Balcony in Scandinavian style: design of a Scandi loggia

Increasingly, the balcony is no longer used as storage for various things or unnecessary rubbish. It is no longer used as a storage area for canning or other provisions. Sometimes its space is combined with a room, expanding the room or creating, for example, a separate office for work.

A loggia, made in a modern style, becomes the hallmark of an apartment where people who follow fashion trends live.

If the standard design is no longer satisfactory and you want some changes, then you can opt for one of the following directions for organizing the interior of the room on the balcony.

Design styles

A loft-style balcony implies the combination of several directions, expansion of space and the absence of partitions. A loggia made in this manner can be combined with an adjacent room in the Scandinavian style, and you will get a complete stylish composition.

The main elements of decorating a balcony in the “loft” direction:

  1. Brick masonry is used to decorate the walls - it can be either a natural material or its imitation. To tone down the roughness of unplastered installation, paint it white.
  2. You can hang posters, posters or magazine covers on the walls.
  3. For flooring, it is better to choose linoleum, tiles or laminate with a rough texture. An interesting option would be a wooden floor on the balcony, which will creak a little when you walk on it. In this case, leave the wood untreated, that is, you should not cover it with paint.
  4. It is better to abandon metal-plastic windows in favor of wooden frames in black or brown. If the design of the loggia allows, make floor-to-ceiling windows - this will visually expand the space and add light to the room, which is so necessary for a loft-style balcony.
  5. Do not hang curtains; instead, it is better to use blinds or fabric roller blinds.
  6. Do not place a lot of furniture, as this direction loves a large space. It is enough to place a shabby sofa, a folding table, a box in the form of a chest or a bench.
  7. As decorative elements, you can place metal figurines of unusual shape, an old radio, or a fragment of a water pipe used as a shelf for books.

"Provence"

This style is filled with light, thanks to the use of thin translucent curtains, floral patterns, and a variety of textiles: tablecloths, pillows, lace.

The more natural materials are used, the better. It can be:

  1. linen, cotton or chintz curtains;
  2. ceramic tiles on the floor;
  3. wooden figurines.

Decorative plaster of light colors, for example, white, beige or cream, is used as finishing. By using special decoration details that imitate crumbling brickwork, you can add some antiquity to the interior.

For decoration you will need a variety of pillows with a checkered pattern or horizontal stripes. In textiles, only light colors are acceptable: soft blue or the color of young foliage.

Antique furniture will help to emphasize the Provence style on the balcony; you can add age to it yourself, just arm yourself with a brush and paints.

"Country"

This style of interior decoration promotes a calm and relaxed state. On such a balcony it is easy to step away from the everyday hustle and bustle and plunge into the world of dreams.

To decorate a loggia in a country style, use wicker furniture and a fairly simple texture for decoration. An excellent option would be a rocking chair and a simple coffee table in a light shade.

The finishing of walls and floors should be made of wood. Flowers in wicker pots or clay vases, stones and decorative elements made of wood are suitable as decorations.

Metal-plastic windows will stand out from the overall picture, so you should give preference to either wooden profiles or window frames that imitate such material.

Oriental

The characteristic features of a loggia made in an oriental style are:

  1. walls covered with plain wallpaper;
  2. floor laid with tiles or mosaics;
  3. openwork details used to decorate furniture and lamps;
  4. the use of brightly colored textiles with patterns typical of the East - curtains and pillows decorated with organza.

An oriental-style interior will be an excellent solution for a small balcony. You can put a carpet on the floor, place a small table and place silk pillows around. This will be a great place for tea ceremonies or get-togethers with friends over a hookah.

Minimalism

The minimalist style involves the use of plain textiles and furniture. The wall covering should also be free of various patterns. This direction is emphasized by transparent glass or chrome-plated metal lamps.

A stylish loggia should not be crowded with furniture - you should give preference to a minimum number of items in the interior that are made of natural wood or metal. Flowers in simple pots or vases and pillows in rich shades will help add bright colors.

Chinese

Strive to decorate the loggia in a strict, restrained, but at the same time elegant design, then a room made in the Chinese style will be a great idea. Angularity and clarity of lines are characteristic features of this direction.

Lighting

High-quality lighting will allow you to spend cozy evenings on the balcony. The light source will be a small table lamp or floor lamp. The ideal solution for a Scandinavian-style loggia would be dim ceiling lighting.

It would be appropriate to decorate the railings on the balcony with a regular garland and complement the lighting design with candles or hanging lanterns.

The photo shows decorative lighting for a small open balcony in a Scandinavian style.

