Compact shoe storage: ideas for a closet, dressing room, hallway

Some practical ideas for saving space

There is always not enough storage space and this postulate absolutely does not depend on the size of your home and the number of cabinets and shelves. But, there are probably secluded corners, nooks and niches in your space that can be equipped with small systems for storing shoes and accessories.

These are the inclined shelves you can install yourself. They do not take up much space and can be placed even in a narrow corridor. Of course, they are not able to accommodate all the family’s seasonal shoes, but the pairs that you use every day will fit easily.

Very often, in houses with two or more floors, the space under the stairs is empty, but it could be used to place storage systems there. These can be either pull-out shelves or built-in small racks. The asymmetrical space dictates the shape of the shelves, but even a small closet is an opportunity to place things and shoes.

The space under the steps can be converted into drawers for shoes. To do this, it is better to contact specialists; such work requires precision for comfortable movement of the boxes. And don’t forget about the special “handles” that your drawers will be equipped with. It is convenient to store shoes in such storage systems until the next season.

If you can’t organize shelves under the stairs, perhaps there is a place to do it nearby. Small niches can accommodate the shoes you need for daily wear.

Often attic spaces, famous for their asymmetry and sloping ceilings, cannot accommodate full-fledged storage systems. It would be logical to place shoe shelves or a low display rack in the lowest place with the greatest slope of the ceiling.

Boxes

Seasonal shoes are most often stored in boxes on the lower section of wardrobes and dressing rooms. Store-bought cardboard packaging remains after purchasing another pair of shoes or sneakers. It’s better not to throw them away, but to put your favorite boots or shoes there until winter. Boxes are stacked in rows on spacious shelves under the cabinet wall. It is recommended to label the packages to make the shoes easier to find. You can also cut out identical windows through which the contents can be easily seen. Another interesting option is photographs of the filling of the boxes, pasted on the ends of the packages.

A box storage system is suitable if you have free space and large closets. If space is limited, clear plastic boxes are used. One container is enough to accommodate 8–10 pairs. Using homemade cardboard dividers, you can organize the contents so that boots or shoes do not damage each other.

Lighting in the dressing room

According to the rules, the dressing room must be illuminated by at least one window. This saves energy and allows you to find things without the light on.

Lighting planning begins with dividing the wardrobe into zones.

The first zone includes a section 150 cm high with outerwear, the second contains short clothes and is 100 cm high, the third zone is for shoes. Where there will be a fitting room, a full-length mirror is needed.

Places with mirrors require separate lamps around them. After all, the fitting place is the most important, where a person looks at himself and evaluates his appearance.

The main task is to choose lighting that will be bright, but not cause eye strain.

Using different light sources in the dressing room

If the room has suspended ceilings, it is recommended to use built-in devices with a wide dispersion angle. For ordinary ceilings, chandeliers and ordinary lamps are used. The most convenient are rotating lamps that you can direct yourself.

Rules for choosing lighting:

  1. You should choose economical lamps.
  2. The lighting is as natural as possible.
  3. There is no need to choose lamps that are too bright.
  4. Lighting should be planned before installing cabinets and shelving.
  5. If the wardrobe is small, you should not illuminate the mirror.

It is logical to arrange all seasonal shoes in the dressing room on convenient racks or open shelves

We choose based on our circumstances

As you can see, there are plenty of ways to store shoes, the main thing is to choose the one that will ideally suit your circumstances.

There are actually many ways to organize a shoe storage space that suits you. Therefore, before purchasing or making, answer yourself simple questions:

  • How many shoes do you plan to store? Just count the number of pairs that will be in your shoe rack at the same time.
  • How much free space do you need for this? In other words, will all the shoes be in one place, or will you place them in different cabinets and cabinets? Or perhaps you can highlight a separate wall in the dressing room.
  • How much space do your shoes require? Here we are talking about models: what is more in your “repertoire”: cowboy boots or ballet shoes and flat clogs. After all, in the end, the answer to the question of how much space will need to be allocated to “house” your shoes will depend on this.

When organizing storage space, of course, you should immediately consider how many shoes you need to place. Regardless of how many pairs of shoes there are in your family, if you wish, you can always find decent options for storing them. Well, whether it’s the usual way or a creative idea is up to you to decide.

Ideas for small hallways

Finding ways to place shoes in small hallways is more difficult. Much depends on the preferences of the owners.

It is really difficult to place a large number of shoes in a small hallway.

  • Fans of minimalism will love the open metal shelving, which will perfectly accommodate shoes for the current season. If you don’t have a lot of shoes, then you can generally get by with plastic or metal trays (such as trays). Such a tray, painted in a suitable color, will become not just a functional part, but also some kind of spectacular addition to the overall design concept.
  • Connoisseurs of the Scandinavian style and the loft style prefer to use available materials. For example, construction pallets, pre-painted white, will perfectly complement the interior. Believe me, your guests will not even guess about the true origin of stylish and convenient places to store shoes.
Well, if the structure is supplemented with flower pots or decorative figurines, then the storage space, as they say, “with a slight movement of the hand” turns into a work of art.

By the way, the loft style will “get along” perfectly with unpainted wooden pallets. The main thing is to process them so that they are safe to use and there is no risk of planting a splinter.

  • A very modest-sized hallway would be appropriately complemented by a horn shoe rack. In this model, shoes are placed vertically, the shelves are narrow and do not require much space. In such a situation, shoes can even be placed on cabinet doors by equipping special pockets and rails.
  • Another way to rationally use space is a bench (pouf) for the hallway with a built-in shoe cabinet. Such a bench can be made of different materials: wood, chipboard or metal.
  • For shoes, you can use the lower shelves in the hallway furniture. And you choose the design and decoration of these places at your discretion: either ordinary shelves, or hangers with special hooks for boots, for example.

If for you shoes are not just a necessary element of everyday clothing, but a hobby, a hobby on which you don’t mind spending either time or money, then the storage areas can be equipped accordingly. For example, multi-tiered open shelving or cabinets with transparent doors.

Shoe cabinets with transparent doors are quite convenient for storage and fit well into most interiors. If shoes are expensive, then it is preferable to organize a separate place for each pair. Indeed, in this case we are talking not only about placement and storage, but also about the aesthetic pleasure of seeing your collection.

If each pair of shoes has its own separate storage space, then contemplating such a collection is much more pleasant. As an example: if you consider yourself a horse riding enthusiast, then in the hallway you can organize special shelves on which several pairs of cowboy boots will be effectively placed. And if you complement the “composition” with other elements - hats, leather belts - you will get a very impressive interior that will delight all your acquaintances and friends!

With the help of accessories, shoe storage can be made very stylish and impressive. For those who love creativity, a couple of unusual ideas for storing shoes.

  1. Cornices instead of shelves. At a hardware store you need to purchase ready-made cornices and “cut” them into pieces of approximately 30-50 cm (it all depends on the available space and your personal preferences). This storage method is ideal for high-heeled shoes - just hook the heel onto the ledge. It looks impressive and is very convenient to use.
  2. Boxes for children. This moment can simply be turned into a game. Designate a couple of bottom shelves in your closet or shelving unit for children's sandals. And instead of putting shoes and sandals in boring and monotonous boxes, put several pairs of shoes in bright buckets. If necessary, each of them can be signed, or something interesting and positive can be drawn on them.

Wicker baskets

Boxes and plastic containers are suitable for storing shoes in a modern interior. And wicker square baskets will fit perfectly into a classic interior in Provence or country style. You can make any combination of them or hang them at different levels - in the manner of a traditional shoe rack.
