Magnetic wall in the interior: what is it like and how to use it?

In the previous article, we talked about unusual chalk slate paints, thanks to which you can easily take notes on surfaces painted with them, make a shopping list, and draw with chalk.

Today we will tell you about another type of unusual paint and varnish products - the so-called magnetic paints. They are named so because the walls painted with them turn into magnets, thanks to which any small item can be attached to such surfaces: from a towel hook to a picture, without a single nail.

No. 1. Magnetic paint: features and advantages

Magnetic paint allows you to attach drawings and notes to the wall without making holes in the surface. In a similar way, you can organize part of the wall in a nursery, office, hallway or kitchen. A space decorated with magnets, photographs and drawings will look interesting and unusual. The secret of magnetic paint lies in the presence of iron particles in the composition . The basis of the material is latex-based water-based paint.

You can often find another name for this material - magnetic soil , which appeared after it began to be used as a base for other coatings, because the magnetic properties do not decrease. Today, magnetic primer is often used as a base for slate paint , resulting in a surface on which you can safely draw, and to which magnets can be attached.

Magnetic paints can be applied to various types of surfaces:

  • concrete;
  • tree;
  • plywood and chipboard, fibreboard, plasterboard.

It is recommended to apply the material in several layers to ensure the maximum possible magnetic properties. It is still not recommended to use large magnets, but a wall painted with magnetic paint will hold small and medium ones without any problems.

The main advantages of the material:

  • no unpleasant odor;
  • high adhesion to different base materials;
  • high level of fire resistance;
  • complete safety for human health, so the material can be used even in children’s rooms;
  • the ability to muffle electromagnetic radiation from various types of equipment.

Areas of application

Magnetic soil can be used for various purposes. It opens up real scope for creativity.

The most common areas:

General educational institutions. The use of regular school boards in classrooms and auditoriums does not allow placing a large amount of information at the same time, so you have to wipe the chalk surface from time to time. A magnetic wall allows you to accommodate a much larger amount of data, which can remain on it throughout the entire lesson.

Another place where the use of this coating is extremely convenient is the kitchen. A refrigerator can be considered a kind of analogue of such a surface. However, it is often small in size, which can create inconvenience when there are an abundance of magnets and stickers. When using paint, the area covered will depend only on your imagination.

In entertainment establishments, it is also convenient to place the necessary information, menus and reviews not on information stands, but on the wall surface. The same applies to meeting rooms when work involves a large number of projects and schedules.

The idea of using such finishing in children's rooms is simply ideal. Drawings made on the ground are easily erased. This is especially convenient for families with small children. The color of the walls will not change over time

In addition, they are convenient for placing crafts and notes with important information that will always be in sight

Such a covering will not be out of place when arranging a work office. The most important information can always be kept in sight. It is also convenient to place diplomas, certificates and other documents about personal and professional achievements on the walls.

When attaching canvases and posters with tape, nails and glue, the ordinary surface can be hopelessly damaged. In the case of magnets, the problem solves itself.

No. 2. Where to use magnetic paint?

The scope of use of magnetic paint is wide. Here are just a few possible examples:

  • in kindergartens and schools, you can cover walls intended for displaying visual material or creative works of children;
  • in the cafe;
  • in offices, where you can attach necessary notes, reminders, phone numbers to the wall;
  • in the kitchen you can magnetize recipes, notes to household members, and a shopping list to the wall;
  • in children's rooms.

Manufacturers of the material say that you can even glue wallpaper on top of the magnetic primer, and promise that the properties of holding magnets will remain unchanged.

The school boards familiar to all of us today are widely used in home interiors. You can cover anything with slate paint, but the end result is not just a surface on which you can paint, but a real decorative element. Today, walls decorated with slate paint can often be found in cafes and shops.

The material is made on a latex basis and is water soluble. After drying, the paint forms a durable surface on which you can draw with chalk as many times as you like, erase the drawings and paint again.

The main advantages of slate paint:

  • hard, durable and wear-resistant coating;
  • environmentally friendly, safe, odorless;
  • beautiful matte surface, which can have any shade, although more often on sale you can find material in black and green colors;
  • fire safety;
  • inscriptions can be easily erased from the surface using water and soap.

The many advantages of the coating have led to the fact that today paint is beginning to be actively used as an independent coating , and not just a way to highlight a separate part of the wall for subsequent decoration with drawings.

If you use magnetic primer before applying slate paint, you can get an even more interesting and functional surface that can be used for educational activities, creativity and interior decoration.