Balcony lighting in Scandinavian style

The interior of balconies and loggias becomes cozy due to various accessories and other little things. When performing renovations, you need to take care of high-quality lighting in the room. The chosen style requires compliance with the following features when organizing light:

  • You can place a small floor lamp near a small sofa;
  • a lamp with or without a lampshade is usually placed on the table;
  • if technical capabilities allow, then it is better to dim the overhead light;
  • The best lamps for such a room are those whose shape imitates gas lamps;
  • Often several ordinary lamps without lampshades, which have long and thick cords, are hung on the ceiling;
  • You can place several candles of different thicknesses and heights on the windowsill, table or shelves.

Materials and textures

When facing the main surfaces, natural materials with a characteristic texture should be used, for example:

  1. decorate the walls with decorative tiles imitating shell rock;
  2. the floor can be laid with stone, medium-sized rough (lappated) tiles, wooden boards, mosaics or even sea (river) pebbles;
  3. level the ceiling and paint it white, or use decorative plaster

In order for a marine-style balcony to look organic, materials must be chosen with small, artificially created defects (chips on tiles, chips and dents on wood), as if they had been washed by waves near the sea for a long time. It’s good if the colors of the materials are also as natural as possible: gray, wood, sand, light brown.

Place a sun lounger on the balcony, preferably wooden or wicker rattan, complement it with a compact table made of glass and forged metal (plastic is possible), strengthen a large striped umbrella.

Covers for soft seats, pillows and ottomans, rugs should be chosen only from light and durable materials that do not fade in the sun and are quickly cleaned. Polyester, especially durable cotton with special impregnation, or denim that can withstand many washes are suitable.

Patterns and colors

The most recognizable pattern, identified with the sea, is a strip of different widths, a wave and a zigzag. They definitely need to be used in the design of the balcony, but we also recommend using designs on the theme of algae, fish and other underwater inhabitants, anchors, seagulls and fish scales.

The dominant colors in a marine interior should be: blue, turquoise, azure, cornflower blue, bright and dark blue, ultramarine, cobalt, as well as the color of sand, dark green algae, white foam and transparent blue-green waves. The use of coral, salmon, yellow and red is allowed, but only in small quantities in the decor.

So, the palette is quite limited, but at the same time it allows you to create amazing images of interiors of indoor and outdoor spaces, remaining timeless.

A little about Scandinavian style

Conciseness, simplicity combined with functionality are the defining words for Scandi. The birthplace of the Scandinavian design trend is Northern Europe. The lack of natural sunlight is compensated by light shades in interior design.

Translucent textiles on the windows, simple but comfortable furniture. You can dilute the white color with bright accessories (souvenirs, vases, figurines), posters or paintings.

And most importantly, true Scandinavian style involves the use of only natural materials.

Decor in a nautical style

To decorate your balcony, you can use all those things that in your mind are associated with a holiday by the sea, for example: all kinds of shells, frozen corals, aromatic herbs picked on the slopes of the coastal mountains (lavender, thyme, chamomile, rosemary), using ropes you can decorate a doorway or border border of a balcony, connect lamps under the ceiling, or knit an openwork rug.

You can include inclusions of rapan shells and pearl mussels in the wall cladding, or paint (paste) the surface on a given theme. In addition, decor in the form of oars, anchors, decorative sails and nets attached to the ceiling and walls is popular.

Design ideas

Norwegian style provides the opportunity to use a wide variety of light shades, such as pearl, cream, milk, linen or snow. By harmoniously combining colors, you can achieve a design in warm or cold tones.

The photo shows a Scandinavian-style balcony with bright accents in the form of decorative pillows.

In order to diversify the decor, use accents in natural blue, green, terracotta or yellow tones. Pillows, vases, paintings or small pieces of furniture in similar colors will look especially good against a snow-white background.

Sea terrace: natural materials and textures

A good half of humanity dreams of going out onto the terrace, which is not surprising, because its space is filled with the romance of distant countries, warmth and sophistication.

When creating terraces, durable materials and supports are used, since additional space is built, often at the level of the second floor of the house. And for cladding they use light types of natural and artificial stone, wood, marble, because the very existence of terraces is synonymous with the quality and status of the building.

When a marine style is chosen for a terrace space, they know how important the selection of materials for decorative cladding of surfaces is, and their color and texture play an important role in creating the right image. Therefore, light matte rocks, rough and pleasant to the touch, are most characteristic in this case: sand-colored tiles, white plastered walls, decorated with light wood beams, etc.

Terraces are most often built without a roof, building only a light canopy-type structure on wooden supports or columns. Decorators use this with success when they decide to use flying curtains along the entire perimeter of the “canopy.”

