In an effort to give our home individuality, we are increasingly choosing non-standard architectural projects that include skylights of an unusual configuration, for example, in the shape of a triangle. The problem is that most finished products for window decoration are created taking into account the classic rectangular option; cornices and curtains for triangular windows are usually made to order. We will discuss below what solutions are applicable in this case.

What you need to know when decorating triangular windows with curtains
Before decorating a window, evaluate the style of the room. Some solutions may require custom curtain rods and additional fixings, but the entire concept needs to be carefully thought out before installing these parts.
Most often, triangular windows decorate attics. As a rule, these are attics of houses with peaked roofs. Triangular-shaped windows allow you to fill such rooms with light as much as possible and create a feeling of integrity of the exterior of the house.
In classic interiors, traditional fabric curtains are the most appropriate option. And when there are windows in a wooden house, textile fabrics are definitely a priority. They are fixed to the triangular opening in two ways:
- masking the non-standard shape;
- focusing attention on it.
You can disguise triangular glazing using any model by hanging it in the traditional way on a cornice fixed above the top point of the opening. But in this case, its non-standard shape is not played up, and the interior is deprived of its main architectural “zest”. Sometimes, for example, when the window follows the internal contour of the roof and is located directly under it, this method is not feasible.
Rafblinds

I have already written a whole article about these wonderful products for roof windows and more called external blinds, so there is no point in describing all this here again, if you are interested in them, click on the button for more details. But now I will briefly describe their work.
Rafshtora are external blinds that can be installed both outside and indoors. The slats can be retracted completely into the box, or rotated around their axis, adjusting the clearance.
Classic curtains and tulle on a sloping window
Sliding straight curtains on a standard cornice mounted parallel to the floor above the opening conveniently mask the sloping shape of the window. This option involves the use of a lambrequin, the length of which depends on the slope of the sides of the triangle - the sharper the angle of the apex, the longer the lambrequin. Otherwise, when the canvases are pulled apart, the wall near the top of the opening will be visible.
When choosing a style of curtains yourself, it is worth remembering that, first of all, functionality is important, and secondarily, decorativeness.
Straight curtains for triangular windows are also fixed on inclined sides, emphasizing the non-standard nature of the opening. In this case, the panel must be cut in the shape of a beveled trapezoid with a right lower angle. The beveled edge is attached to the cornice and must coincide with it in angle of inclination. Its length depends on the abundance of expected folds. You won’t be able to pull these curtains apart, just tie them up, not fully opening the gap. If the location and purpose of the room allows you to neglect protection from prying eyes, choosing a transparent material for curtains will solve the problem. Any fabric can be used based on the interior concept, including tulle and muslin (thread curtains).
Roller shutters
Roller shutters for attic windows
Roller shutters are designed in the same way as awnings, only instead of fabric they have a sheet of metal slats and profiles. Roller shutters are not only a sun protection element for the attic window, but also perform an additional function of protecting the window opening from burglary.
The roller shutter canvas is evenly wound onto the shaft and hidden in the box, watch the video below to see how this happens.

