Today's furniture market offers a wide selection of different options for bedroom equipment, and although many of them are distinguished by increased comfort and beauty, they are not available to everyone. And it’s not always about their price: not every apartment has the space necessary to accommodate them.
Sleeping on a bunk bed or loft bed is always more interesting - and not only that.
Many families still live in rather cramped conditions, which dictates the conditions for choosing furniture. And in this case, preference is given to bunk beds, which are in great demand.
The IKEA chain of stores offers products for all tastes and financial capabilities.
Advantages and disadvantages of the IKEA bunk bed
Speaking about the advantages of IKEA beds, the following are noted:
- High quality of the material from which they are made;
- Strength and reliability of structures;
- The widest range of colors;
- Variety of models;
- Possibility of use by children and adults;
- Compact and multifunctional;
- Wide price range;
- A variety of design solutions allows you to fit the design into any interior.
Among the main advantages of IKEA bunk beds, they note their ability to save room space and avoid unnecessary expenses on purchasing additional furniture.
Additional products
Often, in addition to the bed, linen boxes are made in which you can store bed linen and children's clothes. The loft bed model includes a table and drawers for things, and the bed itself is located above the table. This is a very convenient option for a small children's room. With this design you can save space. But this model is suitable for older children, at least six years old.
And transforming cribs come with a changing table and a linen closet. You can change the mattress in any bed; Ikea offers a wide range. It is also possible to replace the slatted bottom. Protective bumpers can also be purchased separately if the selected bed does not include one.
How to choose the right material
IKEA offers a wide selection of products made from various materials, the most popular of which are:
- Tree
- Metal
- Plastic.
Solid wood is a high-quality natural “warm” environmentally friendly raw material.
Among the most popular types of wood for making bunk beds are:
- Oak, from which products with an unlimited service life are made; they are beautiful, durable and reliable, fit perfectly into any interior, but are quite expensive;
- High-quality and beautiful structures are made from solid birch, but they are also not cheap;
- Beech, ash, alder wood has magnificent shades and will decorate any product; their cost is lower than oak and birch;
- Solid pine is the most common material for making bunk beds, it is of high quality and the cheapest.
When choosing pine products, you need to pay attention to ensuring that there are as few traces of knots as possible on it, otherwise it will soon begin to collapse.
The metal base is strong and durable, while it gives the product a certain lightness and delicacy. At the same time, when choosing products whose frame is made of metal, it is necessary to pay attention to the quality of processing of the metal elements.
They should not have cracks, burrs, or chips.
Plastic is commonly used to make bunk beds for little ones. They are presented in a wide range of colors and a variety of models.
The design of such beds is often associated with fairy-tale images.
The bed is not large
The Ikea company produces children's sliding beds. If the children's room is small, you can buy beds that look small, but in fact everything is hidden inside.
For comfortable placement of the child, it extends. The mechanism is durable and there is no risk of breakage. The entire design is also excellent in quality.
Does not require much maintenance in operation.
Your baby will sleep comfortably. It is made from high quality wood.
Of course, Ikea metal children's beds are also found in the catalogue. They are more durable, but also more expensive. The frame is made of metal, it is soldered together and combined into one structure.
Don’t be afraid, the metal will not rust, because it has a layer of a special composition that protects the metal from damage.
What to especially pay attention to when choosing
Purchasing furniture in a store is always a serious and responsible matter, so you need to choose it slowly, paying attention to the design features. It is worth considering that IKEA offers only high quality products from trusted manufacturers.
However, this does not eliminate the need to carefully check the selected model.
- It is necessary to examine the bottom of the upper berth: it should be made of durable solid wood slats and provide good support for the body.
For an adult, it is determined by weight; for a child, it is determined by the desire to jump on the bed. - Among the dangerous elements, the quality of which requires serious inspection, there may be a staircase to the second floor if it:
- Made from low-quality material;
- Inconveniently located;
- Manufactured with violations of technology;
- It has burrs, cracks, and chips, which increases the possibility of injury during use.
As a rule, IKEA in Moscow and other cities pays the most serious attention to the quality of the staircase, which practically eliminates problems with its use.
- The quality of the material is important, especially the degree of its “maturity”. After drying, the raw material “warps”, the bed begins to creak, and its deformation is possible. When choosing products made from solid pine, you need to check the surface: on a quality product there should be no traces of knots, or their number should be minimal.
Otherwise, despite the fact that a product with traces of knots looks quite impressive, it will soon become unusable. - Functionality: the presence of a full-fledged sleeping place and desk, drawers, wardrobe, sofa in the set will determine the use of the product: only for sleeping or for sleeping, working and relaxing.
- It is imperative to check the presence and strength of the sides on the second tier, as well as the strength and stability of the ladder to the top.
If a bed is purchased for adults, it is better if the staircase is located at a certain angle, without creating inconvenience when climbing to the second floor and descending, which will eliminate the possibility of the structure tipping over.
Types of children's beds
First you need to decide what type of bed you need. There are many of them, each with its own characteristics. Here are the most popular cribs:
- Cradle. This is a very comfortable bed for little ones. It is like a nest for a newborn, it will be cozy and comfortable for sleeping. You can rock your baby in it for a more comfortable sleep.
- Pendulum. This is a reliable crib with a pendulum mechanism. Helps your baby fall asleep quickly and easily by gently rocking him to sleep. Thanks to special clamps, it can easily be turned into a cradle.
- Rocking bed. It has arched runners, thanks to which it quickly turns from a classic bed into a cradle and vice versa.
- Classic bed. This is the most popular crib, it is stable and durable. This is a reliable design, designed for children from birth to four years. Additionally, it can be equipped with drawers for storing children's things.
