You probably already have an idea of how and where you should arrange the furniture in the room so that it looks beautiful and harmonious. All that’s left to do is bring the idea to life. First, visualize how you see your room. Draw a schematic plan of your dream living room with all future furniture and appliances. Why is this necessary? In order to protect yourself from unpleasant surprises that may await you if the furniture is arranged incorrectly. For example, it may turn out that the sofa will be in a draft. Without a diagram, this nuance may initially go unnoticed, but on the plan you will immediately notice it. Thus, by looking at the arrangement from the outside, you can choose the optimal place for the sofa, which is guaranteed to save you from future possible torment due to a constant cold.
The location of the sofa in the living room
. Take a look at our options for placing this item in the room. You will notice that choosing a suitable location for the sofa directly depends on the goal.
1. Sofa opposite the TV. Perfectly suited for family evening gatherings.

Interesting design solutions
The choice of design - both style, color, and specific techniques - depends on the shape of the room. Then it will be easier to place individual sections than in a square volume. But you can use interesting solutions from leading designers in different apartments.
Square rooms
The best option for an area of 16 square meters. m. is to transform the living room into a rectangular room, while the bedroom will take up a certain part necessary to install a bed. A partition is placed at the feet of the bed, which will determine the boundaries of the zones, hide the place to rest from view, and transform the living room.
Real solutions that transform the bedroom and living room of 16 square meters. m are plasterboard partitions, inside of which you can install several open shelves on both sides, racks with partially open sections, openwork partitions made of wood and metal. They can be made to the full height of the room, but then the bedroom will actually be separated, and the living room will remain too small. That is why a low partition will be more harmonious to visually increase or at least preserve the existing space.
Rectangular rooms
Here the sleeping area can be used as window decoration. To do this, solid cabinets are installed around the frame, and a bed is placed below. This way the bed is visually separated from the rest of the room. There are storage spaces at the feet and at the head of it, which will not be visible from the main sofa in the living room. At the same time, under the bed you can organize several more drawers for different things. Everything together looks like an open closet containing a bed.
Removing stationary partitions will make the room larger. An interesting option would be to install cornices along the ceiling along the contour of the sleeping bed. Light curtains will make such a bedroom comfortable at night, and during the day they can be simply gathered to expand the space. In this case, you can paint the wall of such an area in the color of the bedspread, and the area will be almost invisible.
Curtains can also follow the contour of the window, then at any time of the day or night you can literally separate and make absolutely invisible the bedroom located directly under the window sill.
Hidden beds
Another interesting solution is hidden beds. They can be built into furniture and lowered as needed, as well as pulled out from under a specially equipped podium. This is an ideal option for a room where many guests are received, but there is simply no room for a bedroom. Here it no longer matters what kind of wallpaper for the walls will be in the recreation area; the main thing is to choose practical materials for finishing the floor, on which the wheels of the retractable bed will move without damage.
It should be noted that organizing a living room and bedroom of 16 square meters. m. it will be easier if the room has two windows, otherwise one of the zones will be deprived of natural light. You can compensate for its deficiency by adding several lamps. But a single window is not an obstacle to creating a cozy and harmonious room with different functional areas.

. If you don’t want the door to draw unnecessary attention to itself, then this invisible model without platbands will look great in your future ideal living room. If you paint the “invisible” wall the same color as the walls, it will become completely invisible.
Open inward or outward? The decision is yours. The main thing is that the door did not interfere with free passage and did not limit access to the dressing room or cabinets. Depending on the layout, in some cases it makes sense to either move the doorway, or focus on a sliding compartment door or a folding book door.
1. Acceptable option. The door leaf does not block the corridor and does not interfere with the passage into the room. However, there is also a minus - when opening the door will touch the cabinet doors.
2. Not the best option. Here the door blocks the entrance and visually reduces the space. If possible, change the direction of the door. If not, then it makes sense to install a folding door-book or accordion.
3. Bad option. It is very inconvenient to open the door to the living room if your apartment has a narrow corridor. In addition, in order to open it, you have to step back every time. Uncomfortable, right? Here it would be more logical to install a folding or sliding door.
4. An excellent location option, which is also good from a fire safety point of view. The door leaf does not interfere with the approach to the room and does not touch the furniture.
Sliding partitions
Partitions are one of the current ways to divide space. Thanks to partitions in the form of a rack or screen, the owner receives a lot of advantages:
- the room is clearly divided into zones;
- it is possible to vary the lighting;
- even if company is received in the living room area, you can hide and relax behind a partition;
- if necessary, the sliding partition can be tightly closed or opened;
- design modules do not take up much space when opening.
By giving preference to shelving systems, which can also be mobile, the owner receives additional storage space.

