Cushions for garden furniture are somewhat different from ordinary sofa counterparts.
The requirements for them are more stringent; they must:
- be resistant to fading under the sun;
- be resistant to mechanical damage;
- be resistant to deformation;
- have permanent dyes that do not harm clothes;
- differ in the resistance of the filler structure in relation to weight loads.
An important nuance is the absence of small decor that can cause discomfort. There are no buttons or knitted braid that could accidentally get caught on.
The emphasis should be on pleasant colors and original shape. To make the product look as advantageous as possible, several identical pillows are made. The design of all chairs with the same accessories looks especially harmonious.
Pillow filler
The second important element in garden pillows is filler.
. It determines how comfortable it will be for you to sit on the furniture and how long the pillows will last. After all, fabric covers can be easily replaced, but changing the filling is equivalent to buying new pillows. Therefore, the filler must be durable, and for this it should not deform under the weight of guests sitting on it, change with temperature changes, or swell due to humidity.

- as a seat, in place of the backrest (lumbar) or for decorative purposes. If you are going to sit on a pillow, you need materials that are durable, hold their shape, and are resistant to deformation. For example, latex, polyurethane foam, Holcon or foam rubber. The latter is less durable, but much cheaper. Popular artificial fillers for decorative pillows are polystyrene balls (the kind used in soft toys), padding polyester and holofiber.
Material selection
The material for pillows and seats is chosen based on a number of nuances. He must:
- be pleasant to the body, but quite dense and durable;
- if possible, have mixed threads (contain equal parts natural and synthetic fibers);
- differ in special impregnation that ensures moisture resistance;
- be easy to care for;
- approach the landscape composition;
- be hypoallergenic, otherwise the product cannot be used;
- be aesthetically attractive;
- made in the form of a removable cover, allowing the filling to be cleaned and textiles to be washed.
Leather and its synthetic analogues do not meet the requirements. In hot weather they will cause discomfort to vacationers. An important indicator is the purpose of the pillow. If it is placed under the back, greater freedom in choosing the material is allowed. If it is a mattress pillow or seat, it should be made of thick textiles. For covers, you can use impregnated cotton, fleece, microfiber, tapestry, fiber, canvas material or furniture fabric. Silk and linen are not allowed as they wrinkle. Silk disrupts the texture on the very first day of use (the appearance of puffs). It is necessary to exclude materials with long pile and fur: they are quite difficult to wash.
If you have scraps at home, they usually try to use them. In this case, the fragments of the future pillow are selected so that the composition of the flaps is identical: this will prevent deformation of the fabric.
In some cases, old sweaters are used for pillows. Such material no longer shrinks, and not only performs an aesthetic function, but can also maintain heat.
Back cushion design
Size and quantity
As a rule, one large pillow or two smaller ones are used as a backrest.
But if they replace a long backrest (for example, above a bench or along a bed), their number can be expanded. Sometimes you can see not only three or four pillows on the wall, but even six or nine.
Pillows, if there are a lot of them, can be arranged in several rows.
Design
The back cushion is often flat. It looks more like a mattress or a mat. Quilted back mattresses look great.
Puffy pillows, including standard ones intended for sleeping, are also suitable.

Fastening
Typically, pillows are hung on a short curtain rod. To do this, loops or ties are sewn onto them, including those made from ribbons or braid.

An unusual solution is to hang a strong rope on the wall and secure light pillows to it using clothespins or other clamps.
If you plan to make a backrest of several rows of headrests, it is worth sewing ties to them, placing them both above and below. The top row of pillows is attached to the bar, and each subsequent row is tied to the previous one.
By the way, the pillows can be tied directly to the headboard if it is made of iron or wooden slats.
Color
The back of pillows can be neutral - white, beige, light gray. But more often they make it bright, because the choice of fabrics is large - there is always the opportunity to choose something spectacular and stylish.
Covers made of fabric with a pattern or ornament will add variety to a “smooth” and “flat” interior.
Pillowcases made of rich, plain fabric will turn the soft back into an expressive accent.
If desired, a headboard made of pillows can be made part of a single textile ensemble decorating the bed. Covers for a soft back, a valance, a bedspread, and pillowcases for decorative pillowcases can be sewn from common fabric.
Form
Often, pillows and seats for furniture are made in the shape of a square or rectangle. When choosing the shape of accessories for garden furniture, you can start from the shape of the furniture. What to consider?
When making a pillow with your own hands, you need to start from specific country furniture. If chairs made of plastic (for example, from Ikea) are used as a basis, elastic bands can be sewn to the cushions at the corners so that the accessories do not slide on the seat or backrests. If the furniture is made of solid wood, you can make textile pillow covers for the backs, tying them on the sides with strings. For a bench, a model without ties is sufficient.
When choosing a material, make sure that it is not slippery, otherwise the pillow will not provide comfort to the furniture. Before cutting out the product, perform decatering: iron the new textile with steam. This may cause it to shrink, but further deformation is excluded. Iron the material through a thin fabric from the wrong side so as not to form a lass on the surface.
Do not use cotton wool from an old mattress or blanket for padding. Crumpled filling can form lumps, which even quilting the pillows and seats will not help. This rule also applies to old fur coats: they are not suitable for stuffing, and can cause harm to health. When making a back cushion, do not fill it with different fillings if one type is not enough. Loading will create different pressures on the body, which can harm your posture.