Wooden and wicker furniture

A terrace in a marine style is a focal point of relaxation and a relaxed atmosphere, filled with comfortable and light furniture, durable and durable. These are precisely rattan items, which have long proven themselves to be the best outdoor furniture, as well as massive light-colored wooden items.

It does not matter significantly in which space the marine style will be applied, but it is important to remember that this direction does not tolerate excesses. The entire decor should be concise and understandable, the color scheme is represented by snow-white, sand, cream, gray and all shades of blue and dark blue. Furniture is used from natural materials (mainly wood), simple shapes with a minimum of decor or no decor at all.

So, the terrace will remind you of the sea if wide wooden sofas with soft seats, armchairs and loungers, and low poufs are placed on its area. A colorful and especially attractive object will be a hammock or a hanging chair in the center of the terrace.

For textile decoration of the terrace, you should use soft striped pillows, wicker rugs, practical covers with a themed wavy pattern, and a note of irony will be added by silhouettes of seahorses, turtles, crabs and screaming seagulls.

Textiles in the interior

Do not cover windows with heavy curtains. Light curtains made of translucent fabric or roller blinds are what you need.

Important: curtains should be of a simple cut, without flounces or frills, made of plain fabric: muslin, thin linen, muslin. Artificial material also looks good. The main thing is that the texture and weave resemble natural fabric. If you want to visually “raise” the ceiling, use long curtains.

Curtain rods are attached not to the ceiling, but to the walls. Simple tubular structures in black - an additional color accent in interior design

To add coziness, use small rugs in bright colors. One or several with different textures. For example, woven with a pattern and plain with long pile, reminiscent of animal skins.

If wool carpets are suitable for decorating a room, then for a loggia it is better to choose textiles made of artificial fiber. It is much easier to care for.

Blankets and pillows are also necessary little things to create a comfortable and homely environment. Smooth fabrics and laconic, simple patterns - stripes, diamonds, ethnics.

If you are into knitting, great. Knitted pillowcases with large buttons and a cozy blanket with a voluminous pattern are what you need.

Textiles and details

A large or small Scandinavian-style balcony is not complete without cute details and quality fabrics. The latter can be used in curtains, capes, checkered blankets, pillows, and carpets. Suitable materials:

  • Cotton;
  • Natural fur and skins (especially for carpet);
  • Linen;
  • Wool;
  • Satin.

Details as color accents

The ideal color scheme is considered to be ethnic patterns and motifs and, of course, light shades of white, beige and gray. Often, pillows or throws become small pops of color, as do plants in shades of red, green, blue and purple.

The use of ornaments in furniture

Scandinavian motifs in textiles

First of all, it is important to remember the quality of textile products. The following materials are best suited:

  • natural fur and skins;
  • cotton;
  • linen;
  • satin;
  • wool.

Curtains, floor rugs, skins and furs draped over the seats of folding chairs or on a sofa are all integral elements of a Scandinavian interior. It is important to consider the color. An excellent solution are ethnic motifs and ornaments. Checkered blankets and soft pillows can not only provide warmth, but also become bright color accents in the interior.

It is extremely important to take into account that the Scandinavian style is built on color contrasts. Therefore, the key role of color nuances falls on textiles. Against the background of cold walls, textiles should have warm or hot shades. This is how you can achieve the necessary Scandinavian atmosphere.

Marine surroundings

The right mood will be provided by characteristic objects and decorative accents that accompany the idea of a maritime style. The first thing you should arm yourself with is the colors of the seaside landscape, which combine surprisingly with a neutral light background. So, blue, blue-green and sand are suitable for textiles of pillows, covers, decorative curtains; white, blue, cream and a little red, combined at the same time, will serve to create a classic nautical look for a ship's deck.

It is impossible to do without the use of living plants in massive tubs when it comes to terrace space. At the same time, you should not make a dense jungle out of it; it is enough to limit yourself to palm trees, decorative boxwood and hibiscus to mark the boundaries and create an intimate, cozy atmosphere.

Artificial lighting is important for the terrace, because the evenings in summer are quite long, and you won’t want to leave the fresh air, even when it gets completely dark. To maintain a marine look, it is recommended to install several pendant lamps - lanterns; they emit a stunning yellowish light.

I choose the Scandinavian style, but what kind of balcony interior would you choose?

Open balcony - a gift or a problem?

Nowadays, an unglazed balcony is a rarity, and if I were the owner, I would enjoy it. After all, this is the sky, greenery and air without the annoying plastic.

  • One of the disadvantages of an open balcony is curious neighbors and passers-by. To hide from them, a screen or frosted glass screen is enough. The balcony remains open to air and light and becomes inaccessible to prying eyes. A wooden partition or lattice covered with plants can serve as a screen.