What do you like best? It is important to pay special attention to the television zone. In order not to spoil the design of the room with protruding wires, you should foresee in advance where to hide them. It would also be nice to hide the numerous outlets for the set-top box, modem, sound bar and receiver. A cable channel will cope with this task, which will make your television area neat and harmonious.
Height from floor
. To watch your favorite programs and movies with maximum comfort, place the TV at eye level of a sitting person - 1 m from the floor to the middle of the screen.
Diagonal size
. Consider options from 50 inches (if you have the financial means, of course); TVs with a small diagonal can create the appearance of a lonely, inappropriate spot on an empty wall.
Film projector as an alternative
. For a projector you will almost certainly need a screen. Think about which one to give preference: manual or electric? If you prefer the second option, provide power for it in advance and do not forget about the cable channel for the wires. The choice of location for the film projector itself is also extremely important. Decide whether it will be a permanent mount or a removable one. Well, to fully enjoy the bright and rich picture when viewing, you will need blackout curtains to darken the room as much as possible.

Venetian putty is well suited for covering bedroom walls. With it, the room will look refined, delicate, and conducive to relaxation. The second option is photo wallpaper, 3D wallpaper. The drawing should not be dark or very large, preferably light colors, natural themes.
Dark colors will visually reduce the space of the bedroom.
You can add some bright colors to the bedroom interior so that the room does not look boring.
Before you finally approve the final room design project, you need to calculate the “useful” ceiling height as competently as possible. The higher, the more interesting and unusual the room can be decorated. If the height is no more than 2.5 meters, the surface is simply glued or painted. In such cases, liquid wallpaper is very relevant.
It is better to abandon bulky decorative items.
If the height is more than 2.5 meters, you can safely install tension structures. The surfaces will be perfectly smooth, but several valuable centimeters will be lost.
You need to choose decor that will create a feeling of lightness.
With a ceiling height of more than 2.8, you can hang multi-level plasterboard structures. In such cases, an individual project is created.
Photos of the whole family in small frames, small paintings of neutral content (landscapes) or drawings made by children are always appropriate in the bedroom.
The flooring can be laminate, high-quality linoleum, or carpet. If the decoration of walls, ceilings, and decorative elements are in pastel colors, the floor is recommended to be decorated in dark colors, or to match the walls.
It is necessary to take into account the compatibility of all decorative elements in the interior and finishing elements.
If you want brightness, you can hang a catchy panel, a blanket or several small pillows on the wall.
If the decor placed around the perimeter creates disharmony, it is best to replace it or completely abandon this idea.
Doors are preferably sliding or hinged, opening towards the next room. The presence of a loggia is now rarely necessary for anyone; most owners attach it to the room, gaining additional meters.

In many ways, style is responsible for comfort and aesthetics: a correctly selected composition in the character and mood that satisfies your life values and needs. The choice for a small room remains quite traditional, although not as large as for a spacious room in your own cottage:
- The most popular and sought-after solution remains functionalism, which today is often combined with such trends as hi-tech and minimalism. It is obvious that the interior of the room will subordinate the functions, even the shape and color. There will be no unnecessary details here, which will free up space and make even a modest room comfortable. A convenient option remains the use of transformable structures - cabinets, racks and partitions, niches with TVs and decor, coffee tables, bars, etc.
- Living room 16 sq. m. in a modern style can also be implemented in the contemporary direction. This is a combination of classic correct geometry with simple lines, intuitive interior and industrial functionality. In such a room, overly bright colors and bulky accents are rarely used, although they are useful in small details. Here, most often, the furniture facades merge with the walls, the decoration contains natural materials and, accordingly, shades - wood, ceramics, plaster, metal.
- Classicism is not the most popular solution for a small living room, but it is the most noble and luxurious. The combination of white and gilding is quite acceptable for such a room. 2. A large work desk by the window is an excellent option for those working at home. This table with an extended window sill is perfect for working with a desktop computer. In addition, if your living room has a narrow and elongated trailer shape, such a tabletop will visually expand the room.
3. Desk built into the closet. An ideal option for creative individuals. With such a table, no one will see your “artistic mess”, because it can easily be hidden from prying eyes back into the closet.

Combining a bedroom and living room in an apartment in one space has many advantages:
- all necessary items are at arm's length;

If there is a balcony, it is worth considering the option of insulating the open space to combine with the apartment. The investment pays off quickly due to a significant increase in usable space. Choosing a zoning method is the main task in small apartments. Decorators offer many options for visual and real division of the room with solid partitions and lightweight structures:
Air conditioner

The main rule: flows of cooled air should not blow towards the sofa or table, otherwise the person in the room has every chance of catching a cold.
Moreover, the farther the internal housing of the air conditioner is located from the window, the more difficult and expensive it is to install - after all, you will have to trench the wall.