Advantages and disadvantages of the material

Modern coatings have a minimum of disadvantages, but their advantages are undeniable. Slate type paints have the following advantages:

  • create a very durable, hard coating that is practically not subject to wear, abrasion, or mechanical damage;
  • are characterized by good adhesion (adhesion) to most known surfaces, even with smooth types of glass and ceramics, which increases the area of operation;
  • do not give shine, which allows you to draw with comfort and easily erase the inscriptions, wash the coating with water and detergents;
  • do not pose a fire hazard, do not explode;
  • due to environmental friendliness, they can be used in children's rooms and are odorless;
  • easy to apply with your own hands, dry quickly;
  • some paints include antiseptics, so they are used even in high humidity;
  • The product can be used to cover an entire wall or highlight individual elements and use it to decorate surfaces with drawings;
  • the material creates space for children's creativity; such decor can be located both in the children's room and in other parts of the apartment, even in the corridor;
  • Paintwork is very functional: in addition to traditional use as a board, it can replace a kitchen apron, decorate a door, and update boring interior items.

If magnetic particles are added to the paint, the finished surface will muffle electromagnetic radiation from household appliances and electronics. This is a plus and a minus at the same time - harm to humans is reduced, but the quality of the Wi-Fi signal decreases. The disadvantages include that the product cannot withstand low temperatures, therefore it is only suitable for interior work.

Other possible disadvantages:

  • if you do not wash the surface regularly, stains and stains will make the coating look sloppy;
  • the slate material may soon become boring, so the repair will have to be redone;
  • most often the paint is dark in color, which can make the room gloomy;
  • the material is not suitable for a small room due to the visual reduction of space;
  • slate coating is not suitable for a number of styles, for example, for classics; it will look best in loft and minimalist styles;
  • It will not be possible to create the effect of a chalkboard on an uneven surface - you will have to very carefully level the base;
  • the coating is so durable that drops can be wiped off only before it hardens, otherwise it will be difficult to remove defects;
  • the price of the material is very high - some paints cost up to 8,000 rubles per liter jar.

No. 4. Types of slate paint

Chalkboard paint is sold in sprays and in regular cans for application with a brush. The first option allows you to use material more economically, but if you need to paint small surfaces or hard-to-reach places, it is better to use a standard paint format and a brush.

On sale you can find ready-made slate paint in different shades . Also on store shelves there are compositions that can be tinted in any shade , which means that the slate surface can be not only black and green, but also any desired shade and fully meet the design idea.

Graphite paint for walls: application features

On a surface treated with a slate mixture, all kinds of design solutions are created that help place accents in the interior and set a specific style for the room.
Due to its durability characteristics, it has been used for many years in educational play centers for children. However, in order for such a surface not only to last for a long period of time, but also to look presentable over time, it is worth following some rules for applying the composition to the walls. If you apply 2 layers of graphite paint to the walls, then the strength of such a coating after hardening is characterized by greater density than a drawing board or desk.

A slate wall is an indispensable way to update your interior every day with new accents and an opportunity to make it individual. Daily updated slogans, recommendations, declarations of love or just emoticons are the best way to cheer up your family.

No. 5. Where to use slate paint?

Chalkboard paint has excellent adhesion to materials such as drywall, brick, metal, wood and wood boards, plaster, glass, ceramics , etc., which makes the scope of use of the material infinitely wide.

Slate paint is an excellent option for children's rooms , because kids love to draw on the walls and often spoil the wallpaper with their creativity. Slate paint can be used to cover the entire wall or most of it so that children can give free rein to their imagination. In the kitchen, you can also decorate part of the wall with slate paint, and write recipes or messages for household members on it. You can also use the material in the bedroom, living room and hallway, in cafes and shops , supermarkets and shopping centers.

You can paint with slate paint not only walls, but also all kinds of interior items : the doors of an old refrigerator, kitchen cabinets, dresser drawers, countertops, flowerpots, cups, jars, boxes for storing small items and many other things. For drawing, it is better to use soft crayons without foreign inclusions that can scratch the material.

Rules for using graphite paint: preparation and painting

The main feature of working with graphite paint is its ease and ease of application. There is no need for special knowledge, experience or special professional tools. It is enough to purchase a regular painter’s kit, which includes:

  • paint tray;
  • brushes of different types;
  • construction roller.

Before starting work, surfaces that are not to be painted should be thoroughly covered with cellophane film, since even with all the care of application, drops may get on the floor, which are very difficult to remove. To protect against paint, cover window sills, window frames and doors with paper tape.

Graphite paint hardens very quickly, so it must be applied very carefully.

The wall to be painted must be carefully leveled:

  • remove old paint and wallpaper;
  • remove old peeling putty material and apply a new layer;
  • coat the surface with primer.

If the wall is old, then it is best to completely remove the worn putty and re-putty the surface, and then apply a primer that is suitable for this type of paint. Only after this procedure can you start painting.

The surface painting itself is very simple. The main thing is that the base for application is clean, free of dust and dirt. The paint must first be thoroughly mixed and then poured a little into a special tray or other container, as it hardens quickly. Next, taking a small amount of product with a roller or brush, distribute it on the surface. After two hours, the second layer is applied. You can draw and write on a slate board after three days.

The magnetic coating after slate paint is applied a day later, if the iron-magnetic powder has not yet been added to the composition of the paint and varnish.

Three days after application, you can draw and take notes on the slate coating

What kind of material?

Using slate paint you can create a beautiful matte finish on the walls. The finished surface will remain resistant to washing with either a dry or wet cloth.

Nuance! If you are going to wash the walls with a damp cloth, you should initially buy first class . The third and second classes are less resistant to wet cleaning. This is worth considering.

Slate paint makes it possible to subsequently draw on the wall using crayons, and not only with white, but with any color in general. In most cases, such compositions are produced in black, but this does not exclude versions with light shades, which are also great for painting.

Magnetic paint has a slightly different meaning. This material contains iron, thanks to which the finished wall will attract magnets. When using magnetic ink, you only need to apply 2-3 layers! Moreover, the more paint there is on the wall, the more strongly it will attract magnets.

In most cases, magnetic and slate paint is used to decorate children's rooms, kitchens and corridors. At the same time, the material can be used for painting equipment, doors and various pieces of wooden furniture. In the latter case, the surface should be well sanded .

An important point is that magnetic compounds are excellent as a basis for applying slate material. As a result, the finished wall will not only attract magnets, but will also allow you to draw on its surface with crayons.

Important point! If you are going to use both types for repairs at once, then you should not confuse the order of applying the material to the wall: first comes the magnetic paint, and then the slate paint. And nothing else!

There is no need to try to replace the primer with magnetic compounds. To achieve the best and highest quality results, the primer must be used clearly.

We invite you to watch a video that clearly shows and talks about the material, its varieties and method of application:

No. 7. DIY slate and magnetic paint

Slate and magnetic coating are solid advantages, if not for their price. Yes, of course, products from domestic manufacturers are cheaper, but for those who want to save money and are not afraid to spend a little time and effort, there is also a budget option to create original decor.

To create slate paint, you will need acrylic paint of the required shade and in the required quantity. Add cement or tile grout to it in a ratio of 2 tablespoons per glass of paint and mix thoroughly until a homogeneous structure is obtained. That's it, the material is ready for use. It is better to apply it in two layers, it is better to let each layer dry for at least 12 hours.

If you add a dry magnetic primer to the composition, replacing part of the cement with it, you can get a magnetic slate coating . magnetic paint with your own hands by adding cement and metal dust to acrylic paint, although the latter is not so easy to obtain.

Whatever composition you use, store-bought or home-made, it is very easy to cope with the process of painting any surface and even a novice in repair matters can do it.

Surface preparation and painting

To work with paint and varnish materials you do not need special knowledge or expensive tools. You need to buy a standard painter's kit: paint container, roller, brush. Despite careful application, difficult-to-remove drops may remain on the floor, so the coating should be covered with cellophane. Window sills, frames, doorways are covered with paper tape.

As a surface preparation measure, you need to carefully level the wall. Separating pieces of putty must be removed, old wallpaper must be removed, although smooth canvases can be painted on top after preliminary priming. If the wall is old, the ideal option is to completely remove the coating layer, perform leveling according to the standard scheme, and only then paint. The last layer is always a high-quality primer (regular, for the corresponding surface).

Painting a wall is pretty easy

It is important that there is no dirt or dust on the base that could settle after priming. You need to mix the paint in a jar, pour it into a small container

Using a dampened roller or brush, carefully spread the material over the wall surface. After 2 hours, you can apply the second layer, and you can use the surface (drawing) after 3 days

If necessary, a day after application, magnetic priming is additionally done with a composition containing iron powder. During the first month of operation, it is allowed to wash the wall only with water, and after that it is permissible to use not too aggressive household chemicals.