- Transformable bed. This crib is designed to last for a long time. It easily transforms from a small crib to a full-fledged teenage one.
- Pull-out bed. This is a sleeping place for a child aged about five years. As the child grows, the bed can be extended in length.
IMPORTANT! The bassinet bed is not suitable for children over 6 months old. Therefore, in addition to it, you will have to buy another, larger one. For longer use, it is better to choose a classic or transformer.
Dimensions
When choosing a two-tier structure, you definitely need to pay attention to its dimensions. If it is purchased for an adult or teenager, then its parameters must be at least 90x200 cm. It is worth considering that for a child who is still growing, it must be purchased taking into account an additional length of at least twenty centimeters.
If a bed is chosen for children, it is important to pay attention to the height of the product.
Taking into account the fact that not every room has high ceilings, and children, as you know, love to jump on the bed, the sleeping area may end up right under the ceiling, which can lead to head and spinal injuries. Therefore, when purchasing a product for a child, preference should be given to beds with a height of 160 to 180 cm.
It is important to note that the design in the nursery should not be bulky and “fall out” from the overall interior of the room.
How we assembled the STURO bed
So, they bring you 3 huge boxes with beams and fasteners. Now we need to put this whole thing together. The bed comes with very clear instructions. It immediately shows that one person will definitely not assemble it. In my opinion, two people are also not enough. The three of us assembled it within 2-3 hours.
Get ready to strictly follow every step of the instructions and carefully study which beam is inserted where (can be seen by the number of holes shown on one side or another). We, tired, inserted one beam the wrong way, then we had to unscrew half to turn it into place.
Here are the instructions on 30-40 pages, the boards, all the screws included are designed almost exactly the same, so it’s better not to lose or break

Pros, cons and features of the STURO loft bed
I will describe here, according to my feelings and understanding, the pros and cons of this bed. Maybe it will help someone
Pros:
- Great for one-room apartments.
You can place a double bed with almost any mattress of your choice, while still leaving room for guests to relax. - The slatted wooden bottom is an extra step towards a good night's sleep.
It cannot be compared with either a sofa or a metal mesh (as, for example,
in a similar loft bed TROMSO
) - Below there is quite a large space between the beams, almost a room within a room.
With my height of 170 cm, I walk calmly without bending under the bed. We placed a small sofa, a floor lamp, a coffee table below... if you wish, you can also put a bookcase. - Very nice material - durable solid pine.
Then the whole apartment smells deliciously of wood for a very long time. - The ladder is attached on both the right and left sides.
It seems like a small thing, but it is very important. For example, with our layout, the staircase could only be placed on the right, otherwise it would get in the way. - The steps on the stairs are stable.
For example, I really enjoy getting up. My foot never slipped anywhere. And bare feet on wood is an additional pleasure. - Additional comfort zone.
It often happens in a family that one person wants to sleep peacefully, the other wants to do some noisy things. On the top floor of this bed you almost immediately “switch off” and there is almost no extraneous sounds to distract you. - You can afford a small glove compartment.
Situation 1. It’s late at night, a crowd of noisy, cheerful friends has just visited your cozy one-room apartment, scattering glasses of cocktails and tea, plates and crumbs all over the floor in a cheerful frenzy. If putting away the dishes is not a big problem, then washing the floor at 2-3 am is a terrible problem. I climbed to the second floor, rested, and cleaned up in the morning. Beauty! Situation2. You woke up and realized that you were late for work... or just laziness overtook you in the morning. You can afford not to clean the bed: a crumpled blanket and a crumpled pillowcase on the pillow will still not be visible. And a minimal amount of dust settles there. - During cold times, sleeping on the second floor is warmer.
Hot air rises. Accordingly, it is always warmer on the second floor. - Versatile, you can come up with various applications.
The bed is unlikely to remain idle. If, for example, you have a child, you can give this bed to him. If you are moving to a more spacious apartment and you no longer need a bunk bed, cut the legs and get a regular frame.
Minuses:
- If you don't attach the bed to the wall, it will wobble.
We haven’t secured it in any way yet, you can sleep... and not just sleep) But you can still secure it so as not to worry. - There is not enough space between the ceiling and the bed.
In a standard apartment with 2.7 m ceilings, you can hit your head on the ceiling if you sit down suddenly. You can cut the legs, but then you will hit your head below. In general, we didn’t, it seems to be not bad. - There may be little air at the top.
The downside of the second floor: less air. At night we open the window in the kitchen, it seems to be fresh and warm to sleep at the same time. - Half the room away.
If the room is smaller than a standard room, then the bed will either take up most of it or will not fit at all. Our bed ends right where the chandelier begins. - Sometimes I'm too lazy to go down.
Sometimes you want to drink in the middle of the night but are too lazy to go down
Peculiarities:
The STURO bed has comfortable sides that protect against falling. You can also attach some kind of fabric organizer or shelf to them. I bought a regular hanging shelf that they sell for kitchens. It looks good, it’s very cool to put all sorts of little things there and you don’t have to drill anything into the wall.

Ikea bumper - what is it and how to apply it?
The protective side is provided for active fidgets. The side can provide not only safe sleep at night, but also prevents falling from the bed to the floor during daytime games.
The largest furniture company Ikea produces its own range of cribs with protection.
But, unfortunately, not all children's beds from other manufacturers are equipped with a side. That is why Ikea specialists decided to create a removable protective structure that will fit almost any model.
The side can be attached both to the original series from Ikea and to furniture from other companies; you just need to take into account the width of the standard wall.
This attribute is durable and suitable for a child of any age. The panel does not block the child's viewing area, and therefore does not interfere with knowledge of the outside world. Due to the protection, children feel safe and relax more easily during sleep.
Parents also sleep better: they are confident that their child will not accidentally end up on the floor.