Balcony bistro

  • A microscopic balcony is a great reason to arrange it in the style of a French bistro. The main attribute of the bistro is elegant folding chairs and a round table. A box of flowers on the railing or a garden in a mini-greenhouse will add color to your “bistro”.
  • Folding tables, sofa boxes, stools instead of tables, vertical gardening - you can’t do without this on a small balcony.
  • If you are “lucky” and you get an almost real French balcony 20 cm wide, then potted plants and lanterns will still fit on it, which means you will have a beautiful corner with a view of the city. If you wish, you can also drink coffee on this balcony... while sitting on the threshold. Why not?

Balcony style

Is there a yacht club on your balcony, a country veranda, an Italian terrace? Easily! I’ll tell you how to create a certain style on your balcony or loggia using textiles, accessories and plants.

sea coast

  • When creating the ambiance of a seaside resort or yacht club on your balcony, use light shades: white, sand, coffee with milk. Make accents with turquoise, blue-green and coral colors.
  • Boards and textured plaster on the walls are an excellent backdrop for souvenirs brought from vacation.
  • The most ordinary household items can act as marine decor. For example, a wooden chest as a sofa, table and storage space. A sports rope, an oar or fishing rod, an old kerosene stove that looks like a signal lantern.

Boho chic - a celebration of color

  • Boho chic involves creativity and relaxation, no strict rules or restrictions.

  • The boho style allows you to place different things together: carpets, bright curtains made of scarves, incredible vases, ethnic jewelry, mirrors, lanterns, candlesticks, etc.

  • The more gypsy, the better. The main role in the style is, of course, played by textiles: carpets, bedspreads, pillows, curtains.

Tropical garden or Mediterranean

  • It’s not easy to create a Mediterranean setting in our latitudes; only a south-facing balcony or loggia will do. The lush flowering of ampelous annual plants can create the illusion of the south.
  • In the Mediterranean style of decorating a balcony, finishing is not so important, since the plants are solitary. Your indoor plants will fit perfectly into this style.
  • This style does not tolerate pretentiousness; you do not need bulky furniture and decor. Terracotta pots, garden chairs, beautiful textiles and lots of greenery - this is a recipe for southern luxury.

Loft – industrial romance

Russian balconies, and especially glazed loggias, are suitable for loft-style design, since most of our balconies have rough concrete or brick walls.

  • The loft balcony does not need perfect renovation - severe negligence is only welcome. The brick can be painted white or left unchanged. If you still want to refresh the walls, then pay attention to textured plaster.
  • The loft is characterized by simplicity in design: posters, posters or magazine covers on the walls. Roughly painted wooden boxes as furniture, metal decor, monochrome color palette.

  • Too much greenery on a loft-style balcony will look out of place. Use non-trivial containers for plants.

Country life

  • If you don’t have a dacha, organize a dacha veranda on the balcony. For decoration, use wooden boards painted white or a delicate natural shade.

  • Furniture is preferably wicker or forged in light colors, preferably with patina.

  • Decor in a rustic style includes watering cans, jugs, baskets for greenery, wooden painted house-houses or birdhouses. Decorate your country balcony with pillows, tablecloths, and napkins with floral patterns.

Scandi balcony

  • A Scandi-style balcony is perhaps the most neutral and low-cost option for decorating a balcony. In addition, laconic decoration and Scandinavian-style furniture are the basis of almost any style. Change the textiles and a couple of trinkets and you get a new balcony.
  • A Scandinavian balcony is characterized by light walls, a wooden floor or garden decking, and strong but light garden furniture made of wood.

  • Scandinavians decorate their balconies with lanterns, zinc pots with plants and solar-powered garden garlands.

The balcony, in addition to additional space and a relaxation area, performs another function: it expands the space and creates a perspective in the room. What is on the balcony is an extension of the room. You understand this especially well in the summer, when the door to the balcony is always open. A room with a balcony seems brighter and larger if the balcony is beautifully decorated.

Decor and plants

The loggia is decorated with a variety of soft pillows, capes and blankets to keep you warm on cool evenings. To maintain the northern style, the furnishings are decorated with a small rug, natural or artificial leather.

The photo shows a Scandinavian-style loggia, decorated with light rugs and a carpet with a geometric pattern.

Plants will help bring positive energy and comfort to your design. Flowers in pots with simple geometric or floral patterns will harmoniously fit into the interior of the loggia.

On the balcony you can place or hang on the wall identical wooden boxes of different sizes and plant coniferous greenery in them. The room is also decorated with different types of cacti, floral panels and unusual phyto-shelves.
