. Early in his career he won the Danish Association of Architects' competition for the home of the future. During World War II he fled to Sweden. At that time he was developing fabrics and wallpapers.

Jacobsen's best projects created in the fifties are “Egg”, “Ant” and the “Swan” chair.

The egg chair's origins date back to 1958, when 56-year-old Copenhagen-based architect and interior designer Arne Jacobsen was commissioned to design the lobby for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen.

The proposal was simple - everything had to remain concise, modernist and functional. A chair was created inspired by the shape of an egg. The spherical shape of the seat provides the person sitting in it with a feeling of security and peace, creating the feeling of a “protective layer of shell”. This idea has become popular for many designers in the world.

How to choose a chair?

Before purchasing an egg chair, you need to familiarize yourself with the recommendations offered by professional designers.

  • Furniture should not only be beautiful, but also comfortable, so you need to test a potential option in the store.
  • The hanging structure must be placed in such a way that it does not interfere with movement around the room. It is especially necessary to take into account the height of the room and the maximum height of the occupants.
  • You need to pay attention to whether the Egg chair is original. Although a replica costs less, which, at first glance, will help you save money, it also lasts much less.
  • If the room is compact and does not stand out in size, then you can purchase a small hanging chair. Models with stands will clutter up the space.
  • A plastic chair is suitable for the kitchen. It is easy to clean from dirt and is also most protected from damage.
  • The hanging chair should be wicker if it is installed in a room with a country style, and if it is fusion, then it is better to give preference to a plastic model.