- not the most attractive detail in the interior. In order for it not to be too conspicuous and not to violate the integrity and harmony of the design, we hid the white block on the white wall.
Let's look at the three most common air conditioner location options:
1. An excellent place to locate the indoor unit would be above the door.
2. Air conditioner near the window. Good and economical location option.
3. But we strongly do not recommend this arrangement of the indoor unit. Cold air from the air conditioner blows onto the sofa and the people sitting there. Take care of your health and the health of your loved ones - choose a different location.
Lighting and decor
A number of details allow you to complete the composition in any interior style, so both lighting and decor play a significant role regardless of which design direction you choose. It is the accessories that will make the environment comfortable, harmonious and cozy.
Ideas for a living room of 16 square meters. m. demonstrate in the photo the simplicity and functionality of the solutions:
- If the room has a lot of sunlight, a basic chandelier is sufficient, although additional sconces or floor lamps are indispensable, because someday you will want to create a more intimate environment for relaxation or family movie watching in the evening.
- A room will be visually spacious if a lot of spotlights and built-in lamps are used along the contour - to illuminate the ceiling, individual pieces of furniture, cabinets and functional areas.
- For effective lighting, it is better to choose a spectrum that is comfortable for you, but at the same time choose different bulbs for different light sources - brighter and cooler for the overall system, warmer and dimmer for sconces and floor lamps.
The lamps themselves often serve as decor in both spacious and small rooms, especially when decorated in a modern style. For example, in loft design it can be wooden or even concrete, in the high-tech direction - metal lamps.
Other decor includes vases, paintings, photographs, textiles and curtains. As a rule, the smaller the room, the fewer decorative elements it uses. At the same time, first of all, useless items are rejected - figurines, volumetric overlays, curtains. In minimalist interiors, only blinds or roller shutters, original lamps, and a few photos remain. In classicism, single paintings, heavy noble textiles, and a pair of large floor vases can be used.

Make sockets with a reserve and think about their location in advance. Calculate approximately how many outlets you will need in the room. Decide where the floor lamp will be, and where the table lamp will be, and how many there will be. And don't forget about the TV zone! There will be a lot of sockets there - it’s better to hide them behind the cabinet or behind the TV itself. The same applies to the electric fireplace. By the way, you can provide a place for the New Year tree and garlands in advance. On average, you will need about 15 outlets in your living room.
Bedroom 16 sq.m.: the beginning of the beginning, or on the way with the mood
When creating a 16-square bedroom design, remember your own desires, feelings and capabilities. The bedroom is a place of complete relaxation, privacy for two, so everything here should be good, easy, simple and relaxing. And, of course, the territory should be liked by two people. Therefore, when creating an interior in such a room, pay attention to the following important points:
- color design of the bedroom. 16 square meters is not a lot, so make the room more spacious, brighter, more comfortable with the help of finishing materials in light colors. Give preference to a stripe in the design: a horizontal stripe 5 cm thick will visually expand the space, a vertical stripe will divide the room into zones and increase the ceiling;
- daylight. Here we pay attention only to personal preferences: if you want to create a secluded corner, use blinds to create a minimum light flux, as well as tulle, curtains and curtains. . To create harmony with the brick wall in this interior, we used minimalist lamps - all from different collections, but in the same loft style.

are an integral part of the decor, so they must be combined with the overall style of the room. Nowadays it is important to use a variety of lighting fixtures in the same style from different collections in one room. It’s great when there are different types of lighting in the living room: main, local and intimate light. The mood of the room and our mood depend on how we change the lighting.

- the main type of room lighting, which includes work lights (spotlights) and a chandelier. A chandelier, in turn, can initially be a highlight in the overall style of the room, and only then perform its main function.
Toward the local light
include all kinds of floor lamps, table lamps and sconces. I would like to note that this type of lamps, such as sconces, rarely fit into the overall style of a living room, especially a modern one, so it would be better to replace one sconce with two original lamps. 
Intimate light
- these are garlands and candles. Interior garlands burn with an even, unblinking light, usually warm white, thereby creating a fabulous and uniquely cozy atmosphere in the living room and acting as a night light.
Candles
. Here I would like to note that multi-sized, single-colored candles of large sizes will look most advantageous in the interior, and white candles with a slightly rough or matte surface would be an ideal option.
Zoning
. The lamps are ideal for zoning, especially in combined rooms. A kitchen-living room requires task lighting in the kitchen area, as well as several pendant lights above the bar and dining table. The living room also needs both main light and local light. We recommend placing warm lamps behind the sofa and placing a floor lamp next to the chair.
How to arrange a small living room?
Whatever the design concept for the room, it should have a warm, welcoming atmosphere. There are many components working for this purpose:
