Chalkboard paint for walls: cheerful notes in a modern interior
The modern market for paints and varnishes is so wide that the average person is simply at a loss with the choice of suitable material. For those who keep up with fashion, a relatively recent invention - slate paint . This coating allows you to give surfaces an unusual look, similar to a blackboard. This article will tell you in more detail about the advantages and disadvantages of the material and the features of its application.
You can write, draw and take notes on the slate wall.
Slate effect paint: main characteristics
Slate paint or slate paint is a relatively new material on the finishing materials market. It is distinguished by its versatility and at the same time originality. They can cover walls in any room - be it a kitchen, hallway, children's room or living room. The uniqueness lies in the fact that this is paint on which you can draw and write, and then, if not needed, the inscriptions and drawings can simply be erased with an ordinary sponge.
Chalk notes can be easily erased from the slate surface using a damp sponge.
Thanks to this feature, the paint and varnish product is popularly called “chalk”. The texture is matte and rough to the touch. The slate coating has a strong hold after application. The history of the appearance of paint with a slate effect is directly connected with the school, or rather with the school board - the material was created with the aim of restoring its coating. Sophisticated designers quickly found application for slate LMK in the interiors of residential apartments.
Using this type of paint, you can radically change the atmosphere in the room, making it unusual and stylish. Graphite wall paint plays both a decorative and practical role in a room. In addition to decoration, it can serve as entertainment and education for children.
Adding magnetic powder to the material in special proportions creates a surface on which magnets and metal objects hold well. The powder can be replaced with a magnetic primer, which is applied after the paint has dried. To apply slate coating to walls, no special preparation is required. It can be applied both to an empty surface and to wallpaper to be painted. This way, an ordinary wall will become a great place for art and games, with the ability to easily and quickly change its design.
On a note! Covering walls with slate paint opens up opportunities for children's creativity. Parents do not have to worry that children will ruin expensive wallpaper, using it as a basis for realizing their artistic skills. The graphite surface is a wall on which you can draw.
Adding magnetic powder to paint creates a magnetic surface on which metal objects can be placed.
Magnetic slate paint set
The magnetic slate paint kit allows you to get a coating on which you can draw with chalk and attach magnets. The kit consists of several materials that must be applied sequentially in accordance with the instructions.

- Offices. For conducting productive meetings with employees, planning tasks, or recording important information before your eyes, walls with magnetic slate coating are ideal.
- Reception Stylishly decorate the walls with lettering, change the design for important events and seasons, leave important information and announcements for employees using chalk and magnets on a magnetic slate coating.
- Partitions. With the help of magnetic slate coating, partitions can be made more useful for employees: on the slate surface it will be possible not only to attach stickers and magnets, but also to regularly update inscriptions - tasks, plans, ratings.
- Cafeteria. What's the menu today? How much does a cup of coffee cost? How much water should I order? Who's birthday is it today? – everything can be written down on a magnetic slate wall.
In education:
- Kindergartens and development clubs. Magnetic slate coating will not only create a durable and wear-resistant coating on the walls that can be easily washed in case of any surprise, but will also create a surface that teachers and children can actively use for games, learning and drawing.
- Schools. There is no need to spend money every year on expensive and inconvenient school boards, on which the chalk also slips. You can apply a magnetic slate coating to the walls and not limit the space for visually demonstrating educational materials. Based on the experience of using magnetic slate coatings at the Artek school, children are much more willing to be involved in the educational process and more actively go not “to the board”, but to the entire slate wall.
- Universities. For the large amount of information that needs to be conveyed to students, for the ability to effectively carry out teamwork, for an adequate modern approach in education, school boards are not suitable - only magnetic slate coating on the walls will allow these tasks to be effectively implemented.
- Trainings, master classes, seminars. Magnetic corrugated coating can be an excellent backdrop for effective site design - lettering, lesson materials, updated links, tags and other information.
Examples of using magnetic slate coating can be seen in projects on our blog and on our Instagram page.
Unlike conventional slate boards, the resulting coating is much more durable, can be of any shape and size, does not take up space in the room and does not require disposal.

Magnetic slate coatings in Artek.
Creation of interactive walls at Moscow school No. 2109.
Kit contents: – magnetic primer Siberia x2 (included in the kit for 4 sq. mm – 2 l, for 2 sq.m – 1 l), – leveling composition – finishing putty 1 kg, – primer after putty Euro Primer 1 l, – slate paint Siberia (in sets for 4 sq.m. - 1 l; for 2 sq.m. - 0.5 l). To obtain a magnetic slate surface, it is necessary to correctly follow the sequence of application of layers and the instructions for applying each paint.
Preparation for applying magnetic slate coating: Before applying the components of the kit, it is necessary to prepare the area for painting: cover the adjacent surfaces with film to prevent paint from getting on them, limit the contours of the painting with masking tape to obtain an even border. The surface to be applied must be flat, clean, smooth, dry and free of grease. It is recommended to clean problematic surfaces (crumbling, chalking, flaking, affected by fungus or corrosion) to the base in advance, cover them with special products to avoid recurrence of these problems, putty or prime them. Must be applied to dry, primed substrates with neutral pH. For substrates exposed to internal moisture, sealing is recommended to prevent staining of the finish.
Types of surface and necessary preparation: 1) wood, plywood, MDF - sanded until smooth (if necessary), coated with acrylic primer for wooden bases; 2) metal - wash, dry, coat with a special anti-corrosion primer for surfaces affected by rust, then coat with a blocking acrylic primer intended for metal substrates; 3) drywall - protect the base from possible penetration of moisture, cover with acrylic primer; 4) concrete – plaster and prime; 5) a wall with old paint - remove the top layer of paint to the base, putty and prime the surface, 6) wallpaper - only smooth non-woven wallpaper with high-quality fastening can be considered as the basis for a magnetic slate set. Other types of wallpaper must be removed, cleaned, and then the base must be primed. For non-woven wallpaper, it is necessary to take into account that the magnetic slate coating creates an additional load on it, and defects in the fastening of such wallpaper can lead to peeling. It is not recommended to use textured and embossed wallpaper, as chalk can subsequently accumulate in uneven areas and spoil the appearance of the surface.
Application:
- Metal primer . Mix the contents of the jar thoroughly. When applying a new layer, the soil must be thoroughly mixed each time. Metal primer can be applied with a thick foam roller in 2-3 layers at intervals of 60 minutes, smoothing each layer with a spatula. For the fastest and most convenient application, we recommend applying the composition directly with a spatula.
- To obtain the most professional and smooth coating, it is recommended to additionally level the magnetic layer using a thin layer of DanoBox putty from the kit and fine-grained sandpaper. After sanding the putty, it is necessary to remove dust from the surface.
- This paragraph applies only to light and bright colors of the tinted lead set. After the metal primer layer has completely dried, but not earlier than 24 hours, it is necessary to apply a white acrylic covering primer in one or two layers, for example, Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3.
- Slate paint. After the previous layers have completely dried, apply the slate coating with a dense foam roller or a roller with a pile of up to 4 mm in two layers with an interval of 1 hour between them.
- You can draw on the coating with soft crayons within a couple of hours after drying. We recommend leaving the coating to dry for 48 hours to cure.
The coating acquires all the declared characteristics of wear resistance and strength within a week after painting. If it is necessary to clean the coating during this period, you can use a damp soft cloth. About a week after painting, the finished coating can be cleaned with neutral (ph 6-8) detergents using a soft cloth or sponge. Especially dirty surfaces can be cleaned with weak alkaline detergents (ph 8-10). After cleaning, the surface must be thoroughly washed with clean water.
Repainting can be done directly over the old slate coating.
When the surface gets wet, there may be a slight change in the shade of the paint, which completely disappears after drying.
It is recommended to use calcium carbonate chalk and a felt/velor cloth. Neodymium magnets and magnetic holders are ideal for attaching to the magnetizing layer.
Consumption: All components of the kits are selected taking into account the required number of layers to obtain a magnetic slate coating with an area of 2 sq.m. and 4 sq.m.
Recommendations for use: — To reduce chalk dust and stains, we recommend using dust-free chalk and dry pastels when drawing. — Before using chalk markers on a surface, we recommend making sure that they are suitable for slate surfaces. To do this, you need to make a mark with a marker in the corner, preferably on an inconspicuous area of the coating, wait a minute, and then try to erase the mark with a damp sponge. Each color of markers, even from the same manufacturer, must be tested separately.

Chalkboard paint: features of the composition of the product
The basis of slate paint is latex. This product is highly soluble in water and does not contain harmful substances that may pose a health hazard. The uniqueness of the appearance of this paint and varnish product and, as a result, the texture of the slate board, lies in the fact that the composition contains the smallest iron elements, which turn the surface after drying into a real magnetic board.
The matte texture of the coating is given by components such as cement, gypsum, acrylic-based resin, marble chips, modifiers, and dolomite. All this together creates the effect of a school board. Photos of a wall covered with such material clearly demonstrate this. The difference is that the chalkboard paint is green, and the wall in the room can be painted with any color.
You can cover completely different surfaces with slate paint. The main basis is concrete walls. However, they must first be coated with plaster, putty and primer.
Graphite LMC also fits well on the following substrates:
- drywall;
- metal;
- wallpaper;
- glass;
- ceramics;
- wood and all surfaces based on compressed wood (fibreboard, chipboard, OSB).
Latex compositions of graphite paints are absolutely safe for human health.

Chalk paint for walls: variety of species and various forms of release
Taking into account the color spectrum, you can find the following slate-colored paints on sale:
- black;
- graphite;
- brown;
- purple;
- blue;
- green;
- white.
They can be used both independently and in the process of coloring, that is, mixing different colors. Adding white paint allows you to get different shades.
The product is also classified according to the form of release of the material. It can be:
- aerosol sprays;
- ordinary cans of paint in different packaging.
Aerosols are applied by simple spraying, and products from jars are applied with a brush or roller. If you are going to paint a large surface area, then you need to stock up on a magnetic slate paint set and a variety of painting supplies in advance. In hard-to-reach places for painting, it is better to use paint in cans. In a similar way, it is better to paint small areas and individual interior items.
In addition to the standard black and green colors, slate paints are available in white and other shades.
Taking into account the properties and content, slate paints are divided into the following subtypes:
- classic chalk wall paint;
- marker paint, which is used as a basis for drawing not with chalk, but with special markers for a slate board;
- magnetic paint with a chalkboard effect with iron additives, which
- provides the coating with magnetic properties.
On a note! In order to obtain a durable coating, you should apply not one, but two or three layers of paint. This condition is mandatory if the wall is used as a magnetic board. Insufficient application density of chalkboard paint with a magnetic effect will result in metal objects not sticking to the coating.

Brief overview of existing options on the market
a large selection of magnetic paint on the construction market . You can choose the right one for yourself. Here are a few options as advice.
Tikkurila Magnetic
Chalkboard magnetic paint with blackboard effect from ] Tikkuril[/anchor].
This type of paint is often used in educational institutions. Not only for walls, which can become a new analogue solution, replacing the outdated blackboard. It is also an effective material for restoring the coating of old boards .
The main advantage of this global brand is its high wear resistance. The manufacturer guarantees that after complete drying, the magnetic primer will withstand up to 5 thousand wires with a brush . The surface is also easy to clean without damaging the coating.
It is necessary to apply the paint in several layers to get a good result.
Don’t forget that it needs to be diluted , otherwise the thickness will increase paint consumption; even when finishing, you should use a special short-haired roller to avoid overuse.
It is important to apply paint to a perfectly smooth wall surface, this way you will avoid possible defects and significantly save on the amount of paint.
Magpaint
One of the latest brands on the Russian market is Magpaint. Judging by the reviews of those who have tested this magnetic paint, they are mostly positive. Even professionals noted the quality of this type of magnetic coating.
Judging by the consumption, 1 liter of paint is enough for 2 m2 ; it must be applied in three layers to get a good result.
A special feature of this magnetic coating is the ability to be located even on the most difficult surfaces:
- Drywall;
- Tree;
- Plastic;
- Metal.
Siberia
Inexpensive version of slate paint with a metallic effect siberia. If you cover the selected area with this paint, then after drying the surface will withstand drawing not only with ordinary chalk, but also with slate chalk.
The main advantage of this type of magnetic paint is the highest level of durability , up to 10 thousand brush treatments.
But that’s not all, it’s worth mentioning a special ingredient in the paint that protects against the development of fungus .
Therefore, this paint is ideal even for damp rooms like the kitchen. An excellent solution for covering external walls.
Whatever type of magnetic paint you choose before work, read the instructions for use to avoid overuse and possible defects.
Disadvantages of magnetic chalkboard paint for walls
One of the main disadvantages of slate paint is its high sensitivity to low temperatures, at which it is destroyed, so it can only be used for indoor decoration.