Italian curtains
Italian curtains for triangular windows are a good option for classic and retro interiors, Provence and country styles. The soft, rounded lines of the upper draperies of Italian curtains neutralize sharp corners. Such canvases do not cover the glazing, providing maximum access to light during the day, and in the evening, they can be lowered by untying the cords.
The top edge of Italian curtains is static. They do not create problems when hanging at an angle, since they are fixed motionless. The fabric is directed in the direction opposite to where the cornice is located (a fastener is mounted for the cord connecting the curtain), which allows you to create a round fold - a distinctive feature of Italian models.
For a small window it is better to use one panel. Large - looks better with two curtains. They are crossed, layering one on top of the other. Curtains can be of different colors and textures, for example, one is thick, the other is transparent. Medium-sized glazing allows both design options.
Another option is to use a straight cornice that extends over the top of the triangle. Italian canvases, tied with a cord at the height of the lower corners of the opening or slightly higher, will give it the usual, rectangular shape.
What are the benefits of Roman blinds on triangular windows?
Roman blinds on plastic and wooden windows provide excellent protection from street views, look impressive, and are convenient for regulating the comfortable access of light. Having chosen the Roman option, you need to make sure that the canvas will not interfere with opening the doors for ventilation.
Roman blinds on wide glazing can look bulky; two triangular panels look neater. Panoramic glazing can be decorated with several narrow panels, each of which stops folding at a certain height (the closer to the center, the higher). This approach emphasizes the non-standard contour, makes it softer, frames it, adapting it to the interior.
Solid canvases that completely cover the opening look best on “house”-shaped openings, where only the upper part is triangular.
Does it make sense to install roller blinds on triangular windows?
Roller blinds, or as they are also called “roller blinds,” appeared about ten years ago. Since then, their sales have only increased. This is not surprising: they are practical, laconic, beautiful, can serve as tulle for curtains, but are more often used independently.
They will not open all the way on a non-standard opening. If its shape is completely triangular, the roll model can only be secured permanently. It is more convenient to “break” an opening in the shape of a house into parts. Cover the triangular section with a fabric roller shutter that matches its contour, and decorate the rectangular section with a standard roller shutter. Another option is to hang roller blinds on the rectangular part of the frame, and not decorate the top.
Recently, roller models have appeared that work (opening and closing) on windows of complex configurations. But not all specialized workshops produce them.
Types and features of designs
Before hanging roller blinds on the window frame, you need to familiarize yourself with:
- with existing structures;
- with the principle of their operation;
- with the features of fastening systems.
There are several types of sun protection in the form of curtains for plastic windows. Only after knowing the features of each design will it be possible to decide on the choice of one of the following options:
- Mini (Mini) is an open roll-type system with a drum on which the web is wound;
- “UNI” and “UNI2” are closed systems with the canvas located in a cassette.
Roller blinds for windows “Mini” are a budget option; they are mounted without perforating the frame. The simple design consists of a movable holder shaft on which a special blade is fixed. Thanks to reliable fixation on one side, the material can be straightened, folded and stored in the assembled position.
The only drawback of such a lightweight design is that the curtains sag under their own weight when the sash is open and sway from the incoming air, but this is a completely solvable problem. Using magnets, you can fix the tensioned roller blind at the bottom of the frame.
Mini-rolls without drilling are very popular due to their availability, compactness, unpretentiousness and easy installation on any window.
A closed sun protection system for windows without drilling requires the presence of a compact box. This design creates reliable protection for the canvas from the negative influence of the external environment - it does not fade, does not gather dust, and does not lose its original appearance:
- Cassette curtains "UNI" (Uni) consist of a laminated box, which is presented in a wide variety of colors and in imitation of natural wood. This allows you to select sun protection to match any color of the glass unit. There are limiters installed on both sides of the system that act as guides and prevent distortions of the canvas during opening and closing. A roller blind rolled into a cassette does not interfere with the opening of the window. The blade is driven by a chain.
- Model “UNI2” (Uni2) is a double design with a spring mechanism. Roller blinds are mounted on plastic windows without drilling. The system is attached to the top and bottom of the glass unit, which allows you to open the top panel from bottom to top or the bottom panel to open up and down. Curtains for the UNI2 system can be plain, consist of patterns and designs, and also have different degrees of light transmission, thereby ensuring the desired level of illumination in the room.
Zebra cassette roller blinds, consisting of alternating stripes - blackout curtains (made of especially dense fabric) and dimout curtains (made of translucent fabric) have increased functionality. Both types of canvases are displaced, as a result of which the intensity of the light flux changes and the window can be made “deaf”. It is enough to fasten the curtain, and the sun protection system is ready for use. The canvases are shifted to the side without being completely lifted, and thanks to their tight fit to the window, reliable protection from fading is provided to drapes, curtains, wallpaper and furniture upholstery.
By using roller blinds without drilling, there is no need to use self-tapping screws that violate the integrity of the frame, and when removing the sun protection, the resulting holes will have to be sealed.
Nuances of designing triangular window blinds
In interiors of minimalism, hi-tech, loft, techno, it is more appropriate not to smooth out non-standard architectural geometry, but to emphasize it. Slat and pleated blinds are ideal for this.
Slat blinds for non-standard windows
Vertical blinds with triangular openings look more harmonious than horizontal ones. It is advisable to install horizontal blinds on small frames and separate sections. On large openings it is more convenient to use vertical blinds.
Pleated blinds for triangular windows
Pleated blinds are a corrugated panel that folds together like an accordion when you need to open the shutters.
The accordion-style bellows design makes it possible to produce pleated openings to fit gaps of any configuration, emphasizing their unusual shape. The width of the folds varies from 1 to 5 centimeters. For standard-sized glass, and especially small ones, it is not recommended to choose blinds with large folds. In wide light, a large fold looks more harmonious than a small one.
Folds can be horizontal and vertical. The first ones should be chosen for openings in the shape of an elongated (rectangular) triangle. The “squat” silhouette has vertical folds stretched upward. It is more convenient to cover a small gap or section with blinds with radial folds: in the open position, they will be assembled like a fan in one corner and straightened at the opposite edge.