A wall covered with this type of paint coating requires regular washing to prevent the formation of stains and stains, which create a sloppy appearance and the surface loses its attractiveness and aesthetics.
Among other disadvantages, it should be noted that slate paint for a board can quickly become satiated and boring, and new repairs will soon need to be made. In addition, the dark color that this type of paint material predominantly has creates a gloomy look in the room. For this same reason, paint is not suitable for covering walls in small rooms, as it helps to visually reduce its area.
On a note! One of the properties of magnetic slate paint has both a positive and negative side. The peculiarity is that magnetic microparticles in the material on the walls muffle the impact of electromagnetic waves from electronics and household appliances. The advantage is that the negative impact on the human body is reduced, the disadvantage is that the quality of the Wi-Fi signal decreases.
You can draw and write on the marker surface with special markers.
Slate walls are not suitable for certain styles. For example, they are inappropriate in rooms with classic elements, but look great in interiors stylized as loft or minimalism.
Chalkboard paint is suitable for application only on a flat surface, otherwise the intended effect is lost. Therefore, to achieve the chalkboard look, you will need to carefully level the base first.
Rules for using graphite paint: preparation and painting
The main feature of working with graphite paint is its ease and ease of application. There is no need for special knowledge, experience or special professional tools. It is enough to purchase a regular painter’s kit, which includes:
- paint tray;
- brushes of different types;
- construction roller.
Before starting work, surfaces that are not to be painted should be thoroughly covered with cellophane film, since even with all the care of application, drops may get on the floor, which are very difficult to remove. To protect against paint, cover window sills, window frames and doors with paper tape.
Graphite paint hardens very quickly, so it must be applied very carefully.
The wall to be painted must be carefully leveled:
- remove old paint and wallpaper;
- remove old peeling putty material and apply a new layer;
- coat the surface with primer.
If the wall is old, then it is best to completely remove the worn putty and re-putty the surface, and then apply a primer that is suitable for this type of paint. Only after this procedure can you start painting.
The surface painting itself is very simple. The main thing is that the base for application is clean, free of dust and dirt. The paint must first be thoroughly mixed and then poured a little into a special tray or other container, as it hardens quickly. Next, taking a small amount of product with a roller or brush, distribute it on the surface. After two hours, the second layer is applied. You can draw and write on a slate board after three days.
The magnetic coating after slate paint is applied a day later, if the iron-magnetic powder has not yet been added to the composition of the paint and varnish.
Three days after application, you can draw and take notes on the slate coating.
Using chalk paint in the interior
Chalkboard paint is used very widely. Thanks to its safety, it can be used in children's educational institutions and not only for coloring blackboards on which you can draw with chalk. This type of paint is also used in cafes and offices for writing notes. At home, the material can be applied to walls in different rooms. It is especially popular in the children's room and kitchen.
On a note! Manufacturers of slate paints recommend washing the surface with exclusively clean water during the first month. Next, you can use chemical detergents, but without aggressive additives.
A slate wall in a nursery is an ideal space for a child’s learning and creative development. Children will not want to paint the walls in other rooms, having their own spacious “testing ground” for creativity. Older children can use the wall to memorize various educational material, for example, formulas, rules, tables.
In the kitchen and hallway, slate paint is usually used partially - to cover individual areas or interior items. A kitchen apron with this coating is popular: here you can write down recipes, grocery lists and menus for the day. Some types of paint can change color when heated or exposed to hot temperatures. This should be taken into account when organizing repairs. Individual items decorated with slate paint look beautiful. For example, cabinet doors, a bar counter, or even boxes for storing bulk products or flower pots.
The most popular place to use slate paint in the interior is the children's room.
In the hallway, paint is usually applied to the area near the front door in order to apply various notes and reminders to each other.

Chalkboard paint: price and consumer reviews
According to customer reviews, the slate coating is particularly durable and hardens quite quickly. Therefore, inappropriate drops that fall on surfaces that are not to be painted should be removed immediately before curing. Otherwise, it will be very difficult to eliminate them. Defects will have to be literally torn off, and if you try to paint over them with another type of product, the graphite paint and varnish will simply appear on the surface.
People with allergies should be careful when handling this type of interior design. It is not the product itself that is harmful, but the effect of dust from chalk, which is used to draw on a board covered with slate paint. Consumer reviews recommend wiping the coating more often and carrying out wet cleaning, and it is best to use special hypoallergenic marker paints.
For better adhesion of a smooth surface, such as glass or aluminum, to paint, experienced users recommend applying a special primer first.
People with chalk allergies can use marker surfaces in the room that they draw on with markers rather than chalk.
As for the price of graphite paint, it is quite high. The cost of some types of product reaches 8 thousand rubles. per jar of 1 liter.
On a note! Owners of catering establishments can successfully use slate paints and varnishes in the design of their premises. Graphite paint is used to cover walls or special stands where it is convenient to place important information for visitors. For example, about discounts, promotions or new items on the menu.
DIY slate paint: making recipes
Typically, slate paint is sold in cans or containers with a capacity of half a liter or a liter. Considering the high cost of products, sometimes such volumes are simply unnecessary, for example, when it is necessary to paint individual interior items or areas on the wall. For this purpose, you can prepare the material yourself. There are two popular methods.
For the first paint option you will need:
- 250 g acrylic paint;
- 50 g of dry cement mixture powder.
The slate composition can be easily prepared with your own hands at home.
The cooking process is simple. Simply mix both components and add the desired color pigment. It should be noted that cement-based products can quickly scratch. Therefore, it is better to add a little marble chips to the mixture. True, this technique complicates the cooking process a little.
For tinting, you can choose any shade, but bright colors, from deep purple to poisonous green, look best.
The second recipe for preparing paint requires the presence of the following components:
- 75 g of already tinted acrylic-based paint material;
- 25 g acrylic varnish with a matte texture;
- 25 g cement putty;
- 50 ml water.
First, cement powder is poured into the dishes, then paint and varnish are gradually added. Everything is thoroughly mixed and finally diluted with water. The product is ready for application to any surface.
Before application, it is necessary to carefully cover all surfaces from accidental contact with paint.
How to make it yourself?
The cost of finished magnetic paint for walls is quite high, starting from 1000 rubles and above, due to the composition. Not everyone can afford such luxury.
Why luxury? It’s just too much consumption of one liter jar, enough for only 2 m2. Therefore, the relevant question is, how can you save money?
There is an economical way to make your own paint. acrylic paint , the color is at your discretion.
Then add a cement-based building mixture to it. The proportions are as follows: for a glass of paint - 2 tablespoons of cement mixture.
This way you will get chalkboard-effect chalkboard paint. True, it does not have magnetic properties. To teach them as well, you need to add metal shavings to the paint . Try to make it as small as possible.
The most budget option can be considered this:
- Take a self-prepared varnish containing a solution of polystyrene foam in acetone.
- Add metal filings here and apply to the surface in several layers.
- Then cover it with regular varnish and paint it in the color you need with enamel.
Another way is to mix metal filings with a rust converter. Then add the mixture to rubber floor paint. You probably have a logical question: why is it necessary to resort to such manipulations?
The answer is simple, any iron rusts when in contact with water or air, so it is imperative to protect the sawdust , for example, using varnish or special processing solutions.

What is magnetic, slate and magnetic marker paint?
The slate coating allows you to create a matte surface on the wall that is resistant to washing and cleaning with a dry or wet cloth. There are 3 classes of coating strength:
- A quality product is characterized by first class strength.
- The second and third classes are not resistant to cleaning with a damp cloth or sponge.
Slate paint on which you can write with chalk - white, other colors available in different colors.
The most commonly used slate compounds are available in black, but other colors can be found, including light shades suitable for writing with a dark, bright marker. The purpose of magnetic paint is slightly different. It includes small particles of iron, and as a result the coating attracts a magnet. With magnetic ink, 2-3 layers are usually required. The coating increases the ability to attract a magnet as the layer thickness increases.
Slate and magnetic compositions are used for painting walls:
- kitchens,
- corridor,
- children's rooms.
They can be painted:
- wooden furniture elements,
- doors,
- equipment, for example, a refrigerator door, a dishwasher (it is worth sanding it with fine sandpaper first).
Magnetic paint can be used as a base for slate paint. Magnetic marker paint allows you to create a surface that attracts a magnet and allows you to draw on the wall with chalk. It is important to follow the order of application of various compositions - you should always apply the magnetic composition first, then the slate one. Magnetic paint should not be used as a substitute for primer; for long-lasting coverage, it should be used in any case.
